the lie that there's actually a fort there?
Because now I'm suspecting that the whole place is just an airfield and a shack where they keep all the MRE's

I almost don't want to ruin it for you, but at the same time, I would feel bad if you found out the hard way.
'The Lie' is that Ft. Carson is the greatest place in the army; a shiny paradise compared to all other bases where life is grand and wonderful for all soldiers stationed there.
In reality, it's a base with too-little housing for the number of soldiers they cram into it; barely kept ranges covered in camel spiders, rattle snakes and brown recluses; and is generally irritating to get around on because they change the road names like every 3 fucking months!
Not to say it's the worst place ever, far from it, but it's not the almighty shining light of army bases that people seem to think it is.
So you can go there, but you might hate life by the time you leave.

On the plus side, if I can learn how to skin and preserve animals, I'll make a killing off those rattlesnakes.

I guess the main difference between it and Carson is that everybody already knows Sill sucks.

Re: Gun/Military Thread
Although, I've been to Camp Edwards. The most depressing place I've seen so far. It's just... It's fucking Hoofington. Always cloudy, everything looks 200 years old, and it sucks the life out of you. And scrubbing month-old pubic hairs off the shower floor because the companies who had the barracks before you didn't clean it at all; now THAT is fun. And reminds me; Frost, keep the latrines and facilities spotless. Walking out with hairier feet than what you walked in with isn't fun. Neither is the DS interrupting your shower. Or finding the weird kid who doesn't make any noise when he laughs furiously spanking it on the shower floor. And that "pull-up" bar isn't a pull-up bar, it's a hot water pipe. Shower drains do not work the same way toilet drains do; a turd will clog. Wind sprints are not for use on a PT test. You write down the sex you were born, not the sex you want to be. And above all else, do NOT drop your weapon. Especially like the weird kid who doesn't make any noise when he laughs, who dropped his from the top of a set of bleachers, whereupon it hit every support bar on the way down, clanging like a welding shop and spinning like a goddamn baton.

He was tolerable, comparably. Better than the one who arrived at formation in flip flops, or the one we had to stop before he ran out to an emergency formation without pants.

My cousin told me about a guy in his unit who managed to have his congressman dad pull strings to get him in, despite being over 300 pounds. No one in the unit could fireman carry him up the hill.

Aaaaand now I'm picturing an 80's-style TV show.
"Lurch, Mongo and Frog-Man are loose-cannon commandos who don't play by the rules."
"But now, with their hometown being threatened by the black communist homosexual menace,"
"These three unlikely heroes must go back to the place where it all began."
"Will they keep America safe? Will they get the girl? Will they find out what the deal is with airline food? Tune in Thursdays at 9 to find out."

That's really not an exaggeration. We picked up 200 rounds of .223 to go shooting when some family was in town; ended up spending over $300RoboRed wrote:

Re: Gun/Military Thread
Yeah, that shit was bad here. Gun shows had lines for ammo so big they started using those 'Take a Number' machines and had a $200 limit per person.
That and AR-15's cost 3K for some ungodly reason.
@Harmony:
Not really anymore, but when everyone was convinced they were going to ban EVERYTHING (because reasons I don't know), ammo was stupidly expensive.

.223, 7.62, 9mm, and .40 got hit the hardest around here. .45 was pricy, but less so, and 12-gauge barely rose at all

Where we learn the ones who have the most to gain from gun control debates are *drumroll* the gun manufacturers and re-sellers. Whotchathinkadit ?

Re: Gun/Military Thread
It was all the merchants here. Manufacturers didn't raise prices at all, because they knew that they wouldn't get shut down. Even merchants knew it, but some of them realized that suddenly demand was way up, so they could take advantage of the 'every gun will be banned' scare and bump their prices to retarded levels. A few kept their prices low, because they aren't assholes, but most just took advantage of the situation.Harmony Ltd. wrote:lolCamoBadger wrote:@Harmony:

Re: Gun/Military Thread
It would be interesting to make a study where you ask Americans how many guns they own, how much they have spent on guns in the last five years, and ask what their political leaning is (Left, center, Right ; Liberal, Conservative, etc.).
Just to know if there's a basis to my suspicion that the people who tend to spend the most on guns also tend to clearly lean on the Right of the political spectrum.

There's a degree of leaning, but--like most things in life, I find--most are just normal, neutral folks. A great deal of the newer generation of gun owners tend toward the Libertarian side of the spectrum, myself includedHarmony Ltd. wrote:It would be interesting to make a study where you ask Americans how many guns they own, how much they have spent on guns in the last five years, and ask what their political leaning is (Left, center, Right ; Liberal, Conservative, etc.).

Re: Gun/Military Thread
I'm more independent myself, but the issue itself determines which way I lean. Today I learned my state, Massachusetts, established in the past few weeks that you need your FID/Class A license PIN number to buy a firearm; not just your FID/Class license. It takes roughly three minutes to call a number and get it, and that is all it does. You give them a number to validate an ID that has your picture and description on it. As for spending most on guns, the most I've spent was $270 for my Henry (it's beautiful!). Ammo can be a pain, at least surplus stuff is relatively cheap.
I also came home today with 100 rounds of 7.62x54R and 30 rounds of 8mm Mauser. The store usually has a two-box cap, but the guy said he had a whole crate of 7.62 in the basement and there was no limit. I know where I'm going again!

I'll be fairly inactive until September, leaving for training soon.
Oh, and I had fun at the range. 50+ rounds of 7.62x54R and water jugs at 100m type of fun.

You stole a mannequin from a department store, put your ACU's on it, and prop it up wherever you're expected to be. I think that's pretty obvious.StoneSlinger88 wrote:Did you think I had this much free time as active?
