Well, in defense of fallout 3 it didn't have ADS and then start you with the Varmint rifle. Never looked back after turning off that option.

Well, in defense of fallout 3 it didn't have ADS and then start you with the Varmint rifle. Never looked back after turning off that option.

ADS? Never played much of NV so I don't recall that option.

Aim down sights. The sights on the varmint rifle are particularly terrible, not entirely sure if this is the case but if I had to guess because of ADS you take more damage in VATS then you did in fallout 3.

Fallout 3- You're a kid of ambiguous gender and ethnicity living in a hole in the ground, when one day your dad leaves and the police attempt to kill you. After much wacky hijinks, you find your pap in a full-body pornography simulator, which he hurriedly changes to look like a virtual world that his fellows are trapped in. After you get him out, you run off to the Jefferson Memorial, the least interesting memorial in DC. While trying to fix the Brita filter there, the government comes and shoots your daddy in his stupid Liam Neeson face. You get mad and murder the fuck out of them, but there are too many to kill alone. You go to the Pentagon Citadel to ask a bunch of racist knights-errant to kill the government with you. They direct you to Hole in the Ground 86, which is full of Frankenstein-looking motherfuckers with miniguns and shit. HITG86 contains a suitcase which itself contains pure, condensed Jesus and will fix everything. After you get it, you get kidnapped by the government. You do something to convince the President to let you go, and the Civil War restarts over the bad guys' aversion to genocide. You go back to the Hexagon and find out that the Knights Templar have repaired Optimus Prime. You all then go and murder the government. Depending on whether you have the right DLC, you either die or get knocked the fuck out. End Main Quest.

New Vegas- You're a fucking mailman who gets shot in the face by a slick-as-fuck Ken doll in order to steal your magic casino chip. You go on a roaring rampage of revenge to Las Vegas in order to cap this fool, during which you probably kick the shit out of every raider, thug and poor person this side of the god damn asteroid belt. You get to Vegas and talk to Walt Disney and Howard Hugh's lovechild, who hires you like G-man from Half-Life, but friendlier. You then are given a choiceon who to give Vegas to. The USA when it was high on that Manifest Destiny, with seven times the bureaucracy and few checks/balances? Or maybe a bunch of racist, sexist, cosplaying slavers who worship an old bald dude? How about Howard Disney, the corporate dictator that every wannabe Marx thinks Bill Gates is? Why not take a third fourth option and grant Vegas and the surrounding areas of vast nothingness a taste of true freedom (or chaos depending on your karma)? After you make this choice, start indoctrinating or eliminating all the local factions of Southern Nevada and a chunk of California. Then, have a climactic-as-fuck battle where you kill every motherfucker what looks at you funny and wear their skins as a stylish-as-fuck leather jacket. End Main Quest.

I don't think it has anything to do with ADS, but in New Vegas they nerfed VATS, so you take more damage.

According to the Fallout wiki:

Changes

• After reaching a Melee Weapons skill of 50, every melee weapon can execute a special attack with varying effects.
  
• At Unarmed level 50, unarmed weapons gain Uppercut and Stomp special attacks, and the Cross special attack at skill level 75. Each have their own special properties but all attacks have an AP cost of 20 regardless of weapon used.
  
• Base melee/unarmed damage (except thrown melee weapons) dealt by the weapon is automatically doubled.
  
• In V.A.T.S. taken damage increased from 10% to 75% making death in V.A.T.S. an always present threat.

Ah. I dunno, I find that a good thing since VATS was always OP as fuck. It took all the fun out of combat when you could just spam the "Head" target and become an unkillable time-stopping death machine.

Could be wrong here but I swore I looked this up and in FNV you take 70% more damage in VATS then otherwise. That wasn't the case in FO3 to the best of my knowledge (If I'm wrong about this correct me) I'm guessing they made that change because you don't need VATS as much if you have ADS. Personally I turned off ADS and didn't use VATS anymore.

I have no idea what the sights have to do with VATS. the weapon entirely disappears from view when VATS is engaged.

I don't know what kind of experience you have with firearms, but--especially concerning the older-style firearms featured prominently in the early portions of the game--the iron sights are accurate and a lot more fun to use than the HUD crosshairs (which, unlike the other aspects of the HUD, do not have the justification of being diegetic to functions of the Pip-Boy and simply should not exist)
