[GRIMDARK] Fallout Equestria: Project Horizons Discussion
Source
Welcome to the Fallout Equestria: Project Horizons Discussion Thread!
This is the place to discuss Fallout Equestria: Project Horizons, a Fallout/MLP:FiM crossover fic by Somber. Story discussion is on the left, group therapy to the right. Please try to schedule your emotional breakdowns when they don't conflict with anyone else's.
Rules
We have just a few simple rules here.
- Don't put down Somber.
- Project Horizons is a grimdark fic which deals with adult topics, so we might discuss subjects that some readers may find uncomfortable. Be mature about it.
- If Somber or a member of the editing team says to end a discussion, please do so.
- Spoilers abound. If you're not current on the fic, we recommend that you catch up before you read on.
- Looking for random discussions that may or may not have anything to do with the story? Check out the [Official!] Project Horizons Comment Crew Chat thread!
- Have fun!
People You Should Know
Somber: The author of Project Horizons, creator of Blackjack, maker of awesomeness, is a small gray mare who lives in the head of a guy named David. Ignore her claims of suckage.
Bronode, O. Hinds, and swicked (also formerly Hidden Fortune and Snipehamster): Your editing team. They make awesome writing look all shiny and pretty.
Kkat: The author of the original Fallout: Equestria. Not a participant in this discussion (yet), but you should be aware of her anyway. If you haven't read FOE, why are you even here? Go! Read!

So it's more like she's deluded herself into believing her interpretation of what her marks means, even in the face of overwhelming proof that she's wrong?
Dawn, meet P-21, the pony who took one look at his mark and said 'screw that' to destiny. Really wanted at least one pony to actually do that in MMC.

Are his dots his actual cutie mark? I thought they were magical markings applied to suppress the identity of the males. Blackjack does ask him a lot to peel off his butt-markings to show his actual mark.

Re: [GRIMDARK] Fallout Equestria: Project Horizons Discussion
@Scienza I think that is part of OneMoreDaySK's point. As mentioned earlier, P-21 could take another name if he wanted to. Heck, Blue could even work. But he stuck to that name almost in a, I'm the 21st earth pony and I am still alive. Besides that, if memory serves me you are correct. It is, I believe, magical markings to suppress the identity of males. That being said, it is important to note that for every other stallion from Stable 99, that was their destiny. It was a cutie mark that basically 40 (not counting 21) had. A ticker that crept close to the death value over time. And P-21 hit the "unlucky" number. What did he do? He escaped and lived. Something only a few stallions even thought of attempting even when the gates were wide open to freedom. In a sense, the cutie mark illusion became his cutie mark. In fact, it is much like MMC. In that, the cutie marks got swapped up. Even with that though, what they were passionate for. They let their cutie mark take over their own life and gave up. P-21? He scorned it, snuck away, ran away, did cruel things to live longer, begged to become a teacher, convinced a mare to do many a thing including teach him, adamantly stood against getting a gun and when he finally had a chance he tossed aside the gun. It was his cutie mark and despite apparently being good enough at it for 2 mares to have an odd obsession with him, he still held on to what he loved finally becoming a teacher whilst somehow becoming stubbornly loyal to the mare that was one of the first to rape him, the one who so callously mentioned him as property, and who brutally beat U-21 to death in front of him. So yeah, basically a big screw you to destiny.

Re: [GRIMDARK] Fallout Equestria: Project Horizons Discussion
Lunar's pretty much covered my points. *internet high five*
In escaping and surviving, he defies the mark given to him by others deeming his destiny to die, at that age and as a slave. Methinks his thoughts would be, "You all wanted me to die? Screw that! I'm still alive! Me defying my mark proves that." In a second sense, keeping that same mark proves that he doesn't need a 'true' cutie mark to decide what he wanted to do, namely teach ponies. He doesn't need to look at his flank to reassure himself that is fate's design. It could be a teaching related cutie mark for all we know, and just as possible it could be something else. Point is he's not letting that thought decide what he wants.
Now in defense for MMC we don't know the extent at which Twilight somehow warped reality. It could've just been all in the main character's heads, with only the picture swaps. It could also be that Twilgiht messed up the whole world, booting them to an alternate reality where they are all failures. Note how their families weren't ever present through the episode before everything was reset to status quo, which could be evidens of them shifting back to their original universe. Personally I just blame the episode for trying to force a musical and a story just to fulfill the Alicorn Twilight Toy Mandate. Songs were appreciated, but they definitely were not as strong as in Pinkie's Pride as the plot had soo many holes I'd mistaken it for Cryssi.

