I expect that people who have a more visual experience of reading might end up either needing to humanize or having to more intensely create a mental image and whatnot of the characters.
BTW with regards to German institutions, it's actually sort of a myth that nobody knew what was going on in the death camps. And the Einsatzgruppen - death squads - recruited and received volunteers from the Wehrmacht for mass killings. There's also this.

Really? I find it hard to try and humanize some things, like the pegasi and whatnot. It could be that I've seen the show a little to much when my siblings decide to rewatch episodes on Netflix.
And yes, I'd be in the camp that visualizes these things. Now if only I could transcribe imagination right into video... as long I don't get distracted. XD

@Cobalt the Allies' list of war crimes is just about as long. WWII was more Black and Grey than Black and White
I often visualize Pegasi as winged humanoids. As for why, I just sort of have a very active imagination.

@Mister Frost (war crimes)
Oh aye; white phosphorous bombings by the British, sanctioned mass rape by the Russians, concentration camps in the US, nuclear warfare. But the Allies did seem to mostly avoid human experimentation, mass shootings of civilians (not sure about Russia, actually - let's be honest, the Soviets weren't great with human rights), and the like; or at least weren't caught doing it (which is of debatable merit, but at least suggests that abuses weren't as widespread and systemic), and weren't economically dependent on them.

*Nitpick* The internment camps were not concentration camps.

Same concept, just without the mass killings and starvation.Mister Frost wrote:*Nitpick* The internment camps were not concentration camps.

I would say the mass killings and starvation were the main feature of the camps, so the distinction is a pretty big one.

I'd personally call the most frightening part the fact that everyone in them were dragged from their homes, family, friends, jobs, and forced to live in the camps with no option to say no; basically having their humanity taken away.Mister Frost wrote:I would say the mass killings and starvation were the main feature of the camps, so the distinction is a pretty big one.

Re: [Official!] Project Horizons Comment Crew Chat thread.
Apologies; I did not mean that they were Nazi-style death camps, meant as a camp to concentrate populations of political or ethnic minorities. The USA's during WWII were vastly, vastly better places to live in than the Nazi ones, for obvious reasons; though Camo is right that they were still pretty reprehensible.

Well yes. They where an atrocity in their own right, but they weren't quite the crime against humanity that the Death Camps were.

Oh not even close, and please don't think I was trying to say that. I'm just not a fan of the 'brightening' of US history, and have a tendency to try explaining how it actually was as opposed to common belief.Mister Frost wrote:Well yes. Canada had the Japanese-descended Canadians placed in similar camps. While definitely better than Soviet- or Nazi-controlled camps, they weren't very hospitable.

History in general isn't exactly a family-friendly thing. Atrocities have been committed by both "good guys" and "bad guys" throughout history, and lots of the "good guys" throughout history were worse than the "bad" (in the Greco-Persian war, the Persian empire was a lot more tolerant and enlightened than the rather backwards Greeks) but that's more or less the whole point of living: work together with our fellow man so we can Do Better

I'd like to single out the firebombing of Dresden as probably a worse war crime than the nuclear bombings in Japan. Note also that Allied officials as high as Churchill on at least one occasion acknowledged Allied (and by extension Axis) bombings as acts of terrorism.
The allies didn't entirely avoid human experimentation, but as far as I know it was mostly done on their own people, making it probably a more general crime against humanity than a war crime in particular.
The Soviets didn't always avoid getting caught in mass shootings, but they did deny it (in this instance, at least) for fifty years.

I watched a short documentary on the Japanese atomic bombings, and some survivors were experimented on by the US Navy in captivity.Icy Shake wrote:

I read the article on the Katyn incident a few days ago.

@swicked
Yup, I just meant that you probably (well... maybe, anyway!) need to put in a bit more effort to visualize ponies doing things than humans doing things, at least if they're not being heavily described (like, if the writing just says "I picked up the jar of cider and poured us each a slug," that might be harder to visualize than if the mouth-grip is specifically talked about). But maybe not! Once you've read enough ponystories, it could become easier; or you might just be really good at visualizations; or I might be going about this whole mental imagery thing completely wrong!

the fire bombing of dresden was not really something that hurt the germans so much as it hurt all of humanity and culture, there was much scientific knowledge and art that was lost.

Nearly every war contains horrible crimes against humanity and history is written by the winners who tend to gloss over the horrible things they did while putting spot lights and magnifying glasses on that of the losers.
