Re: [GRIMDARK] Fallout Equestria: Project Horizons Discussion
Yeah, a mix of physical sharpness and taint-induced magic is probably the cause.
My point was that in my opinion, as far as cutting alicorn shields go, the balance between incredible sharpness (incredible as in I can't believe it) and some kind of freaky taint-magic, I'm more ready to believe the cause is taint-magic.

You know, Featherdust's theory that Horizons would create a new Nightmare Moon seems more likely than ev-- OH FUCK I think I just figured out BJ's final form. But if Luna was deposed or killed… why blow everything up? Some sort of vengeance? It couldn’t have worked as a deterrent because nopony knew about it.

Well, I finally read the chapter last night. My god, it's so relieving to have all of that action going on again. And all the twists and turns and reveals...well done, Somber.
I'm with the idea that Dawn is really dead - that's just a construct of some sort taking her place. Also, that was freaky when it did the skin-ripping thing. I hope Sky survives.

Yeah, I envisioned something similar, but a lot closer to the Mammoth Tank from the Command & Conquer series. An amalgamation of all of them really, my mind can't settle on one design. But it doesn't matter which one, really, because let's face it, that thing is frightening. (and my god, do I love it. )Ironmonger wrote:How I imagine Deus. Snipehamster said the same thing. There was also some imagery of Fluffy Deus.

I imagine Deus as the "interwar dream" tank.
It'd be large, not really efficient [everyone knows that a dual-barrled turret on a tank is a bad design choice, right?], but with lots of gunz pointing it all directions. Something like an Independent, but bigger and with more turrets, some of them with dual guns (including the main one).

Pretty much what I've been thinking, too. I'm not sure what would happen if the star took power, all I know is it would really, really not end well. Lavos is a good analogy for this.Harmony Ltd. wrote:
Well, when I heard there was a Fallen Star in Hoofington sucking the life out of the area, and which would eat the life of the whole planet if it could,
and knowing that it turned a benevolent Princess into a monster fascinated by its own power,
I thought more of Lavos.

Also, there's the whole "scream" thing going on.
Man, Lavos' scream is fucking blood-chilling, even coming from a 16-bit sound system like the SNES' one.

I never played Chrono Trigger on the SNES, only on NDS. But my god...that scream...the last thing you hear after the entire world is roasted and ravaged to bits...that's still very, very unnerving...
Bad end, man...

Heh, I just remembered...back in the days when I had just joined the PHCC community right before ch33, when I was still posting soundtracks for the chapters, I had "Ruined World" playing for the scene where BJ's mind was going through the bad-end scenario, where The Core rose, Glory mutated, Scotch got turned into a baby-maker, P-21 ruled and yada yada yada, and everything went horribly wrong.
It just fit.
It just fit.

Yeah, it fits.
Also, I too didn't play it on the SNES but on the NDS.

Re: [GRIMDARK] Fallout Equestria: Project Horizons Discussion
Good question.
I can't recall anything specific, but it would work best in a "past" situation, like a memory or during one of the memory orbs. Given the setting of the song in the first place, possibly during some Ministry discussion or major company discussion.
This was also on my list of stuff to play, should the group ever venture above the clouds again.

@ Camo : Good play on word. Does it fit with the atmosphere of that passage, though ? I don't remember.

That kinda works, too. Also, for any interim silent period where BJ was wandering around there with Boo.CamoBadger wrote:

@ Robo : in the Chat thread, I suggested that this tune may be appropriate to the scenes of festivities from the previous chapter. It's at the same time happy and sad. Bittersweet.

I don't know. But that's the scene I thought of when I heard that song. Probably because the tunnels were very well maintained by the robots to the point that they were in the same condition as before the war, kinda a piece of the past.Harmony Ltd. wrote:Good play on word. Also, like Robo said, her walking around with Boo in the tunnels.

Considering the final fate of Schala in that game, this may be totally appropriate.

On another note, during the part of Ch52 where BJ went to talk with Dawn, it mentioned that it was raining, and she was listening to Octavia.

