You mean like that thing in the movies where there's a guy at a steel door and they say "What's the password?"
Quest design with MMOs especially those with subscriptions are designed the way they are to waste your time. With millions of paid subcribers I doubt monetary issues are the reason why blizzard decided to make those types of quests, if they wanted them to be different they would. And from going through newer content I can say they're trying. But it's for me too little too late. Skipping through quest text is a reflex.
The problem with the guy at the door and his eye slot deal is that you have to draw me in. Because you have to inform me through some means on what I have to do. You can't drop anyone into any type of puzzle and expect them to succeed. Just as an example if I were to sit someone in front of the later levels of portal they'd have no idea of the games rule's and while with time I'm more than sure they could figure it out it would be long past the point of frustration.
It's pretty obvious to me that any MMO is trying to pull in WOW's audience. So, I'm of the opinion the first step is to remove quest text entirely. Rid themselves of the reflex. That is a monetary issue, VAs aren't cheap. At the very least not as cheap as generic reason to collect said bear asses would be to type up.
But the other issue is that how many unique quests can you have? Regardless of how good the voice acting is or engaging the world you build turns out to be people are still going to rush through. These are the people that are interested in endgame content. And if you spent all the money and dev time to the stuff leading up to it and there's nothing there that guy is going to go back to WOW. And then your subscription based business model is fucked. That guy is the person you have to sell your game to. He's the guy that will continue to play your game consistently.

Password? I think it more like going to a tavern and chatting up X, Y or the Bartender, doing an actual conversation to see if they have a quest. Mention [KEYWORD] and they will give you one, and have the chat actually plot-relevant rather than fluff.

SK, it sounds like you want to have an RPG. Not an MMO. I think that was my mistake with what I had typed out. I think needlessly turning an RPG into an MMO just so you could have a multiplayer aspect is probably one of the bigger wastes of money you could do as a game company.
Instead of messing with quest systems in MMO's to make them more like RPGS it'd be simpler to take desirable aspects from those games and work them into an RPG.

MMORPG
And why cant we have an engaging multiplayer experience? From every MMORPG I have ever tried so far it is more or less the writers trying to shovel a one-player experience on a multiplayer scale. Look at ESO, for a recent example. It is very hard to be engaged in the world when an NPC says that you were the one they have been waiting on to save them, only to look behind you and see a conga line of other players waiting for their turn to talk to the same NPC.
In an ideal MMO, most of the experiences would be run by players. There would be player DMs for scenarios, player merchants to control the market, and a more engaging world. Like say there was a set of magical artifacts that granted vast powers. Only a certain number of players will be able to own them at any given time, and other players will be able to take it from them by force or other means. If a player with the artifact doesn't log in for a certain expansion of time, the artifact teleports to a new location in the world. If the player knew they were going to be offline for that long, then they would have to ensure someone else would be taking care of the artifact. That opens up more social choices. Or some prison-based MMORPG where there are certain players that start off as "wardens" and take care of a block of other players. Too bad that there would have to be coutnermeasures to ensure that the system doesn't get abused.

Thanks guys!
So lately I have been on a Pokemon binge, trying to complete the pokedex. I have to say I am doing pretty damn good. Out of the 719 (if you include Diancie, which I do because I managed to get one) Pokemon, I have seen 682 and obtained 649. I can almost smell that Shiny Charm.
I am also pretty sure I have ALL of the legendaries so that means now it is up to me breeding and evolving Pokemon, the GTS, /r/Pokemontrades, and maybe a friend or two to get this shit done.

