I'm actually not sure what happens if you make the other choice, but it did seem pretty important to the main quest.

Sooo, watched a couple episodes of that Hist'ry Channel show about the Vikings. It's okay, for a sub-par Norse-themed Game of Thrones coattail-rider. Plays a bit fast and loose with actual historicity, but it's not unentertaining. I admit, though, I'm rather hoping they discard the premise of history altogether and have the characters do ALL the Viking things, not just the raid on Lindisfarne but all the way to lying about Greenland ("Is it green? Oh, aye, it's positively verdant!") and pissing about in America for a bit. And THEN, when they run out of stuff to do (after having packed all the Viking Age into the span of a decade, tops), I want them to visit Egypt for a crossover season with Ancient Aliens that culminates in them stealing a starship and Viking their way across the galaxy. The last episode will be the first colonists on Mars cresting over a ridge only to find a big ol' runestone already there.

Just as Troy semi-de-mythified the Illiad, Vikings semi-de-mythifies The Saga of Ragnar Lodbrök. It's not meant to be historical.

@Frost
Ah, well, that both opens things up and shuts others down, I guess. What I meant about playing fast and loose was more about taking liberties with the way characters behave, in a sort of "eh, could have happened" way (the young monk in Northumbria who has traveled to Norway at some point if I'm reading his implication right, the half-sidelining of the rape and pillage stuff to keep the audience happy - which is completely understandable, mind you). Being accurate to actual historical events is something I'm less concerned about - I wasn't kidding about kinda wanting to see an overview of the Viking Age, almost like Forrest Gump. Didn't know it was based on an actual mythical dude, though, so that's cool (and also probably rules out trips to Byzantium, America, and Mars). The most fun thing about it, for me at least, is when they're just sort of Viking around with the English and their things, and nobody understands one another very well, and then somebody gets stabbed, and then a whole lot of people get axed, and the Vikings are very excited about all of it.
@Robo
Definitely interesting. If it's what they're hyping it up to be, I'd probably watch some fights. Feels very sci-fi.

Then perhaps you'd like the part in the original saga where the Swedish King that the Ragnarssons spend most of the tale fighting has a massive God-cow that can cast Mass Frenzy over enemy armies after it's been sated with enough human sacrifice.Â

Though Space Vikings going and killing the shit out of space would be quite an entertaining story in and of itself. The influence this would have on the other cultures they visit (much like some theorize they turned the Northern Amerindians from a peaceful people into a warrior culture) would be interesting indeed.Â

