Re: [GRIMDARK] Fallout Equestria: Project Horizons Discussion
For reference:
This likely played a supporting role in me noticing it.
Now, bear in mind it's been a while since I've read the Psychoshy heavy parts of early-mid PH, so I may be off on details. But I do think that her incest thing was played heavier, or at least a little different here than it generally had been—not to say that that couldn't happen naturally; after all, her situation has changed quite a bit these last few months. Partially it's that there seemed to me to be some genuine ambivalence about her feelings—though it's also possible that was more about how Sanguine didn't love her back—and she at least fronted that she didn't care what anyone else thought through, in part, refuge in audacity exhibitionism. But even given that, I don't think that's why she wasn't really comfortable anywhere. Going a little further, as far as I know the batponies have only explicitly indicated intragenerational incest, and Psychoshy's was to her father. There could be that overlap, but not necessarily.
Looking back, the part that stands out most from a writing perspective is probably the Dangerfieldesqe sentence following.
And no, it's not like I think it's a bad thing, and it was entertaining; hell, I love your sketches and have made a habit of saving them off to a readily accessible file. I liked it, but it was recognizably in that style. An emoticon wouldn't have hurt in my comment, to add some emotional content to the sterile text. So have it now:
Question: Was this chapter's update submitted to EqD? I don't think it's shown up in their story updates since its publication.
My formatting, bolded text is what I originally quoted in the running thoughts.Sixty Six wrote:“Hey, I don’t hear you complaining about not being obligated to fuck your brother anymore! Regarding EQD, I'm not sure. I assume it was.

Oh well , time for me to stop lurking too them...
First of all , keep up the good work Somber you are awesome !
Now , regarding the current chapter , I have to say that the beginning surprised me a lot... and was kind of funny too.
The rest was... not so funny
Before I forget , kudos to the editors too , because your editing allow us the enjoy this story even more.

First of all , keep up the good work Somber you are awesome !
Now , regarding the current chapter , I have to say that the beginning surprised me a lot... and was kind of funny too.
The rest was... not so funny
- Chapter 66 Thought and Expectations:
-The beginning
Well , I am kind of sorry for Charm now... I wouldn't have thought that I could be sorry for her.
-The Legate and Steel Rain
Well , here come the glorious pair of a...... . Still wondering who I hate the most between these two.
Also , never.underestimate.Discord !
-“Myself,” he answered glibly. “I’m just not that flexible.”
I admit , I laughed at his joke. Too bad he didn't die because of his own weapon shooting him in the back , the irony would have been delightful.
-Charm being hostage.
Blackjack... why are you even bothering with negociating ?! It's pointless anyway given who he is !
Charm... Now that's what I call bravery. The ultimate bravado before death , but that was a damn good one. I felt sorry for her , now I feel respect....
-Steel Rain Cornered
When Blackjack utterly stomped him , I started laughing like a madman. His ridiculous plea made me laugh even harder. Sweet , sweet justice , served with explosions.
-Steel Rain surrendering.
No Blackjack , just no. Don't tell me you are even considering sparring him ?! Damn it ...
-"Security might save ponies, but some ponies just refuse to be saved."
Best.Line.Ever
-Whisper
Ah , that's kind of interesting actually , because Whisper is still the same as she was. Meaning we got a character who still is in the ealy PH mentality versus a seriously more mature Blackjack. The contrast is ... kind of magnificent actually.
-Hades
What an idiot. A fine addition to my hate list. Somepony should turn 'Shy into a batpony and give her his job.
-Luna
Luna...oh Luna... Now I am torn. I love Luna a lot and in FO;E she is depicted in a relatively good light. In PH , Goldenblood was always portrayed as the mastermind while Luna was nothing more than a figurehead...and now this. I don't even now if I should be angry (because loyalty to Luna and all that) or just slowly applaude while saying "Well played author , weel played;" You successfully caused me to despise Luna with this chapter , something I never thought I could feel. I still feel some sympathy for her because her actions were not entirely illogical and because in the end she was just a pawn with good intentions but poor ... long term vision.
I am foolishly hoping for some kind of redemption for Luna at this point... and a second betrayal from Rampage (and a resolution of her plot line , you know , the experiment with Blackjack extracting her memories). Those being my two favorite characters , the last few chapter were kind of painful for me I admit.
I thought about something as I matter of fact. The final duel is shaping up to be Luna (somewhat , her and Cog being similar) versus Blackjack ; and I can't help thinking that these two are similar , while being at the same time radically opposed. What I mean is , while both wan't to basically "save ponies" and "do better" , Blackjack chose to be an extreme idealist and Lune chose to be an extreme pragmatist.
Oh , and while I can't recall the terms of the prophecy , anyone thinking that "star maiden" could actually refer to Luna instead of Cog ? Meaning that Discord , by putting her soul here , actually caused the false prophecy of Amani to become a real one ? That would be one fine trick in my opinion. ( Again , sorry if that's utter nonsense... )
Before I forget , kudos to the editors too , because your editing allow us the enjoy this story even more.

