Re: [Official!] Project Horizons Comment Crew Chat thread.
Found this tidbit in my Facebook feed.
95 years ago today, 7.5 million liters of molasses from a ruptured storage facility was released through the streets of Boston in a 7.5 meter high, 50 meter wide tidal wave traveling over thirty five miles an hour. After which, it turned into the same sticky, slow-moving mess most of us know, and turned the harbor brown until the summer. 21 people died and over 150 were injured.

Got around to playing something I've picked up during the Steam sale, it's called Gas Guzzlers Extreme.
It's a racing game with guns. It's extremely fun.

Haha, oh man, dat brutal death metal growl. I shouldn't laugh, I think it's pretty well done, but they mixed it so loud and have such hifi production that it just sounds hilarious when coupled with that totally incomprehensible style of growling.Ironmonger wrote:

I admittedly smirked a bit when I heard the over-the-top-ness of the death growl, but I was too entranced by the instrumentals. Pretty smooth stuff, in my opinion.
Honestly, what prompted me to dig into Iron Maiden's stuff was the fact that I'm tracking over 100 bands now, and I figure that I better get to know my music before I get any crazier.

@Iron
Ayuh, they've got good technical skills. Like I said, I'm not a big fan of the mixing or whatever, but they can play decently.
I figure there's gotta be a website out there that lets you track band releases automatically, right? They might not have smaller bands in their registries, of course, which'd suck... I dunno, I usually just check in with my favorite bands every now and then when they come up in my master playlist, and I check gunshyassassin or some other blog for new releases of things I might have forgotten about (like Behemoth's new one - 18 days, and I'm surprisingly hyped for it). It helps that most of the bands I really like seem to have horrible delays between albums, I suppose. Agalloch takes like four years, usually. Bleh.

Re: [Official!] Project Horizons Comment Crew Chat thread.
Some of my other friends and I were tossing around ideas in case we form a band, and it's been decided that I'm doing vocals. I did a demo for one of them, and he was blown away by it, going as far as saying that I should be on tour. Granted, anything could happen during the time it takes me to actually learn the 8-string, but it never hurts to plan.
On another note, has anyone heard any bands who use a lot of odd instruments? I've been trying to find ways to implement new electronic instruments into metal, such as the electric violin, and I was just wondering if there are any real-world examples.

Odd instruments? How about own voice? :D
And as for violins, there are some (I know it's not violins)
But can you image someone headbanging, while playing cello?

Well, Botanist at least used to do hammered dulcimer black metal, Agalloch uses a deer skull as percussion occasionally as well as the odd violin (or other traditional stringed instrument), and the current Mayhem singer does Tuvan throat singing (among other very weird things). Basically, the trick with non-traditional instruments is usually to not make it overpower the rest of the song (AKA the guitars). Keep it metal, and it won't be seen as a shtick. (For the record, Botanist was a shtick =P)

As for violins, many folk-metal or rock bands youse them. Mostly Irish and Finnish, I guess.
Korpiklaani for example.

@Katarn
>Fanboy squeal
I've actually been thinking of incorporating the electric cello since it has a heavier sound to it.
@Cobalt
I planned from the beginning to have the odd instruments take a back-seat to the guitars. What I have in mind is closer to Melodeath than anything, and I figured that electric versions of traditional instruments might reinforce the "melodic" part.
EDIT: I may be confusing symphonic and melodic, or just mixing them.

It's on hiatus right now and is still at only chapter 34; the reason given was that it's being made into a audio play instead and that it's taking a really damn long time for them to catch up all that way. Apparently it's still being worked on.Ironmonger wrote:cb5 wrote:

That outright aggravates me. Some people take in information better when they read it rather than hear it, and I am one such person. I have a significant amount of trouble paying attention to and remembering voices, so the conversion to audio really makes things difficult for me.
