SilentCarto wrote:Nnnno... Eclipse was Princess Luna in disguise. Cognitum is a brain-scan copy of Luna, or more likely, Nightmare Moon. At the demonstration in the passage I quoted, Horse first tried to scan Goldie, and when he avoided it, Horse put the helmet on Eclipse. He was clearly trying to sneak secrets out of their heads, and he got more than he ever bargained for.Evilgidgit wrote:SilentCarto, you're suggesting that Eclipse became Cognitum?
Luna is Eclipse!? Oooooh. Guess I need to read back on those parts.

Eh? Where does it say that Vitiosus was a Legate back then? Or even that he was alive back then?

Oh, yeah. Hehe. There was a scene once where Psalm was lurking outside Eclipse's office after being dismissed, when Celestia made a surprise visit and she heard Eclipse change voices into Luna.Evilgidgit wrote:Luna is Eclipse!? Oooooh. Guess I need to read back on those parts.

In other news, while we haven't finished brushing the chapter yet, the writing is now complete. It's about fifty-two and a half pages long, and so much happens. And the end of the chapter... :D
Also, SilentCarto, I'd really appreciate knowing where you saw that. None of us can remember it being in, and I'd like to get it taken care of.

Re: [GRIMDARK] Fallout Equestria: Project Horizons Discussion
It's never been stated directly, but it's implied so heavily that it could implode a star.Evilgidgit wrote:Luna is Eclipse!? Oooooh. Guess I need to read back on those parts.
The first one was in Ch 49 where Psalm visits "Miss Eclipse".
“I’ve never met this Eclipse. Do they work for the Princess?”
“Something like that,” he replied with a smile...
“Psalm to see Miss Eclipse. Also, she’s here.”
There was a pause as a mare muttered under her breath and then said, “One second. Almost… there…” And then abruptly the voice changed and became deeper. “Send Miss Psalm in.”
I’m sure that your... soul... can be absolved in service to the Princess. I know she’ll forgive you.”
“She… she will?” I sniffed, rubbing my eyes.
“I’m sure of it,” Eclipse said...
“Princess Luna needs you [Eclipse]. She needs to speak with her sister
and wants us present.”
Eclipse actually frowned and rolled her eyes. “Not again. Honestly, why
can’t she simply go stay with Cadance?” Eclipse snorted scornfully, and
my shock must have shown because she immediately coughed and forced
a smile. “Ahem. Sorry to cut this short, but sometimes there’s just no
reasoning with my… with Princess Celestia.”
Eclipse "something like" works for Luna, and is very free with stating what Luna will do in the future. She is obviously disguising at least her voice. Eclipse is "needed" for a meeting between the sisters, and speaks about Celestia with a shocking degree of contemptuous familiarity. But the last bit was the real giveaway; Eclipse almost slipped and said "my sister".
So at that first meeting there were already a lot of people suspicious that Eclipse is not an OIA operative or something but Luna in disguise.
Then in Chapter 55's memory orb:
[Goldenblood] gave a small snort. “Oh please, Eclipse. The princess isn’t going to
need this report.”
“You never know. She might,” the pegasus said with a mysterious little
smirk.
“Espionage on her own subjects. What would Her Majesty think?” Goldenblood said in an almost teasing voice.
“Princess Luna knows nothing about it whatsoever. Princess Luna sits on her throne and makes impressive speeches while the Ministries do all their acts behind her back. Poor Princess Luna,” Eclipse giggled as the world began to blur away.
The banter makes sense if Luna won't need the report because Luna's the one he's talking to right then, and while the last bit could read as cold-hearted cruel laughter, it makes more sense if it's irony. What she's saying there is the fiction she's working to create for those who are in on the secrets and think they're all sneaky, but are in fact being out-sneaked by the Princess herself.

Pardon me for getting on my soapbox...or whatever type of box you stand on to say something, I speak for everyone here when I say thank you to Somber and the PH editing team for creating such a wonderful story. Someone with Somber's writing talent and ability to tell such an amazing story should be a professional author. And special cheers should go to O. Hinds, Bronode, and swicked too, along with Snipehamster, Hidden Fortune (even if they aren't involved any more), and Icy Shake and everyone else for their aid in making the story even better. Well done.

