Re: Gun/Military Thread
My buddy actually got an HK USP a few months back. We went out and shot it, and I did like it, but personally not my favorite. It's a damn fine gun and I loved shooting it, but it wasn't something I would buy for myself; I can definitely see why people like it though (even if they hate the price tag).Mister Frost wrote:FN is some damn good shit. Their pistols, to my great pleasure, avoid the habit that their long guns have of being slapped into a boxy polymer shell just to look "futuristic".
To be honest, I prefer H&K a lot of the time, though

And yes, the metal feels nice, so I'm very glad they don't have plastic space-pistols. Wouldn't have gotten it if it was.

Re: Gun/Military Thread
To date, the only .45 I've shot was a Citadel 1911, which I promptly shat myself over because of how fucking much I loved it. I'd be interested in shooting a different .45 just to see if it's the 1911 specifically, or just .45's in general that I like, because I was bullseye accurate with that shit, which is odd, considering I'm quite good with any 9mm but only sorta decent with .40, so you'd think I would be even worse with .45

Re: Gun/Military Thread
I'd put that on the 1911 because it's a mothafuckin' 1911. I love those things, and was within a hair on my ass of buying one today.
However, I'm more partial to .40, and this one also serves as home defense. I love 1911s and will be buying one in the future because they're sex in pistol form to shoot, but not my first choice for personal protection.
So yeah, 1911 is great gun that every shooter is required to shoot at some point in their life because IT'S AMAZING.

I think I've mentioned this before, but my buddy not too long ago inherited a 1911 and a Walther P38 from his grandpa, the 1911 being his great-grandpa's service pistol that was manufactured in 1913. The two of us broke it down to the basic components and scoured it clean of any trace of dirt, so now it works like it's fresh from the factory, and in its condition is probably worth $7,000-ish. I'm currently holding onto it, as said buddy is currently in Basic (where I'll be in not too long, still trying to get my ship date)

Frost let me hold and fiddle with that pistol. With the way I felt, I may as well have been a priest holding a relic from the fucking crusades.
I've been thinking about getting a .400 Corbon pistol (I know it has to be converted) for both home and predator defense since it's midway between the .40 S&W and the 10mm Auto. Also thought about getting a .460 Rowland at some point (It's effectively a .44 magnum for semi-autos, in case someone doesn't know) for handgun hunting. However, with the way prices are starting to climb, I might just stick with a 9mm. Cheap to use, and enough to tell an assailant to fuck the hell off, albeit not as effectively as some.

Despite the ridiculousness, I still find myself trying to find a way to make a .50 AE worth it. There's revolvers that will take them...but...yeah I don't know. Just a thought I like to entertain.

Reminds me of a friend whose grandfather has a war trophy Luger that is apparently really fun to shoot.
I'll never understand the idea that bigger is better in regards to handguns. Sure, if you ever find yourself in close quarters with a bear you might want to be able to stop it with one shot, but there is very little practical application beyond that.Ironmonger wrote:Despite the ridiculousness, I still find myself trying to find a way to make a .50 AE worth it. I just think it's ridiculous, but I'm more a fan of practical weaponry, which is also why I don't like excessively ornate guns.

I might have been thinking of the .500 Special without realizing it. I get stuff like that mixed up sometimes. Still, that belongs in a carbine, not a revolver. The damn S&W X-Frame .500 Magnum is a little too heavy for a pistol, even if the recoil is manageable.

Arsenal sharing time? Arsenal sharing time!
I don't know if we've ever done this before, but let's all share pictureses what we've got (if we have done this then please excuse my horrible memory).
Anyways, here's my 4 in chronological order of when I got them (with my horrible camera and using my lovely bed as a backdrop)

There used to be a conversion out there to make the Garand fire .458 Winchester, but the smith who did it died some time back.

It wasn't like I could just pass up the case. It wouldn't feel right if I did.

I think I may have finally figured out the usefulness of drum magazines. While you're mobile it would be an utter pain in the ass to manage something that bulky, but perhaps not so much if you're efending a static location. Get a bunch of ammo boxes, a few drum mags for when you absolutely need to keep sustained fire, bam, good. Seems pretty good as long as you have the ammo to keep them fed and a place to set them so that they aren't in the way.

Of course, if you're defending a static location so fiercely you need that kind of firepower, you're also probably in the sort of profession that means you have belt-fed machine guns on hand

I mean...
Yeah, of course dude, I'm awakening in panic, with my gun kept unloaded in a safe in another room than my bedroom, and I'll have the time to put the correct load of ammunition into the gun, have the big cartridge in 1st position, put myself in defensive position AND I'll have the cold blood to kill someone just to keep my stereo safe.
The alternative being to sleep with a loaded gun under my pillow or my mattress.
Ever heard of "gun safety" ?

Re: Gun/Military Thread
I did not know what to think on that article at first. As much as I love the big guns, I'd just go for a Mossberg 590 in that situation. Hard to miss and you won't fucking obliterate someone's chest cavity. Plus, non-lethal ammo. Anyway, I'd try my best to disable rather than kill them. The guy did break in, I'm going to give him pain for that, but outright kill him? I feel odd about that. There's always the chance that I might have to, but still.
Unrelated:
I'm considering getting a .454 Casull lever carbine at some point. That's way too much bullet for a handgun. It's also my intention to make a list of bullshit cartridges.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flash-ball || http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milkor_Stopper_37/38_mm_riot_gun => put someone KO long enough that even a non-trained individual can put handcuff on them. Note that the flash-ball was originally designed to handle home-invasion scenarios and was when expanded in its scope by the manufacturer to be sold to the Police forces as a crowd-control weapon.
