O. Hinds wrote:Ah, I'm glad that that's your reaction. :)ILM126 wrote:Looks like the science of Space Travel in the Equus system just got a whole lot more interesting. It's not going up this weekend, sorry. It looks like it will be a long one. We're hoping for next weekend. Did you want to wait until it came out to do more work? I can't confirm or deny that there's anything relevant, of course, but, as Tom hasn't hit yet in the posted chapters, there is indeed a possibility that there might be.ILM126 wrote:I just remembered that the latest chapter would be released already. But turns out that it's being edited now or something, because the title is already up on the page :\Right, as I said, you'd not have them constantly overhead, but the period is probably only about ninety minutes. Too long for some applications, sure, but quite sufficient for others.SilentCarto wrote:I don't know.... making sure you had a satellite reasonably close to zenith for the entire planet at all times would require something more on the scale of a GPS network -- at least 24, assuming you orchestrated them to never double-cover the same area and considered anywhere within 45 degrees of zenith to be "overhead". (Also, spherical geometry sucks.) In practice it would probably take something more like 60 sats as a back-of-the-envelope estimate, but that's spending an awful lot of effort to cover barren ice caps and oceans.
Anyway, I think that I may have misinterpreted what I was replying to. Were you thinking of having them all share an equatorial orbit or something?Well, not exactly. You still have to get the satellites into the orbits you want, and for some applications, the shifting ground coverage is advantageous.SilentCarto wrote:On the other hoof, as you point out, orbital inclination becomes largely a non-issue with a non-rotating planet.Hm, interesting; I didn't notice any of that.SilentCarto wrote:
- Spoilers for "The Cutie Map":
Incidentally, the Cutie Map stretches farther than any map of Equus we've ever seen (outside of a globe.) The continent that Equestria occupies extends southward beyond the badlands into a volcanic region that appears to be marked with a dragon skull. There's another continent East across the sea that is presumably Griffon lands, and -- most interesting -- a third continent to the southwest which is studded with acacia trees. Fillies and gentlecolts, I believe we finally have a canonical location for Zebrica!
Also of interest are a cluster of hills or caves (or hives?) directly across the straits from Zebrica, and a strip of tropical land (palm trees) stretching southeast along the seashore. That area includes an oddly specific depiction of a cove or cave, which must be rather important to feature on a map this big. Also notable is the absence of the Everfree Forest. It's unclear whether it's covered by the depiction of Ponyville, doesn't rate mention for some reason, or is somehow a blind spot for the map.
[looks at your name]
Oh, right. :)
Hmm, I don't mind waiting for a bit longer. I also need some more time to think how Equus' system works again. At least this time it will be more accurate ^^

Ah, oh dear; thank you very much. I'd seen the announcement and checked the list, but I didn't find PH there. I'll email Somber; hopefully he'll see the email soon.
And may I just say that it's kind of ridiculous that people are pirating things that are already free?

It's there. Only through chapter 48 for some reason, and marked as "Russian" even though it's in English, but it's there.
Also, "Simply Rarity."

The chapter and story are not messes, Somber. Well, okay, the chapter is still a bit of a mess, but that's because it's not finished. Since when are building sites neat and tidy?

Finally got another scene done. Hope it matches what's in my head. I really wish I could play music. I just can't write in the soundtrack...

You could put links in? You've done that in the past. I've not seen the scene in question yet, but would that not work?

Re: [GRIMDARK] Fallout Equestria: Project Horizons Discussion
In the beginning, Somber created Crumpets, and she said she was a lesbian, and it was good.
Then Somber decided that she had long had the hots for Paladin Stronghoof. And Somber saw the conflict so brought about, and struck the establishing dialog from history.
But such things have effects that may not be foreseen, even by such as Somber, and there was despair and confusion, and a new need for watchfulness.
But lo, seeing this, Somber has restored the actions of the past to their original form, to end all dispute.
(Crumpets said she was only into mares. Later, when a subsequent chapter indicated she'd been pining for Stronghoof, this was retconned to something else. This had some ripple effects such that some other events needed to be rewritten or removed, perhaps most notably the stuff around Blackjack trying to set her up with Glory on the basis of that remark, which was (in my opinion, anyway) an important piece in the buildup to some of the discussions and interactions later in the chapter. Now it looks like she's just claiming to be a lesbian again, and it's not too much trouble to think of reasons why she'd say that.)
Note: this is all going from memory, except looking at the latest version of 57.

“Damn it,” I muttered, pulling off the helmet. At least I hadn’t seen anyone I knew die, but this was almost as bad. Crumpets. Psalm. Was there any kind of good resolution there? Psalm didn’t want to kill anymore, but I could also understand Crumpets’s scorn for remaining inside where it was safe when she could have fought for them. And Stronghoof... ugh... when I got back, I was going to have to take him aside and explain how a mare like Crumpets obviously felt about him, and a mare like Psalm probably didn’t. Somber, you hold yourself to a crazy high standard. While that benefits us readers, you hating yourself or thinking your fic is anything less than epic (a word I try not to throw around casually) is utterly unwarranted. I'm just saying here.