Re: [Official!] Project Horizons Comment Crew Chat thread.
Yo, so check it out. I like worldbuilding, and I'm either too lazy an asshole or too obsessive a fan to build my own world; so I've created a little world-state for post-game Skyrim, as a possible ground for hypothetical fics if I decide to stop being a lazy asshole. To widen the focus (significantly) the PC's accomplishments have been split among several wildly-varying people:
- Fanwank:
the Dragonborn managed to convince/bully the Blades into line, quasi-fusing them with the Greybeards in order to begin returning the teachings of the Thu'um to Tamriel, albeit in a controlled and limited fashion. The Dragonborn himself is a huge, hulking Nord (it's noted that he keeps getting bigger and freakishly stronger the more Dragons he consumes) and Odahving is both his primary advisor and sidekick and his main transportation
He obliterated the Brotherhood, but the Keeper took the Night Mother on to High Rock; where a still-unknown person became the Listener there.
Paarthurnax, since the Blades were more-or-less beaten into line, is alive and well at the Throat of the World. Reluctantly, Delphine is beginning to realize, to her chagrin, that he's not so bad
The new Harbinger of the Companions is an Breton who seems to favor, via various Mage Armor and resistance spells, going into battle practically naked with a knife in each hand. The fact that he's a devout Hircine worshipper and flashes from Beast to Man with speed and frequency also helps
It was a mixed-race and elite more-or-less Spec-Ops crew that managed to stop the Stormcloak Rebellion--though it remains the Dragonborn that was on the block at Helgen, since Alduin's intervention remains what prevented Ulfric's immediate death. The team functions a lot more like a conventional adventuring party than what's normally seen, with a few warriors, a healer, an archery-sneaker, a destructive-conjurer, ect. Their exploits throughout Tamriel are far from over.
Serana was awoken and taken to her home by a 'lesser' Vampire, who was subsequently 'elevated' to Daughter of Coldharbor status by Harkon and proceeded to rather take a shine to His Lordship. Upon Isran and Serana infiltrating the Castle and assassinating/ fighting Harkon, the new Lady Volkihar (who refuses, despite Serana's pleas, to believe that Harkon was simply manipulating her emotions to make her a more loyal tool before disposing of her--and it's ambiguous whether this was the case or not) has turned from outright aggression against Skyrim's Holds in favor of manipulating, enthralling, turning or replacing people of power in order to turn mortal men against the Dawnguard--and, even more unfortunately, appears to have made an ally of Durnehviir, who is gradually becoming re-attuned to life outside the Soul Cairn
Serana is currently working to convince Isran to accept help from the vampire-loathing Companions (who are rapidly turning into an out-and-out Hircine cult, with even non-Circle members often being turned) but Isran is reluctant, since they are, after all, Daedra worshippers as well; just of a different Prince
The College has experienced a huge resurgence thanks to, ironically, a Redguard taking over as Archmage and the faculty and students (with a nice bit of Imperial funding) starting a campaign to show the citizens of Skryim how magic can help their daily lives--It doesn't hurt that the mighty Dragonborn himself is well-known as a skillful enchanter-- to the point whereHealing Hands, at bare minimum, is required for most Hold Guards, many favor Candlelight over torches, and some even favor Bound weapons or spells over regular weapons (which remain required in reserve)

Anyone run into this too? I'm trying to get a free-to-play game (Sunrider) on Steam, but the "play game" button does nothing. I was pointed to this thread, but the install link there also does nothing. What do?

I've just checked; the problems are with all Steam F2P games, not just Sunrider. Although the official site has a direct download, so that's good.

In Sunrider's case, things are great. But I'll have to find a direct download (if any) for any other F2P game I'd want on Steam.
Also, I found something curious: There Came An Echo is a tactical RPG (?) that looks somewhat like Shadowrun, and is controlled with voice commands. The reviews seem to favor this feature.

Does history remember the origin of the word "waifu"? Preferably in the form of a name. Then maybe we could do a Kickstarter to hire a hitman or something.

Uhhhhhh... Well, I guess it's nothing to lose your head about, a lot of it sounds very theoretical still, but dang. The mad scientist in me wants to see what'd happen if we tried this.

Hmm... Somehow I don't remember seeing this happen in any story (literature or cinematic), except for one very old Soviet SF novel.
Well, let's see what happens!

