Well, if I had an engineering degree and a family, I don't think I'd be really willing to join.

Taking care of my family would be a duty far outweighing the risks and costs associated with military life.

In France you need to be 25 years old or less to be able to join as Officer. Older than that you can't.

I'm not sure, but I think they don't join the military. Or maybe not as a career officer from the get go. I think you may be able to be a contract officer, and then if you want to do career you'll need to pass internal exams/competition to see if you can become career, in which case you'll to go back to school to follow supplementary training.

On the other hand, on the enlisted side, I think you can join even in your late twenties / early thirties, but that'll be for a limited number of jobs.

On a somewhat related subject, I wonder why it seems to be controversial to expect the average police-officer to meet some kind of fitness standards?

Saw two officers at a Krispy Kreme who looked like they'd have a hard time running after a suspect for more than 200 meters...

I mean, I don't expect them to meet, like, US Army standards, but at least you should expect them to be fit enough to actually do patrols.

Is the Fat Lobby so powerful in the US that they managed to convince people that it would be discriminatory to punish police-officers for not meeting fitness criteria?

This is the same generation that tells kids that "there are no losers" and hands out participation trophies and screams "bullying" and "hazing" at anyone that disagrees with them. 

As we may have discussed before, it's a matter of perspective. With people's lives absent actual problems (as in "I work my ass off or I die.") or real injustice to battle (like "people are being murdered en masse for the color of their skin" or "there is an actually oppressive government beating us down") they have to invent problems to solve. Now, acknowledging someone is a fucking tub of lard, even in the context of "exercise or you will die" is 'bullying'. Gay marriage? Transgender-ism-y-ness? Legitimate issues. Worth discussion. "I'm actually an Elf in a man's body", "I'm actually four chicks and three dudes", "I'm not a man or a woman, I'm a filman, and my pronoun is 'bilf'"? That's a pathetic cry for attention at best and low-spectrum schizophrenia at worst. 

I'm not say the world was a better place when we had to fight of plagues, famine, and rampaging conquerors, but I am saying that people were a lot less fucking retarded.

So continuing a conversation from one day to the next (the actual content of the conversation having shifted considerably in the interim) is the same as one person trumpeting the same things for years on end? 

I'm trying to keep my natural hostility in check, so I'll stop at saying that I'm not going to drop an actually engaging conversation (one of the few I actually get the chance to have, considering most of my colleagues are more concerned with discussing sexual exploits and the state of their favorite sports teams) because you don't feel like taking the effort required to move your fingers enough to scroll on past it.
