I'm just saying it seems like a lot of work to live out a power fantasy, or whatever the reason for this was. I'd think fines, or as I said before, in the case the owners continued to be uncooperative shut down their business until they were willing to comply would probably be effective.

I'd at the very least hope that those options would be a lot less work.

It seems a lot of cops in quieter districts like that have a bit of wannabe in them--they'll take any chance they can get to put on the gear and bust in like operators, acting all scary and commanding. 

The shitty part is that there are good cops out there. It's just they have their names ruined by chucklefucks like this

It just always seems like, if there's one, it's an entirely department supporting them and claiming their actions were justified. This whole cops sticking together thing makes whatever good cops there are out there seem like accomplices. All the cops involved in that raid were entirely apathetic about their actions. It reminds me of that other article a while back in which a bunch of cops raided a residential house a family was staying in and ended up throwing a flash bomb on an infant and burning a hole through his chest.
The official stance the department came out with later was just that they were not responsible for the incident. I think the exact words were that, if the county helped pay for the child's medical expenses, it'd be "against the law".

If these cops are getting away with being assholes so often, it IS because the rest of them aren't willing to stand up to them for it.

Oh, no argument there. That's part of the big difference between most LE agencies and the military (if you'll forgive the frequent comparisons I make to the latter): militaries police themselves up and have far-reaching superiors that, unpleasant as it may be sometimes, enforce discipline and standards (it is, in fact , the SGM's job to be an asshole) while police officers are likely to be personal friends with just about anyone who could hold them accountable.

That's why I get annoyed when people talk about "militarized police departments". If they were militarized, they'd be being held to standard and held constantly accountable, and being trained far more heavily. Putting the same cholesterol-filled officers in surplus BDU's and handing them armor and carbines isn't militarization, it's justifying your budget.

My friend's dad has a job in the military, I used to go campling with him and his son. He made us walk twelve miles one day, that's completely unrelated.

Anyway, he was deployed one summer and when he came back he told us about this heavy Hawaiian guy that carried around this tiny dog. Now I could have misunderstood him or maybe I'm remembering wrong but apparently that guy was in the military. It's always possible he was lying, but my buddie's dad never gave me that impression.

I'm torn between wanting to believe this was a conspiracy by the barbershop Mafia to shut down rivals; thinking that the entire department had just watched Sweeney Todd and were real afeared, man; and the almost certain truth that the cops in that town were just a bunch of overpaid, overempowered children that wanted a chance to try out their special tactical toys.

Man, if I had some capital, some sort of psychosis, and the drive to conquer... Well, point is, you could probably carve yourself a small kingdom out of a chunk of Detroit with some basic infrastructure and some manpower.

Hell, a bit of revolutionary rhetoric and offered supplies of everything from food to weaponry (and the accompanying ever-valuable resource of self-determinism and independence) one could turn the impoverished masses, at least some of them, into said manpower. The thing though is that it probably won't. It may result in a slight increase in crime, but I think part of what makes american's american is that we don't resort to extremes like terrorism until the very last straw. Until then we knuckle under and do whatever we gotta do. Like in the story, the most radical thing people are doing is protesting, and they're being denied access to water. Instead of going to the water company and setting off a bomb people are going to homeless shelters and bumming water off neighbors.
