Re: [GRIMDARK] Fallout Equestria: Project Horizons Discussion
Chapter commentary time.
- Spoiler:
- Mares and Stallions? No idea where this is going...
Also no clue to the page quote.
Right. Just a big black rock. Ordinary mountain. No, really.
Ooh, green grass? Fresh water? Is there some sort of anti-radiation stuff in that mountain, was it never hit, or does the fallout just not stick to obsidian, causing it to get washed away centuries ago?
Slit pupils? Dragon, changeling [no, Somber’s never using them], nightmare-thing, chimera, or Lunar Guard?
Looks like a Guard. Remarkably well-reserved Canterlot Ghoul, or looter?
That’s a lot of crazy. But she’s reacting better than she has for days...
Sniffed? Is this a Blank in Lunar Armor?
Ohdear. This will not end well. Best option is probably to throw him in the pool? And run?
Yay! Progress!
And somepony to talk to is a good thing. To get the last few weeks straight in her mind if nothing else, and keep her out of her own thoughts for extended periods. Hopefully the rules he broke were more along the lines of “don’t talk to outsiders” rather than “kill anypony too close to our settlement.”
Big pink bubble? Hey, see if you’re the key to this one too!
Pretty. Why do I not trust those flowers? Any “indescribable sweetness” sets off all sorts of alarms...
Birthday presents? Run. On the other hoof, then you’ll never find out what happened h- <b>doesn’t matter. Run.</b>
Aaand why does she never run? Okay, innumerable combat-equipped flyers. Grendes? No P-21. Magic? Large automatic weaponry? Lacunae and Glory miles away. Running? Right into the middle of things. Lovely.
Okay, crime scene. Grounds undamaged, probably not the ones from the museum or the Cakes or other bullet-riddled atrocities. Presents indicative of events? Unlikely; probable that MoM would not label their crime scenes in a way that’s obvious so as to not make them common knowledge and reduce moral for neighbors, but still needs to keep interlopers out; gift box security system probably standard procedure for urban/suburban crime.
Goldenblood’s house. Bloody... okay, you need to be sane for this. If the bots are staying outside, set your batpony on watch and sleep. Here. On the floor in front of the door.
And something’s hacking your cybereyes again, giving you visions of Goldy. An old automated protocol he left for the bearer of EC-1101? One of his modern enemies trying to turn you against him? Sheer random fluke?
So Psalm blamed herself for Littlehorn? There’s gotta be a story behind that. And the mentor-student bond seems to be particularly strong here; if she <i>is</i> eventually the mare in black that could explain it.
...I think that if I didn’t have the physical mandate for sleep, I’d be worse than Blackjack. My brain never stops until it’s forced to, and I only lose consciousness when I’m truly exhausted or I spend hours lying there waiting for my body to give up and turn off. I’ve spent the better part of three days without sleep just because I never got around to it until I collapsed, once spent twelve hours lying alone in a dark, empty room failing to stop being awake... I’d just get crazier and crazier.
Pony hiking boots? Can’t quite wrap my brain around the concept; I’ll just chalk that one up to it being a dream.
Okay, we need fanart of this dream sequence (or at least the early part, since it’ll probably go horribly wrong soon).
...This was far too informative to be a normal dream, but it’s nothing like the ones remembering through the Mare in Black. Gift from the Stars? Somepony or some computer putting data in her brain while she’s not looking? Ghost of Goldenblood, returned to his old house to rest or reminisce? Anyway, with the Cakes missing and her thoughts on killing a foal before sleeping, this is probably where it all goes horribly wrong.
Oh hey, random thought, if gemstones are full of magic, what power lurks within Black Pony Mountain? And where did a chink of obsidian that big come from anyway?
Well, that went well. Oh. Oh dear. This <i>was</i> a memory from the Mare in Black. A few faces swapped is all. It wasn’t Blackjack, it was Psalm who led those refugees there. Might have even been the Cake twins with her; the timing works out. And that incident, the fifty or so dead zebras... that sparked the attack on Littlehorn. Celestia would have reacted just like the pegasus said, been so proud of Psalm and the kids, expected peace... the attack after that would break her spirit and convince her she wasn’t fit to rule, if she could be so mistaken. And from there it all just gets worse by the moment until the end of days.
Hrm. Not a magic on the armor itself then. νυχτερίδ πόνυ looks greek; plug that into google and get... bat ponies. Great.
Ah, so the armor of the Lunar Guard would be modeled after the batponies, who evolved as such independently, probably due to mutagens in the “magic mushrooms.”
Now, if his interest in you is just that you’re pretty and not his sister, that’s an easy fix. Take him with you down to what passes for civilization and show him around. They likely know and aren’t on good terms with the Highlanders, but there’d be plenty in the Hoof who’d be glad to have him. He could join the guard at Flank or Megamart. If more of an adult population gathered at Chapel that’d be great (though I doubt he’d be particularly into Harpica...). Your party is pretty much taken; Glory and BJ are together, Lacunae needs to end up with Stronghoof, Rampage is almost as crazy as Blackjack and several parts of her are straight males or lesbians... Ooh! Set him up with Psychoshy! I see nothing that could go wrong with this plan.
Ooh! The white crystal comes from the moon! So Hoofington starmetal and that of the moon are diametrically opposed... did we ever see the moon in the Hearth’s Warming pageant? Did it even exist before the impact that suppressed the Eater, killed it’s zebras, and birthed the Goddesses? Or was it formed from that same impact?
Motes of light... so when starmetal dies it gives off memories? Or fragments of the souls Eaten. And in the necropolis under Hoofington, there was a lot of starmetal being destroyed? Mass-energy conversion... that was the exhaust of the great engines powering the Hoof. Taking Starmetal of two kinds and destroying both to produce enough power to shield the wall, disintegrate all comers, and light businesses across the valley. But that energy doesn’t come from nowhere, souls are destroyed to produce it. So the Eater needs more to replace what’s lost; It slept for centuries after the Second Impact destroyed Its priests and buried it, and little bits of metal being tapped together in study would be inconsequential, but when they industrialized the process on a scale large enough for the systems of Hoofington it would hurt. It would wake the Eater, and make it hungry. So it devours the city whole, and starts to send out little tendrils of Enervation to feed on the surrounding land, humming its note to convince minions to bring others and make those here disinclined to leave, sewing disharmony as it goes...
Wow. That memory was starlight from the time of the Nightmare; Luna gathering enough of the old Zebra lore and spending enough time around enough humming metal with enough hate in her to fall under its influence. And by forging that armor, she’s stay that way until it was burned off her.
Oh Blackjack, there were so many answers here. Most of them you passed off as dream, and others are only theories that only make sense with context you’ve likely forgotten, but this has been very... informative.
That empty room... why does it hurt so much?
Okay Blackjack, how about you thing about going further when you can kiss them without imagining snapping their neck, ‘k?
Well, that wasn’t horrible. Hopefully Glory will be so understanding.
Damnit Blackjack, what’s happened every other time that you’ve gone into an orb without somepony to watch over you? Sure Styg’s right there, but he’s asleep and likely exhausted. You’re going to wake up on fire, surrounded by robots, and likely under a corpse.
Okay, password is Fluttershy, unfamiliar unicorn stallion. Mare with a long black mane. Wait, unmistakable rasp indicates Goldy, but he’d be familiar right away. Unless it was before his lungs were full of Pink? Or he quaffed a dozen potions before coming here?
Ah, Fluttershy in disguise.
Wait, that’s what he did? Call out his goddess’s name instead of his marefriend’s? *facehoof*
We appear to have confirmation that Goldenblood did not trick Flutters into giving the megaspells to the zebras. And in fact arranged for a great many tragic deaths to try to stop her.
Hrm. Now visions are happening when she gets her head close enough to the perspective of the camera? Did she accidentally get part of her chrome stuck in ‘absorb all available data’ mode or something, causing it to pull records out of any memory chip close enough and lay them over her vision?
Wait, how are the Rangers getting through the shield and why- ah. They’ve joined the Harbingers. Well, the sprite-bots are no longer a concern. Now fly out the back and hope they haven’t flanked you yet.

