Re: [Official!] Project Horizons Comment Crew Chat thread.
So, I was thinking about New Vegas, and more specifically the romance options available IG.
I know that as a man you can romance Arcade Gannon, and to some degree Benny too, but are there other man-on-man romance options available?
Also, on the woman-on-woman side... I seem to remember Veronica being a possibility, but is Lady Cassidy also one?

And I just (finally) finished catching up on Asylum. Quite an interesting read, that. It is interesting to note that Twilight even acknowledges that the "ends justify the means" approach she's taking to manipulate her friends is a dangerous, dark route...... Even as she does so anyway.

There weren't any (canon/ non-mod) romance options in NV; originally, one was to be able to romance at least Cass and Gannon, I know, it was planned earlier in development, but like so much about New vegas, it was cut.Harmony Ltd. wrote:So, I was thinking about New Vegas, and more specifically the romance options available IG.

Thinking about it, Benny should have totes been a possibility as a companion, with the right speech checks. That would have opened interesting story possibilities.
That's why I don't line killing him in his sleep after shagging him. This feels unsatisfying.
Like, a perfect revenge would be gaining his trust and respect, and THEN killing from a bullet in the head while monologuing to his face :v

- Spoiler:
- The plague doctor? Personally, I'm inclined to think he, at this point, is a more benevolent entity (Luna isn't likely to be able to pierce the shadows for that long with her normal magic, though Discord is an option) and the Asylum masks his or her actual intentions by making him appear to Twilight as a terrifying figure.
That's assuming, of course, that he's not a hallucination, like the mirror-Twilight and Celestia's voice also may be. Without doubt, though, is that there's shady shit going on in Broadhoof with Rose's treatment (and in general) even if it is the "real world"--or if there is a "real world". It's just as likely that they're mutually fictional and simultaneously real, and the key, as mirror-twilight alluded, is to make Twilight pick between the two.

- Spoiler:
...I'm not sure he's fake. I could have sworn, in that scene where he was chasing twilight, he broke a light bulb, right? And now he's given Twilight a physical key... though I guess that could be some kind of persistent hallucination.
Twilight, I feel, definitely has some mental problems. Stronger than vanilla Twilight. It's been a while since I last read the whole thing but I remember coming to the conclusion that, even if she came to Asylum from the vanilla world, she ended up in a body with a defective brain.
I don't think Twilight is just crazy, though. There's got to be more to it than that. It doesn't feel right, to me.
Regarding this plague doctor, though... I'm tempted to think someone is pranking her. Maybe pranking multiple patients. Maybe a patient, maybe a staff member, just picking on those that are more paranoid than others. Giving out keys to nothing, then watching as the patient hides it and lies about it while they make all these attempts to conceal it and use it on every lock they can find.
Which, you know, would be pretty funny :P
- Spoiler:
- It's funny you mention coming to Asylum from the vanilla world, since a working theory of mine for several chapters now has been that either Rose's treatment or the Shadow has pretty much 'jaunted' Twilight's mind into an alternate (and very crazy) Twilight's body--and brain, as you mentioned. Considering the changes and shady shit surrounding the treatment, though, as well as the clearly sinister shit that Nurse Rachet's got going on, it's definitely more than just Twilight being insane in a mental hospital, even if she is and the vanilla world's a delusion.
As for the doctor.....yeah, that would actually be pretty funny for a particularly asshole-ish doctor, I'm inclined to think that the staff proper would notice the perpetrator eventually, even if the testimonies concerning the doctor were unreliable.Â
Plus, from an unfortunately out-of-universe perspective, I don't think a harmless (or, at least, unrelated) prank would find itself such significance and attention in the plot when there's already so much to deal with.

