If someone intentionally breaks into my house carrying a weapon, that tells me he intends to use it. And I fully intend to use mine in defense.

Oh, and because this is funny as hell and related to the current matter.

So, the other day, I went trapshooting for the first time in years with a friend of mine. I'm a little better than I was. Oh, and my chin and shoulder hurt right now.

I'd like to get a Maverick 88 since it's so cheap, but I'd rather use the old break-action (which still works like a charm) until I can acquire enough dollar-monies for a Mossberg 590. Clearly the break-action is more of a It's fun, but at least it would be something until I can get something proper.

I'm turned off by the Remington 870 because i have heard that if you break the extractor, you can't replace it yourself. You gotta send it back to the factory. If I break the Mossy I can just fix it myself and be done with it.

why send it to a factory when a gunsmith and replace it in a few minutes? just watch the guy do it, then do it yourself

I'm afraid that you have been severely misinformed my friend. This is a Remington 870 extractor. It is a tiny little piece held onto the bolt by nothing more than a plunger and a spring. You can order replacements with ease from just about any mainstream part dealer and, with a small flathead screwdriver, a punch, and a bit of a finesse, you can quickly and easily switch them out.

Just be careful when you do switch them out, those springs have tendency to shoot out, and I can tell you from personal experiences that it is a bitch to track them and the plungers down once they've shot across the room and landed on the floor.

70+ year old custom shotgun, barely any wear.

Whatever you do, Ironmonger, make sure that double-barrel shotgun doesn't have damascus barrels, and if they are, DO NOT fire modern shotgun loads out of them. They will literally blow the barrel apart.

This is because Damascus barrels were made by wrapping ribbons of steel around a central pole and hammer welding them into a single cylindrical tube. While it was effective at the time and the barrels are beautiful if properly finished, they are very weak and were designed for black powder loads. Modern smokeless powder ammo will actually force the welds apart and cause the barrels to unravel, destroying the gun and quite possibly causing you severe harm.
-Today's gunsmithing lesson was brought to you by the letters "N""R" and "A".

On another, slightly funnier, note. I went to a Gunsmith career fair last month and they had the NRA booth set up right next to the BATFE booth. Anybody else see the humor in that?

Thanks for the info, my brother said he fired it and it worked like a charm. He's a little less gun-savy than I am (mostly because I study this stuff religiously), so it should be safe to say that he used modern shotgun ammo. I'm not dumb enough to bet my life on that, so I'll double check.

On that second note, that is pretty funny. That's gotta take some balls.

There's really two easy ways to tell if they are damascus barrels.
1.)If the gun has exposed hammers, than there's a good chance the guns old enough to have damascus barrels.
2.)Look for a spiral pattern going the length of the barrel. It's a dead giveaway that it's damascus, as a modern barrel will have a uniform grain to it.
And remember, just because it didn't blow up the first time it's shot, doesn't mean it won't blow up the fiftieth time.

On the second note. The representatives of the two organizations are actually quite civil to each other outside of the courtrooms and political circles.

Thanks for the advice. It's a hammerless shotgun, but I'm not too sure about the barrel. It's been several years since I last saw that gun.

EDIT: Anyone find a point to the 10 Gauge shotguns? I've read that the 12 Gauge magnum rounds make them obsolete. I'm only asking such a basic question because it's hard to find certain pieces of data.

Oh, so it was hammerless. Just to clarify, is it an Over/Under, or a side-by-side?

As for 10ga shotguns. I'm guessing their existence is due pretty much to the philosophies of "Bigger is Better" and "Real Men Use Big Guns".

Side-by-side. It's been used for small game hunting and probably birds. Unlikely to have been tested against deer because, according to my dad, deer used to be uncommon in Kentucky during his day, at least in that area. His dad ordered it from a magazine or something way back in the day, but I don't remember what company.

Well, I just discovered why weapons like Kel-tec's PLR-16 and the huge .50 caliber revolvers exist; The hunting laws in some states are complete and utter bull crap. Example: Ohio does not allow rifles, except for muzzleloaders, for hunting deer, but allows any kind of rifle for things like squirrels and raccoon. Sure you can use a shotgun, but still.

And apparently the official reason why they build those big .50 and above revolver is to "hunt big games".

With a handgun.

Can you really take that kind of things seriously ?

It's possible to take them if you place your shots in the right places, but it's extremely unwise to be that close to large game. The big guns are advertised as hunting or predator defense, but for the larger stuff it's just smarter to stick to a rifle. Main thing we have to worry about where I live is coyotes, mountain lions (although that's actually clear across the state), and wild boar.

As defense against wild predators and other menacing fauna, the kind of weapon that's easy to always carry on you, I could perfectly understand their use.

But to advertise them as hunting weapons is just sheer madness.

Keep in mind even a black bear can reach over 400 pounds. Large-caliber handguns are a good backup to a rifle when hunting with large predators in the area, especially when hunting with muzzle-loaders.

Anyone ever shoot a 10mm pistol? I'm looking into getting one since it's the .357 Magnum for semi-autos (though I have heard it has more energy at 50 yards than the magnum). My next step would be to get a 10mm carbine.

I could see this used as a self-defense less-lethal weapon. And as a non-penetrating self-defense thingy for crews of passenger aircrafts.

I just wonder how much it would cost to get one made.

Also I see a number of improvements that could be made to rugg out the design : better protect the lens, stripe out the useless leds, change the ergonomics of the handle...

Oh yes. It would be glorious.