Re: [GRIMDARK] Fallout Equestria: Project Horizons Discussion
Well, I really like this new chapter. Hope Stygius will join "The party"...or at least won't be killed and could help BJ and crew in future.
I don't think I could come up with track list, like other readers do, sometimes. But. Part, where BJ was dreaming (before zebras and Littlehorn) just triggered this song in my mind (Phoenix Wright Cadenza 04 - Turnabout Sisters' Theme).
I'm no good in writing reviews...honestly, I didn't even write one in my life (well, maybe in grade school, but that doesn't count). But I'll try, when I'll re-read this awesome chapter.

Other thoughts:
I believe we've finally seen Goldenblood when he wasn't acting; there's no way that crying in isolation for three days for a foal that nopony else even knew about was a cold, calculated move. Building from there we can start to see what he's likely been honest about... and I'm not sure how I feel about his actions, or even what they were, but I don't think that I'm capable of hating him anymore.
Stygius... he's a good buck. And he might develop into somepony I like if he's in the story long enough. But so far, while I'm grateful for his role in Blackjack's current semblance of mental stability, I don't like him much. I hope he survives, and it'd be great if he continues to help out into the future, but preferably... from a distance.
Blackjack and Glory and the events of the chapter... I really don't know how Glory will take the news. I see no issue with polyamory and the like, but most people in our culture do, and I get the impression that the Enclave would take a rather dim view of it. And in any case, it should be with the consent of everyone involved; Blackjack really should have talked with Glory about the prospect of future bucks a long time ago, and trying to get permission retroactively rarely goes well. And if Glory sees it as a full-up betrayal (or worse, a sign that she's been inadequate) things will get <i>bad</i>.

