I've fired at water bottles, golf balls, and the like with my dad or my dad's parents on about four different occasions, and that's the extent of my gun use. I don't want a gun since it would limit my combat options to inflicting severe pain on, wounding, and/or killing my opponent. I might get a taser, though.

I really wanted to rhyme "Tell 'em" and "parabellum" in my previous post but I couldn't figure a good way. Bleh.

80s band Shriekback rhymed "nemesis" with "parthenogenesis" which is pretty damn clever.

Nemesis sounds cool. Parthenogenesis is a really long word.

Rhyming is hard when your words are specific, but with meter and attention, the results are terrific. Not that one, though, that was not the best. When it comes to basic rhyme schemes, I don't pass the test. At all. C'est mal; but nonetheless I hear the call from time to time to grab a rhyme and make English my thrall.

Okay, never again. Anyway, I don't own a gun; can't where I'm at right now, and don't need one back home. If I do ever get one, I'd probably want something small, with a very short effective range or whatever (if I miss, I don't want to kill someone), and easy to use. I HAVE carried a knife - proper self-defense one, not a kitchen knife - one time while escorting a friend around, but that's it. Nothing's ever happened to me, mind you. Closest I ever came to being assaulted was a schizophrenic homeless person trying to give me a hat that he was convinced was mine. /shrug It was sort of sweet, really. I have very little in the way of defensive training... I was a biter as a toddler, if that helps! =P

I get messed with on the subway all the time because I'm a sweet thang. Usually I get creeps starting with "What are you reading/listening to?" and it turns into some creeper bullshit from there. Never been held up/mugged before but I've mastered groin kick retaliations for when "Please don't touch me" doesn't work.

Pro tip: Smoking 100s out of a stiletto cigarette holder on your balcony with a glass of brandy is some dapper flapper shit. Highly recommended if you possess a vagina.

Veering off-topic (whatever the topic is), I'm looking for a one-shot fic challenge to help reignite my creativity. If anyone has any ideas, throw 'em, please.

Attempt to write the worst FoE fanfic ever: Have your protagonist meet as many FoE protagonists as possible and bed them, trying to break canon in various ways. Also attempt to write a terribly implausible explanation for Rainbow Dash. Conclude the story in a way so your protagonist trumps Littlepip's conclusion, perhaps having a coda to Fluttershy's book.

It'd be fun. :P

@Cao As funny as that would be... I'm not even done reading FoE, and it's against my policy to write stupid.

@Rum That's plausible enough, but the prompt is rather broad. I'll think about it.

Write a story in universe about a separated or broken up couple. Use first person for both and switch the perspective around as they go about their days and cross or almost cross paths. Be vague about the reasons for the separation.

This was an idea I was thinking of but I'm so busy I don't think I'll have the time to start it. :(

You're not wrong; I think in fact you may be underselling your case. Brandy works for everyone, and the holder can be a fine accessory for the swingin' gentleman as well.

That said, it might be harder to pull off than just using a cigar, but in the end would probably depend on what you're wearing. I think an evening jacket, even in black but especially in white with black pants, would better compliment the holder (as would, I think, full white tie, if you had a reason or excuse for it--partly because I just don't see white gloves meshing with a cigar at all), while a smoking jacket or business wear would probably fit better with the cigar. At a guess I'd likely say that the narrower your frame the better you could pull off the holder as opposed to the cigar.

Were I to try pulling something like this off, I'd probably drop the brandy for a gin drink served in a cocktail glass (wow, surprise there, right?) and go for the holder. Honestly, this sort of thing is pretty much the only reason, apart from the related issue that I often don't know just what to do with my hands, I have any regret whatsoever that I'm a nonsmoker.

Anyone else have thoughts on consumables as accessories?

I'm up for sad, but not romance. I do first person well, though, I've been told. I don't believe it to be a necessary component of good storycraft, and outright don't read stories that are all about that and little else, however hypocritical that might make me on occasion. Although, the quality of my own stories shows about how far that gets me. I have never known love, and writers take penalties to quality when writing about things they know naught about, as is my understanding. If I did, I'd certainly try. A good sad/romance fic has appeal to many.

