Re: Gun/Military Thread
How is it I check the forum multiple times every day, and yet I still miss some rather interesting conversations on this thread?
Anyways Stoneslinger, I'd be careful with that scope. Any scope priced below $50 is going to run a risk of breaking with the slightest wrong tweak.
But I have to admit, that's nice little plinker rifle you have there.
Which reminds me of a project I've been thinking about. I got ahold of two $2 Lakota Nation Copper Coins(Which are real legal tender within the LN and are made of 99.9% fine copper and weigh 1 AV Ounce... it's a big coin) and was thinking of Inlaying them into the stock of a lever-action rifle. I have a few problems though.
1.) How to keep the pure copper from oxidizing after they're inlayed.
2.) What kind of Lever-action to buy?
3.) How the ^&*$ to afford it on my measly salary. Seriously, I can't even afford factory new models, I don't have enough confidence with my skills to touch an original, and even used junkers That I know I could restore are out of my price range.

I'm not a huge lever-gun guy. I'm all about the semi-autos (or pump if it's a shotgun) but not so much levers.

Re: Gun/Military Thread
The scope's got a year warranty on it, so I'm not too worried. That and it's for plinking/varmints, not competition. I love the lever and bolt actions; my dad had me grow up on westerns. So I'll also be grabbing a black-powder revolver when I turn 21 (seriously MA fuck your laws).
The lever-action I have is a Henry .22.
1) Don't know about the oxidation. You could put a clear cover or something over it, not sure it would be airtight though.
2) Henry. Prices aren't cheap, but they're very well-made and give you a good set of options, plus just about any caliber you want. Plus the "Made in America or not made at all" slogan.
3) Put some money aside every week or month or so. Scrounge up change laying around. Might take a little while, but you'll get there.

That's probably the most practical modification of a Nagant I have ever seen. Too bad it's completely illegal to cut down a long rifle to that size without special permissions.

Might be picking up a Mosin Nagant tomorrow, depending on price. Local shop got a shipment of them, gonna see if I can get them to drop the price for one still soaked in cosmoline (they usually clean it off).

Good luck. The bayonet on mine, when I got it, didn't quite fit, so I had to do some filing

You should've seen my war on the Mauser upper-band pin. Needed a file, a hammer, and a punch to get that fucking thing out.

Soon, though, I'm going to get a scope for my Mosin (already have the rail that replaces the rear sight). Poor man's sniper rifle

Well, that was an interesting video. I've actually worked on a couple of guns like that. Another benefit to the modular FCU is that you can just pull it out of the frame, run it through a part washer, oil it, and put it back in. Hell of alot easier to clean than the polymer guns you have to disassemble to clean the metal parts. On that note, never put polymer frames through part washers, that stuff will actually dissolve and/or soften the polymer.

I know I'm probably going to slap myself for not figuring it out, but what the flop is CLP?

It's a type of gun oil. I prefer Hoppe's No. 9.

I use CLP for my Henry and #9 (with some offbrand ammonia Windex) for when I shoot surplus out of my Mauser.
And now, ladies and gentlemen, I give you the newest member of my family. A 1943 Mosin Nagant 91/30.
And now,

Just got back from the range. The Mosin put three rounds in the same hole at 25 meters. I now need to find a hammer to adjust the sights to zero it.

As it turns out, the 1960 Yugo ammo I bought for my Mauser is 1976 Romanian. Not only that, but there's only a tiny bit of lead in it. It's copper-jacketed steel core, with a tiny speck of lead in the nose.
I bought rounds that have enough penetration to go through anything short of a tank.

See, that's why the nearest indoor rifle range (despite being rated to hold anything up to a 30-06) won't let me shoot my Mosin--It's damn near impossible to find soft-core rounds that won't punch right through the damn walls anyway.

What is this madness you speak of? Every indoor range I've ever found is pistol only. And even then, who wants to shoot inside? Outdoor shooting is so much better, and so much less stressful on my tinnitus.

It's actually classy as hell. They've got a lounge 'n classes and stuff. A lounge!
And here in Ohio it's prone to spontaneous torrential downpours on days forecasted to be absolutely clear, so having options is nice. Not to mention it's only about ten miles away from my house, while the closest outdoor range is about 30.

Dude, I live in Colorado. It snows in July here if it wants to. I understand the weather stuff and outdoor shooting, especially since ranges close here for bad weather. Solution: We put on these things called coats or ponchos and go out into the mountains to shoot. Best part: No range fee or waiting for a lane to open up. Also, more fun targets like water jugs, fruit, and borderline illegal incendiary paint.

Thing is, I'd have to go probably close to 200 miles to find somewhere where I can shoot a rifle and not risk hitting some asshole behind some trees. Ranges are the only place I have to shoot, and they're still few and far between.

Then you live in the wrong state.
Not that it matters, soon you'll be on a range so much you'd rather learn to sew.
And then you'll get out of training and probably never see a range for a few years

Eh, depending on the SOP of wherever I get stationed, I might be able to get rangetime on my own. I've heard varying reports from the recruiting sergeants.

My friend who just graduated from Basic (the same guy who owned that 1911 I showed y'all) got his duty station moved from a base in fucking Hawaii to Ft. Polk.
While in town for the week between graduation and heading to Polk, he got a call that his unit had deployed to Afghanistan. He looked straight at me and said "Oh, thank God."
Also, 'the lie'?

That's what everyone says if they get deployed away from Ft. Polk. Because that place is worse than anywhere else on this planet.
And 'the lie' is Ft. Carson. Just wait, you'll hear it.