Okay, time for... review/commentary/analysis/thing! I believe I shall go with "thing." Yes.
@Ryx
D'aww! Sign me right on up, too! (And I'm sorry that you weren't able to read the chapter yet - thanks so much for working on this for us during your reading hours)
@Sindri
Well, I definitely like your thoughts on starmetal/moonrock mass destruction as power source! And you seem to have the right idea about the Nightmare armor, too... I think most of the other stuff I addressed in the "spoilers" section of my post. Um, I've never been all that good at hating Goldenblood, that's a thing.
- Spoiler:
- RIGHT! Okay, initial thoughts pre-thing: iiiinteresting. Veeery interesting. Mostly, this was a chapter of learning cool things that may be, well, more or less fake. Oh, and setting up drama. Tons of drama. Important-for-the-story-yet-still-making-me-wince-for-the-future drama. With a batpony to boot. Ah, well, at least Blackjack enjoyed herself. Anyway, this chapter started out sort of middling for me (middling for PH, mind you), to be honest (PH: Suddenly, a horny batpony appeared. ME: Sure, why not. Let’s see where this goes.), but kept climbing and getting me more and more immersed. Once the cottage was revealed as Goldenblood’s (yeah, I probably should have seen that coming…), well, that got me right and proper hooked in. And then cool theory stuff happened! And also… sex (how profanely am I allowed to swear here, for the record?).
So… I’m gonna at least temporarily forgo any semblance of tackling this chronologically. I mean, the arc of the chapter basically consisted of five major events, anyway (1. Find a batpony. 2. Find a house. 3. Explore house. 4. “Explore” batpony. 5. Find a Steel Rain.), and most of the stuff I wanna talk about is in Event 3.
But first, let’s talk about Glory and how she’s gonna take Stygius! First off: guess who’s probably got abandonment issues? Glory (recall her mother). Guess who was brought up in what I’m pretty sure was a very pro-single-partner society? Rampage (also, Glory). Yeah, I just don’t see this going well at all. Oddly enough, I can’t really blame Blackjack for it. I mean… what the hell does she know about monogamous (or really any sorts of) relationships, really? No, more than that – the things she knows about relationships are quite different compared to the norm in humanland and in Equestria. Ooh, this is another thing I should’ve seen coming… especially after re-reading the early chapters and watching Blackjack realize that boyponies exist for more than just sex. As relatable as she so often is, you always need to remember that Blackjack is not normal.
Oh, and Boo/Stygius for Most Silent Pairing. Just. Saying. … Wait, that might be terrible. Well, guess we’ll see how much Boo’s intelligence has progressed since being in contact with other non-Blanks in a “zone of harmony” (or whatever those are).
Anyway, I’m still not certain Stygius is sticking around, to be honest. He’s… nice. And Steel Rain does not seem like the sort to return niceness. (Plus, he only shot Blackjack euphemistically. Which is a word! Yes!) I hope he gets to go home, where it’s safe… potentially incestuous, but safe. (I’m going to refer to the batpony cave as “Westeros” from now on =P) But I doubt the poor bastard has ever even seen a Steel Ranger before, and if he goes in headfirst (which he seems to have a tendency to do, so far) he’s apt to catch a missile for his bravery. Although, his luck score does seem to be pretty damn high, so he might manage to pull a Blackjack and nab a win after sustaining just-short-of-lethal damage. I don’t really believe in meta-narrative-gaming’s effectiveness with this story, though. =P (Re-reading this to edit out insanity, and oh man, I am sorry, none of those innuendoes were intentional)
I’m much more pessimistic about Goldenblood’s home’s odds. Which sucks, since the place is currently one of the few hospitable places in the Wasteland (apart from the attack-sprites). It won’t be as gut-wrenching and shocking as when the Enclave leveled Canterlot, but seeing that place become so much kindling will be sad. War never changes, I suppose.
Thinking about Steel Rain’s intentions… well, we know the Seekers aren’t finding it too difficult to track BJ, and Steel Rain wants revenge on her… and the promise of potent technology from the core is also probably a draw. I doubt he’s actually “with them” heart and soul, though, unless he feels they’re a better match for him and his than the Steel Rangers. And even then, I expect he’s playing for his own ends, not theirs – Steel Rain does not strike me as a follower. And he’s played the poisonous, treasonous power behind the throne before – though not with a throne that’s got such awesome resources behind it. If he survives the encounter with Blackjack, I’d bet any treasonous activities on his part will come back to bite him in the flank. (It’s also possible that he doesn’t even know Blackjack is in the cottage, I suppose. Unlikely, true, but possible – he might just be scouting it out in search of her.)
(Ow, coming down from the caffeine with a headache and dizziness… chattiness will probably go down from here on in.) Okay, orbs and camera-recordings. Well, we know a bit more about the Goldenblood/Fluttershy relationship! We know that things got bad, abruptly and intensely. And we know how. And… yeah. Yikes. (Oh, and we know at least part of Psychoshy’s “real” name – Whisper) I guess it’s an almost understandable … crap, how do you say “screw-up” without using a sex-related word? I’m trying to make fewer puns … an almost understandable mistake since she’s, y’know, somepony they swear by and stuff… That’s probably not the explanation for it (too easy), but still. Anyway, still not touching the Goldenshy relationship merits argument – not enough experience on my part to make judgments, and not enough information in the story yet to just finesse and logic my way through.
What else? Well, Goldenblood invited Horse into his home, and was on normal, speaking terms with him. Evidently, they had a falling-out at some point. Trottenheimer makes an appearance, and his wife is mentioned again (wonder what she does? She’s clearly up on all the hush-hush classified gossip! Has this been mentioned already?). Celestia dropped by, and we learned a bit about what she’s been up to – specifically, that she’s apparently up to something. Haven’t reread FOE yet (it’s on my to-read list, after PH and Cider House Rules and Temeraire and A Dark Matter… yeah) … how involved was she in the SPP, again?