Orion? I thought he was just a Silly Zebra.SilentCarto wrote:Oh, we've been suspecting that for a lot longer. He was a member of the last Caesar's cabinet, remember? Maybe it isn't the maiden that needs breaking. One of the things I hope we get answered in the new chapter is how much of the suicidal tendencies fof the Eternal Warrior from Sekashi's story was to reflect Blackjack's current conflicts with self-dustructiveness and how much of it was an actual need for Viti to... to...SilentCarto wrote: I mean, why would he help to create the Tokomare only to turn around and want to destroy the "cursed city" and break the Maiden of the Stars on its molten ruins?

Ah, no problem. Yes, while Vitiosus may often be referred to in PH as "the Legate" (a title which I do not believe he deserves), Legate is, or at least was, a nonunique military rank.SilentCarto wrote:I was probably mistaken. Itty bitty typo near the start, I think?
"out of way" should maybe be "out of the way" or "out of his way"
Yay, chapter! I'm excited. Text to Speech pegs this one as 3 hours 52 minutes 27 seconds long, so I'll probably be listening to this one for quite a while.

I read it! I read it! Loved it! Oh sweet Celestia! It was...
- Spoiler:
- I got one thing right - Cognitum using Sweetie Bot. So many conspirators!
So now we know what Project Horizons is. A giant space bullet named Tom made from moonstone that will nuke the Tokomare! And Goldenblood is space command!
That's awesome! However, if Horse wasn't in Redoubt, then who locked it up? Though that does explain who was behind Project Partypooper. Cognitum eliminated everyone on the EC-1101 command list via Psalm except Horse since he was already her trophy, and when Garnet said that Luna didn't give the command, she was only half right.
And what happened to Boo? Since she's immortal, I assume she'll come to Blackjack's rescue.
I need to go bed now.

Re: [GRIMDARK] Fallout Equestria: Project Horizons Discussion
Well... another chapter that makes me super excited and yet pissed... especially over the fact that I'll have to wait to find out what happened to Blackjack.
Also, when I get back from my five-day trip, I am posting a list of ways I want Steel Rain to die. It's really amazing how you made me hate him even more with this chapter. Kudos!
But seriously, now he is my second most hated fictional character, righ after Garrosh Hellscream. I want him to die. I want him to suffer. And if Blackjack will stop over his corpse for a moment to feel guilty, I am going to spend every breathing second of my life to create a portal to this story and slap her.
I... think I'm taking it to seriously... I think I'll go to sleep now...
Overall, awesome chapter. Here, this properly desrcibes how I feel right now:
Two, four, six, eight!
Name a story that's really great!
One, two, three, four!
Keeps you coming back for more!
Two, seven, nine, three!
The story that we all wanna read!
Four, three, two, one!
Somber's Project Horizons, that's the one!
Well, not exactly what I feel, I suppose. Would need a few lines about maiming a certain clad in a power armor tailhole... okay, I stop now.
I would love to write more about what I think about this chapter, but I really need get some sleep now. See you in a few days!

...I am way beyond my ability to even right now.
Apart from the various song playing around, this one was stuck in my head for most of the story. Fits kind of well, though.
- Spoiler:
- Suffice to say, though, I'm glad things did not go as...horribly...as it seemed they were about to.
Totally called the Deus Ex Discord, though. For whatever good it did.
Also:
This made me genuinely smile. I liked this bit.“Are you thinking what I’m thinking?” Discord asked softly with a grin.
“Yeah, but I need to talk to Cognitum first. Find out what she knows about Horizons. Then we can blow this place up,” I replied as I loaded up on magazines of twelve millimeter rounds.
“Well, that’s hardly what I was thinking,” Discord replied, indignantly. “I was thinking that marmalade would go wonderfully on pizza.”
I laughed quietly. “That does sound good, actually. We should have that when we get done down here.”
Discord stared at me, skeptically, but then nudged my shoulder with a hoof. “Deal.”
Apart from the various song playing around, this one was stuck in my head for most of the story. Fits kind of well, though.
- Spoiler:
- Also, evil piano music at villain time.