I was really talking about when, after leaving her family, Dawn finally ran into Cognitum and decided that a delusional electronic imprint of a princess's brain was the way to save everyone that she'd always been searching for. Blackjack was still years from entering the picture. Certainly, there's subsequent jealousy that Dawn's "goddess" chose someone else over her, but that's not really relevant.OneMoreDaySK wrote:Now on to Dawn. Got to question her "Utopia Justifies the Means". Yes she gets hit with everything going wrong time after time, much like Blackjack. But I think what broke her was when Cogitum specifically pointed out that Blackjack was the chosen one, not Dawn.

Not a bad way to put it, actually...OneMoreDaySK wrote:Wait, so you're saying Dawn is suffering from CMFIS?
CMFIS sufferers often don't admit they've failed. They get in a descending spiral of trying too hard, failing, trying even harder, and so on. Dawn was at the end of her rope. If I remember correctly, she entered the Core looking for death, but found Cognitum instead. The way I interpret that, she was way beyond Want-It, Need-It Twilight. She had actually admitted failure to herself, and it was in that state that she had this answer appear in front of her on a silver platter. I don't blame her for grabbing it with both hooves, but then you have to look at her subsequent actions through the lens of desperation. Everything Cognitum wants to do must be right because Cogs is literally her last hope. We've never seen anyone suffer from CMFIS long-term, but I suspect that, on some level, she's aware of the mismatch between the ideals she espouses and the things she's done. The farther Dawn dives into that dissonance, the more she cracks.Scienza wrote:It's not CMFIS because she doesn't believe that she has failed. Wasteland Jesus isn't a goal, it's a foregone conclusion.
In a way, it's a dark mirror of Blackjack at Star Point. Both seeking death, both crushed by the weight of their failure to save people. Blackjack found her new hope in the Gardens of Equestria and the possibility of healing the world; Dawn found hers in a false Goddess's promise of a chrome future.
If the Bearer of Harmony can lie on occasion, then Dawn can let personal ambition overwhelm her loyalty to Cogs. After all, she's thrown everything she is into this, and she feels that Cogs is not reciprocating her dedication. You're probably right that she's hurting her own cause, but I suspect it's just another discrepancy she has to ignore.OneMoreDaySK wrote:I think what broke her was when Cogitum specifically pointed out that Blackjack was the chosen one, not Dawn. If she were truly on board with the 'Utopia' idea, she'd have not interfered. But instead, much like Azula being envious of all the attention Zuko gets, (good from Ursa, bad from Ozai), Dawn similarly takes it out on Blackjack, who has taken the spotlight in Hoofington.

I don't like the tern CMFIS. It was funny when it first popped up years ago but I'm really glad it never really caught on. First off, no one would actually name a psychological disorder "Failure Insanity Syndrome." That's like telling someone that it's their fault their brain is broken. Secondly, even though the show has sometimes shown the character's mental problems seemingly happen almost spontaneously, (22 minute show,) I wouldn't qualify even Pinkie Pie's breakdown in Feeling Pinkie Keen as 'insanity'. Depressed and delusional, sure, but haven't we all let our imaginations get away from us sometimes? Acting irrationally, doing stupid stuff because our emotions get away from us, is no indication of a full-blown departure from reality.
Not that any of this is a big deal really, since the term rarely pops up at all these days. I wouldn't be surprised if this was the first mention of it I've seen all year.

but there's two definitions of insanity.
So going by the first definition, Pinkie, and Twilight have showed at least brief insanity related to their cutie marks. Like in Lesson Zero and Party of One
but that's just my opinion

- lack of reason or good sense: extreme foolishness, or an act that demonstrates such foolishness
- psychiatric condition affecting legal circumstances: legal incompetence or irresponsibility that results from a psychiatric disorder

One of things that made Cupcakes so controversial was that it was released four or so months BEFORE party of one.