Psalm deserves her own paragraph. My, my, how that mare has changed. And she didn’t have magic, from the sound of it…? Though that might have been Blackjack’s mind intermingling with the memory… Hmm. Did she have telekinesis, and could she still be a “deadhorn” if she did? And if she did not have telekinesis, then did she acquire it at some point? And if not… then she’s not the mare in black armor. But that’s unlikely – two different ponies’ memories being shunted into Blackjack? Naaah. So: either Blackjack’s consciousness messed with that detail (unlikely, in my opinion, since other parts of the dialogue were unaltered) or Blackjack herself would’ve been considered a “deadhorn” until recently. (Or there’s something else that I’m missing) Anyway, either way: the line between Psalm’s memories and Blackjack’s self is getting very, very blurry. I’m of the opinion that we should be a bit worried about this, actually, considering how Psalm ended up.
Other important questions, let’s see… Well, why did Goldenblood have cameras throughout his home? Or did someone else install them? And if so, why? Unfortunately, the possibility exists – very slim, but still extant – that everything seen on those cameras was at least in part a display for the benefit of whoever was on the other end of the lens. Like I said – very unlikely, but possible. Hmm. Considering how little Goldenblood liked having his secrets become public, I doubt he was the one to install the cameras… Pinkie might’ve been able to Pinkie-sense something about him, and installed them to keep tabs, but you’d think she’d have gone after him sooner if she had eyes in his house… Who else might have had an inkling of what Goldenblood would become? Luna? Unlikely, but possible – we’ve not seen enough of her to rule her out, but she seems like she needed Goldenblood to become as strong and ruthless as she did. And they were friends. Fluttershy? Perhaps to keep an eye on her patient, and get emergency medical attention to him if necessary? Unlikely due to impracticality. Doesn’t feel like I’m solving this one just yet, ah well.
Next up: why can BJ look through camera lenses, and who or what is directing what she sees? Initial thought – the Dealer (who, incidentally, is a prick for not explaining what a monogamous relationship is). Not sure who else would have access, really – whoever installed the cameras in the first place, if they’re still around, might… and I guess that whatever that ‘bot did to Blackjack (if anything) would’ve given them an “in” to her brain/EFS. Still not sure who that might be, though. Someone with an interest in humaniz- er, equinizing Goldenblood, evidently. So far, most of the clips she’s been shown have portrayed him in a pretty positive light. So… who the hell liked Goldie, and is still alive? … And who had access to Blackjack’s brain (and everything else)? And who is currently living inside a jar, perhaps controlling magical technology from afar through thought and some sort of connective link? Yeah, I think Silver Stripe is a definite possible candidate. Not certain or anything, of course, but it’s a thought. (Another question – why care about the opinion Blackjack has of a dead stallion? Sentiment? He’s not dead yet? Manipulation of some sort?)
And on to geology. Well, the meteorite theory of gemstone production seems sensible – it also suggests that Equestria’s dinosaurs were sentient, what with having souls to soak up and all… wait, do only sentient things have souls in PH? Frick… maybe not, since E-fields kill grass… yeah, makes sense for anything alive to have a “vibro-soul” as it were, I suppose. Otherwise, it wouldn’t make much sense for the rings to have been originally designed as pest control. Never mind about the dinosentience! Incidentally, I’m still thinking about that overgrown spore-monster Vault from New Vegas… Perhaps the intent of the rings was to have them only power up enough to kill off vermin, and then use that energy to power things? Och, it’s difficult to tell what the original intent was, since it clearly ended up going very, very wrong.
More geology: we now have an idea of how to kill starmetal. Note to BJ: do not hit moonrocks with your sword. Bad things will result… ooh, just realized something from our talk about nuclear versus magical radiation! When starmetal is destroyed, it is actual mass destruction! Which suggests that starmetal is actually made of magic, potentially… perhaps even that all matter in the FOEPH universe is magic… frick, it’s all coming back to string theory again, isn’t it? And the last time I tried to learn that, I ended up freaking out about Planck time – never again. Anyway, um… Blackjack needs to send the Core to the moon. Or drop the moon on the Core, I guess, but I feel like Littlepip might have… remarked upon that, y’know? Or just pump it full of liquid moon rock, that’d work too… oh hey, they’ve got that big ol’ drainage system, maybe that’ll work? =P
Let’s see… I think that’s it. Overall, it was a pretty damn cool chapter, especially for theorycraftery. Probably an important one, too, though the actual effects of the events that went down will probably be felt somewhat later. Y’know, for the record, I think I was almost a third of the way through the chapter before I realized why Blackjack was so open to having sex with Stygius. Huh. Anyway, yeah: ‘twas a great read! I do hope to see a return of the rest of the gang sometime in the next few chapters, if only because the whole Blackius (Stygiack?) thing is going to be prodding at my mind until it’s addressed… Thanks for writing this one, Somber, ‘twas worth the wait! :)
[Songs for people that like looking at songs – just the one, ‘cos it’s so damn topical… also because I would not be able to resist putting in “Get Down, Make Love” if I did any more. Because I have zero class when it comes to music choice. Zero class.
-Primordial’s "The Soul Must Sleep": Epic folk/black metal, with no shrieking, squealing or screaming. Lots of build, lots of epic-ness, lots of GET SOME GODDESSDAMNED SLEEP BLACKJACK.]
@Ryx
D'aww! Sign me right on up, too! (And I'm sorry that you weren't able to read the chapter yet - thanks so much for working on this for us during your reading hours)
@Sindri