Not reading comments yet.
Hinds: "From the left came a colossal crash, and I gave the striped mare a nod. She returned it, and together we raced towards the red bar on my EFS."
To my recollection, EFS still doesn't work in the core because of the vast numbers of red bars. Did that get cleared up or something?

Hm, perhaps it's simply clearer in the big empty warehouse area than it is outside? There ought to be periods there, though, so I've put the bit on my list for that.FeatherDust wrote:Not reading comments yet.

Re: [GRIMDARK] Fallout Equestria: Project Horizons Discussion
- too much awesome:
- "Once upon a time, I’d been a security mare in a diseased stable teetering on the edge of systemic collapse, bloody revolution, or both."
And then everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked.
"Times like this really highlighted for me how surreal my life really was at this point."
Perspective. Right now you're a tiny spec on the thin layer between the empieness of space and a ginormous ball of molten rock and metal. You're on the surface of a planet that's flying around a supifyingly-huge orb of nuclear fire. At the same time, your body is made of trillions of tiny little living pieces, all of which have the same copy of your unique DNA, the ultra-complicated molecular code for the machinery of life. (Every person is a little universe.) And on the microscopic life scale, individual human cells aren't so tiny either. The thing about perspective is, everything I just said would be /completely/ meaningless without your imagination. Never sell your ability to read fictional characters in strange situations short: it's the same tool that lets /us/ understand the cosmos and lets _you_ understand yourself.
"“Why do you protect him? He’s Discord, the greatest enemy in Equestrian history!”"
Oh? Not so confident in your fighting abilities right now?
"With a speed and force I barely registered, he struck me right where my heart should have been. The blow was so sharp that, for an instant, it felt as though I’d been impaled. A small part of me noted how sad it was that I knew that sensation. I staggered back, feeling a throbbing pain in my head, as though all the blood I had left had been squeezed into my skull."
Reading that made me feel that. It doesn't seem like that passage should be so visceral but it was. I just had to really pause there. Wow.
"“I learned the weaknesses and gaps in the Achu fighting style long ago,” he said smugly as he approached us.
Then two blood-smeared, red-striped hooves appeared around his neck from behind as Rampage sprang on his back. “How about some good old fashioned Equestrian Commando fighting techniques, then?!”"
You write the best fight scenes. That was the awesomness of Fist of the North Star in a few sentences, but the really impossible part is how it's much less rediculous. That seriously shouldn't be possible, yet it's right there.
"Every second Rampage swapped from the thundering Achu blows to the sharp commando throat and joint strikes to the boxing body blows. The random mix kept the Legate’s back to the wall, but he didn’t stop moving his head long enough for a clear shot."
I'd want to see Rampage fight Deadpool, but Deapool would win simply because the Marvel universe is at least 1,000X stupider than PH's is. Also, someone's gonna complain by now about how bla bla bla, but all creative work is derivative. PH is so awesome that lesser works spontaneously form in the past to reflect and expand upon tiny slivers of PH's glory.
"A zebra phoenix talisman… the zebras had stolen project Chimera and project Steelpony. Why not Eternity, too?"
Or just A zebra, or a small group...
"She blinked. “Imma here Bwackjack,” she said, her eyes suddenly pale before giving me a nuzzle. “Imma sowwie I didn’t tell. He say it was a secret.” Her ears flopped in worry."
Anyone say this is fake and I'll punch you. With words. It may seem possible but it's too cruel.
"“I matured,” I replied. “I had to sooner or later.”"
:(
"Instead of Equestria being a folksy land with a few cities and lovely pastoral countryside, there was a consumer culture with a rampant thirst for coal."
If only we could blame the cold war on bad economics...
"“Time travel? Please. Entertaining as that may be, when has that /ever/ worked?"
*Squee*
