Exactly how I felt.
I loved that store so much too. It was family owned and run, and they were some of the nicest people I'd ever met. Did a lot of custom work for military and gave me a good discount on the first rifle I ever bought. Got all of my ammo and stuff from them too. Really miss those guys. Plus they were the only Class III I knew of, so I lost my source to get any gun I wanted...

'Round here, other than some one-man operation in the old town, the main gun store around is Target World, who has maybe one or two good employees, and the rest are idiots. The range is criminally mismanaged and they don't carry a lot of popular guns, just eighty thousand different copies of the same shotgun, rifle and carbine

My town lacks gunshops entirely which is bad. In Old Milford there's this assface who owns a weapon shop, lot of swords and ww2 stuff. The thing is he doesn't like you touching the merchandise. If I can't get a feel for the weapon I'm buying then he can shove the gun up his ass for all I care.

Re: Gun/Military Thread
We have at least 1 military surplus store and a gun store in our 2-city-1-town area, never been to either.
We have an old M61 grenade with no filler around somewhere with a few missing bits including the spoon and pin. It's really cool and my mother took the precaution of shipping it rather than taking it on a plane back from Toronto. I should dig it out from under my bed sometime.

I like the new grenades that the Army uses. They have an impact fuse with backup timed fuse, so you can hopefully avoid the games of grenade hot potato you see on the old movies

Wish they made a bottom-eject autoloader shotgun. If they can make a rifle that ejects out the face then why not a cousin to the Ithaca 37?

I have a long-barreled (not sure on length but I think it's a 20 inch) side-x-side hunting shotgun in 12 Gauge as a family heirloom, my brother in Kentucky has it. 70+ years old and it still shoots wonderfully, has some kind of neat design on the action. It's obsolete but a beautiful gun and part of my family's history.

A personal favorite few shotguns of mine are the Benelli M3 and M4, the Mossberg 500/590, the Mossberg 930, and the Saiga 12. I have no experience handling the KSG, so it could be either utter shit or a weapon fit for gods, I don't know

I'd love to have one of these. Totally not related to me reading the Zombie Survival Guide 6 or so times.

I once saw a .458 Winchester Magnum conversion for the M1 Garand. I'm jelly.

It may not apply or matter anymore, but when my grandpa was in the army, him and the other officers would fight over who had to carry that thing. I say had to instead of got to because according to him the Carbine was a piece of crap that they all hated with a passion, and they all wanted the full sized Garand rather than get stuck with the Carbine.
Again, probably doesn't apply outside combat situation, but it kinda turned me away from the carbine as well.

The first thing that comes to mind every time I see the M1 Carbine is "Why not get a cheap WASR-10?"

I'm sorry, the Zombie Survival Guide is utter shit
As for the M1 Carbine, it's about $800 milsurp right now. For that cost, one could a Del-Ton DT Sport-- a basic AR-- and some ammo and optics

I just think the M1 is a neat little machine. I know I'm crazy.
They actually still make M1s for the sporting market, you don't need a milsurp one. Not sure if they are cheaper, though.
I enjoyed it as a book, not as a guide. I used to read video game manuals for entertainment. As I said, unrelated.Mister Frost wrote:I'm sorry, the Zombie Survival Guide is utter shit

What's y'all's opinion on the P90? I think it's a bit of a wonky design that's sort of underpowered, but opinions vary

The P90 works because when you hit something, you'd probably hit it multiple times, I'd figure. It's a PDW, really, and likely serves that purpose just fine.

Problem being that despite what the military channel will tell folks, PDW's aren't used that much. Either you're sticking to pistols or moving up to SMG's or carbines.

About the Bullpup issue, it would seem many modern militaries have a different opinion on the matter than a lot of the folks in the civilian shooting community seem to, considering More and more Militaries are switching to them.

Re: Gun/Military Thread
Generally with pretty solid reasoning. The real thing "against" bullpups was generally their reliability (both Famas and L85A1 had serious issues for a while, the Famas still hasn't really corrected it) and can often lead to a rifle you need to change out after a while (again, Famas) but offer just as much range and accuracy (if not more, the L85A2 is insane for long range fire) in a more CQB friendly package.
Now that better tech is beginning to sort it out, more are switching to them. Many of the countries that hold back (USA primarily) do so out of muscle memory and experience with certain platforms in their men. Try to sell a non-AR style gun to the US military and you're doomed to failure. Big things like them don't like that sort of sudden change in the same way smaller militaries can deal with easier. (And way cheaper)

Fuzzy's right on the money. IF the US does switch to bullpups it will be very slowly given the size of our military. Shoot, if Bushmaster wins the next rifle competition with its ACR even that will take a while to implement despite being AR-style (I think it's based on the AR-18)

Re: Gun/Military Thread
They've already completed that. We just switched to the SCAR as of 2 years ago. So if they're going to switch to a bullpup, it's not going to be for a long, LONG time.Ironmonger wrote:Fuzzy's right on the money. EDIT: This applies to the Army only. Everyone else is sticking with their M16's and M4's.

The SCAR was a limited run for the 7th Rangers, and they ended up canceling their orders. According to the Internet (which is always true) the Army, at least, is going to replace the M4 by 2014 with..... The M4A1, which is just safe-semi-full instead of safe-semi-burst. Really, the purpose of the burst-fire thing was to deal with poorly-trained troops wasting ammo blind-firing, and our troops are much better-trained nowadays. The burst-fire thing also has problems of its own, namely that it lowers accuracy firing in semi-auto, doesn't reset between firing, and lowers close-quarters lethality
