Hey Harm, have you play E.Y.E. Divine Cybermancy? It's fucking amazing, if very confusing since the developers decided to do the english translation using Google Translate, so you should be able to actually understand the text since it's originally French.
Nope, first I'd have to find the courage to actually flirt with someone.swicked wrote:Completely separate topic: anyone doing anything for valentines day?

Really just general insecurity. Doesn't help that I spent most of my childhood not being able to speak fluently for more than a sentence, so my self-confidence for speaking and in general is pretty shot.swicked wrote:...do you have a crush? Or is this a more general insecurity?

Gameplay wise, it's an FPS/RPG, I'd say it takes many cues from the original Deus Ex, you have a energy bar which you can use for clones, cloaking, super jumping, sprinting etc. You spend money you get from enemies to upgrade both yourself and get more weapons and powers. But the main draw is that when you try to hack a door the door will try to HACK YOU BACK.Harmony Ltd. wrote:@ST: never heard of it, no. What's the gameplay about?
Setting/thematically it's Deus Ex + 40k + Blade Runner, maybe you'll be able to understand the story since you're French.

@Nostalgia
Right there with you on the goddamn memes. Not to mention I'm unsure what was so great about the '90s. The '90s saw the invention of "mallcore"/"nu" metal, which was arguably much worse than hair metal. I will say that the decade had a better overall aesthetic than the '00s, I guess. Not a fan of the... iPod glossy minimalist stuff.

Since you brough it up I took a small amount of time to look into it and came across a feminist wiki page. Before I talk about what I found I have no idea if this is a good source and I'll of course listen to what you think it's supposed to be or what it is supposed to be.
What I found was a racist/sexist wiki. Through out the page it continued to bring up only white males (I guess I'm to assume they are the only ones with this privilege) and then went on to imply that even if a white male were to accidentally have their penis mutilated through circumcision and then live the rest of their life as a homeless person that this fictional (Though to be honest this probably happened to someone. There's a shit ton of us.) male would still have privilege.
At it's core privilege seems to want to reduce anyone's accomplishments or failures down to the color of their skin or other aspects of their birth they have no control over.
That's the conclusion I came to on this page. Like I said maybe this page is simply a bad source and didn't explain what privilege it supposed to mean in a feminist sense properly.
- Spoilered for Length:
It sounds like a dramatic oversimplification with some trimming and pruning to make the concept better fit a certain worldview. And, to be frank, even the actual theory is not without its problems - most of them are wording problems, more or less, but when we're talking sociology, wording is kind of important. For instance, considering stuff as a "privilege" makes it seem like a luxury, rather than a right or a standard; not too problematic when the word's being used by people who know the theory in-and-out for other people similarly (shall we say) privileged, but when the thronging masses get their filthy hands on it (ironic metaphor), you start seeing them thinking that the idea is to remove privileges (thought of as unfair luxuries due to the wording) from those who have them, rather than give them to people who don't - and then comes the "die whitehetciscum."
Onto some theory. I've never really studied privilege theory under anyone who understood it, fair warning, this is all just self-taught stuff, and if we take away anything from the current SJW debacle, it should (well, could) be that self-taught knowledge is only as good as the teacher, so, yeah. The basic idea is pretty much as obvious as gravity: different people have different advantages in a given society. Like, maybe I was born without arms or legs, so now I find a lot of things quite hard, like, say, scratching my back. The theory continues: people who have arms and legs aren't usually aware that being able to scratch your back isn't necessarily a given. Which is understandable. Theory continues: every now and then, we should look at the things we can do that we take for granted, and look at the people who don't get to take those things for granted, and see if we can't make it easier for the other guy (like by inventing robot arms and legs, or at least putting some sandpaper on the wall low down or something). This process will make for a better, happier society, where we feel closer to one another and less like disparate groups a-fightin' and a-feudin' (that last bit's my addition, incidentally, because IMO too much of privilege theory doesn't have an endgame and ends up reifying the things that make us disparate, which is a bad idea for a nation).
So, that's the base. Pretty uncontroversial, I think. Things get a bit harder when you start looking for "therefores," though. For one thing, not all of the problems raised by the theory have as obvious a fix as "build robot arms and legs." There's the statistical fact that having a "black" name makes you less likely to be hired for a given position, in general. How d'you fix that? Affirmative action? Works, but it's kind of a sledgehammer option and not really a fix so much as a band-aid. If there's no healing process to go with that band-aid, you're just covering up the wound with some flimsy gauze, to extend the metaphor. Push for making the application process anonymous? Kind of impersonal, but easier than trying to get rid of people's potentially unconscious associations. As I'm not a sociologist, I can't really speak to fixes, anyway.
So, yeah. Privilege theory isn't about invalidating successes, or reducing someone to their standing in a culture - it's a lens, a tool to look at and hopefully better culture. Let's extend the metaphor again: if the privilege theory-hammer is all you have, you're going to see a lot of nails. Even more so if it's only the whitehetciscum-privilege-hammer. It's a lens, a way to look at the world. You need a lot more than one to understand much of anything; if you lack a variety of lenses, you fail to see the forest through the trees, or vice versa - you can fail to see how a person's successes and failures are influenced by factors outside their control, or you can fail to see how a person is more than just a conglomeration of how their various identity-politics groups are seen by their culture.
All this using "check-your-privilege" as an attack is rank bullshit, incidentally. You know what the best way to make someone never look at their advantages is? Bash them over the head with them and tell them they have it easy and that nothing they've ever succeeded at has been on them. Fuckin' idiots, I swear. If you're going to bandy about academic terms, you don't get to use the excuse that you have a right to be upset, not when you take a shotgun to your own feet. Those feet are representatives of the theory you're (ab)using.