Ah, so now we know that P21's use of an actual gun rather than a grenade or a similar weapon was a carefully calculated statement to tell Blackjack that he wasn't interested in her, rather than a case of just what he had on hoof at the time.Sindri wrote:Glory used a laser. Perhaps party members use lead and closer companions shoot her with something else?WovenTales wrote:Yes, but will it count? Yeah, it all really comes down to how the Enclave sees it. After all, they did actively support homosexual pairs to reduce foals; maybe polyamory is less of a taboo in the clouds, though it likely still wouldn't be preferred. And while it would have been a much better idea to talk about bucks at some point—I'm thinking one of the few quiet nights in Chapel—I'm not sure she has had too much reason to think they needed the discussion until now (not that she even recognizes the need). First she was still having trouble seeing them as actual sentient beings, then she and Glory were too close for her to think bucks would interest her again, and then 33. What was Glory's reaction to 99's system (both mares and bucks)? Might help predict what she'll do, especially if we find somewhere that Blackjack was explaining it. Could be anything from somewhat betrayed to scary.Blackjack and Glory and the events of the chapter... And if Glory sees it as a full-up betrayal (or worse, a sign that she's been inadequate) things will get <i>bad</i>.

... Shit. Uhm. How to put this...?
This chapter was very good. A lot of thought and effort went into it, and it's very impressive. I'm very happy with the things getting tied up, such as BJ getting over her fear, and the newly introduced Stygius...
...But for the sake of my sanity, I kind of need to rant, so I'll put it behind a spoiler tag... please don't read it unless you want to hear me bitch about shit, I just need to get this off my chest.

- This... This chapter broke my brain.
Let me be more clear. A couple times before has this story broken my brain. In the first couple of chapters, I hated it. I loathed Blackjack and her story, and it gave me a mental breakdown in which I had to stop reading. Then it happened again when I thought Glory had died, in the Filly Flashers building. And once more at the end of 33 or 34, whichever one end with Game Over and I thought that was the end of the story. In all of these circumstances I had to stop reading for a couple of days and cry, for some reason.
I hate to say it, but this chapter did it again. I. Hate. Blackjack.
I don't know exactly why, but the whole BJ/Stygius relationship makes me want to hurt someone. It's the same reason I hated her back in the beginning - Her rational is so... so.... ugh. "I'll just fuck this random guy to a) Prove a point, and b) Because he was nice to me! I live in my own little mental world where I find that just... wrong. And frustrating.
Infact, it's a good chapter, but the first half I was asking BJ to PLEASE not sleep with Stygius, and when it happened I literally screamed in rage. I can't fucking stand her mental state during this chapter, it's so... so.... AGH!
So... yeah. This is entirely on a personal level... it's really a great chapter, but my stupid mental issues caused me to snap again, and I needed to vent...

So here is everyone making their long reviews about a chapter i haven't read yet, but i'm bored so I want to make a huge post of my own :D
I'm gonna post some images that make me think of things related to Fallout: Equestria in general, or PH in particular.
Warning: big pics

- Spoiler:
- Let's start with some pics of what I imagine BJ's sword to look like:
[spoiler]
or maybe this
Then we have her guns
[spoiler] made of awesome!
This is what I magine a megaspell detonation would look like from up close
And then some rainbow sludge
Then of course the Pink Cloud
A random ministry Hub (some city we haven't seen yet?)
(you get a cookie if you know where this is from)
What i imagine the thing/machine/computer/programm in the Core to look like
Inside the Core? (looks very computerish anyway, i imagine a lot of scenery like in the story)
And finally some general Wasteland pictures:
So I hope you enjoyed getting a glimpse of what I see in my head when reading these stories!

Time to stop lurking temporarily. I like to keep up with the comments but I don't contribute much.
Anyway, new chapter time! It'll have to be brief on account of the exam I have tomorrow.
Time for me to slip back under the waves of the internet once more...
Anyway, new chapter time! It'll have to be brief on account of the exam I have tomorrow.
- Spoiler:
- I've been excited about this chapter since I saw the ghost of the name and quote appear on the title page. Still not sure what the quote was about, but I guessed it would be about Blackjack facing her demons and gaining some measure of stability.
I was proved right. It was a great chapter, especially dealing with probably one of the hardest parts of the story to get right- coming to terms with the events on the Seahorse, so little wonder the chapter needed so much tweaking. Blackjack was being kinda self centred with Stygius, but she did need to prove to herself that she wasn't dangerous and the society she was bought up in was rather casual. There will be waves when Glory hears of it for sure. The batpony idea is pretty awesome. I hope Stygius doesn't get splattered in the upcoming fight, he's a good buck, if a little daft.
More history on Goldenblood was good. The way he ended up messing things up with Fluttershy though was a facepalm moment. Invoking you're goddess' name in an intimate situation, when your goddess is real and you work with her is not advised.
On a more serious note that dark muttering about Celestia makes me wonder why Luna flew into a rage. Gardens she'd be mad at, but if he was her only friend her reaction I think would be way over the top. Which means Horizons must have been something truly terrible. From this chapter I think it may have been a weapon to kill Celestia and/or Luna (unless that was what folly was for). Planning to kill one of the regal sisters is treason of the highest order, betraying Luna as much as is possible and probably darkest heresy to boot. I totally wouldn't put Goldenblood planning for an eventuality like that and Luna getting a hold of it.
Time for me to slip back under the waves of the internet once more...

