There's two answers to this: On the more... mechanical side, it's the first episode of a cartoon and you can't spend that much time setting up -- we're just introduced to Twilight, here's a few personality traits, and off we go.My big problem with the Nightmare Moon incident is this: why was Twilight apparently only then being pushed in the friendship direction? Is there any indication, including in flashbacks or discussions of the past, that Celestia was trying to help her embody what is presumably the most pertinent form of magic to bearing the Element: the magic of friendship? That is to say, was Celestia trying to help her be some one other than a sarcastic loner bitter to be called away from her library before the start of FIM? And if so, why did her efforts fail to take hold in a quick learner who is literally obsessed with pleasing the Princess?
But from an in-universe perspective it's not crazy either; for somebody who is "obsessed with pleasing the Princess", Twilight is remarkably resistant to the whole idea of friends. She pooh-poohs that idea as soon as Celestia's letter arrives, and once in Ponyville, she not only avoids making any effort to make friends -- she actively resists the entire concept. She reacts with fear and dismay at the idea of somebody wanting to be friends, and it takes a series of literally life-threatening situations to break her out of that.
And this isn't a new thing since she became Celestia's student; according to Twilight's song, When I was just a filly, I found it rather silly...
I imagine Celestia's been trying to get through to her for a good while, and she's just been very stubborn about the whole thing.
Do terrorists call up the FBI to let them know that something is going down? Or does somebody else call the FBI with a bomb threat that JUST HAPPENS to be in the same place and time as the actual terrorist plot?one has to wonder how Chrysalis was as successful as she was: it's almost like she was trying to fail, unless the threat to Canterlot was made by someone else, and the ponies were just lucky (but in that case, who made the threat, why, and why did they never show up?)
You're assuming that "a threat" means somebody delivered a letter to Celestia saying, "I will be attacking your city soon, just letting you know." I'd say it's likely intelligence work and/or prophecy (we know prophecy exists in the FiM universe) gave them a warning. They certainly seemed unaware of the nature of the threat, apart from the fact that it was from non-ponies -- that is to say: If Celestia had known changelings were the threat, she probably would have taken Twilight's accusations that "She's evil!" more seriously, since she'd know that impostors were an active possibility.
I think you're misreading. She did originally intend Twilight to be the one to recover the Crystal Heart. She just decided that in the context of the situation, Twilight did something that displayed her worth much more than simply succeeding according to orders. She proceeds to instruct Twilight to do the exact opposite of what she actually wants from her
I would say both of these answer are the same -- from a storytelling standpoint and an in-universe standpoint, it's contrary to the philosophy of the world that anyone, even Discord, is irredeemably evil by his very nature."Keep Calm and Flutter On." Why does this episode even exist‽ Leaving aside the inanity of it working, massively undermining the character—the very nature!—of Discord as he had been portrayed in the past, on what cost/benefit analysis does freeing him make sense?
I disagree that it's against his nature, anyway -- chaos is not inherently evil. Being driven by whimsy and impulse doesn't mean you have to be a gigantic dick to everyone you meet.
Well, I can't answer to the "just leave" thing -- I have no idea what the plan was if he decided to teleport to Alaska. Maybe because it was the Elements that released him, he's on parole with a mystical ankle bracelet, and if they want to they can re-stone him at any time, from any distance. Anyway, like I say, I don't have an answer to that. How does having the Elements nearby work as a fail-safe against him? He can just leave, he can physically separate them, for pity's sake, there are probably infinite ways he can escape (besides the stuff he was doing in the episode).
I don't think he can remove the Elements while they're being worn, though. He stole them out of a box, but I don't recall him or anyone else ever removing the Elements once they were held by their rightful owners. It may not be possible to remove an Element without the bearer's permission.
That does seem like poor planning, but maybe she felt her presence would be a problem more than a benefit? It's pretty clear at that point that she's actively grooming Twilight for princessdom, so that could have something to do with it too.she flies off to a foreign nation! Why couldn't this have waited until she got back?
Because it's painful to see even something as dangerous as Discord frozen in stone? Maybe because Luna's return shows that even the most evil creature Equestria has ever known could be turned back to the light? She probably hadn't even thought about Discord in centuries before he busted out, and after that he had to stay in stone long enough to make a point (sat him in the corner) but then she wanted to show mercy. And that ignores the fact that if she wanted to consider releasing Discord, the time that would make the most sense was before season two! If she had a mind to "reform" him, whatever that's supposed to mean in the context described as a spirit of chaos, why did she do it after he escaped and wreaked havoc on the land rather than before?
We don't know that the princess knew what the spell did or what it was intended to do. WE don't know what it was intended to do.Throw in the end of season three, where the whole "conflict" of the first half is basically the result of the Princess not telling Twilight what the spell is supposed to do (by the way, that's a nice way of circumventing Twilight's autonomy and right to consent to changes made to her body (and possibly mind, spirit, and soul)!).
As to the "circumventing her autonomy", you're assuming Celestia caused those changes to happen. She didn't. She just went to the ... astral plane, or whatever, to greet Twilight upon her ascension. The changes happened because of Twilight's actions, not Celestia's. You may as well complain that it's circumventing your autonomy when your hair turns gray or you lose a tooth.
That's why I think NOBODY knew what it was supposed to do. It was a mess of a spell that didn't make sense. A magical mystery, just like the episode's title says!As Twilight says, the spell doesn't make any sense; maybe giving her some context regarding what it was supposed to do and so forth would have helped.
I see where you're coming from; I just think most of these issues come from the fact that, being honest, Twilight is the main character and Celestia is a parental figure, and you want Twilight to be the one who accomplishes things, not see her going through the motions after Celestia tells her every last detail.

