Not nuclear waste, which melts down into a pool of glass, but stuff you could use to make actual bombs, and the only reason they aren't breaking it down into a form that couldn't undergo a run-away nuclear reaction is it'd cost too much.

It's just going to be out there, burried in undisclosed locations around the original atomic bomb test site.
Yes, this is terrible and stupid (though honestly it's not that hard to find weapons-grade radioactive material; after the fall of the Soviet Union there are places you can find it unattended in a shack with a simple padlock for security). My point is that the word 'nuclear' tends to make normal people (idiots) even more stupid than usual; they have a kneejerk reaction to say no to whatever is being suggested at the time which includes that big scary word (better power production, safe and secure storage for materials that could be used to kill thousands, etc.) and completely ignore the fact that the alternative is almost always objectively, massively worse in every respect.

Gah. Radioactive material shouldn't be kept in the middle of some desert, it should be kept in facilities that have active security and surveillance. If that crap gets in the hands of the wrong people we get a pretty terrifying prospect.
And, it would keep it from contaminating the environment.

Out of sight, out of mind, but not out of danger.

Adder will probably have something to contribute.

I once heard someone say "Humans are intelligent, people are stupid." I believe this applies.

It would probably be inappropriate to the tone of the discussion to say that I first heard this phrase in Men in Black.

...

To continue the post in the appropriately somber tone... Finding out that the writing flaw exists wasn't sad. It was finding out about what it's named after. Actually, I stumbled upon a video of it.

That's really my only point -_-
Yes, but *deep breath* That costs too much money, and we can't keep it all in one place, it'll kill everyone around it if there's a leak. What if somebody breaks in? Who ever thought this was a good ideaaaaaaa? /idiots whining about it.
^Those are the reasons it's funding was cut off and it remains unfinished...a specifically designed, leak-proofed, highly secured bunker to store it all safely...
but you know what, sand is a much safer place for it.

Throw it all in the Marianas Trench, maybe? No, stupid idea.

...But who's going to go down there and get it? Nobody, that's who. For the simple reason that you can't.

Yeah, nobody could steal it because it would already be spreading across the ocean. It'd probably dilute enough to not kill anything after a few dozen miles though...

Uh, weight it, maybe? Oh, but the currents, yes. The trench is hella deep. Like, deeper than deep. Deepest water on Earth. Probably enough water down there to shield anything we care about, anyway.

Yup. If the pressure is too high for submarines to reach it and extract things, the pressure is too high to simply dump something with extremely high toxicity down there.

Hell, dumping radioactive waste anywhere near open water is unforgivable, in my book.

I've talked about this issue forwards, backwards and sideways SO many times...

It's really just the fact that the government turned down such a nearly-perfect site for commercial waste, then dumps their own actually DANGEROUS waste in the sand inside a couple hundred miles, since that's cheaper than converting the fuel into a less reactive form or, gezz, actually building a storage facility for them...

...just what the fapples, man?
Stop using logic to argue what the government does Spike

I used to be one of those type. Then I started having doubts like "Turkey seems to be doing fairly well so it can't be the religion itself...". Then I see this. Complete change of heart. Shy

Most people just don't want to fight. It's the vocal and violent minority that makes the news, and news has to be interesting, so news networks will publicize the least desirable and most politically-correct-to-criticize (with the exception of FOX News, who just seem to pick on everyone).

It's like saying all Christians hate gays, saying that Islamic people hate America and its allies. Sure, a few of them might, and they're visible, but that doesn't make it true for all of them.

It's the way of the media.
They want people to watch them and nobody else, so they find on thing and blow it so far out of proportion you can't even tell where it started, including making it sound like an entire group has one thought process when really less than 5% of them do. Like the whole thing with Chick Fil A. Fuck realism when making everything overblown is a better story.