Your theory is about the same as my own, in fact; vanilla Twilight in Asylum Twilight's mind.
Maybe this was the actual basis of his theory and procedure... attempting to "cure" insane ponies by either drawing, or copying, the mind of their equivalent from a different universe. Though we've yet to hear anything of a multiverse theory...
...anyway, yeah. Twilight remembers her life because it was her life, but she's still in a diseased brain and this transfer did nothing to change that in the least.
And I suppose the plague doctor really shouldn't just be someone pranking... but I dunno about it being magical. I don't recall it doing anything particularly magical of hallucination-like as of yet. There might just be some storage locker somewhere with old Asylum equipment like this plague doctor uniform and someone might be donning in order to actually help Twilight or others in some way.
It's just that, for all its significance... the plague doctor feels like a red herring. It doesn't quite fit the rest of Twilight's experiences, I feel like, and I can't think of a good reason why a plague doctor would be personally significant to her such that an ally, or even potential hallucination, would appear as it.
It only really makes sense in the context of the Asylum being an old hospital, so I feel like it has more to do with the place than it does to do with her...
- Spoiler:
- With the alternate universe theory, though, the question comes of how, exactly, the shadows fit into things--Mirror Twilight could either be a manifestation of the Shadows, as is what is currently believed, or it could be a hallucination of Asylum Twilight's sick mind--after all, the doctors already know not to let Twilight have mirrors if they can help it.
The lights seem to turn off whenever the plague doctor's near, though that could be ordinary unicorn magic.Â
What's interesting to note is that both the plague doctor and Rose represent yet another jarring shift from the vanilla world--while vanilla Equestria's past contains plenty of nasty stuff, it's mostly, so far as we've seen, in the form of monsters and tyrannical, malicious creatures. A faceless, unintelligent and sickeningly lethal force like a plague is something that's not been seen. Likewise, modern Equestria has its own share of monsters and dangers, relations with Saddle Arabia seem to be amicable--no war with them is ever so much as hinted at. In both cases, and in the characters' various pasts, it seems to hammer home--whether to contrast Twilight's delusions with reality, Twilight's reality with the Shadow's lies, or one reality with another--that the world of Asylum is not the storybook place equestria is. Dreams don't come true, people can't live off of doing what they love, and evil isn't a monster that can be defeated with words and displays of friendship--it's a thundercloud overhead, wearing the face of an army in the desert or a sickness in the air. An acute case of the chronic blight that hangs over the world.
In that same vein, look at the characters themselves--Happy, fulfilled farmer Applejack is a struggling and ill-fated doctor. Happily married Guard Captain Shining Armor is a lonely, portly skirt-chaser. Fluttershy, Pinkie, Rainbow--all their faults are amplified tenfold and their accomplishments are mere aspirations and self-delusions. Again, this showcases either deliberate, subversive will in their conception or that the "real" characters are idealized delusions of a sick filly.

If anything, it introduces the possibility of the shadows being a side-effect of the kind of magic being employed. I'm reminded a bit of the game Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. The main character starts using time magic and a kind of guardian is created by the abuse, attempting to hunt him down and return things to "normal". The Shadow is alternatively insisting Twilight accept the world of Asylum and trying to help her get back to her world. It might only be objecting to the struggle Twilight is having trying to move between one or the other and might only want things to be resolved.
And yeah, all the themes of this story are really engrossing. A very unsettling, fundamental shift in the paradigm
- Spoiler:
- Hell, perhaps it's the Asylum itself trying to kick her out--a Mirror-self egging her on, provoking her to keep going (even if only out of spite) when she'd otherwise start to listen to the doctors, and a Plague-Doctor to push her forward with a sense of dread and fear, along with a mystery to solve. It may be a tough, manipulative form of 'help'--but, hey, it's the spirit of a mental institution.
In other news, I finally managed to pay for and legally watch Frozen just today. Not quite the feelsy and fun flick that, say, Big Hero 6 was, but still a very clever little film with characters and dialogue that was quite well-done and had me laughing quite a bit.
Also, it's an interesting approach for a Disney film in regards to
- Spoiler:
- The villain. No monsters or demonic creatures, nor cartoonishly jerkish or tyrannical people--Hans is, from what we see of him, a fairly textbook example of a real-world sociopath. Not quite what you'd expect from a film about sisterly love and adorable snowmen.

