So I bought the FONV Ultimate pack when it was $20 on Steam, and I've been playing my way through it when the mood struck.
For the first time, I played Honest Hearts.
Morning Glory(!) Cave, Randall "The Survivalist" Clark's terminal, talking about the group of children that would ultimately found the Sorrows tribe:

Somber, did you do that on purpose?!April 25th, 2123
24 of them, half boys, half girls. Youngest is 8 maybe, oldest 13-14. Dirty and scrawny, been on foot a long time. Children's crusade.

I'm pretty sure that the Hoofington Crusaders are named for the CMC; IIRC Arloste mentioned something about liking to watch them but being disappointed at not being able to join again, leading me to believe that it was one of Twist's old memories that produced the name.SilentCarto wrote:So I bought the FONV Ultimate pack when it was $20 on Steam, and I've been playing my way through it when the mood struck.

It's not a very uncommon word in western culture (even though if you look at the literal meaning it's so much worse than, say, jihad).

And this is one of the big reasons why I'm an editor instead of a writer.Caoimhe wrote:Remember fic writers: your story needs a theme as well as a good setting. I just went through the first couple chapters of 3 random fics on fimfiction and none of them had a good idea of what the hell kind of story they were trying to tell, but they did elaborate on the setting a whole bunch. Not having character motivation makes for a boring as hell tale, especially when it's in serial format.

Oh, you're talking about her saying that was the very silo where Pinkie invented the first party?O. Hinds wrote:It looks like Silver's words were inaccurate, then. Not too surprising.
Yeah, I wouldn't take that as canon. It's her parents' farm, and it'd be one hell of a coincidence to be growing up where Pinkie was born. I just figured it was part of her crazy.
1:23 - Wait, I remember this level from Star Fox...Caoimhe wrote:Have a seizure inducing Pet Shop Boys video, thread.
It's not so much seizure-inducing as really trippy.
Yeah, Twist. As far as we know, she sat in Miramare Crater until she died, then something eventually prompted the Phoenix Talisman to regenerate as Rampage. At least, Twist's bones were in the tank in the crater, and Rampage woke up outside of that self-same tank. There's a blackout period where the talisman could have been quiescent, or there could have been an entirely different Rampage who "died" when she returned to that spot and managed to damage the talisman enough to foul its memory backup.Meleagridis wrote:On a slightly related note, does anyone remember the last known holder of the talisman?
Why did I just have a flashback to Planescape: Torment?
Well, in-universe they ARE named after the CMCs... but two groups of post-apocalyptic orphans being referred to as "crusaders" is either an incredibly awesome coincidence, or deliberate.Sindri wrote:I'm pretty sure that the Hoofington Crusaders are named for the CMC; IIRC Arloste mentioned something about liking to watch them but being disappointed at not being able to join again, leading me to believe that it was one of Twist's old memories that produced the name.

Re: [GRIMDARK] Fallout Equestria: Project Horizons Discussion
On the subject of writing fics and such...
Yeah, having good characters and plot is tough to pull off. Too tough for me, last time I checked, but I'm getting there. There's no specific trick to it, nothing like that. It's daunting more than anything, but if you can build your characters' motivations to go along with a nice, or even just moderate plotline, a good story will come of it. Of course, this comes with practice and observation. Not one or the other, both. I think. But who am I to give such advice? I'm not a good writer, really.
See, my first story series doesn't have overarching themes except for the characters being part of the antagonist's games... again and again, until that antagonist gets careless and loses. It is then that the real game begins and the story becomes srs bsns. Other than that, it's the fact that no one other than the main characters can do what they have to do, so the responsibility falls to them by default. They have to do it, or be destroyed. No-brainer there, what my characters are going to want to do.
My second story has the major theme of hopelessness, (which is fitting, since it's a Warhammer 40000 crossover, one that isn't too great) it's my one dark tale, and I enjoyed writing it, (and plan on writing more dark stuff in the future) but absolutely hate how it came out in the end. Still... it's one of my most liked works. (26:1 ratio.)
Neither are especially strong, especially in the character department. In the first story series, the characters are motivated by default because of what, exactly, is at stake. I hadn't needed to give to or explain the motivation of them, as it's in the conflict itself. The second... the characters are initially motivated, but, keeping with the helplessness I described earlier, they lose that motivation and end up fighting for their lives and little else, eventually realizing the futility of it all, and almost giving in.
Anyway, along with my off-topic self-promotional/deprecative ranting. Themes, motivation, and characters are really important. With a good plot but not those three, the story crumbles. And as Kipper said, planning. Much planning should be done. Doesn't have to be too too much, but some, at least. After all, you're going to want to know where to steer your story and when, but you needn't adhere to what you had planned. As Dwight D. Eisenhower once said:
"...plans are useless but planning is indispensable."
'Ere we go, some words from me on the matter.

Glad I missed whatever happened.
Re: Children's Crusade: This was a historical event and was the alternate title of Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse Five which has more of a metaphoric sense, but yeah, it's basically children on a crusade. Not much significance.

They were offered passage to the holy land by a merchant, and they agreed. The merchant sold them into slavery and I'm pretty sure others drowned. *folds hooves with a blissful smile*
There's a reference to the latest PH chapter in there.

Yeah, as a cliche it implies a kind of 'turn of the screw' power play of morals with no names without a say, especially within the context of war

I don't think you'll get into Swicked's super secure nuclear plant with that, which everyone knows is actually his secret base.Ironmonger wrote:swicked wrote:I, for one, found it udderly hilarious.
