Sure. Brass cases are, after all, a very efficient way to cool off a gun's chamber.

And they're reloadable, near-impervious to elements, and highly unlikely to cook off the rest of the rounds like the caseless ammo they've tested tends to do

Caseless is an elegant and complicated solution to a problem that is only one if you are an army that's adept at expeditionary warfare with recurring logistical problems and you need your soldiers to carry shitload of ammunitions.

Problem is, you rarely want an elegant, complicated solution. You usually want simplest, most straightforward solution to minimize the chance of fucking it all up.

You also have to consider the fact that with caseless ammo, all of the corrosive gasses and debris go back into the action, reducing the firearm's lifespan and requiring that the firearm be cleaned more often to insure it doesn't gum up.
Also, on the subject of a gun designed from the ground up using space-age materials, Here's a list of real life examples: AR-15, M-16, P-90, SA-80, any other firearm design which incorporates aluminum and plastic.

Interesting Idea, but not sure how I feel about that. I mean it's cool and all but if you're out of network range, then the guided part of rifle becomes useless. Which is what you're paying for. As well if you have to use tracking app on an Ipad. Still it's kinda cool.Ironmonger wrote:What.

Well, you know, if the software needs to be online and authorized to be used, this mean it would be relatively easy for the authorities to stop someone from having access to the "smart" part of the gun by revoking his / her license.
I'd say that's not a negative thing in itself. At least it would help the authorities fight against that "criminals with very good snipers" fear.

Yeah, that is a good point for the gun I just don't know how I feel about digital scopes and stuff. The fact that hunters use it is odd to me, then again if you're hunting you should at least be somewhat challenged instead using a satellite guided bullet to hit game you are hunting

Some part of me says that a criminal organization that could afford a $22,000 rifle could afford to hire a trained ex-military sniper or something

Yea, I don't think someone that can afford that thing qualifies as a 'two-bit criminal' anymore.

Re: Gun/Military Thread
I think a trained military sniper would cost far much to a criminal organization than your random, run of the mill thug - the guys going to ask for his share, y'know ?
Unless said sniper was working for you not for personal gain but because you did him an offer he couldn't refuse.
But then again, if I've learned anything from Hollywood, it's that trying to coerce that kind of guy against his will to do your bidding has heavy chances of more or less literally blowing up in your face.
Bottom line : if your can just hand that kind of baby into the hand of your average street-ganger, that's a lot less headache for you from a logistical standpoint.

Except for the fact that it costs twenty-two thousand dollars. Ex-military guys turning private, even criminal, however, is depressingly common

As for the price of the gun... $22,000 is the price of a good car.
When you do $10,000 a week by selling meth, offering yourself one of these things isn't much of a stretch on your budget.

Buying a gun is trivial.
Finding an ex-military and recruiting him / her isn't.
That's all I'm saying.

On another note, I want to get another Mauser. Guns that you can use as spears or baseball bats are starting to grow on me.

I know what you mean, I need to get a higher front sight post. Apparently the lowest setting was zeroed for 300 meters, even though it's marked 100 meters. Still incredibly precise after all these years, I was outshooting a modern scoped .270 hunting rifle.

Re: Gun/Military Thread
Time for responses to quotes that made me laugh/confused/other.Ironmonger wrote:What.
"If this type of technology is transferred into semi automatic and automatic weapons, it would make it even more lethal."
US Military has already had this kind of technology for years.
"This technology potentially enables any two bit criminal to operate with the skills of a highly trained sniper"
With a price tag of 22 grand? If you have that kind of spending money you sure as hell aren't a 2 bit criminal.
"This is an industry hell bent on making weapons more lethal and taking no measures to extend safety"
He said a password can be set on the gun's scope software. This doesn't render the rifle useless, but it does lock any unauthorized users out of the precision technology.
He said the target accuracy of most police is three out of ten.
"To think that private citizens that are not trained could shoot better than 3 out of 10, it's scary"
If this is what he doesn't want the rifle beating, then my shooting must be some kind of nightmare for this guy. Seriously, beating 3/10 is not exactly impressive or scary to me considering I've got an average of 9/10 with just iron sights.
Also, "smart gun"? No. It's the scope that does all the 'smart', it just happens to come packaged in a way that seems to be integrated with the rifle.
But, overall this is another case of some really nice tech being released to civilians and some people think that anybody can just get it by waking up in the morning and then they'll all go kill someone with it.

When I was at Ft. Sill last summer we were picking those old things out of the bins of newer magazines and tossing them aside for use with blanks. Side note, fuck blanks.

I was making a joke, but I guess people outside Colorado wouldn't get it.
Basically the politician responsible for presenting the new magazine ban here was asked during an interview 'how are you going to enforce the law since there's no way to know if someone owned a banned magazine before or after the law passes?'
She replied that magazines can only be used once, so after gun owners shoot the bullets that are in them they have to throw them away, so soon nobody will have magazines and the law will be a success.
So:
-She doesn't know how guns work and apparently thinks that ammo only comes pre-loaded in magazines.
-Her entire plan seems to be that she thought banning magazines would make it so guns can never be shot by anyone in CO except police/military. So yeah, basically an attempted ban on guns; too bad she's retarded.