Okay! Chapters. In. Review. For 52 – “Reunions”
edit- spoilers!
- Spoiler:
- I have… an hour to do this before next class. So, yeah, let’s get this started. Commenting on things I remember, overall impressions, things like that.
-First off: well, the ages of speculation seem to be officially at an end – Blackjack is from Twilight’s line, and she knows it, and she knows that everyone else knows it. And I really liked how this was handled. No fanfare, or HP Lovecraft style italicized dun dun dun reveal. No, this has been a possibility that most readers had grasped for a while, so treating it like a sudden revelation of utmost significance and world-shattering potentials would have been silly, especially since Blackjack herself had been suspicious. Instead, you focused on how she felt unhappy that it had been kept from her and nonetheless understood that it had been for the best, and that was a good move. It nicely wrapped up that part of the story (for now, at least) – the “when, if ever, do you lie to your friends?” questions.
Hmm, what else? Well, I’d actually been hoping Dawn being so, well, weird, was a coincidence – not in terms of “the story would be better this way!” but in terms of “man, it’s gonna suck for Glory if her mum’s not quite on.” But, she’s the next big bad, and she’s shaping up to be a pretty damn cool one. That molting scene, for one… some scenes are so goddamn cool that my brain automatically puts them in slow motion, and that was one. Very Cronenberg-y. Incidentally, I’m pretty sure Dawn wasn’t dead or anything after venturing into the Core – the “no more weakness” line suggests that, up until the transformation, she really was in control. Influenced, maybe, but ultimately she was both present and at the helm. Now, though, I think that’s a bit less certain. She might be wholly gone, she might be subsumed but still present on some level, and she might even be back in control eventually. Or have just never relinquished it, and the physical transformation was just her actively deciding to give up the remnants of her old life. In any case, it was a damn cool scene. (Notably, the Glory family reunion seems to have gone poorly; also, recent events surrounding Glory + the song “My Wife” by The Who = hilarious)
(Class happens, yet I have more to say…)
Okay, what else… Tank battle! Well, I must admit that I DID get the reference – or at least I’m pretty sure I did, Ghost in the Shell, right? – but since my memory of the film/show/I don’t even remember which is exceptionally hazy, I didn’t mind that specific part. Honestly, I rather enjoyed it. Maybe it wasn’t the best single battle of PH’s history – couldn’t really say what is, maybe the fight with Steel Rain on the boat with the holyflippityfuckdidthatjusthappenohnoohjeezohbad moment – but I thought it was a fitting sendoff for that tank. And I always thought that tank was cool, y’know? When it appeared, you knew that things were bad, ‘cos the Harbingers had brought enough of their logistics to bear that the tank appeared. Yikes. So… yeah. I didn’t have problems with the tank fight.
Cyberdaemon gets a name! Cognitum. It’s a jerkface, I’m just saying. One is driven to wonder whether it is aware of the hideous power within the Core, and is somehow aligned with the EoS; it is possible that Cognitum’s motives are basically just what Dawn outlined, technically. If it is playing her, however, which is certainly likely, then we still need to suss out what its ultimate objectives are. Which might be kinda hard, since it might not actually be all that equine/human/whatever. Crap, I forget whether or not there’s any consensus on whether or not the cyberdaemon was originally a pony, and who it would be if it is. Anyway, point is, it could be that Cognitum wants to usher in the rule of the EoS, or it might be that it just wants out of its effective prison. Or maybe it just wants to make ponies better by implanting them with kill switches. We’ll see.
Glory! Yes, Somber, you are right that Glory’s gonna need some TLC after all this. No matter what happens to her dad, she’s gonna be in a very bad way. If he dies, of course, well, that just makes it worse. But yeah. The aftermath of this huge battle is gonna be a good one, I think. Plenty of victory celebration, I expect, but also a lot of mourning and planning. Ooh, the planning… can’t wait for that planning.
In terms of character development and the like, I feel as though this one mostly worked off stuff that had been started in the last chapter – which is nice, because seeing that sort of emotional stuff take more than a single chapter to wrap up is always nice. Well, not literally always, but you know what I mean. It’s a good thing. But yeah, Blackjack acknowledging that she wasn’t making good decisions back at Tenpony – that her antics may have been fun, but were self-destructive and caused hell for her friends – was nice to see. That’s another cool thing PH does: there are always repercussions to things that I don’t quite see coming, probably because, in most stories, they wouldn’t be remarked upon.
Anyway, guess that’s it! I really liked this chapter; it set the stage for whatever comes next brilliantly, and I can’t wait to see where the story goes. And man, talk about that villain reveal…
edit- spoilers!

I just remembered that Somber mentioned something related to intelligent tanks called "Bolos", IIRC, that could develop human attributes and even personalities and relationships. That is quite similar to Deus' current form, eh?