It's not an in-universe term, it's a joke. Nobody is suggesting there really is such a named syndrome in the show's universe.Derpmind wrote:I don't like the tern CMFIS. The point of CMFIS is that the characters start acting their most crazy when they have or believe they have failed at their special cutie mark talent. The failure is the inciting event -- "insanity as a result of failure". And the characters who've done this really have seemed insane -- not "doing stupid stuff" or "acting irrationally". You can't tell me Twilight's slasher smile in Lesson Zero or Pinkie talking to piles of rocks and turnips are normal "stressed out and acting weird" sort of things. It's a cartoon and things are exaggerated, and the syndome is a playful reference to that.

So, I'd say that, barring catastrophe or the like, we're pretty much certain to get the chapter out Sunday. It's currently some forty-five pages long and expected to get longer before we put the link up. Such are the events and revelations that I'm not even sure how to tease you without giving away too much. Instead, anyone care to make some guesses?

That new episode of mlp:Fim came frighteningly close to your idea of Flim & Flam creating flux. It's prob just a coincidence but it could also mean that someone in Hasbro might be reading PH. The fact that they brought those two back could be a testament to that.

Maybe it is a coincidence... but recently, I had realized that it's kinda weird that suddenly Fluttershy loves to sing, like a certain follower of her 200 years later, despite her primary interest being something else. There was another thing that remined me of FOE in season 4, but I can't seem to remember it right now...
On another note, if the author and the editing/proofreading crew don't mind me asking, just how long will we have to wait for the new chapter? Sorry that I am asking like that, I don't want to be rude, but I will be leaving home in literally 20 hours from now, and I won't have access to the internet until Friday evening. I will be climbing the walls for five days if I don't read it!

I'm standing by my headcanon that Mr. Horse is either Cognitum or at least related to her someway, Sweetie Bot is Cognitum's new body, and like most people, Rampage is Twist and Shujaa's daughter Peppermint.