With the people you hang out with on TS, I'm surprised you still can be disturbed.
ANYWAYS, OFFTOPIC...
Umm...yeah...
I'd have to say that one of the things that interests me the most about this latest chapter is that "shadow world" observation that Blackjack had of the gang and them running into Cognitum-jack. I really want to know what happened on their end, and moreover, why Glory was crying.

So I was doing some thinking, as I am wont to do, and had a little thought: What if Cognitum didn't actually kill anyone when she was beam sniping?
Blackjack did notice that she had impressive special effect skills when shown the potential destruction of the Core. Is it possible Cognitum simply used this skill to trick Blackjack into thinking all those places were destroyed?
Just a theory.

I'm pretty sure she was crying because BJ was finally back. If you remember, everyone thought she was dead and Glory was trying to find a way into the Core to try and find her. Probably tears of joy.RoboRed wrote:With the people you hang out with on TS, I'm surprised you still can be disturbed.

It's said there, and I quote: "Clearly, Glory wasn't happy". Though... it could be that she wasn't happy with Blackjack once again wanting to go save everybody just after she got back.
Which means Cogs is pretending to be Blackjack, which means Rampage is cunt for going along with that, and I am looking forward to P-21 blowing the shit out of her as soon as Blackjack will catch up with them, even if Blackjack will tell him to stop. Which to me would be.... ugh, look, Blackjack begging Rampage to help her and her ignoring that and just walking the freaking away after assuring her that she will make sure Cogs keeps her word and lets her go was about the most hurtful thing for me in the previous chapter. I really hope Rampage will suffer some consequences for that!
I cannot help but have a bad feeling that the reunion won't be so happy for Blackjack, though... which is a pity, as, given how much peril they all already are in I think we could skip more drama. But oh well.
On another topic, since now we have confirmed that Goldenblood is alive and kicking... was it him that send Blackjack that message back when she and Stygius were attacked in his house and signed it as "Spike"?
And on another hoof; when Luna explains how she was to blame, how she could surrendered to save Equestria... look, it might be just me being atheist, but am I really the only person who puts the entire blame on zebra for the Wasteland?! I mean, sure, I know that ponies were to blame for it too, but the whole reason why zebra's escalated the war was because they couldn't tell a freaking difference between Luna and Nightmare Moon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Look, despite being atheist, I do have respect for religions. One of my friends from high school was an altar boy in catholic church and despite having different opinions on a lot of things we got along. But I think those parts of religion that cause you to go on a slaughter spree, like the Crusades, the today's islam's terrorism (read an article about a 14 year old boy who's in prison for attemting to suecide bomb police station or something... for the second time, and didn't regret a thing, saying that Allah demanded the infidels to die) are about THE MOST IDIOTIC THINGS WE CAME UP WITH AS A SPECIES!!!
So yeah, to me it will always be the zebra's believes on the first place on the list of "Who's to blame".

In general Fallout: Equestria news, here's Ain't Love a Buck to the Head? It's a ponified version of the every popular song featured in Fallout New Vegas: "Ain't That a Kick in the Head."

Even if it was, it takes two to tango. Let's pretend that Luna gives up she orders a cease fire and surrenders herself to the Zebras and the Zebras accept, but they want to execute her. How would the ponies react to that? Would that spur them to forget their peace with the Zebras? Would they continue the war in the name of their fallen goddess? (Isn't continuing the war part of the reason in PH Celestia was better dead than a hostage?)
I don't know. I'm not going to claim to know. But in that scenario the ponies are just as bad as the Zebras. And as far as religion goes it's a little different in equestria, the pony's gods and demons walk among them.
I don't wanna get in the religous debate but I'd hope you'd agree that you can't make a direct comparison in this case.

