I just recently found out about Sanderson's First and Second laws, the first one boils down to "The better the reader understands a magic system, the more it can be used to resolve conflict." (example Gandalf and magic in Game of Thrones don't solve conflicts vs. in The Dresden Files or Sanderson's own Mistborn series magic is used to solve many conflicts)
while his second law boils down to "Limitations > Powers" (aka, why Starfire from Teen Titans can only fly when she's happy, or why Batman has to fight his inner fears while battling the villan)
and when these rules are broken, the magic seems overpowered, and MLP does seem to suffer from this problem, however, the show people can't really go much deeper with the magic system, because it's mainly for little girls. Fortunately most episodes get around this somewhat by making the emotional conflict the main focus (Boast Busters, Return of Harmony, and even this latest episode), yet the problem is still there, and by extension for most of the fan-works based on MLP, unless the authors themselves go into the magic system in more detail

Good old sanderson. Liked how he ended Wheel of Time even if he can't write Matt to save his life half the time. But he's right, the more you know about magic the more you ask why you don't magic your way out of situations.

I like randomness just as much as the next guy, but my favorite form of humor is just deadpan wit. That's why I loved Good Omens, and A Modest Proposal (though my favorite part in that story wasn't even intended as humor, the author was completely sincere in offering "Be less like the Jews" as a solution to Ireland's problems)

I'm interested in watching the doc at some point, just 'cos Q (already seen the animatic/song, which entertained me), but my college campus has issues with streaming content. Mostly I leave things to buffer; and if I have to play a game, I do so at the science center, where the lag is not bad sometimes.