Ugh, I really wish this had posted the first time I sent it...
Anyway, first, thank you everypony for your wonderful feedback. I'm glad that by and large the chapter worked. Getting BJ on the road to recovery for what happened on the Seahorse was something that needed to happen so that other events didn't come out of the blue. It's also continuing her theme with Happyhorn of acknowledging her problems and facing them. Of course Glory will not be nearly so calm about it. But that is BJ's life... staggering from, and causing, one disaster after the next. I'm very sorry it upset some folks. Glory's going to put BJ on a leash after this. Or spay her... one of the two.

right - got the chapter loaded up now so even if my internet dies while reading it, I should be fine.
a little update on my internet you guys might like; the latest advice is:
"Grab a screwdriver and open up your box. plug it in direct."
HAHAHA
but it's working for the moment I suppose, albeit still slowly, so there's that to it.
edit:
unrelated - I just realised I've accidentally stole one of your
characters names without realising (Dusk) for a temporary pony in my
story as their nickname. Ooooops. I hadn't at all realised that.
I would change it right now if it hadn't been for the fact that pony has been around for three chapters. (since at least the 16th of March)
Somber, if you want me to change it I will, but honestly he's a pony who doesn't have any relevance past this coming chapter and I could reveal his true name this chapter anyway... I feel bad now, because it must've been a case of read something about your character, stuck around in my subliminal mind, and came about when I needed a name for a dark blue pony who looks like the beginning of the dusk of a day.
I know its something stupid, I honestly didn't do it intentionally, and like I say, not a major character, not like I called anyone Blackjack/Go fish or something, but yeah.
/feels bad for letting something like that slip in without having realised.

I got that feel as well. I'm still a little upset with what BJ did but I do understand why she did it. It's still not right that she went behind Glory's back and she will have hell to pay once Glory finds out. Lets just hope that Glory doesn't kill Stygius once she finds out because he's a cool dude.
I can totally see Glory putting a leash on BJ and not letting BJ leave her sight. That being said I understand why what happened had to happen. Oh yeah she was pissed, and that was back when Glory just had a crush on Blackjack. Now that they're in a relationship I cannot even fathom how furious Glory is going to be once she finds out what BJ did.

I kinda want Stygius to go away. The party is getting a little big and I like the current members. I guess a couple of you guys wouldn't mind losing Psychoshy but I like her.
Does Psychoshy not appear in the dream sequence because BJ doesn't consider her apart of the group? or because it would have been weird since Goldenblood was in it?

I wouldn't mind if Stygius stayed, but he should probably leave mainly for his own safety. If he survives Steel Rain, then he would have to deal with Glory and to be honest I would be more frightened of Glory then the guy Dragon killer cannons.

Re: [GRIMDARK] Fallout Equestria: Project Horizons Discussion
Overall, an excellent chapter. They do always seem to be better the longer Somber spends on them. I hope Somber still spends at least a week to write each chapter, since he does now have the potential to get them out faster with midweek brushing sessions and all. He should always take his time. We are plenty willing to wait since we know the chapter will be that much better because of it.
Anyways, a couple minor things that didn't make sense in this chapter. First, why didn't Nightmare Moon's armor get destroyed when she was bound to the moon if moonstone destroys starmetal? Second, how come Lionheart can speak the normal pony language while the other batponies cannot? Luna's spell on batpony armor let's them talk loudly, is it assumed that the spell also lets them speak normal pony? Stygius also has batpony armor, so does that mean it's a replica, or a different type than that worn by Luna's royal guards?

Hoo boy...where to begin...?
If you were around the room I was in while I was reading, you would have heard a loud and disappointed/exasperated, "FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCCCK...." when *BUCKETHEAD* arrived.
I'll have my usual review up in a few days HOPEFULLY, but I'm going to take advantage of the forums and post my music tracklist up right now over in the music thread. I'll be throwing in the storyline markers as well, but I'll try to minimize the spoilerness.
Anyways, on to the stuff I missed last night...(this is going to be confusing...I really don't know what I should or shouldn't throw in a spoiler box...)