Hm... seeing that there was a Star Wars reference a few chapters back... are we going to get "I am your father," line? That would be a twist ;p Speaking of Twist, I repeat what I said a few weeks back and what a person in the comment above said, that Rampage is Peppermint, the daughter of Twist. And Deus is her father! Which means we get that line!
Let see, what else... Cognitum is Nightmare Moon, either the real one (minus Luna, lets say the Nightmare Force got attached to a computer somehow), or a cybernetic copy. Maybe she's a Crusader Maneframe's imprint of Luna that went haywire? Or she was created like that by one of the projects... Wait, no, safe for Horizons, all projects are accounted for, right? Partypopper is the one to kill all the Ministry Mares and some other ponies that would have succeded Luna; Starfall was the one that created Trottenheimer's Folly; Steelpony and Chimera... do I even need to mentions those? And Eternity was for Rarity's experiments with the Black Book... Okay, I give up on that one.
Rampage is working for Cognitum. Duh. I hope she has some plan on her own, as she was one of my favorite characters, but if she really betrayed Blackjack, even if it was the only way for her to finally die... sorry, but I really hate those that betray their friends. I'm still mad for a former friend of mine from kindergarden, and I'm 22, for goodness' sake!
Okay, enough of my crap, let's get back to Project Horizons... we'll learn who is the father of Blackjack's foal? I mean, given that those spirits thingies told her he or she is okay, and she had been drinking after her fun with Stygius, so I assume that means it discludes him, and P-21 is the father, which would be the best, as it would make their (Blackjack, Glory and P-21) relationship so funnier, and Scotch would have a sibling (I mean, Blackjack already acts as her mother, I hope somebody will point that out to her). But... Boo had given her that pamthlet with giving foals to surrogate mothers in Star House after she got back to Glory... ugh, I hope I'm not reading to much into this, P-21 as a father is sooo perfect! Unless... he and BJ are (half-)siblings!
Hm, what else... obviously, given how the previous chapter had ended, we will probably get some answers as to Legate, Discord and Boo. Legate... with the last chapter, some people began to suspect that he migth have been around for the last 200 years. Given that we don't know anything about previous Legates, that is highly probable, but... didn't Lancer say his father was once different, but he changed after a hunt with his mother? That she returned alone, took her daughter and run away, and Legate got back later to the camp? I think he might have nearly died (or just died) and Sekashi prayed to the "stars" to bring him back... que the joke about him getting probed by aliens... and something happened. Then again, that seems a bit farfetched, as Sekashi hadn't been shown to have skills like that for one reason.
As for Discord and Boo... hmm, I would like to think that Boo truly began developing, and it wasn't just Discord controling her... after all, him wetting himself doesn't strike me as something he would do... then again, he could do that just to screw with them... Maybe him being inside of her (bow-chicka-bow-wow) had boosted her development, and he was protecting her from harm to the best of his weakened abilities, so this might be kinda like Jinchuuriki-Bijuu relationship thing from Naruto...
Oh, and please, please, tell me we will finally get the whole gang together, and Blackjack will tell them that she's pregnant! Rampage reaction was fun, but I reeeeaaally want to see P, Glory and Scotch react!
I mean, I know they are in the middle of the Core right now, and we will probably see her deal with Cognitum, but 45 pages is a lot.
I think this about wraps this u- wait! Echo! We will find out how he knew where Cognitum is and that it's expecting Blackjack! Maybe she took control over him somehow... I mean, given that he is a soul in machine... Oh, and maybe he's body is somewhere in there!
Also, if I recall correctly, Somber mentioned under chapter 62 in regards to Blackjack becoming even more machine (BTW, still props on Blackjack having one upped show's canon Twilight twice, fist by becoming a Queen, and then cyber alicorn, even thought the latter made everybody unhappy [myself included] it's still kinda awesome) to trust him, and to wait 3 chapters... so, will Blackjack get back her body!? I mean, if Glory got her wing back... Or, since she has a guy who can wrap reality on her side, he can snap his fingers and boom!
On that note, I have been wondering for some time what that perk Blackjack got a while back. "Kissed by Discord" actually does... I might read too much Naruto, but I was wondering if that won't turn out to be a deus ex machina like Shisui's eye that Itachi gave as a crow to Naruto... but now that we know that Discord had been with Blackjack all this time, that kinda loses it's point...
Okay, that's all I have. My body is ready! Bring on the chapter!... if you don't mind that is... and please, hurry, I want to read the new chapter soooooooooooooooooooooooooooo badly, and I won't be able to stay up all night this time, and I have to leave in the morning... I will probably end up downloading it on PDF for my phone, but I don't fancy the idea of reading it on bus... I like to read in the comforts of my bed...
Now! I have a funny question: who, from the entire cast of the PH (whether alive or dead already) would you like to see die the most, and how? Of course, I am doing this whole thing to show how much I dislike my most hated character in this story (I hate a fictional character so much, I think I need help...).
The one I would like to see die the most is Steel Rain, of course, and I would like to see him impaled on Deus cannon... or crucified, because karma (his actions did lead to that chapter that shall not be named).

Sorry. XD
If that were the case, there'd be no reason for Rampage to have red stripes. In order for this theory to make sense, Peppermint has to be genetically related to both Twist and Shujaa.Borsuq wrote:That would be a twist ;p Speaking of Twist, I repeat what I said a few weeks back and what a person in the comment above said, that Rampage is Peppermint, the daughter of Twist. “Are you okay?” Eclipse asked as she knelt beside [Goldenblood]. He glanced up in time to see the glittering mesh descend down and land firmly atop her inky head.
Suddenly, the machine let out a massive mechanical shriek, and the screens went wild. One exploded in a shower of sparks as the reek of burning electronics filled the air. The gold glow of Goldenblood’s magic yanked the mesh from her brow. In an instant, Psalm was on Horse, kicking his legs out from under him and following it up by magically pressing a pistol to his temple as she pinned him. The Crusader finally let out out an immense pop, and a cloud of rolling black smoke erupted from the top as the machine let out an anemic whine.
(It should be noted that this is not an actual Stable-Tec Crusader Maneframe, but a clone built by Robronco.)

