Re: Gun/Military Thread
I had a dream last night.
A glorious dream.
A dream where I bought a sight for my rifle.
A sight that was awesome.
A sight that could point out human forms to you so you could quickly find targets.
I didn't want to leave that dream.
I want it to be real.
I have a dream...

Hmmm...
Give it ten to fifteen years, and I think you'll see that kind of things deployed, at least for special force units.
You know, with all that "land warrior" shit and all...

And whomever thought of the process to replace a Humvee's serpentine belt, can seriously go fuck themselves. It's easier to take the whole damn crankshaft out than disconnect the fucker to slide the belt through. And if you don't have a ratcheting 15 wrench, haha well you're gonna be there a while.

Let me guess; the old green Humvee's, one probably has plywood for at least one door, more than likely heat, no AC, windows rusted shut, radiator caps decaying, belt decaying, no one's regreased the wheel mounts in years, and I'm guessing whenever you throw it in drive chunks of crud come loose from the transmission console.

Shuddup.
Doors are surprisingly still original ones, and the windows do work.
Everything else you said though...
Oh, and you forgot the dry-rotted water tubes.

Connecticut just decided that they want kitty to taste like potato:
"Again make lower-powered .22-caliber rifles illegal if they take detachable ammunition magazines and have two characteristics of assault-style weapons, such as a pistol grip, a folding stock or a clip for a bayonet."
Because we all know how dangerous those bayoneted and foregripped assault .22's the hoodlums are stabbing our children with are.

so cosmetic features are being mislabeled? again? ignorance must be bliss
finnier still is if you get a more traditional wooden stock with rifle grip and a massive magazine to go with it..

- guess who's going to benefit from free glider lessons?:
Yep. Apparently I can pass my glider licence for free thanks to the Airforce.
I'll see in the coming days how to get around doing that.
Also, I've completed my initial military formation. Now I'm waiting for my specialist training to begin.

Re: Gun/Military Thread
Apparently, the 101st (what my orders were for before they were cancelled *bitter grumbling*) had glider units, but nowadays they've realized that the troops should ideally get into combat before they die stupidly. That's why we've abandoned vehicles entirely and simply elect to ruckmarch everywhere always. Makes aquatic ops a bitch, though.

Frankly, I don't know why we invented cars in the first place. Rucks weed out the weak-hearted, so the rest can turn upon them and devour them. Really helps stretch your MRE supplies. Plus you can steal their socks. Fuck bullets, infantrymen need to be carrying, like, a fucking hundred pairs of socks when they march. All the socks. Ever.

I like my trucks, but stupid drivers still think they can cut us off like a normal vehicle. At minimum I weigh in at twenty thousand pounds empty. I don't fucking stop on a dime and I sure as hell can't swerve to avoid you. I don't care how boss you think you are with a Cummins and stacks and enough horsepower to twist your frame like a pretzel if you could actually use it all; my truck outweighs you by five and can crush you with no more effort than running over a pop can.

Well I've got a pair of these high-speed things called "boots". Not only do they get me around, I can buy a nicer pair of them (which I have) which not only lets me ruck even better, I can show them to my fellow infantrymen in the universal infantry shorthand for "my dick is bigger than yours"

As long as they're not Nike. Good for garrison wear, but they'll fall the fuck apart when exposed to things like "dirt" and "rocks".

Re: Gun/Military Thread
I spent it on a Henry. Went for the .22. Then got a Mauser. Then a Type 38 Arisaka, and fuck finding ammo for that, traded it for a Mosin, got another Mauser, then a Stevens/Savage shotgun, then a .44 1851, and looking at a beat-to-hell Ithaca as a project while keeping my eye on a S&W .40. Or a Super Blackhawk, because fuck subtlety. Will have to go for the .40 if I manage to land a job with an armored truck company, though.

I have an AR, and it's all I'll ever need because it's a demonic weapon that seeks the blood of its foes and can only be put into storage after slaking its thirst with schoolchildren.

Re: Gun/Military Thread
Newest find is a sporterized Remington 1917 Enfield. They did a decent job of it too, and it came with a high-power scope. As much as I love the original configuration of surplus firearms (or non-permanent alterations), couldn't let a gun like this go. 30-06 might not be the cheapest, but it's a helluva lot easier to find than 8mm.

Re: Gun/Military Thread
A little history of the Remington M1917:
A similar design to the SMLE, the M1917 entered service in 1917, and quickly surpassed the Springfield 1903 in numbers with around two million produced; while heavier, it was proven slightly more accurate than the Springfield using iron sights. It was the rifle Alvin York earned his Medal of Honor with, along with his Colt .45. After WW1, many were placed into storage or sold for civilian use. It proved so popular as a sporter Remington released the Model 30, an easily modified version. The M1917 was continually issued to Chemical Mortar units, as well as artillery units at the start of WW2, and was seen issued to rear-echelon troops in France.
We also issued many to Philippine militias, as well as Denmark and Norway. Britain used them as trainers and the Irish Defense Force were also issued the M1917.
After WW2, it was taken off frontline duty. However, it still served as a sniper rifle in Korea, and some even filled that role through the earlier stages of the Vietnam War. Today, it's still used as a ceremonial rifle, and as a battle-rifle for the Danish "Sirius Patrol", which enforces Danish sovereignty in northeastern Greenland and has the ability to engage militarily, home to a giant national park. Almost a full century after it was first introduced, the M1917 is still in service.

I'd go with something higher-caliber. The Savage Axis is a good base, comes pretapped for scope mounts, and is available in anything from a .223 to a 7mm-08.