That's definitely one of 'em. Not just not experiencing the thing, but not having to stress about experiencing it - big part of the theory is awareness. And meta-awareness, I guess - awareness of not being as aware.

Re: [Official!] Project Horizons Comment Crew Chat thread.
A big part of privilege is race, too--people look at the fact that most of the upper class are white and more of the lower class are minorities and immediately think that the system is inherently and ruthlessly trying to keep minorities down and that anyone white, no matter their actual economic standing, are 'privileged' and are automatically prone to be more wealthy. This more-than-likely ties into the increasingly-common victim complex among the "SJW"s and their opponents alike, blissfully ignorant of the fact that an inequality of wealth and the subsequent passing on of that wealth to one's inheritors (for generations hence) is an inherent part of any society or economic system--there were people in Soviet Russia who had palaces.

It's sort of Immortal-style corpsepaint (because Abbath is adorable), but I've been thinking of switching it up to something more like a kawaii-lookin' black metal thingamabob. Hard to find something sufficiently cute, or a good base to work with.
BTW, new stuff got added to that Star Wars bundle, so anyone who bought it should check and see.

We usually talk about certain things that are from the 90's, not the time period itself. Cause, well, it was the time when everything went to shit, and kept on going to shit until the country had defaulted.
Well, except for the people who are members of NGOs (or like listening to those) and like to bullshit about how the 90s were full of awesome democracy and crap.

Earlier today, a company of Rakkasans (one of the more hardcore brigades from the already-hardcore 101st Airborne) was moving to an airbase to head back home after a rotation in- theater. As per the Chair Force's rules, the buses were emptied out and searched while the men waited nearby. At this time, allegedly, mean things were said to one of the female airmen supervising the soldiers.
And so there they've been, for the past nine hours, with no meals and under armed guard by airmen while every single Rakkasan is interviewed so they can determine who said such mean things.
And people wonder why no one likes the fucking Chair Force.

If you wanna cut unnecessary branches, start with the Marines--nowadays, they just do the same shit as the Army; just about thirty times fucking worse. For instance, our procedure for taking contact while dismounted would be to immediately return fire, take cover, and get the squad coordinated to gain fire superiority and either outflank and shoot down the enemy or just use the explosives, ordinance and fire support we have to take them out. The Marines' procedure is to run towards the firing enemy and hopefully maybe not die. All their famed sixteen-week boot camp (plus however long their Infantry school training is; as opposed to 14 weeks total training for Army Infantry) accomplishes is to simply beat out any independent thought or common goddamn sense. They specifically seek out the dumbest, most brainwashed people to promote and make leaders.
Then, once you're done getting rid of them, then you just stick the Air Force into the Navy, because the Navy's actually not retarded from what I and others have dealt with them.

Who in turn works for a villain whom (based on what I've heard from Kill La Kill via vague hearsay) already more-or-less control the world, or at least hold vastly more power than either hero or main villain and has a weird-ass head:
The hero has an impoverished and rather unhinged woman travelling with them:
While the villain has an sword-using enforcer who proves a deadly match for the hero; whom the villain earned the loyalty of via defeat in combat:
The villain dwells in a towering, white-walled palace:
The hero's transforming armor talks to them and has sentience and some level of influence over itself and them:
And the hero's father has some weird attachment to their kid's sexuality--Ryuko's dad made her armor skanky as fuck, while Gut's dad....kinda sold him to a mercenary buddy of his. For an evening, at least. When said Guts was six.
- KLK spoiler though personally I think it's minor:
- There is actually an answer to why Ryuko's Kamui is so revealing but it's very brief.
- actual spoiler so I can ask someone who has watched the series if i'm right and my memory isn't just fuzzy:
- When the cast joins nudist beach and the elite four have their final goku uniforms made and find that they're more revealing doesn't someone say that with less surface area they could put a higher percentage of life fibers into the uniforms?