Mister Frost wrote:Katt, I really don't think we can blame crazy peoples' relationships on the trends in porn. I can't speak for you, but I don't actually define my life or my way of thinking around porn. In fact, you'll actually notice that almost everyone here is capable of talking about things other than porn, and I'm talking to the only exception. I fire up the porn when I'm lookin' to get m' noodle wet without any pesky bullshit like human contact--other than that, I do crazy things like "work" and "hobbies" and "have something resembling a life."
Also, it's been about a year since I've comprehended your fucking similes.
- also:
I can honestly just say that I've noticed a trend in that people with common sense aren't latched onto the porn norms or social stereotypes. Like, almost literally. Whenever I run into a narrow minded fucktard, they're always a huge bigot that can't be reasoned with. Always considering themselves right. While people that aren't "sheeple" can actually form coherent sentences, and, usually make valid arguments for things they have. But that aside, I have met quite a lot that can think, yet have been influenced by porn, in terms of what they consider "normal". And trailing off a bit, but likely is due to my drastically dropped overall health and life quality over the past few days (might try to correct that if I can be bothered), but had a little hard making out what you were on about. Where you complaining on that as of late, I've almost always been referring to porn, or an overall issue the story has or? If so, can say I'm only really doing it to the excess due to people generally treating it, and other valid topics I bring up at other sites (like how it's really bs it's accepted that an artist can charge 400 an hour for drawing a female character, when people only have to pay 15 an hour if they want a male character) in the same way many irl treat bullying: getting mad on the one to bring it up, because it now means they have to pay attention to it, along with it making it look bad, when it's much easier to just ignore it and tell the ones it affect to just shut up and let the rest be happy. Isn't it great how far we've gotten with the scapegoat society? So many still insisting we need to make certain groups or people suffer just to let the other ones live better. Usually to not have to deal with some other societal flaw, just brushing it over nice and messy.
And; "My fucking similies"?
@Tytan: Not sure I'd trust google translate that much tbh... but maybe. And while I am generally against "medicine", honestly been pondering on getting some sort of sleeping aid. I shouldn't get violent mood swings post period. Not to mention I sleep badly as it is.
@Downloaded: Not everything, but large chunks. And the fact people take a piss on, and don't give a shit about technically huge areas of those, while blatantly and constantly glorifying one set of specific things in it, does tick me off about it. Especially with the whole bs entitlement those on the majority side have. With all the subtlety of a racist slave owner smugly bragging about "This is how things are, you just have to fall in line and accept it" while throwing violent hissy its if they're ever questioned by anyone. And no, it generally doesn't give a fuck about individuality or personal experience. You either have to fit the bill, or be an outcast. So yeah, it's a rather terrible place to be in. As, just like any of the old slave societies, anyone not a slave, and at least in the "norm/middle class", didn't see anything wrong with it. As life is generally good, and they get all they need. To them, it's just a nuisance to have someone bring up a problem that doesn't affect them.
@EP: Hm... finishing my two latest RP characters, along with glancing a bit on the later ones, in short terms, noticing they've gradually become more and more "renegade" is a bit worrying to me... ah well, onwards parasitic PSI mutant vaguely based of Chrysalis. Time to drain their life essence as we slit some throats! *Squee*
@Lateral: Merry birthday. And I technically got all pokemon for a shiny charm :3 Just need to get a pokebank and transfer the last like, 30-50.
I still got super multi battles I need to do... but after that, I've beaten/completed pokemon.

1. When you try and liken one situation (usually your situation) to another situation, usually to try and make it easier to understand.
The problem is that your similes:
A. Are terrible.
B. Make no sense.
C. Are confusing.
D. All of the above.
2. Just try it, honestly if it doesn't work we probably won't be able to tell.
Also, the fuck? I didn't even mention medicine, not even in passing.

Watching EC commentary on video games for education makes me think of how horrible and outdated the education system in America is. Problem was that there are too many students for teachers to focus on, and a lot of students can get discouraged.

Re: [Official!] Project Horizons Comment Crew Chat thread.
Katt my primary problem with your original post is that your outlook depends on people being interchangeable and that when they are exposed to values that are "dominant" that they accept those values as truth and act accordingly. I believe that this is incorrect and somewhat lazy. People aren't 100% predictable and their personality and personal experiences influence how they perceive and react to various situation and other philosophies. To discount personal experiences and individuality when talking about people is foolhardy because different people are naturally inclined to do different things for different reasons and they aren't perfect results of their environment. You can't throw away all the nuance of a situation to narrow it down to a simple answer, life isn't as simple as "X always leads to Y". You can't just focus on the big overarching influence without accounting for the nitty gritty details that also influence people.
For example I'm going to adopt that viewpoint that "inherited wealth causes children to become wasteful and hedonistic" and it would be very easy for me to point at examples like Paris Hilton to validate it. However this outlooks fails when I look at the children of Warren Buffet who, despite having significant amounts of money, live relatively humble lives seeking their passions in business, music, and philanthropy. These blanket statements just don't work because it discounts the myriad of other influences, like friends, family, and personal philosophy, that cause people to act a certain way.
Lets go back to the example of Scyto's friend's girlfriend. There are a variety of other plausible explanations for why she acted that way. She could have been under a lot of stress and lashed out, she could have gotten overly comfortable with her boyfriend and thought she could get away with anything thinking he wouldn't leave, she could be abusive and manipulative because her family was abusive and manipulative to her, or she could have just been crazy. There are other things than "porn norms" that influence people, but the important thing is I don't know her and neither do you. It would insincere to sit here and practice armchair psychology and "determine" the "true cause" of her actions because we don't know her. We don't know her circumstances, we don't know her life, we don't know the first thing about her other than she did things which were wrong. As a result we can't go and ascribe "motives" to her. As a result picking a random motive out of a hat would be just as effective.
I want to come back to the nature of individuality and how it interacts with your outlook. I think there is an incongruity. If individuality and personal experiences don't mean anything and people tend to adopt dominant views, how can there be outcasts or dissenters in that society? Wouldn't that society be a homogenous, culturally stagnant mess that doesn't change? After all if things are "right" why change them? And if personal experiences and individuality don't matter then why are you fighting against a culture you deem wrong? If individuality and personal experiences don't matter then shouldn't you agree with the dominant culture? If individuality and personal experiences mean nothing then that means your individuality and personal experiences mean nothing, you can't make a blanket statement then exempt yourself from it. After all you are a person and, if what you say is true people tend to accept the dominant opinion no matter what, doesn't the fact you find the dominant culture wrong disprove your entire outlook?