Edit: This is apparently an incorrect impression I got. Sorry about that.
There's good reason to believe that he is in fact Orion, the Eternal Warrior from Sekashi's story. Though there's also those ghouls in Rocket Town who follow someone named Orion... hm.
It's not clear what happened on that hunting trip, but I suspect it involved Sekashi testing her theory about his identity. The first time Sekashi tells her story, here's what she says:Borsuq wrote:Given that we don't know anything about previous Legates, that is highly probable, but... didn't Lancer say his father was once different, but he changed after a hunt with his mother? That she returned alone, took her daughter and run away, and Legate got back later to the camp? I think he might have nearly died (or just died) and Sekashi prayed to the "stars" to bring him back... cue the joke about him getting probed by aliens... and something happened. Then again, that seems a bit farfetched, as Sekashi hadn't been shown to have skills like that for one reason.
“But, one day, she was on a solo mission scouting the lands around the black city when she fell in a storm. She was wounded and lost, and feral ghouls were closing in. Then she spotted through the clouds a single star. She promised anything she could to escape that horrible night, and the star accepted her promise.” She sighed softly and bowed her head. “But it also exacted a horrible price, for in her heart doubt was seeded.”
“What happened?” I asked when our eyes met again.
“She questioned the need and goals of the Remnant. What was the purpose of fulfilling the wishes of a Caesar two centuries passed? Were the stars truly evil? She used her position to learn lore of the stars, a forbidden subject to all but to most trusted zebra. But, eventually, the zebra became foolish, and the Legate learned of her studies. His rage was… profound.”
If he changed after a hunt with Sekashi, it's probably because that's when he found out his cover was blown.
Editing: By the way, according to the pluralization we decided on, that should be "...a forbidden subject to all but the most trusted zebras."
Well... I suspect his control was, until recently, more along the lines of nudges and hints rather than full posession. He couldn't just instantly jump her up to talking normally, after all -- everyone would know something was up. So he gradually increased his influence to give her the appearance of growth, and it worked perfectly. We never suspected a thing.Borsuq wrote:As for Discord and Boo... hmm, I would like to think that Boo truly began developing, and it wasn't just Discord controling her...

SilentCarto, you're suggesting that Eclipse became Cognitum?

Sorry if it's been brought up here before, but has anyone suggested that the Zebra that was with Horse when Goldenblood was arrested might be related to the legate? or possibly the legate himself?
GB seemed to know or at the very least recognize him and GB was at the time talking about playing into somebody's plans.

I don't know, sorry. We're not scheduled to start today's brushing session for another hour and sixteen minutes, approximately.Borsuq wrote:On another note, if the author and the editing/proofreading crew don't mind me asking, just how long will we have to wait for the new chapter? Sorry that I am asking like that, I don't want to be rude, but I will be leaving home in literally 20 hours from now, and I won't have access to the internet until Friday evening. I will be climbing the walls for five days if I don't read it!

Ah, thank you. It would have helped if you'd provided the chapter number, though.SilentCarto wrote:Editing: By the way, according to the pluralization we decided on, that should be "...a forbidden subject to all but the most trusted zebras."

Nnnno... Eclipse was Princess Luna in disguise. Cognitum is a brain-scan copy of Luna, or more likely, Nightmare Moon. At the demonstration in the passage I quoted, Horse first tried to scan Goldie, and when he avoided it, Horse put the helmet on Eclipse. He was clearly trying to sneak secrets out of their heads, and he got more than he ever bargained for.Evilgidgit wrote:SilentCarto, you're suggesting that Eclipse became Cognitum?

Anyway, Amadi acts like what I'd expect of a Starkatteri. Vitiosus doesn't. He seems quite sincere in his hatred of all things starry, even if his apparent methods, like the Brood of Coyotl, are strange for a zebra. If he is messing around with Starkatteri sorcery, I suspect it's in the vein of "fighting fire with fire". I mean, why would he help to create the Tokomare only to turn around and want to destroy the "cursed city" and break the Maiden of the Stars on its molten ruins? I'm not saying he's not lying through his teeth and/or misleading the Remnant for his own ends, but he's so obsessed with destiny and prophecy, even in private with BJ, that I can't think that it's all a front.
That said, assuming Vitiosus is indeed Starkatteri himself, he and Amadi would have been at least distantly related.
I apologize, I thought I had, but I'd only put a reference on the previous quote.O. Hinds wrote:Ah, thank you. It would have helped if you'd provided the chapter number, though.
My bad!