And thank you for making my point for me.
I think it was mentioned at least a few times in PH that the Zebras would not stop the war until Luna was killed, so that's what they would demand if Equestria had surrendered. And... maybe I am thinking of ponies a bit too good, but I somehow doubt that they would let that happen. Sure, when you look at those traitors who used Psalm you can see that there were ponies who didn't care for anything and anypony, and had loyalty there where moon doesn't shine (;p). And heck, for that you can just look at the Enclave, who closed their skies, which Kkat had mentioned in the original FoE that caused strong winds across Equestria, which forced the Princesses to keep the barrier around Canterlot, so that the Pink Cloud would not spread through what was left of their country (in fact, one of the ideas I had for a FoE side-story would have mentioned that the pegasi worked together with the Zebras, and they closed the skies before the first balefire bomb exploded. Cloudsdale was destroyed a few days later by somepony who discovered the truth and was that pissed with the pegasi that he just blowed up their city ;p). But I believe that most ponies would generally not stand for Princess Luna be executed, so the war would go on, which in turn means this all circles back to it being mostly Zebra's believes fault.
Besides, after Littlehorn it was too late for peace talks. Both sides wanted blood after what happened there...
Speaking off, what exactly happened there according to Project Horizons? I remember that dream Blackjack had when she had bits of Psalm in her head (seriously, her friends put her through thoughest shit...), but even after reading it twice I am still confused. At the end there they stop shooting. So... who set off the bomb? (On that matter, what was a bomb like that doing in an refugees convoy in the first place...)
In another FoE side-story I read it was mentioned that the Pink Cloud was actually invented by Trueblood, and that it was being tested in a casino in the story and... via a collaborant, in Littlehorn. The author mentioned a few times that he tries to keep in cannon with a lot of other side-stories, including Project Horizons, so I don't know at this point had I missed something, or was it the author going a little bit creative with one of Somber's character.
I'm really curious about that one, as I had hoped to write a short FoE side-story in a few months that would center around... hm, some of Sanguine's old work. Though I am not doing anything with that right now, as I hadn't gotten a reply from Somber if that's okay, I'm still busy with the collage stuff (stupid BA Thesis!), and I need to finish two/three other stories of mine before I try starting something new.
Sorry for going a bit off-topic.
Getting back to the discussion... yeah, you're right that the War from FoE and... well, our real world shit shouldn't be compared (sorry). However, what I mostly was reffering to was how the Zebras, like the Crusaders and every other fanatical religious group, just wasn't allowing themselves even the tiniest moment of doubt. None of them ever went "Oh shit, what if we're wrong?". They didn't stop to consider that what they are doing might be wrong. In FoE we saw how Xenith reacted when she saw a piece of starmetal that made Nighmare Moon's armor, that it was just a piece of rock, when she had realized that what her people had fought and murdered and died for was just a rock. No evil whispering whatsoever, just rock.
Of course, in real life we cannot exactly have something similar happen, as goals of those who fight for religious causes mostly concentrate on spiritual sphere (not sure if I'm phrasing it right, english is my second language). I mean granted, the people that told them to do that were gaining money/power/influence, but...
Okay, I'm gonna stop here.
The point is, fanatism is bad.

Hi guys!
Welcome to both of you!Karazu wrote:So I was doing some thinking, as I am wont to do, and had a little thought: What if Cognitum didn't actually kill anyone when she was beam sniping?
Blackjack did notice that she had impressive special effect skills when shown the potential destruction of the Core. Is it possible Cognitum simply used this skill to trick Blackjack into thinking all those places were destroyed?
Just a theory.
Katazu, I think that that hypothesis has been proposed before, but it is an interesting one.
@Borsuq re the zebras:
With those premises, you'd be right, but we clearly have some very different views of what the zebras were fighting for. In my view/headcanon, religion was an extremely minor part of the zebras' motivation, and at their absolute moral worst they'd be no worse than the USSR in the Great Patriotic War.