Well, there is a possible explanation for some of this if you are willing to rely on a certain theory (and more of this if you rely on another).FeatherDust wrote:Icy Shake wrote:

- Response to the Rant, and after this I'll go to discussion if I need to say more.:
- mostly wild mass guessing:
- In regards to Twilight's grooming, there were probably pushes towards having more social ties... but gentle pushes, ones that wouldn't lead to Twilight stonewalling Celestia or growing to think of her as a well-meaning but naive sentimental. Being direct has its moments, but it can also destroy opportunities in delicate social situations.
As for Keep Calm... ug... Well, they liked Discord and John DeLancie sure seemed interested in the whole pony thing too. Any in-universe explanations for that might just amount to excuses depending on why exactly she needed him unstoned. But if you accept the second theory above, it would at least justify some of Celestia's hesitation around him. He's supposedly a dear friend. She probably doesn't even want to be around him after what happened. She'd probably fly back and forth between, "He's lost forever," and, "I'm sure they can save him." (Though I know this won't happen in the show, wouldn't it be just so dang bittersweet if she expected them to somehow magic her friend back into sanity, but only managed to convince his mangled persona to play nice? She would have left, hoping that by the time she returned so would Starswirl. Instead she gets... this. Her friend is still effectively gone, and so are the secrets to the very important spell he could have used to help Twilight!)
Accepting any of this also opens up the possibility that Celestia didn't take Twilight as a protege to stop incoming threats (though that's a handy benefit) but rather to prevent the rise of another magical behemoth sociopath.
All this is just wild guessing, but the reason why Discord didn't just pop out is simple enough: evil villains play to win. Laughing villains play to play. What's the fun in it if he can't even pretend that he's giving people a sporting chance?
I have had an idea.WavemasterRyx wrote:"

Re: [GRIMDARK] Fallout Equestria: Project Horizons Discussion
Okay so my internet is back and read the chapter while I was trying to get it back up. I am going to be completely and totally honest with what I thought of the chapter.
What I expected:
What I got instead:
How this chapter made me feel:
Was this chapter any good?
Let me start this by saying I do not like alicorns. The only alicorn I like is Luna. I do not like Celestia, I do not like Cadance, I do not like Twilight Sparkle. I do not like green eggs and ham sam I am. In fact when the FoE mod for Fallout 3 comes out I was planning on exterminating alicorns with extreme prejudice EXTERMINATE! EXTERMINATE! EXTERMINATE! and then I got to this chapter and went
Lacunae's "death" was very meaningful and did serve a purpose. The thing that pissed me off in the original FoE was that Steelhoove's death was a token death and that his death seemed pointless and no other purpose than to fill a quota. Lacunae's death for the longest time had good build up and we knew someone was going to eventually die for keeps. Lacunae disobeyed the "goddess" to save her friend and risked her life to save her longest and closest friend and died a honourable death in the name of her "family" and friends. Sure there were parts that were cheesy, but that didn't take away from the chapter in any regard. She may not have been my favourite main character, but even I have to admit her character was well done and how Somber wrapped up her story was really well done. I don't think there is any way that this chapter could have been made better. Even with my bias against alicorns I still have hand it to Somber.
Now if you excuse me I have to go eat my hat.

Granted, unless Hasbro actually does something with batpoines all this is unofficial stuff.
Still, I would mind it if this became official canon.

Considering Luna is their most popular princess and how the batponies are so popular I would not be surprised if we see something like this in season 4 or something to make it canon.Moodyman90 wrote:Ahahahahaha!

Re: [GRIMDARK] Fallout Equestria: Project Horizons Discussion
I have a problem. Sorta.
I've been presented with an statement. I want to find a couter to it, but that would require me to re-read multiple chapters, which I sicnerely don't have time for right now (and by the time I do, the argument will get stale).
The statement is about how, presumably, Glory has little to no reaction to Blackjack almost killing her sister, having a much stronger reaction to the thing with Stygius and the almost-killing being basically forgotten afterwards.
How should I answer this?

"The haunted look on Glory’s face had her staring past me a moment. She focused once more, but her voice still trembled. 'But Dusk is okay? You didn’t kill her, right?' ... I tried to touch her, but she smacked my hoof away and curled up even tighter." Glory's reaction to hearing that Blackjack injured Dusk, alongside a variety of other terrible confessions culminating in Boing. In context, her response made sense, I think.

While I like the ones Equestria Prevails has designed it took them a while with the sour taste the one that appears in PH left.
