The problem with FSoG, from what I hear, is that the relationship described is actually an abusive one, but isn't _portrayed_ as such. The criticism being that it further skews the already totally screwed up "norms" on what is "supposedly" healthy relationships but actually isn't.

Basically, people bitch about the book because it sets an unhealthy exemple on many level, and that might be dangerous for people IRL.

I don't want to defend this book, because honestly it seems like garbage, but it's fiction and like every other piece of fiction it's not meant to educate you on how to go about a relationship (or anything else for that matter) at all.

If it was being pushed as some educational piece and being read in like home economics class or something I can see that criticism being legit but as far as I can tell it's just trashy erotica. Like Kim and her many gripes about porn it's up to the viewer or the audience to step back and recognize they're viewing a fantasy.

In short, it's not fiction's job to educate anyone on anything.

So here's a topic people might find interesting: my RPG group, after our session, had as one of our bits of postgame chat a discussion, spawned from a discussion of the FoE game, of what FoE would be like with various versions of an evil LittlePip. Lawful, chaotic, starting out evil, turning during the story... that sort of thing. I realized that it might kind of make sense for her to start turning in Appleoosa (not that I think she did in canon, to be clear). I mean, she grew up friendless, with an alcoholic, somewhat neglectful mother, she broke into places for fun, when she finally met her idol, who she was crushing on despite incompatible orientations, Velvet used her to get out without any thought for her wellbeing afterwards, she leaves everything behind and ventures out into the Wasteland, she's exposed to all that violence and learns that not even the Stables were good, and when she finally finds Velvet, said mare is happily working for slavers. Some mares in that situation might decide that obviously goodness wasn't all it was cracked up to be and that maybe they ought to be more proactive about looking out for themselves.

Anyway, just tossing this up as a potentially interesting conversation topic.

@Last: the problem, you see, is that a very large number of people are dumb, and the media coverage surrounding the commercial success of the book tend to push as actually a good example. I know it's shit, _you_ know it's shit. They don't.

Add to it a number of pre-existing cultural issues, and the aforementioned dumb people will be more likely to act even dumber.

This is why people bitch about these things. Not just because of a snobbish sense of superiority but because they actually have an impact on people's lives, however ridiculous you might see it.

Of course, some people push these bitching a bit far (Kim), but this doesn't mean that all people bitching are wrong.

@Harmony I follow an artist on tumblr, I'm not going to say who as it's irrelevant. Point is she's got an anything goes tumblr and occasionally she likes to reblog the art of what I'm assuming is another female artist.

The art in question features a male character in relationships with female furry characters, the idea is that he is physical abused by these characters because these fictional female charcters are larger physically than male humans.

I can only come to two conclusion on why she reblogs this art (and implictly likes it).

1. She likes the idea of a male in a physically abusive relationship with females.

2. She like the art style and all that entails. (Character design, color, etc.)

There could be another reason for it, but I always assumed it's number one.

This is why I'm okay with it. As a person that I don't really know personally beyond knowing the fact she is an adult I give her at least the minimum amount of respect that you should. And that is assuming she's smart enough to understand the difference between reality and fantasy and that she knows in real life it would be wrong to abuse your partner/anyone regardless of their sex.

The people who read/watched this and think "Oh man, this could lead to women thinking this okay in real life" are absolutely without a doubt being snobby. In order to say that you have to assume other people who have read it lack your intelligence to understand that what's in a book or on a screen isn't reality.

To me that is offensive, to say that a book is the reason anyone would stay with someone abusive lessens the reason they actually do. It makes them seem weak minded which I doubt highly that they are.


If this book was made for children I might see the harm in it, but neither the book or the movie to the best of my knowledge are.

In general, I'm sort of worried for the S5 opener.
Worst case scenario: the writer has spent time after S4 by reading Atlas Shrugged (or Sword of Truth) and got super inspired. And the "equal" ponies will be terrible socialism strawmen.

My problem with FSoG is threefold.

1. It started off being a Twilight fanfiction and just changed the names.

Already off to a great start.

2. It glorifies abusive relationships, which is most certainly NOT a matter to be joked about.

3. The actors who portrayed the main characters have gone on the on record as apologizing for what garbage the movie is.

It's obviously a cash grab for what they think people like. But because movies take time to make they kind of missed the boom.

I would pay to see that show.

But what I like the most is the idea of the new dinosaur 'killing for sport'. Something about the concept of that gives me fucking chills.
