Re: [Official!] Project Horizons Comment Crew Chat thread.
I read The Hobbit swiftly a few months ago. I'll put parts I noticed were missing/rearranged/added in this here spoiler.
- Spoiler:
- The encounter with giant spiders in which the dwarves are saved by Bilbo never happens. The spiders make a small appearance in a scene with the brown wizard, who essentially replaced the shape-shifting Beorn in the novel. The Necromancer features briefly, and the encounter with the Elves in their settlement went much better in the film, with no barrel rides downstream being involved. Gandalf was also present at that point, which I believe he was absent for in the novel. The dwarves don't wear colored hoods like they do in the novel. The rock giants were fighting, but not in the distance like the novel. They were right on top of the dwarves.

- Spoiler:
- I think Beorn and the spiders don't happen until they're in/around Mirkwood, or something... I know the spiders don't. And there's still an encounter with the woodland elves and Thranduil to be had, IIRC - isn't that the one in which they escape in barrels? Anyway, the sequel lists Mikael Persbrandt as Beorn, so that's getting addressed. Note: working off half-formed memories, Wikipedia, and the animated movie here, so... yeah, may not be accurate.

- Hrrm, yes you could be quite right in that the barrel encounter occurs later. Though the Elven settlement seen in the film wasn't in the novel to my knowledge. I don't seem to remember when the spiders and the starvation in the forest occurred.
There were a lot of scenes added nonetheless. Brown wizard gets only a passing mention in the book.

- Spoiler:
- The elven settlement in the film was Rivendell -the whole map-reading sequence was in the book, at least in part. I think I read that they're going to actually film all that stuff that happened with the Necromancer off-screen in the book, which might be why they decided to characterize Radagast so much - to avoid having to do an introduction for the dude when all the wizards go to wreck Dol Guldur.
Here's what Wikipedia has to say about the subject:
"In T.A. 2845, Thráin II, King of Durin's folk, the last bearer of one of the seven Rings of Power given to the Dwarves, was captured by Sauron's forces and was kept at Dol Guldur, where he yielded his ring to Sauron under torture.[17][18] Gandalf went again to Dol Guldur in T.A. 2850 to investigate his suspicions of the power that was rising, learned that this was indeed Sauron, and found Thráin in the dungeons close to death.[17] Thráin had forgotten his own name, but gave Gandalf a map and key to the Lonely Mountain for Thráin's son, Thorin Oakenshield.[19] Again anticipating the Wise, Sauron left Dol Guldur for Mordor in T.A. 2941.[20] Ten years later, when Sauron declared himself openly in Mordor, he sent three nazgûl back to reoccupy Dol Guldur.[21] Khamûl (one of the three) commanded the fortress in Sauron's absence.[22] In March of T.A. 3018, scouts from Dol Guldur became aware that Gollum had been brought to Mirkwood and was being held prisoner by Thranduil.[23] On 20 June T.A. 3018, orcs from Dol Guldur attacked the Elves who had imprisoned Gollum; in the chaos, Gollum escaped and disappeared.
In March, T.A. 3019, during the final days of the War of the Ring, Dol Guldur sent forces against Lothlórien and Thranduil's realm in what came to be known as the Battles of Lothlórien and Mirkwood: three attacks on Lórien (March 11, 15, and 22) and one, "The Battle under the Trees", against Thranduil (March 15). All were fiercely fought, but the power of Galadriel and the strength of the Elves proved too great for Dol Guldur to overcome. After the defeat of Sauron on March 25, Celeborn marched on Dol Guldur and overthrew it. Galadriel then destroyed the fortress so that the forest was free from the shadow of the tower. (These battles are all described in Appendix B of The Lord of the Rings, under the entries for the dates involved, and after the entry for March 25.)"
So it looks like things have already diverged more than a bit from the books.
Also, reading the entry on Sauron in Wikipedia... holy crap there are so many parallels with Project Horizons and FOE. Sauron in the Second Age is very similar to what we've seen of Dawn, and Red Eye, too, I shit you not. Order and industry through violence and destruction, initial good aims destroyed by the constant struggle for power becoming its own end, losing the ability to veil oneself as a normal and fair being... Parallels or not, it's an interesting read.

I just got back from Christmas shopping for myself and my nieces. The only things I really accomplished were finding out the prices of laptops at Walmart and Best Buy, and realizing just how much I fucking hate people.