THAT BOO'S A SPAH!!!!
At least BJ didn't have hallucinogenic dreams. Those. Are. A. Bitch.
And given BJ's state of mind, who knows what would have happened...
I was at work, keeping tabs on this forum post via my phone, when Hinds mentioned the story was up. Couldn't read the story at work (need my music for the usual soundtrack post), was dead-tired when I got back around 2 in the morning, and I completely shut myself off from this topic to avoid spoilers.(Speaking of which, people are clearly taking advantage of the spoiler tags. Good on ya.)
Also, my review post isn't even out yet.
- Spoiler:
It's good to be back in the regular swing of things, now that the latest chapter is out. It wasn't quite the wallop that I was expecting, but a lot of...interesting...things certainly happened...(I chuckle and wonder what Dealer was up to while all of that was going on... ) I hope this doesn't hurt BJ & Glory's relationship...
It's good that Blackjack finally got some sleep, and had a decent dream while at it.
And now we know a bit more about Goldie (and now I feel sympathetic again...goddamnit...).
YAY! More Psalm!
We learned what Psychoshy's original name was supposed to be, had she still been with Goldie & Fluttershy. (I wonder if BJ's going to tell her?)
Is it just me, or were there hints of Somber's "Evil Monologue" there at the part where Goldenblood was talking to Celestia?
Also, Stygius is best Batpony.

Oh, here we go (god your commentary is always hilarious):JeremyRush wrote:*WALLOFTEXT*
Lol."No wonder I’d taxed Happyhorn’s therapy machines to their absolute limit." When a machine that was built to fix minds says that your mind is fucking scary and unfixable, that's pretty bad. I mean, damn girl, you need to take a few chill pills. Or if you don't have those try a chill strip. You put it on your tounge, it dissolves, ya chill. Tia knows everypony in the wasteland could use a couple thousand.
Mega lol."No. Even before that, when I’d pulled that stunt with LittlePip…" To be fair, that was pretty fucking awesome. See, it's different when we are dealing with awesome. Awesome is okay when no one (barring some ghouls and guards) die. And when you get Pip readdicted to mind altering drugs. And end up having a lesbian foursome. It just struck me that this is a very odd story. Technicolor equine foursomes in the middle of a 50s style post appocalyptic magical kingdom. What drugs conceived this?
Seriously, I'm dyin' over here."Big and black, but a rock." Big, black and hard, eh? Hehe, ladies... Why don't we make that foursome a fivesome?
Don't belittle it like that. That was still a really serious moment."The ghoul scavenger in Brimstone’s Fall… Candlewick’s ass grab… was I even safe to be around males?" Yeah, one rape. Granted, it was a fairly traumatic and severe rape but it was only one. Think about P-21. He has been raped. Multiple times. You had it easy. You came back to life! With robo parts!
And the fact that she's dumb as a rock."I had to admit that, if I’d been given a choice, I’d have had my normal limbs back." Christ, this is kind of what pisses me off about most Lyra fics. Bitch wants hands, not magic. Goddamn, magic is fucking awesome. Who needs hands when you can just grab shit with telekinesis. I'd be happy with no spells, too. Pip demostrated the power and flexibility of telekinesis quite well. That blood blade spell is genius! Perhaps it could be modified in certain ways. Could you move around the blood in someones body? If so, it might be possible to hemorrhage part of their brain and kill them instantly. No mare should have that power. Hell knows I'd abuse the shit out of it. Now BJ has the best of both worlds and more. Not only are they super metal hands, but they also regenerate. While her magic isn't back to max power yet, it will be soon. Then she will be unstoppable. Like anything was stopping her now. Except those dirty morals.
For whatever reason, I found the word "buttery" in that sentence to be hilarious."That curdled the buttery feelings churning in my nethers." Mm, more mental imagery. Good thing mind reading hasn't happened yet, otherwise some government agency would get really weird all of a sudden.
And then she can peel off their skins and make funny hats!!!
"Surely I should be hating myself one way or another right now?" Based on your previous mentalities and behaviors, this would be par for the course. But that is booooring. Just start lopping off heads and making a neckalace. No regets. Now that is interesting. Let's see how far down the ladder you can go.
ohgodthementalimagestheyburn"He sighed, grabbed his chalk, and scribbled ‘Twin sister.’" Oh. Unless they are into that. Twins could probably do some freaky shit to eachother.
Honestly, that thought never crossed my mind. Even though she was a soldier and killing was part of her job, Psalm was penitent over all her kills. I never would suspect her to do something on a scale of that. But given the shown relationship between those two now, I guess there's enough loyalty there to leave it as an option. Something like that would explain how that remaining facet of herself in Lacunae was a sobbing mass of regret...Sindri wrote:

So Psalm blamed herself for Littlehorn? There’s gotta be a story behind that. And the mentor-student bond seems to be particularly strong here; if she is eventually the mare in black that could explain it.
I know that feel, man. I know that feel....I think that if I didn’t have the physical mandate for sleep, I’d be worse than Blackjack.
At least BJ didn't have hallucinogenic dreams. Those. Are. A. Bitch.
And given BJ's state of mind, who knows what would have happened...
I see everything that could go wrong with this. She may be a part of the team for right now, but she's still a bitch.Ooh! Set him up with Psychoshy! I see nothing that could go wrong with this plan.
Truer words have not been said.Overlong Analysis Cobalt wrote:Ooh, this is another thing I should’ve seen coming… especially after re-reading the early chapters and watching Blackjack realize that boyponies exist for more than just sex. Yeah, as awesome as it is for "MOAR PARTY MEMBERS", I can't help but get the feel that he, like Bluebelle, is just another temp that will be around BJ for a short time. And then there's the very real possibility of death.
- Spoiler:

To quote Rampage: "Ooooohhh.... Blackjack? Glory is going to KILL you."
And to quote BJ: "Huh? Buh... wha... HUH?"
- Spoiler:
- My, my...BJ is going to have a hell of a time with Glory when she gets back with the group. "Hey there, how's it going? Hey, while I was away, I nearly killed your sister in a psychotic bloodrage and totally banged a really handsome batpony stallion! But, we're cool, right?"
Ah, be patient. It's not over yet.Nightmare Moon wrote:What's this? Only 1 new page after the new chapter?