Wait, I'm not sure if I understand what you mean. You're saying that their first concern was survival, right?O. But that also was kinda connected to their believes. They viewed Luna as a monster who had allied herself with the stars, so in their minds, losing the war would have meant annihilation.

I don't think that religion really comes into concerns about a loss meaning annihilation. I count the megaspell exchange as both the right thing to do and a victory, albeit very pyrrhic, for the zebras.

But even without religion Nightmare Moon was a threat in a lot of their lifetimes. To Ponies and Zebras it was proven to be more than a fable, they witnessed her return. Why would they ever believe Luna was anything else?
It goes further than religion. Luna as far as they're concerned is Nightmare Moon with a haircut and even without religion Nightmare Moon was an awful person, her sister thought so, and I can assure you she didn't subscribe to the zebra religion.
I just can't bring myself to fault them in the way you could, even if I did think that NMM was their main motive. I really don't, and I find it hard to believe the ponies were able to make that sepration without knowing her personally.
My blame tilts towards Celestia, as an experienced ruler and older sister she handed off her problems for someone else to solve. That doesn't make her a good example of either.

All right! Finally have all my other commitments out of the way and a nice chunk of time to dedicate to this.
Let's rock!
Let's rock!
- Execute Order 66:
Oh my. That's an... interesting... chapter quote.“Well, there's something here about a dragon, the kingdom falling, chaos reigning... Okay, apparently it was all because the prince and princess were so lost in each other's eyes that they couldn't perform their royal duties.”
Oh. Charm. Okay, reevaluating previous statements. But because she loved him, she believed him, and so she asked that she should someday rule the Society.
Has Charm been taking elocution lessons from Deus? But the Barbarian was a stupid cunt who ruined everything! Everything!
Oh, interesting... so she's still an active node...The pair had stood around for several minutes, and the Princess could feel the Barbarian trapped within the machine. The wires connecting her brain to the iron throne were still working, even without the Sorceress to control them.
Well, that's... good? news...It didn’t help that the Barbarian was still screaming in her mind. The top half of the machine was a flaming mess, but the bottom half and the platform was still intact.
Well, that IS his modus operandi. Orion/Amadi/Vitiosus is more genre-savvy than I'm comfortable with. Now the Vizier appeared particularly pissed. “I must triple check everything now. I’ve worked far too hard to let his ilk unravel everything. He did something. Changed something. Meddled in some way.”
What a tweest! Well... Un-twist? What do you call it when you twist a twist? Well, I love it, because I'd originally supposed that he had twisted a real prophecy to his own ends!“The prophecy is real. It was revealed to me by… higher powers. I’ve learned the best way to sabotage prophecy is to place someone unworthy in its role.”
I'm reminded of Scootaloo in the original FOE, where she talked about becoming "the villain of the piece" -- doing what needs to be done, even though nobody will thank you for it and those in power will demonize you for it. It's a common fate for those who oppose a comfortable but poisonous status quo, I guess.“You can’t imagine how infuriating it is to creep and skulk about because one of his little schemes put the Princesses on high alert and suspicious of everyone else trying to move up. He’s inspired heroes, elevated the Princesses, and legitimized their roles in Equestria. His petrification didn’t help, either. With his absence, any disruption to the social order was noted! It made this so terribly difficult. Had it not been for the war, I never would have had my opportunity!”
Welcome to Blackjack's world.“We must remove the soul immediately!” Then he skidded to a stop, his eyes wide. “Unless that’s what he actually wants us to do... but if he... but I... he... AHHHGH!”
Oh ho! Now I really want to know what the real prophecy was, and which parts he warped.“Thank you. Then she is not the true Maiden, now or ever.”
Oh.“The light of stars that died long ago, and would not go quietly into the darkness.”
Shit.
The Eater of Souls isn't just inadvertently helping the Things that Live in the Dark. It is one. Or... what's left of one after another star sacrified itself to destroy it.
Broken things can be repaired.“Blackjack is broken…” He muttered the phrase as if tasting it and finding it to his liking. “Good. Then all is accounted for.”
