I fully intend on getting a Ruger 10/22 Takedown as soon as I can, but first I'm getting a Maverick 88 Security.
I once heard/saw someone say that a .22LR can take down an Elk under the right conditions, but I kinda doubt that.

Probably be faster to use the .22 as a club and beat the Elk to death.

Just keep cleaning, cleaning, cleaning....
The internals are in good shape (considering it's 70+ years old). Now to take the thing completely apart to get ALL the cosmoline out. There's no end to it. I'll get some before/after pics up one day after I get it firing again.

On cosmoline:
If it's been hardened from age, Wikipedia suggests spraying it down with a penetrating oil, allowing said oil to be soaked up by the cosmoline, and then wiping it away. If it's gotten into a part of the gun that's difficult or awkward to get at, I suggest using a dremel with a small nylon brush attachment and wetting the brush with your preferred cleaning solution.

Re: Gun/Military Thread
Everything involved in the firing of the rifle has been cleaned of cosmoline. Still in the wood though, and I'll get most of that out tomorrow. Provided it goes well, I might give it a shot or two. Of course the only ammo I could find was 60-year old surplus Yugoslavian, and it's corrosive, so MUCH more cleaning after that.
Thoughts so far:
The rifle is an extremely solid piece. It feels real when I hold it. The newer bolt-actions and semi's I looked at felt more like toys than firearms. Cleaning out the cosmoline is a fun adventure of itself, and there's a certain satisfaction of working on it that I'm starting to love.
And because I said I would, here's a few 'Before' pics. I'll get the 'After' ones up when I get finished. :::Large images, multiple spoilers:::

That is a lovely old weapon.
On an unrelated note, for those of you who like anime, high school girls, and armored fighting vehicles, the entirety of Girls und Panzer is now up on Crunchyroll.

I've come to have a distaste for gun-centric anime (and much of anime in general, save a few) after watching a few episodes of High School Of The Dead, which seems obsessed with interrupting actual fight scenes for shots of the underaged girls' undergarments

Well yeah, HSotD is pretty much a porn (and you ought to have been able to tell that before you started watching). And where did you get the impression that it was gun-centric? Would that be from when somebody was sniping with a nail gun, or when they were complaining about only hitting three targets with a single trigger pull from a shotgun?Mister Frost wrote:I've come to have a distaste for gun-centric anime (and much of anime in general, save a few) after watching a few episodes of High School Of The Dead, which seems obsessed with interrupting actual fight scenes for shots of the underaged girls' undergarments
Girls und Panzer is pretty much all about the tank battles, with secondary focus on the characters and their interactions/motivations, quite a bit of technical accuracy, and no nudity whatsoever from what I recall.

While I was hanging out with Frost I came up with the idea to give a Mossberg 590 the name "Smite Evil", and perhaps a carbine the name "Suffer Not". We come up with odd ideas like this sometimes.

Well, that ol' Turk Mauser shoots. Still highly accurate, the surplus ammo not what I'd like to be putting through her, but it's 196-grain FMJ and all I could find at the moment. That being said...
She kicks like a mule and sounds like a cannon.

Sounds like my type of gun. I intended on getting a good ol' Kar 98 for hunting, but I think I'll go the extra mile and get a Remington 700 in 7mm Magnum.StoneSlinger88 wrote:Well, that ol' Turk Mauser shoots. However, owning a Turkish weapon does sound very appealing from the perspective a history fan.

Yeah, the old guns do have that "I'm holding a small artillery piece" feeling you can't get nowadays without dropping $2500 on an elephant-hunting compensation gun

I had a friend at my gunsmithing college who, for his final project, built a custom big game gun out of a Mauser action and chambered it in .458 Winchester Magnum. He was also several inches shorter than me and was real scrawny. Needless to say, he also installed a muzzle break and a very good recoil pad as well.

$2500? Lol. That was the price BEFORE the "they're going to steal all of my guns" scare started. Your pricing's a little bit too high for an AR style rifle. My dad sold both of his ARs for roughly $2,000 a piece during the initial price hike after the shootings(which is roughly double what he payed for them), and I just checked gunbroker.com and found a M4 style rifle chambered in 5.56 asking for $1,000 minimum, albeit I don't know what the quality of its manufacturer is, but still.
Further more, it's assault style weapons that are in high demand right now. Big game sporting rifles like what you use on elephants haven't been effected nearly as badly. Although Frost still low-balled the price of an elephant gun, those rifles usually start at around $5,000 for commercial and go all the into the $10,000s for the custom gun depending on the guy you have do the customization.
And Frost, it isn't that hard to get a hold of a modern rifle that will put you on your ass. You just have to buy a large caliber rifle with a featherweight, fiberglass stock that uses a PoS buttpad and has no other type of recoil compensation.

The $2500 hundred was really just a low-end number, I'm aware. I'm contrasting that to, say, my $100 Mosin.

Sheesh, if assault weapons really are hiking in price, then maybe it's actually a blessing that I have a thing for traditional-style rifles.
...I feel heretical for saying that.

You're still low-balling the prices. Mosin Nagants are averaging out at, roughly, $250 right now on Gunbroker. Boy, it really says something when even a nagant is doubling in price.

Gunbroker's not much of a measuring rod for prices. I picked my Mosin up at a gun show for $100 (granted, that was a year and a half ago) and the Glock 23 my family bought my dad for Father's Day was something like $400 on Gunbroker, but we got it from a local gun shop for a little over $300

Re: Gun/Military Thread
Well, thanks to my tax return and seeing a fashionably low price, I brought home a new handgun today.
I was looking to get a Springfield XD40 because my dad has the sub-compact version and I love it, it's super comfy to hold and is a fantastic gun.
BUT THEN, THERE WAS THIS FN. I found the XD40 (and a compact version too) which I looked at, but then they had an FNS 40 that caught my eye so I thought "what the hell, I might as well take a look. Even if I don't get it, it wouldn't hurt". Personally, I've always been a fan of most of what FN makes, they're great at making firearms (I would f*** an M249 if it had a hole big enough), and their pistols have always gotten great reviews from what I've read, so I wasn't worried about it's durability or stability.
It feels amazing to hold, definitely sturdy and strong. It's got good weight behind it, so the kick is smaller than other handguns I've used, and the sights are clear and easy to line up. The trigger pull is wonderful, and I was attracted to the actual safety lever rather than a grip-safety and trigger safety (it's got a trigger safety too, but I always feel better with a safety lever because I'm used to them).
Took it for a 50 round test drive (not as much time as I thought it would be, but that's what a 14 round magazine gets you), and only loved it more after that. Plus it's familiar and easy to break down, and it just looks straight up sexy as hell. Generally I like solid black or possibly coyote accents, but I'll admit that handguns with a silver slide are damn good looking.
And with 3 magazines and a price of $540 I almost creamed myself, so now it's mine.

FN is some damn good shit. Their pistols, to my great pleasure, avoid the habit that their long guns have of being slapped into a boxy polymer shell just to look "futuristic".
To be honest, I prefer H&K a lot of the time, though
