I've seen Gilda, Trixie, Chrysalis and even Discord be redeemed or looked at as heroes. One character I've not seen treated as such is BlueBlood. I have my own theory, however.

He's not actually a jackass as we saw in Best Night Ever. He is actually a bro dude who spends his spare time polishing up his swordsmanship, chilling with the Royal Guards, and assisting his aunts in governmental duties. However, he's sick of being treated as part of some podunk town mare's vapid fantasy, and as such enjoys screwing with whatever mare that Celestia sets him up with

This story. It's inspired by Groundhog Day, and it's very well done IMO. It also addresses your observations perfectly, if I recall it correctly.

@Zombie movies
Oh HO! I can do this! The Horde - french zombie movie. It's as goddamn french as you damn well please, filled with existential angst, casual racism, morally bankrupt characters, and extra-badass action sequences. Seriously. The characters go out of they way to beat zombies to death. Often. There is no "save one bullet for yourself" when they go down: it's "shoot every single bullet and then a few more because to hell with realism, and then start chopping away with your machete, and when you lose that it's time for punching." Good? Meh, pas vraiment. Mais c'est super cool!

If you want more of a traditional zombie horror film rather than an action flick, I've heard REC was great; can't say I've seen it, sadly, but I've only heard good things. I'm assuming you've seen the classics and the more highly-regarded modern day stuff (28 Days Later, the original Night of the Living Dead and its better sequels)... The Walking Dead TV show is good, of course, but it's not a film.

If you want humor, look no further than the Evil Dead franchise (including Army of Darkness) and Brain Dead. The latter is Peter Jackson's work, incidentally. Dunno if you'll have seen either; the former seems to have gone down in popularity, while the former has gained notoriety ever since the internet remembered that it's both a great film and has the most fake blood use of any film ever (AFAIK).

Now, for YouTube stuff, well, I'm actually not very familiar with any zombie films on the internet circuit. Can't really say why; might be that the success of Slenderman has inspired more supernatural stalker/slasher/shakycam stuff. Might also be that fake blood is expensive in the quantities you want for a good zombie film (not that you need gore for a good zombie movie, really, but a stark, philosophical/emotional look at a zombie apocalypse is probably beyond most amateur filmmakers and amateur actors, y'know?). Sorry!

@Swicked: While I am really sure it doesn't count, I did write a fic with Trixie containing blackmailing and noncon. Not sure, but seems like it could contain things you'd see as "funny". But overall? No, can't say I've seen one. Mainly just seen really bad and ooc clopfics with her, or well, overall there's a ton of those in general. But can't think of one that goes like you described... really sure I've read a fic like that a while back though when I read a wide range of fics overall though... might have been shipping though... and no idea if it was one of those you described, but it had some Trixie+Fluttershy if I recall. And I am just trailing off.

As for Lil'Pip, I didn't mind her much except that she was too good as well. Even when she did something bad, it was the right thing to do, so she never actually did anything truly bad to anyone. By the time I was at the end of the story, any moral choice that came up I just thought "she's going to do the good-guy thing even if it's stupid, but it will still work out for her".

She had her failures. Not euthanizing that energy lance slaver in Shattered Hoof, using the incendiary gun as has been mentioned. To me, her biggest one by far was her refusing to become an alicorn. Red Eye was handing superpowers to her on a silver platter that she could use to save lives in the battle around her and further her own plan to save Equestria, not to mention that he was also handing her leadership of Fillydelphia. But no, she had to essentially kill Red Eye and forge ahead as her own unicorn self, reducing her odds of getting into the SPP and leaving Fillydelphia to get fought over by warlords. Her reason? People don't need to be led to be good. ... Really? Really, Littlepip? After all you've seen, you don't think that even just a sizable fraction of the Wasteland needs some leadership to live decently?

I've seen it done a couple times. A Teacher with No Class, and as has been said The Best Night Ever, which is excellent and has an even more excellent sequel, This Platinum Crown.

Wow, I completely forgot about that. Considering she is the de facto leader at the end, this is fairly hypocritical of her. Of course, that doesn't make for a good story.

Given the criticism I see about FoE it seems that, despite writing a wonderful story and giving us a sandbox, Kkat screwed up a lot.

FoE was a challenge. It was a crossover fanfic and it was really fucking long. Nothing's perfect and at it's core it's merely fanfiction, but damn good fanfiction. It had the responsibility of building an entire universe out of two concepts, which it's a pretty big feat.

I think where it suffers is KKat's insistence on developing the protagonist like a video game, but video games where the player's choices influence everything (especially in open ended games) don't always mesh well. Also there was a greater need for including tons of characters, winks to source material, etc.

Also, the serial format kind of hurt it as well. Outside influence will always be taken into consideration no matter how much you try to ignore it.

A lot of stuff could be improved, but as a set piece for future recursive fanfiction (thanks to whoever taught me that phrase), it's great. It's a testament to the power of fanworks and MLP as a whole.

I'm pretty much repeating what Kkat did (world building) but no matter how much I or any other author tries it won't be perfect. Lightening The Load portrays Chrysalis as a well-intentioned but conflicted ruler

The Stars, The Seal, and The Kraken portrays Trixie as a down-on-her-luck performer that essentially got heckled at a free, no-obligation show and then shamed for failing to fight off a minor star god-beast

Speaking of rewriting things to improve them, has anyone reread Past Sins? I've heard it's been rewritten a few times, particularly to update it after season 2 ended. I'm not really one to reread stuff but it was the first fanfic I'd ever read so... I dunno. I might do it this once if it's different enough.

Hell, I never read it once. My solution to situations like "this may be a doom-harbinger-death-god" is "shoot first and let God sort 'em out", and I have little interest in those "emotional" stories.