You would think that stars would more fully understand that a tiny shift can make the difference between an asteroid impact and a near miss, a few orbits hence.Discord affected something, but it was slight. The tiniest wobble of the outplay of events. A hair’s shift out of alignment, ultimately for naught.
Poor Blankjack. Then he sat down, tore off his helmet, and was violently ill over the platform edge.
You know things have gotten epic when mere megalomania seems rather petty.“That striped bastard thinks he can talk to me like that? Me? I’ll show him and his fucking stars who owns this world. I won’t serve anyone. Not him or Cognitum or Dawn or Crunchy Carrots. Me. I’m the one who should be in charge. I won’t be second to anyone. Anyone!”
...huh.“All the time. I’m always getting hurt. My body. My heart. My soul. Always getting hurt. People always shoot me. Even my friends shot me. Glory shot me in the face… but it’s okay. It was an accident,” the Princess muttered weakly.
Let's hear it for being a not-smart pony! She’s young. She and Blackjack both. I can only assume there’s enough space...
That explains why we're getting this weird third-person narration.“Because there’s none of Blackjack’s soul in her. Blackjack’s mind… her memory and personality… they’re just like a character in a story to Charm. Without her soul, they’re just detailed data.”
Everyone always forgets about Rampa--Then a great hissing mass launched itself from out of the shadows behind the three, clearing the filly and diving at the armored stallion. “STAY AWAY FROM MY KIDS!” the Revenant screamed in near feral rage...
--wait, what?...as the maroon ghoul opened his jaws wide, pink cloud boiling up his throat.
Awww yeah! Back in action!I lurched as everything came together, the experience like a board across my face.
...sans 400 pounds of strength-training gear.Without my steel augmentation, that teleport had been almost… easy.
Man, it's been a LONG time since she really used her precision magic tricks, hasn't it?My eyes focused on his guns, and my magic reached out and began to field strip the firing pins from both of them.
The entire room is full of starmetal, Blackjack!I examined the medallion. My best weapon? How was it a weapon? It was just a piece of moonstone covered in plastic. How could I use it as a weapon?
There ya go!The metal armor flashed white, then exploded with enough force to bodily throw him to the side, crashing like an avalanche into the wrecked terminals. The medallion shot off in the opposite direction, but I caught it with my magic. The plastic had melted away, leaving a tiny round wafer of moonstone within. Then I turned and took in his silvery armor. No wonder my magic bullets hadn’t even scratched it. “Starmetal? You lined your armor with starmetal?”
This must be what Gambit feels like every day.Given the armor had only been lined with it, rather than made of the stuff, I wasn’t vaporizing the pony within. I was, however, blowing apart hoof-sized hunks of armor with each impact, striking the moonstone hard against the silver coating. “You murderous son of a mule!” Away went the plate covering his shoulders. “You bloody asshole!” An explosion ripped a strip of cabling and reinforcement from off his neck as he staggered back.
Is it just me, or is this really reminicent of BJ's "everything I touch explodes" killing joke?
Ahahahaha! Nope, no exploiting her sympathy now!“Wait! You don’t understand! I was molested as a colt!” Boom went a foreleg strut. “My mom rented me out to raiders!” Boom went a chest plate. “Cognitum made me do it!” The left side of his helmet flew apart in chunks and a wide, terrified eye stared at me. “The Legate used his star magic on me! I swear!” His other forehoof exploded in a cloud of shrapnel. “Damn it, stop!”
It occurs to me that Steel Rain is a very childish character. At his core, he doesn't really know how to wield power except by killing people.
God dammit.hen, the fucker did the one thing I’d hoped he wouldn’t. He raised his bloody hooves in the air and shouted as loud as he could, “I give up!”
I can has Rampage now?He coughed weakly. “I surrender. I quit. I throw myself on your mercy!” My eye twitched as he pulled off the ruined helmet and grinned at me, his pink features now swelling up. He coughed again, bringing up bloody phlegm. “Arrest me. Lock me up. Take me to trial. I’ll pay for my crimes however you want.”
That was really, really dumb. Then he lunged forward, ramming us hard over the edge with a body slam.
Second chances. Not third. But I appeared a few feet away. He laughed as he faced me. “Sorry, but I just couldn’t help–” then his laughter died as he saw what dangled from my hoof.
I'm going to choose to believe that's Blueblood. One letter written by some politician about forcibly relocating zebras from Zebratown to the Appleloosan desert with the ‘other riff raff’ had the comment ‘Relocate to the Appleloosan desert’ over a drawing of a bound and gagged unicorn stallion being loaded on a train with a tag ‘To: Riff Raffia’ tied to his ear.
