Plus, that works with literally everything you do. Every thought you have, every meal you eat, etc.
Is that supposed to be "profound"?
To today's educationally-challenged youth? Probably.
These are kids that think spouting off something they saw on the internet makes them fit in.
I'm starting to understand why old people act the way they do, looking at the youth of 'today' and shaking their heads wistfully as they recall a time when things were easier.
Heck, our youths were full of things we enjoyed, and kids today look at it and say "Man, that's boring, how did you get by without 360-Noscoping?" or whatever crap they're spouting now.
I'm just glad I'm unique. Where's the fun in being the same as everyone else?
You spout your nuggets of wisdom, I'll get by with what I've got.
Yes, basing my views on life off of a comedian. God forbid I base it off whatever you do...
Life's a lot easier when you can find things to laugh at in it. (Although Politics and Religion provide plenty of material on their own merit)

So, basically, you're saying "no, the statement I just quoted as deep wisdom is not, as illustrated somehow by dumb children."Vinylshadow wrote:To today's educationally-challenged youth? Probably.

The world isn't balanced. There is no "karma". You work under the rules you're presented with, or you make up your own, but assuming everyone is or should play by the same ones is just setting yourself up for disappointment.
But I don't think and didn't say you get what you deserve. A lot of people deserve a lot of shit, that doesn't mean they get it. Murderers deserve to go to jail, they deserve that. Doesn't mean they recieve that. Guarantee and deserve are not synonyms.

Well, one can always just accept things the way they are, or change them for what you believe to be the better. This nation wouldn't exist if we'd have said "The British are butt-fuckin' us. I guess I don't get that, either. Justice. I understand vengeance or forgiveness or being rewarded, but not whatever it is you are saying. Like something should or ought to lead to another thing in any sense other than causal. Not ought to as in the thing should cause the other thing, but ought as in that's what's... right? Appropriate? Proper?
No offense, but that just seems like another way to be unhappy and unsatisfied rather than accepting the world as it is.

Yes, that's why you'll note I said "what you believe to be better" as applying the already debatable nature of objective morality to international politics is pretty much a hopeless concept.swicked wrote:Replace "better" with "however I'd like it to be, to the best of my ability" and you got it.Mister Frost wrote:Well, one can always just accept things the way they are, or change them for what you believe to be the better. It's just that the British undoubtedly thought it was better and more just to continue to rule over the colonists the way they saw fit to. Plus tax them however they needed to support their country. I don't get who exactly you could say was "in the right", there, but the americans (at least, those that supported independence) certainly benefited by getting rid of the brits, so they did.
By comparison, the colonists in Canada (IIRC) never declared their independence. They were just given more and more powers of autonomy until they got to the point they are at now, and that's what was "right" for them.

What you believe, what I believe and what the world believes are three completely different truths.

Re: [Official!] Project Horizons Comment Crew Chat thread.
Just my two cents on the subject of why people seek to shape the world into what they believe is better:
Self-interest and self-satisfaction are the obvious reasons. After all, why change the world to benefit only other people and not yourself in the process? Change is motivated by dissatisfaction: the more dissatisfied a person is, the more willing they are to take drastic measures to get their way, as is the basic idea behind war. Duty and sacrifice are applied under the pretense of self fulfillment. Even charity is done for self-satisfaction, which can be considered the goal of all people.
People are the sum of their experiences and influences. Right and wrong, common sense, and justice are merely derived from these factors.
TL,DR: Everyone is self-centered, despite delusions to the contrary. People see injustice as a personal obstacle to be destroyed if their morals contrast.
Not going to pretend this is in any way profound, though. It's been said before in many more words by philosophers for a millennia.
Not to derail, but how has everyone been progressing through life's slopes? Any notable events, or goals accomplished?