Yo Hinds!
I think you may want to play this game
Here's the result of my first playthrough:
I think you may want to play this game
Here's the result of my first playthrough:
- Spoiler:
- First play-through, and I think I may have unlocked the Golden Path without paying too much attention to it:
- Spoiler:
- Chapter 1
On the day you first built Al, you awoke from a dream about a robot companion to head to the lab. Your graduate school advisor pressured you to make Al more acceptable to the military. After some back and forth, you ended up making a metal bipedal robot with a masked head and humanoid hands.
Then you went back to your place to teach Al some words.
Chapter 2
The next day, you hooked up Al's cell phone batteries and demoed for Elly. You then spent the afternoon trying to teach science to a bunch of kids with Elly.
As months passed, you became busy teaching Al about the world through high school textbooks and taking rhim to the dump. Your funding from the NSF kept you in Professor Ziegler's good graces during this time.
In time, Mark Ali, a reporter for the San Francisco Chronicle, heard about Al and asked for an interview. You agreed.
Chapter 3
You gave Mark an interview, and allowed Mark to come back to your place to interview Al. Mark invited you to his place to try to get to know you better. There, you found that drones often harassed Mark because various automated algorithms had marked him as suspicious.
Mark wrote an article that was generally positive about you and Al. When Professor Ziegler found out about the article, he was very displeased, but decided that the most effective way to get you out of his hair was to let you graduate.
Mark's article also attracted the attention of one "robotObsession1987," known in real life as Silas Cooper. When you met up over coffee, he told you that he used to do classified robotics work for a government lab, but left because he couldn't tell what nefarious purpose the technology would be used for.
That Saturday, Elly asked you to stay out of the limelight a little more often. You managed to smooth things over, but it felt like a dangerous point in your relationship.
A month or so later, you received your doctorate. Shortly thereafter, your father passed away. You resolved then to work on better medical technology that could save people like your father in the future.
You decided the best way to change the world was to start a business, which you named Intelligent Design. Elly and Silas had already volunteered to be your first employees.
Chapter 4
Your first potential client for Intelligent Design was Galen Medical, a surgical equipment company. They were happy with the state of your technology, and gave you a contract that allowed you to purchase a factory. That allowed you to build a robot factory in Alaska. You hired an all-human workforce as a gesture to the local community. When you finally shipped robots to Galen Medical, they were pleased with the robots you delivered. Your business suffered a blow when Chinese companies, aided by Chinese government hackers, began to steal your technology. Eventually, Intelligent Design went broke, and you were forced in bankruptcy to sell all your assets.
Unemployment seemed to be common in the United States, and it seemed people tended to blame either robots or China. Riding on both of these sentiments, Jacqueline Irons won the presidency. After President Irons enacted a series of protectionist tariffs to keep out Chinese robots, Sino-American relations steadily worsened. Your unemployment just happened to put you in the right place at the right time to stop the assassination of the Chinese Prime Minister.
Chapter 5
The nation enjoyed an unprecedented era of prosperity, driven by the cooperation of the United States and China in sharing their robot technology. Congratulations!
Chapter 6A
As robots took over more and more roles, many people felt increasingly displaced and alienated. Josh was being pressured to step down from his company. Mark was contemplating suicide after he finished his book about you, since most nonfiction work was now being done by robots. (Luckily, you talked him out of it.)
But not everybody was sad in this new world: Elly seemed to be perfectly content to take advantage of the robots' utopia to create art. Juliet was busy fighting crime as "the Crusader." (You even joined her as a sidekick.) Silas was excitedly anticipating the Singularity that would make everyone immortal, which he believed was right around the corner. The Church of the Enlightened Al was gaining adherents as people turned to robots to solve all their problems.
On the whole, you thought the world of robots was pretty good, and decided to leave the robots in charge.
Chapter 7
In 2049, you went to Surprise, Arizona to surprise your mother with a gift for the holidays. You learned it was your surgical technology that had kept her alive this long. On returning to San Francisco, you had a brief stroke, followed by a vision of a robot companion -- the same one you saw thirty years before. In the hospital, the doctor told you you had Algernon's Disease, a rare disease that increased your intelligence, but came at the price of increasing seizures, comas, and possibly, death.
Instead of undergoing surgery, you chose to create a robot body for yourself. With your robot self pursuing all of your ambitious plans for you, you finally had time to relax and enjoy your relationship with Elly, and you lived happily ever after.
Things that aren't mentioned in there:
Al is the one in control of all the robots in the world, but given rhis low autonomy score (8) and Singular empathy score (45), he's content doing basically nothing of that. Also he was the one who selflessly saved the Chinese Prime Minister on that fateful day.
And I headcanon that my robot-self is going to work on increasing the robots autonomy and more generally continue to work toward the greater good.
Final stats:- Spoiler:
- Year: 2049
54-year-old Dr. Catherine Doniec
Humanity: 92%
Gender: female