"“Well, one occupational hazard of omniscience is knowing when not to say things,”"
Eh... I like omniscience better when it's just a really strange and powerful way to aquire information, not when it's a default win on every knowledge check and an easy way to know secrets.
"“Boo is unique. Precious. An individual. Why, she’s growing her own soul and everything."
Yes! Yes yes yes yes!
"And she’s as immortal as I am."
Bwah? Uh oh. Princess Boo confirmed. (*Squee*)
"Anyway, to answer your question, I don’t know."
:P
...It's almost 9:00 right now. I'm skipping Cosmos for Project Horizons. The new episode will also be up on Monday, but still.
"You’ve done good and sown disorder, but you haven’t gotten the spark that links them in your head yet."
Discord's saying all the right things, but if he switched places with Celestia he'd probably be just as guilty of too much chaos for chaos' sake as Celestia was of order for order's sake. Also, he's forgetting that his reformation with Fluttershy, as 'the script' (the stars) would have it, would have involved him learning friendship. He should try friendship with Blackjack some time.
Also, forshadowing is noted. *Wink*
"“Huh.” She shook her hoof like she had a cramp, then lifted it to her ear. “I guess my drama needs new batteries.”"
*Snaps fingers*
"Then I spotted it. It lay within the shelter of a MWT crate laying on its side. Maybe it was a trick of the light or the stress, but I imagined a beam of golden radiance illuminating it. Without hesitation, I launched myself at the crate, snatching it up with a cackle of glee. An IF-84 Stampede riot shotgun. In a flash, I tore the translucent wrapping paper off, took in the sharp scent of lubricant, and popped out the drum. I selected the ammo with my PipBuck organizer and loaded the gun with red-banded shells. With a distinctly manic grin on my face, I murmured. “I shall name you Boomstick.”"
You need a luck stat of 10 to get that weapon. (According to Word of Somber, BJ started with a luck of 9 and gained the tenth with the full set of ministry mare statues.) Also, you need to be willing to dive into the depths of a place that makes hell look like a vacation. Blackjack is best pony.
...five bucks says she destroys Boomstick before the end of the chapter!
"I could kill them. If I could kill them, I could win. And if I could, I would."
And she did. :D
"Enemies I could fight with no moral complications. Opponents who were clear threats to me and my baby, which I could dispatch guilt-free. It didn’t matter where I was. This was the moment where, for several manic, magical seconds, I was alive from horn to hoof, metal or not. This was joy. This was sex. This was life!"
So last week or two, not sure, I started playing Deus Ex: Human Revolution. I was completely absorbed. I marathoned straight through that game because it was just that good. The game lets you choose between attacking enemeis head on and doing stealth, and a choice between lethal and non-lethal. I couldn't play the game as anything but complete pacifist and stealth. I would sometimes 'take a break' and go full on lethal attack, but I never saved those times. The gunplay in that game is excellent, and so is the stealth. It was way more than just getting that pacifist achievment though. The game sucked me in so much that I couldn't really bring myself to do lethal much at all. As much as I enjoyed that game, it was a relief to go to TF2 and just blow cartoons again.
"The train shuddered under my hooves, and I looked behind me at the far wall. The scorpion-crab thingy had finally reached my level. Suddenly my super awesome shotgun seemed woefully inadequate. "
Boss stage!!!!
"Twins"
Hee.
"“Bwackjack!” I’m sure, a few months ago, I would have been adorably bowled over. Instead, she clanged loudly against my armor plate and sank into a heap. “Owww…” she whined, rubbing her head."
Cute? Cute. All the cute.
"“Nah. Couldn’t be. Personally, I think there’s something in the water. Fluoridation. Look it up.”
Silly? Silly. All the silly.
"“I mean, yay. Go team horribly idealistic. Hoofbump!”"
Yay! /]
"Suddenly, I found myself hugged by the yellow-and-red-eyed, snaggletoothed mare. “You’re a bit less cushy than Fluttershy, but you’ll do,” she said with a smile. “Just don’t forget to write when this is all over. I simply won’t stand for a Sparkle not writing me. It’s terribly rude.”