Trust me, you're not the only one frustrated with BJ (I'm just nowhere near that level of annoyance). And hey, we're all here to post ideas and opinions. Everything's fine as long as you're not a dick about it (and you weren't).ScytoHarmony wrote:@Somber
Nevertheless, ignoring my idiocy, very good job on this chapter Somber!
I can't wait to see what goes down with Steel Rain.
And I wonder what Goldenblood said to Scoots...

Chapter review; as I read it.
My apologies for not having done this in so long Somber. I have nothing to stop me this time so I'll do it right now -hugs tight-
---------
Gonna have to cut the chapter review off early, post another time for the rest of it.
I've read basically the entire thing now, and I'll finish it proper, but my reviewing has stopped as I've grown tired.
I'll go over it tomorrow with a much more objective review - just know its a fucking masterpiece as always and I honestly can't get enough of your work, Somber.
The way you write, the way you make your characters, the things you put them through and give them in return for their deeds - both good and bad.
You are amazing.
Your work is amazing.
Your mind is amazing.
I wish you saw yourself how I see you.

Powerful (and true) first chapter. Humans (and ponies) in such situations often think only of short term benefits or that of the smaller communities, or even themselves, rather than the greater good.
Why should I feel hungry even a little even if it means that group over there die outright of starvation?
Its good that Blackjack finally understands what a mess she is, how she needs sleep and so on.
So nice to have a bath, especially in a naturally occurring (volcanic?) spa.
I'm enjoying the peaceful tone to this at the moment. just what I need.
Poor BJ. I really feel sorry for her with victims guilt over the incident.
All the worse that it perfectly reflects the real deal (and yes, we wont go into that. Once again, sorry.)
Nope, BJ, because you too deserve to feel happy and deserve the simple pleasures of life.
One horrific, traumatic experience which wasn't your fault doesn't mean you can't ever have anything good again.
As for the boing thing - you were crazy. you aren't so crazy now.
the whole styguis thing has me carried away with reading. I'm perplexed and completely cool with it.
I like this buck thus far. also - totally not thinking about BJ getting a rutting... not at all.
-laughs-
...too sexy to be dangerous?
bitch, please. this is Blackjack
This whole mute fight is hilarious and cute.
Boo would fit right in if she had wings.
Silly batpony. BJ is bad for your health!
Something... oh dear lord... what a dirty dirty minded pony.
Protection bubble. Cool.
Glad to see that Blackjack has somewhere safe to sleep tonight... though if she'll be able to sleep anywhere near a buck who wants to rut her brains out, I don't know/think so.
LOLWTFBBQ spritebot defences?!
Well, no surprise that Goldenblood would make sure there's nothing obvious in his place. I mean, why leave all your notes on how you plan to destroy Equestria right in the open? If they were in the open, they'd be found immediately anyway...
The whole goldenblood and Psalm talking about enlisting and such. powerful. I can't stop thinking about the final speech in the great dictator.
(here, if anyone wants to see it: youtube video)
Euuugh. NAUGHTY BATPONY
have some self respect!
Trying to do anything to get into BJ by any means necessary!
Batpony walked out? glad something finally dissuaded him from sticking next to her 24/7
and that long walk to medical? I'm tempted to say her dad, but probably not.
YAY FOR SLEEP!!
AHAHAHAHAHHA
BOO!
Silly boo!
<333
I completely giggled at Boo gnashing on the fossil.
That dream was a tricky one - obviously without a doubt completely brought about by the fact she's in Goldenbloods house.
If you try to tell me otherwise, I'll have to disagree with you and that'll be that.
I mean, I have no problem with the dream - it was very informative and interesting, from the small details of the rock club to the whole refugees thing - but that's exactly it, Blackjack never experienced any of that in a memory orb so it has to be the atmosphere of the house.
Blackjack, even in her sleep, wouldn't be able to come up with such intelligent, educated answers for such things as the meteorite, gemstones being life essence, layers of rock sediment and so on.
Add in the whole zebra refugee part and it doesn't add up UNLESS, like I say, its an outside influence on her brain.
Not that there's a problem with any of this, just a little thing I wanted to make clear on how I view it all.
D'awwwwww, the imagery of the letter he wrote and stuff he drew is cute.
So, she goes from kissing the guy to staring at rocks?
BJ being able to get laid again by stallions, this is good.
Good good good news.
Calling Luna's name in bed... ouch.
and psh, Blackjack you naughty mare! You best hope Glory don't find out!