FRAGO. No overnight. Range today and tomorrow.
Also, weapons draw at this company takes about 15 minutes. Happens at about 0915. Infantry ain't about that 0300 shit, man. We're badasses from 0900 to 1700. Outside that, you're on your own.
That's why Joshua hit up God to stop the sun and shit, too. It was 1650 and the motherfuckers were about to bounce, "ongoing battle" be damned. That's why they went on to slaughter their enemies--they were fuckin' pissed. It was 1705 and they were still sober; which is pretty much universal shorthand for "shit's FUBAR"

Because it gives a very inconsistent experience. You either have to pay someone to sit in a town with a bag full of rewards which if you have one of these guys in every server and every town it's going to get expensive. And would be severly annoying because you have dozens of people running around a town saying "Do you have a quest?". But you're talking about player run. See I can tell you and the others are having a good time in meadow's ford, but I have had some terrible GM experiences.
Ones where the GM creates an unfair situation, favors their friends over other players and ones where the GM gets tired or loses interest. Which really sucks because you sunk time into it and there's really not much to show for it. I understand and I'm sympathetic to those situations. It's really difficult to say no to your friends and if I got tired of it I could walk away, so the GM should be able to as well. But this in a video game? I believe the bad experiences would outweigh the good. This isn't a group of friends sitting around a table it's strangers over the internet trying to figure out what cooperation means.
And to my understanding ESO isn't having that good of a time at the moment with subscriptions. Gameplay business models need to line up in a way in MMOs that doesn't happen in anyother game.
What you're suggesting to me seems as likely as community made MMOs forming on DayZ servers and I don't see that happening anytime. As for player run markets? I'm sorry but I really can't see that as anything but players sticking it to other players.
What I think you want is not an MMO again. I think you want an RPG with multiplayer aspects. Or maybe just an evolution of the D20 site. Where a friend can create scenarios for you to play through. But I really don't think you want what you're suggesting, I can't see a world in which the company gives a player control over strangers being anything related to fun to those strangers.

I still got super multi battles I need to do... but after that, I've beaten/completed pokemon.
How'd you get Volcanion and Hoopa? Also if you happen to have a spare Shaymin I've got a few event legendaries if you wanna work out a trade.

I was referring to the fact that you are always either talking about "porn norms" as if trends in porn (a medium that most people will avoid bringing up and act like they don't watch, even though it's known that the vast majority do) have major effects on society besides a slightly unrealistic expectation of sex (that'll usually be solved by the first time you actually have it) or you're talking about Project Horizons and how Stygius and Blackjack having sex (and how Blackjack showed consideration to her partner and managed to enjoy it despite it being Stygius' first time) ruined the story forever.Kattlarv wrote:
I don't think that people are generally treating it and other valid topics you bring up at other sites as an issue that they now have to take seriously, and thus dislike it. Personally, I remember discussing this at length with you (and coming to an understanding and acknowledging that we agreed on some points and disagreed on a few) before I enlisted.Kattlarv wrote:If so, can say I'm only really doing it to the excess due to people generally treating it, and other valid topics I bring up at other sites (like how it's really bs it's accepted that an artist can charge 400 an hour for drawing a female character, when people only have to pay 15 an hour if they want a male character) in the same way many irl treat bullying: getting mad on the one to bring it up, because it now means they have to pay attention to it, along with it making it look bad, when it's much easier to just ignore it and tell the ones it affect to just shut up and let the rest be happy.
That was about 10 months ago. The fact that the exact same issues are still being brought up in the exact same manner indicates that everyone's frustration is more because it's still being brought up, after everyone else has hashed out this issue and come to an understanding to move the fuck on.
Given that I'm in the profession of making people (Those threatening Americans) suffer to let the other ones (Americans) live better, I don't think I'm the right person to ask this question.Kattlarv wrote:Isn't it great how far we've gotten with the scapegoat society? So many still insisting we need to make certain groups or people suffer just to let the other ones live better. Usually to not have to deal with some other societal flaw, just brushing it over nice and messy.
Kattlarv wrote:And; "My fucking similies"?
Similes. Basically metaphors but you use "like" or "as" or similar connecting words. The Similes that you use are, to be honest, utterly nonsensical and tend to have little to no connection with the issue at hand at all, by any stretch of the imagination. It doesn't help that you tend to make some of them deliberately devoid of sense to illustrate that something is devoid of sense, rather than saying "This doesn't make sense, and here's why" like everyone else.