- A Thought:
- Interesting. Â I'd not thought of it being an ordinary pony, only of it being either a hallucination or something trying to penetrate the illusion or the like (I of course favor the former). Â But suppose... Â What if it's an ordinary pony in the asylum, but not a prank? Â Twilight seems to have sent here by a court, after all. Â We don't know the details, but it's pretty clear she hurt someone. Â What if someone, the same person or another party, is still upset about that?
I'm personally still inclined to think that it, like the rest, is a hallucination (I remember interpreting the light bulb thing differently, for instance, and I think that the key is a persistent hallucination (no one else has seen it, and it hasn't worked on anything)), but it's an interesting idea.

- On that last point, I could see it happening, either as a red herring or as something that spurred Twilight to some extreme before she found out it was nothing. Â It could also be what I suggested above and be significant in a way other than the one it seems to be at the moment.
As an aside, I don't see Nurse Ratchet as sinister, or at least not necessarily so. Â She's flawed, yes, and a bit controlling and sometimes oddly affectionate (though potentially less of both than Twilight, our unreliable narrator, sees), but she works around a lot of people who are potential dangers to themselves and others, and it's her job to prevent that. Â In addition, Twilight was probably quite well-behaved previously; off in her own world she may have been, but it seems likely that, most of the time, she was very little trouble and might have tried to help others. Â I won't say yet that she isn't up to anything, but, assuming I'm remembering correctly, I could easily see her not being up to anything.

Well, yes, I referred to Olaf's intent, rather than his execution. He was a fair enough character--particularly for the symbolism of childhood innocence and whatnot surrounding him, and how that tied into Anna and Elsa's relationship--but his more childish humor was a lot less entertaining than Anna and Kristoff's banter or even Kristoff and Sven's "conversations"swicked wrote:Huh.Mister Frost wrote:adorable snowmen.
Olaf seemed... really pointless to me.
Well, that's not exactly true. I hated his frozen guts. He added nothing and was unnecessary. Cute little window dressing.
Disney movies... ugh.
Honestly, the only thing I liked about him were the cupcakes I got in Disney World inspired by him.
- The Wolf Among Us, Chapter 3:
You know, I KNEW from the moment I saw Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee were baddies, that I'd get to kill one of a matched set.
And I was right. And it was glorious.
Reminds me of the Weasleys all over again.
Anyway, plot is picking up! Bloody Mary is absurd, though. She practically redefines smug... a regular evil stereotype. Seems like she's being set up for a rather stunning fall.
And Bigsby is a werewolf? I mean, as a fable, he was just a wolf. The book of fables clearly depicted him as such.
I wonder if that will be explained... like, if he had a witch give him a human form through making him a werewolf instead of using a glamor.
'Cause werewolves are usually humans who turn into wolves, right? And he's a wolf who goes the other way.
I dunno, I found the silver bullet bit a bit lame. But maybe that's one reason why it didn't put him down for good... he's not really a werewolf at all.
...actually, now that I think of it, Bloody Mary even said he wasn't a "full werewolf", but that doesn't make much sense either.
- Re: Bloody Mary:
In the comics proper (and thusly, here, since the games are more-or-less canon) Bigby was, indeed, a wolf about the size of an elephant--Snow, with his permission, sliced him with a knife that had lycanthropic blood on the blade. That's why he doesn't need glamour; he's really a human until he decides to let the mask slip off a bit. The fact that the silver bullet didn't outright kill him--and the fact that he's extremely strong and durable even for a fable--is more to the fact that he's, again, an elephant-sized wolf wearing a man's skin like a coat.
So, yeah. Less  'werewolf' and more 'wolfwere'