@Ketchup
I strongly disagree with this analysis, but only to a point. We're a social species, and we are very close to hardwired on basic fairness and to enjoy cooperating with one another. Yes, this urge takes form in making us feel good, so you can indeed argue that it's all self-interest, but I think that annihilates a lot of additional information that I think is pretty essential. Technically, there's nothing we can do that isn't self-interested (yet) because we only have access to our selves. But that "lens" isn't very useful for much, just as lumping together someone who donates most/all of their wealth to charity each year with someone who who goes on a massive rape spree as both being self-interested actors isn't very useful. Accurate, maybe, but not useful when it comes to figuring out why people do things, or when it comes to philosophizing about ethics and whatnot. Just my two cents, also certainly not profound or original.
@swicked

That certainly seems unreasonable, especially if you have explained it is beyond the abilities you are confident of. I'm sure that the lack of a dedicated programmer and overspecialization in electrical engineering(from what you've said, this appears to be the case) creates broader problems for the department as a whole.swicked wrote:Doing my best to try and find a new job ASAP.
None of my bosses understand programming in the least and want me to do something way beyond my depth as someone who hasn't taken a programming class in the last seven or more years.
I tried to convince them to bring in a contractor but my boss is an ass and promised them I could do this. He then proceeded to do nothing to lower my normal workload while giving me two months to complete this stupid thing.
All I want to do is abandon this company before I catch any more hell. I doubt I'd be fired over it (they don't fire people here, really... it costs too much to replace people) but I'm sick of this bs. I can't tell if my boss actually wants me to quit or not, but I hope he ends up looking awful when I leave and he has no more people that know anything whatsoever about programming within his group.
IE the engineering electrical and I&C group made up almost entirely of electrical engineers.
I've never had a job, but I've had the odd teacher who expected something beyond what they could teach me. Specifically, art, and I think I understand why that could become intensely frustrating; especially since that is how you make a living.
There seems to be an unending trend of management ineffectiveness in your field from what you've mentioned here.
I was speaking very broadly. It is true that most humans have urges to benefit the lives of others in a community; such behavior enabled us to develop large civilizations, and similar group behavior is observed in many species. In the association of rapists and philanthropists, one benefits others and one fulfills their own, infinitely more selfish desires. Both are fulfilling their wants at the basic level, and that is what I refer to. Why people do things is to me eventually traceable to their desires, no matter how generous or malicious.Overlong Analysis Cobalt wrote:@Ketchup

@EP: Was at a pirate themed birthday today. I somehow ended up with the "pirate name" of "booty", not sure yet on my stance of it xD I was also apparently the only to bring lethal weapons in my costume. Well, unless you also count a ceremonial knife.
Also, going with posts and responses, going with assuming the fan-picture was actually of recent chapters. Not surprised tbh x3
@VinylS: (Makeup) Yeah, personally just saw it as a waste of time and money. Especially the latest "only with our make-up, you can archive the natural, un-producted look!" gig. As apparently, we can't look normal and like we're not wearing make-up, without using make-up. There's a PH joke in here but it's worn out xD
(Carlin) I feelt a bit like commenting on that, but we've already talked about that too much when it comes to PH.
@Frost's unrelated post: The viking in me approves of this statement xP
And heh, Frost: "Complains about people that only supposedly see things their way, and ignoring everyone else's, along with hypocrites. > Seemingly blocks anyone who doesn't share their view" seems about right xD

So I start my move with a serious question about my new avatar and come back to find out we are having a sociology-economic political debate oh and I have to fork over an extra 700$ this month I was not planning on. Moving is hell, not doing it again if I can help it... this new place seems nice and nice in the way getting everything up to the third story and never wanting to do it again can seem nice.
Science Armstrong? Seriously? We go from Science Glory to Science Armstrong?
You won't take this seriously neither will I behold my new temporary avatar.

It's a Black Isle studios game made in the style of the old Infinity Engine games. Fantasy RPG. Looks... interesting, from the beta footage. Very oldschool, but with some twists to differentiate it from DnD-based stuff. Got a copy of the final edition coming, when it's released. I'm hopeful it'll be good, but not super confident. Still, for once Black Isle doesn't have a deadline looming that'll make them cut content (New Vegas, I'm looking at you), so who knows! I didn't love the plot of NV particularly, which is my main concern for the story-heavy design they're working with in Pillars of Eternity (that's the official name, as of now).Harmony Ltd. wrote:What's Project Eternity again? I'm trying the new Dwarf Fortress version. Not all 0.40.x features are actually implemented right now (the plants don't work right, yet), but it's kind of fun. Except that the fliers sometimes... oftentimes... get stuck in the new super-trees like cats. So I guess I'll have to remove all the flier tags from the pegasi again.
Creatures sometimes just fall off those trees, and there's a combat log of the creature's everyting being broken from hitting the ground.
Also, the interface is now more informative! Shocking, yes.