It's probably not exactly the same line (ah, definitions), but for me it's almost opposite—I dislike almost all music that's on the radio today, but am actually fond of stuff (even in similar styles) that's put out by less mainstream artists, mainly on YouTube. I do know what you're talking about with the repulsion, though; it's in the other direction and not quite as strong, but I have a similar reaction.Overlong Analysis Cobalt wrote:Boys and girls, I should note - I know at least two ladies who are quite into ponies that way.Caoimhe wrote:You boys are all very gross and weird.
Anyway, let's not yuck one another's yums, as they say. I'm sure we've all got stuff we do that others would find weird and/or gross as an initial reaction; for example, more than thirty seconds of indie music has a tendency to give me a severe metaphorical bile buildup. Not sure why. It just feels physically repellent to me.
EDIT: I also don't like British weather reports in the middle of live BBC coverage of news incidents. >:|
And (since several other people seem to have been listing this) my relationship with R34 is rather interesting. I don't like the artwork and most of the fics, but, if I'm honest with myself, the latter is more due to widespread poor quality, and I don't mind the ones written with
Which is kind of funny, because I didn't like the entire genre until I got into this fandom (and am still not overly excited about it in any other). If I can find good stories, it's now one of my favorite things to read (shipping, not clop). Seems like a good place for one of those "Confound these ponies!" if that's not too antiquated already (I'm out of the loop on meme popularity).

@ Hinds, RE rotodynes :
But then, if they have better performances than helicopters and are supposed to be easier to maintain, why didn't the militaries worldwide use them instead of helicopters ? What's the catch ?
Also, for flavor, if you want to use something else than helicopters and considering how the last heirs to the Caesar dub themselves ("The Remnants"), I'd go with using a re-engineered, attack version of this :
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V-22_Osprey
It goes even faster than rotodynes and has a longer range, and can be even more polyvalent in term of the kind of combat mission you could assign it (put anti-aircraft weaponries on it ?).

According to Wiki the project was cancelled because of politics and a lack of orders. Sometimes a failed project isn't because it was a bad design (not that I'm implying that one of you said it was). Think of the Pancor Jackhammer.

high maintenance and prone to crashes manufactured in Amarillo Texas...
oops did something wrong there
its faster than a chopper, and it looks like they are assigning it a marine one mission... thats pretty cool

Ach, I don't even know what's on the radio these days. By "indie" I meant less "independent record label" (because Southern Lord FTW!), and more, well... like this, for instance, I guess. Just... not a fan, at all. Organ's good, but something about it - might be the vocals - just doesn't sit right. Anyway, I have a long and boring history with music; suffice it to say that I like lots of classic rock, lots of progressive rock, lots of electronic stuff, lots of minimalist stuff, and lots and lots of metal (but definitely not all). I get excited when I can identify a song I know on the radio, but that's rare.WovenTales wrote:It's probably not exactly the same line (ah, definitions), but for me it's almost opposite—I dislike almost all music that's on the radio today, but am actually fond of stuff (even in similar styles) that's put out by less mainstream artists, mainly on YouTube. Still doesn't mean I like clop. Much more fond of shipping, as long as it's well-written and -paced. Even if it heavily uses R34 (though that does tend to need to be an even higher quality). As I said, interesting.

Also, and this is absolutely just my opinion, memes are the best when they're so old that nobody remembers or uses them anymore, because then there's nostalgia. :)

If you mean the Turkey/NATO thing (give me some credit here for trying to understand), basically the Netherlands and Germany are moving I think 800 troops and some anti-air/missile units into Turkey in case Syria tries to launch missiles at the country.Admiral Stoic Rum wrote:

Better to be weird than normal I say. It's more fun.
Also I found a Maverick 88 over at Walmart for $200 USD. Guess what I'm getting for my birthday? ...After I get some money.
Before I forget, I'm on the fence about getting a laptop or a tablet. I need a mobile workstation that will do a lot so the laptop is the clear choice, but the tablets look so neat, especially the Samsung Galaxy and the Ipad4. Am I missing something important by not getting the tablet?

@ Rum, RE V-22 crashes :
I've had a conversation in the past about that with someone who tends to know his shit over that kind of subjects, and he told me that they've got that sorted out for a while now.
Yeah, tilt-rotors are hard to get right, that's true. But oh boy are they awesome when you DO get them right.
Though thinking about it I'm not sure a tilt-rotor design would be really adapted to the mission-profile an attack helicopter tend to cover (tank-hunter ; close-air support => need for very high maneuverability after moments of staying idle in stationary flight).
Maybe you could conceive some kind of abomination combining the advantages of both ?
Though at that point you could probably buy 5 attack helicopter with roughly the same range of performance apart for the speed and range thingy, for the price of only one of these abominations.
Anyway, Tilt-rotor design are more adapted as transports dedicated to beach-head operations, and generally any operations where you want to go far away, under the radars, as quickly as possible, drop your shit as close as what you want to hit, and scram off as quickly as you went there.
Basically, commando operations deep behind enemy lines.