Oh! Well, that's not so bad. Say hi to Styg for me.On the far side, I stepped into a stone chamber lit with thousands of tiny star lights that swirled and twinkled overhead. The walls were of blackest marble shot through with veins of amethyst. Cold, imposing black statues loomed over us, their crystalline eyes seeming to follow me as I stepped away from the portal. With a slurping noise, it winked shut behind us.
“Oh, that’s not good,” I muttered, then observed my surroundings in more detail. This wasn’t a prison. It appeared to be some sort of castle.
Well... technically, all the decent weapons in the Wasteland were, too. But we know what you meant. There were racks of vaguely familiar armor on stands, wielding archaic weapons that seemed like they’d been forged centuries ago.
Knock first.More groans, moans, and giggles, from more than one person. Definitely not ghosts, or at least I hoped not.
The Redoubt. The only place to shelter from global destruction. Makes sense...“Another... well... okay, I’m not sure where. It’s a place that’s in Equestria in the Hoof, but it’s set slightly to... well...” Whisper glanced over at Stygius, who chirped and shrugged, looking over at his sister.
Tenebra rolled her eyes. “We’re in Equestria’s shadow. A place where Nightmare Moon could hide her forces as she prepared to conquer Equestria. When she was banished, most of her forces fled this place. Most. Those who remained maintained this place as best as they could.”
And may need to, before this is over. You could easily fit the entire population of most of the Hoof in here.
Oh, the eyes aren't genetic damage. That's just a thing.Another with missized fangs pointing in different directions, standing next to a mare with eyes that did the same thing.
Fortunately, you won't have any say by then.It is my fondest wish that, in a few generations, we will not need outsider blood any longer,” he continued with a distasteful curl of his lip.
Easy to check. See if Shadow Hoofington is still a giant fuckoff crater.I don’t know how many super massive explosions like that there’s been. The balefire bombs and megaspells didn’t touch this place, so... maybe?
Oh. OH! The fortress overlaps Star House! The portal must be in the basement! Then the door to the building opened, and a pony-shaped form emerged. Like everything else around me, she was ghostly and translucent like smoky quartz. A pale white glow in her chest spread light through her. I reached out and touched her wing as she trotted around to the side of the building and sat down. I stared at her face, slowly picking her features out. I stared for a minute, then whispered softly, “Glory?”
GYAH!The dark purple shape turned and looked at me, its head slipping out of the cloudy shell of my body. Step by step it emerged, regarding me with cool teal eyes. “It is not in my power to grant you that, Blackjack.”
I'm thinking this must be what motes see. They're probably images of their former selves on the other side.
Called it!“Dragonfire doesn’t always kill, though!” I snapped at her. “LittlePip used Spike’s to travel into the S.P.P. hub! You did the same thing to Goldenblood, didn’t you?”
Luna stared at me a moment, then whispered, “Yes.”
Augh! No! You can't leave me like this! I need the next chapter!Footnote: Loading, please wait...
So. Lots of revelations to process. I got too tied up in the story to comment much on the really heavy sections. Sorry.

Being that the other two are mesopotamian deities, "Ashtur" should be "Ashur".Ashtur. Dagon. Namtar. Show me…
laughingThe shivery light rang as if it were laughter.
This sentence starts and ends with the same prepositional phrase. In that light were strange, incoherent things suggestive of faces and tendrils and other terrible shapes hidden within the silvery light.
pale, soddenSuddenly, the hand of black energy withdrew from the depths, pulling with it a white mass, and set the sodden pale shape on the deck behind the blasted computer.
That's a cute way to put it, but "spit across" describes width, not depth...Their genetic pool is so shallow that you could spit across it.
Think about that sentence. You could easily fit the entire population... of most of the Hoof. So the rest would make it difficult? What? Change this to either "You could easily fit the entire population of the Hoof" or "You could fit most of the population of the Hoof". I suggest the latter. You could easily fit the entire population of most of the Hoof in here.
"clearly" and "apparent" conflict -- one suggests it's obvious, the other suggests you have to look for it.On closer inspection, there was clearly some genetic damage apparent in a few of them.