“Uh… yeah. Sure,” I said with a baffled look. What was all that about?"
Discord's gonna die, leaving Boo and Blackjack alive. Tick tock goes the clock.
"“You could have given up EC-1101 at any time. Returned it to ponies more deserving."
More deserving? You're not Sweetie Bot, you're an abomination. Go jump in a hole... oh, wait. Find a deeper hole.
...Reading on further, there isn't a hole deep enough.
"Then Glory appeared, winged and beautiful, in a lab doing something involving beakers. “She can return to seeking solutions to the problems facing ponykind. And I know that you two would greatly appreciate the opportunity to grow close again.”"
*Snerk* Shows you what she knows. Love knows no bounds!
Skeleton Snips is cool.
"I frowned at that last part. Back to an old one?"
What, reincarnation? No... Gah, I'll figure it out later.
Oh, she's been talking to Echo too. Well. Rampage is desperate enough (to be rid of the cacophany that's smothering her) to look past the beyond-evil corruption of this monstrosity, but Echo?
"Hint: The name he likes so much.’"
Discord!?!
...fudge, that's even better!
"As my view moved further out, I got a wonderful view of Canterlot being destroyed; apparently Cogs had made this before the Enclave wiped it off the map. Spike’s cave crumbled to nothing, and I felt a pang of trepidation. Perhaps LittlePip shouldn’t have put that in her memoirs."
Logic error. If this was made before Canterlot was destroyed, how would Cognitium learn of Spike's cave through LittlePip's memoirs? Even worse, Spike's cave is supposed to be kept a secret untill Gardens of Equestria is activated.
Well, that's much more plausible than launching the Tokomare into the moon. A planet-killing bullet.
"“Trottenheimer’s firing trajectory is unaccommodating for interception,”"
...oh fuck me sideways, Folly is Goldenblood's backup plan. The backup plan to the 'destroy the planet' plan. Project Horizons fires, and Folly intercepts it and destroys it.
Also, btw, the way Horse's plan works is that when Moonstone is prevented from destroying Starmetal, the Starmetal does what it does best and eats it.
...oh, almost forgot this. Scenery Porn count: All the porn.
"“I’m not letting the world die. You underestimate my friends. Glory and P-21 will learn what has happened to me. They will contact others. LittlePip. Homage. Calamity. Grace. Others that respect the cause I work towards. They will find a way to stop Horizons, with or without EC-1101. Then they will end you,” I answered, the truth so clear and simple to me that even here, like this, I felt a great sense of peace. “It’s not about you, Cognitum.”"
Finally, BJ breaks her by talking.
...damnit, she's good enough at holograms that all of this is probably fake. I hope.
"As is, I have to fend off a thousand countermands just to get the one thousand and first command through,”"
She's not alone in the system. Something's resiting her.
...damnit Blackjack.
------
I'm at the part where the Legate is kissing Whatever Her Name Is Now's hoof. I still can't think of a comment since everything went up to eleventy thousand.
Too much awesome. At one point I just couldn't comment anymore it was so everything. Thanks you for another chapter, and thank you again for the story itself.

Re: [GRIMDARK] Fallout Equestria: Project Horizons Discussion
You know, Somber was worried that this chapter wouldn't be well-received? :)
For the second, though, hm. Checking…
Ah, no problem, I think. Whether or not LittlePip left out Gardens of Equestria (I didn't find anything saying that she did, but I also didn't find anything saying that she didn't), Spike's cave, if not in the Book of LittlePip, would be an obvious hole: mention of the Battle of Dragon Mountain, and the fact that it was over a very important secret, was included in the two-weeks-later radio address.
For the first, there's a simple explanation: she made it a while ago and updated it but liked the Canterlot-blowing-up animation she made so much that she kept it in.Derpmind wrote:Logic error. I'm enjoying it thus far, but still haven't finished. 3:04:51 / 3:52:27. Off of the top of my head, there's at least three things that press my fun buttons in particular.

Emotionally nerve-wracking, but great.