Hrmm, writing prompt... Well, since nobody's ever read Bad Ronald (which is a SHAME because that book is a cynical masterpiece), I suppose a crossover with it is right out... Okay, how about a story of a day in the life of the old pony who keeps the Ponyville clocktower up and running? Or, if slice of life is not appealing, detail his experience of the day of Princess Luna's return.

The most recent Steam sale had the price of each NV DLC at somewhere between $2.50 and $3.00. If you're patient it'll eventually go on sale again.

One-shot prompt: Your One True Pair of ponies are on their first date.

Crazy idea that no-one will every write and probably couldn't if they wanted to: All the Mane 6 falling in love with each other, (each one is in love with the other five,) and it's totally believable and romantic. Somehow.

There's also other stories, from times before. Started right from the age of 14.
But yeah, that was indeed after the time I went through four bags before double bagging it and somehow eating my way out while unconscious.

I do not, I repeat, do not have any preferred pairings; I dislike pretty much all of them. You name it, I dislike it. Oh, and the latter... Impossible, due to certain variables that simply do not line up to equate romantic relations between any of the six. I'd give all my props to anyone who could do that with it making complete sense (without using an ass-pull like a potion accident). Seriously though, romance is the one thing I will not write; it doesn't fit my style, skillset, or life experience.

I am neither of those things. I don't have any objection to guns, and in fact strongly support the right to keep and bear arms, I just don't feel like I need one myself (in most situations I think I'm better off with words, bare hands, concealed knives, and a high pain tolerance), I don't have the time to learn to use one properly, and I don't want the extra expense for something I'd use so rarely if at all.

Heh... I tried learning karate as a kid, but quit because my sensei had a heart attack and quit teaching, and the only other places within a reasonable distance were stupid little mcdojos that didn't actually teach anything useful. When I need to fight I tend to use a lot of improvisation, good reflexes, and the aforementioned pain tolerance.

I've actually been on the receiving end of attempted mugging twice. The first used a knife and refused to listen to anything I had to say about my lack of valuables or the foolishness of his course of action; it was very painful and I gained a few new scars before carrying him to the hospital and spending several unpleasant hours talking to the authorities, but he really had no idea how to fight. The second was a scared hungry teen with a gun he looked about to drop; ten minutes of conversation later he'd given me the gun, I bought him dinner, and then I used some of my contacts in the area to get him an honest job and passed the weapon I "found" to the police (evidently it hadn't been used in anything terrible beforehand because I didn't hear from them again about it). I don't think either of those (or any of the other fights that I probably shouldn't have gotten myself involved in) would have been improved by carrying a firearm; I think the first was too drugged or overconfident to have run and while it might have saved me some blood I felt better carrying an unconscious guy than a corpse (and the legal fallout would have been much worse on me), and in the second I can't think of any way it could have made things better and many ways it could go much worse.

But there are a lot of people who don't fight as well as me, and there are a lot of criminals who fight a whole lot better. Guns are a great way to level the playing field between the guy who's spent months working out in prison and years fighting on the streets and the guy who sits in an office all day on accounting problems, and I support their availability here, even if I doubt I'll ever get one.

Kipper is freaking huge, kinda crazy, nigh-suicidal overconfidence, and does not appear to feel pain. I believe it.

Have you considered a tazer? Highly unlikely to deal permanent damage, the range is limited by the cable length on the darts, and most are just lightweight, point-and-click devices. Buying one might be a problem depeding on where you live, but they aren't hard to build if you're good with electronics and small, high tension mechanical stuff...

I've considered making one myself, but I'd probably never bother to carry it. Knives are useful for a lot of purposes, but even a half pound of encumbrance for something that only has one purpose and would get used, like 1-3 times ever seems like a waste.

Classy.

The unwritten adventures of Carrion, Xanthe, Silver Spoon, Snails, and the Stealth Suit? You'd have to somehow manage to sync up with their return to Somber's story...

The thing is, a realistic romance progresses slowly. And most of the parts in the middle are only interesting to those directly involved. So every story with a romance in it is either unrealistically rushed, slow and boring, or has enough other things going on in the meantime that it's no longer considered to be about the relationship. I've seen a lot of beautiful romances in the background or on the side of stories, but I've never seen one that was the sole focus without being terrible.
