It seems like I'd really enjoy Dwarf Fortress, but I've already got too many time-sinks and too many hours in the day where I'm nominally supposed to be "productive"

Sometimes I hate having something akin to a real job.

Quick question to the crowd:

What is everyone's stance on banning?

Specificaly in this case, pieces of shit no one like and who are being an active nuisance to the board's ambiance, and who generally add nothing positive to any discussion?

Personnally, if we go from the principle we're a group of people just chillaxing together talking about pastel colored equines and weapons of mass destruction, I think those who put other people ill at ease or degrade the general ambiance should be un-welcomed.

But that's just, like, my opinion.

I keep trying to get into Dwarf Fortress but I keep running into the two brick walls of the UI and the ASCII graphics as one wall, and just how complicated picking a site and setting up a fortress is as the second wall. Maybe I need to get into it through a trade off game, where every player in the group plays say, a year.

@Harmony, I'd only vote to ban the person if they were incredibly pissing me off (or supremely annoying) and they refused to change or leave peacefully. And since I have a very high tolerance for such things I'd probably abstain from most votes, since I really don't have much of an opinion either way.

I started playing it last night at about 9 or 10 I think and then it was 5am. Woke up with a splitting headache, too.
The thing's a little addictive, even if it seems like it needs more instruction. Took me a while to figure out the way to assign prisoners to job was through the guard deployment screen. Not sure how that's supposed to be intuitive.
But yeah, I know, it's a beta.

I wish more than anything there was a way to get them to stop sending you prisoners when you're trying to build facilities for grants and such. The daily grind of ten more cells, then ten more, then ten more gets annoying pretty fast.

Still, the thing is a blast.
Cheers! I've been meaning to get to playing it after I finish being consumed by Worm (thanks, Theory).

From what I understand about it, it's one of those games that when you get really good at it, you start to question what that implies about yourself. Sort of like that one guy who beat Sim City by turning it into a totalitarian nightmare.

Yeah, I still remember that video.

Though the same can be said for every strategy game, really.

There's usually little if any common ground between what's efficient and what's ethical.

I agree on the stipulation that we give fair warning to the person and only ban those who are maliciously degrading or needlessly shitposting and not those who merely disagree politely or joke around.

I do not because such people care little about what comes after. I got myself in trouble once in a Indian studies class while we were covering the Mahabharata. The basics of that epic is there are two families one of which in typical epic fashion is all good the other is all bad. At the end of the day as is typical of Indian Epics everyone is dead and I argued that the Pandava (The all good) were the villains of the piece.

It's typical of everyone but Caesar and Genghis Khan that every great conqueror leaves behind nothing but desolation and death. Reading a history of the Mongol advance in particular is a great reading on how to screw yourself. The Khan's for their day were remarkably restrained only going murder crazy when rulers did dumb things like beheading envoys or murdering guests.

Well, Alexander was pretty okay. It's just that after he died, everything fragmented and fell apart.

Which is my point, so damn few of them think about "what happens after". Caesar got lucky while Khan was one of the few who planned what was going to happen after this death. History is littered with examples of people who were better killers than everyone else who could not even convince of a time after they were gone.

I started playing Quake Live today. It's pretty fun if you like old-school, twitch-based shooters. It gets a little frustrating at times, but that's why it's good to play with friends. Not only does the game run well on cheap PCs, it's actually a good game despite being F2P. It's just simple-minded "shoot everything that moves" fun.

I believe Scyto the other day was asking about what kind of alcohol people recommended. It's way too late for the joke but I stumbled across this today.

Well, I was able to buy Wasteland 2 for $1.57 thanks to finally selling those two souvenir cases that dropped for me during the CS:GO ELS One tournament.

Needless to say I am a happy man.

Or I would be if I could actually play it instead of needing to study for the three exams I have next week...

Hot damn. I really want to get into King Crimson, but the band's constant lineup changes and reissues make it hard to know where to start. I know the best way is to just dive in, but I like having a sense of chronology of a band when I'm going through their catalog. Ah, well. A classic song: 21st Century Schizoid Man.

Anyone watching the League of Legends world championship thingy? There have been some pretty strong games, and North America (well, TSM, at least) is really showing up.

@iLateralGX
Awesome thing to look forward to, though. And hey - they'll have patched any bugs still floating around by the time you get to it, with any luck!

It seems easier to have just shut down the business until they could produce a valid liscense if they refused to show one. Not making any revenue for several days or however long it took seems like an appropriately strong motivator.

Your missing part of this story, it's been making the rounds so here is the facts of the case.

1. For decades like everywhere else in America inspectors go around Florida once or twice a year (With the odd random inspection) to do inspections and/or to inspect new barber locations. Just like with a heath and safety inspection you pay the state a small fee they inspect your property and give you an A,B,C or D ranking or a pass/fail ranking saying your certified to do whatever it is your business does.

2. In Florida re-inspections of barbers normally take less than five minutes while initial inspections can run as long as an hour. Here is a quote from the piece

AP wrote:“On August 19, 2010, two days before the sweep, Inspector Fields and another DBPR inspector conducted walkthroughs of six of the target locations, including Strictly Skillz. Though the purpose of the walkthrough was to gather information for the operation, the inspectors did so under the guise of performing a routine inspection, verifying that the barbers’ licenses were current and valid and inspecting the barbers’ workstations. During the inspection of Strictly Skillz, the barbers were cooperative, no violations were found, and no citations were issued. Inspector Fields even commended [owner Brian] Berry on the tremendous progress he had made in the shop.”

3. So after inspecting business the sane way, IE walk in the door, identify yourself and say hello then do your inspection... they did six inspections found nothing what so ever and came back a few days later smashing in door with SWAT vans in assault gear with all the taticool tools. Where on after roughing up several people, causing lost business breaking shit they once again found... nooothing!

4. Needless to say this was fucking insane. The court wanted to make them aware of this fact thus the news story.

It seems a lot of cops in quieter districts like that have a bit of wannabe in them--they'll take any chance they can get to put on the gear and bust in like operators, acting all scary and commanding.

The shitty part is that there are good cops out there. It's just they have their names ruined by chucklefucks like this
