Fear and pain are natural defences to assist us in making decisions to prevent mortal harm, as unpleasant as they are. Most animals have fear, and we should fear most of all because we can understand true dangers.
The bloody pack mentality just makes everything worse in those situations. See it everyday, same people, same targets.Harmony Ltd. wrote:And pass the occasion to feel superior to someone and act like a bully with the implicit moral support of your social circle and the people around you ? I totally agree fear and pain are natural and help make use avoid decisions that would otherwise kill us. Like if someone is afraid of chainsaws that's totally reasonable, cause the danger it presents.Ketchup wrote:Fear and pain are natural defences to assist us in making decisions to prevent mortal harm, as unpleasant as they are. The sad thing is a lot of people try to drown out their fear and pain rather than deal with it. A personal example is my grandma. She never once in her life felt pain, was born with a silverspoon in her mouth, never saw anyone die ever and never once was given a reason to fear death then one day great-grandma died and she was presented with her own mortality and all the fear of dying most people learn to cope with during their life came crashing down on her all at once. Short version of what happened: She's in a mental hospital now.

I don't think her not dealing with mortality and her mental health are related.cb5 wrote:The sad thing is a lot of people try to drown out their fear and pain rather than deal with it. She started popping pain pills and anti-depressants like louis popping pills in lfd2. The short version is the amount she was taking really screwed up her brain. We still don't know how she got a hold of prescription medication without a prescription for the pills.Scyto Harmony wrote:I don't her not dealing with mortality and her mental health are related.cb5 wrote:The sad thing is a lot of people try to drown out their fear and pain rather than deal with it. Isn't New Vegas pretty much Van Buren, canon-wise? I know that a lot of stuff got carried over (Caesar's Legion vs. NCR, Hoover Dam, etc.)Moodyman90 wrote:Much better. At least that's what the Fallout TV Tropes said. Same goes for the canceled Van Buren. While a lot of the planned story bits was put into New Vegas, broad versions of what happened there did happened.

I'm not saying that's not the trigger, but people don't 'develop' most mental conditions. Especially not mental conditions like that. It was probably underlying and untriggered until then.cb5 wrote:She started popping pain pills and anti-depressants like louis popping pills in lfd2. Ouch. My grandmother used to prescribe herself all kinds of crazy shit (she was a pharmacist), and we think that's what gave her cancer in the end.cb5 wrote:She started popping pain pills and anti-depressants like louis popping pills in lfd2. @ Scienza : Lots of stuff got carried over, but no.
For starter, IIRC, the endgame of Van Buren involved the player character having a direct hand in provoking a new Holocaust - the VB developers were IIRC thinking that the setting, now starting to seriously rebuild, was moving too far away from the Post-Apocalyptic theme / aesthetic, and wanted to "reset" the counter for the next game.
IIRC, what would have happened was that the big bad would have used an orbital nuke launching facility for some reason, and after defeating said big bad (a rogue hyper-intelligent NCR officer), the only thing the player could do was change the targeting data of the missiles as they were about to launch.
Though the saving grace of Van Buren was that the aforementioned endgame would have taken place in a space station on orbit.

Well, gents, it's happened again - I'm on a weird sleep schedule. Waking up at like 7 AM, going to sleep at like 9 or 10 at night. :| Gross.
@Harmony
Sounds like Van Buren was a fan of getting Fallout back to the roots of navigating a hostile radioactive wasteland, which sounds like a fun time.

The pills she was taking damaged her neural pathways cause of the quantity she was taking and what sorts of pills she was taking and that a lot of them counteracted each other. Did some looking, I swear it's changed since last I looked but it looks like the events of Van Buren are mostly non-canon. A lot of elements from it was moved to 3 and New Vegas plus their DLC. Seems like the only thing that was slatted to be in Van Buren that didn't really get shown except the aftermath was the NCR- B.o.S. War.Scienza wrote:Isn't New Vegas pretty much Van Buren, canon-wise? I know that a lot of stuff got carried over (Caesar's Legion vs. NCR, Hoover Dam, etc.)Moodyman90 wrote:Much better. That said, I got confused cause for whatever reason the Fallout Timeline has events from Van Buren in them. It's an interesting read. It seems that the playable portion of Van Buren happens five years before Fallout 3 begins, as in before the Player Character is born.

i recently learned of a fallout 3 reference in the elder scrolls 5 skyrim. so in fallout 3 an old lady gives you a sweetroll and some jerk kid(butch?) steals it from you, then in skyrim, some guards say "let me guess, someone stole your sweet roll. i dont know how much (if any) of an easter egg this is. but its the little things in life that count(this one doesnt matter but meh.). anybody else know any video game references in other video games?

It's also noted before a number of Van Buren elements on the timeline "not confirmed as canon"

You're close, but not quite. Sweetrolls are a running gag in Bethesda games mainly that of the Elder Scrolls series, so when they got the rights to make Fallout 3 they put the sweetroll joke in there in reference to their other games.
@ Harmony. Like I said, that's why I got confused. Personally it doesn't make sense to me to include parts not considered as canon, but they did.

That's one of the more obvious ones, but Bethesda games are usually full of easter eggs and in-jokes. If you turn on Wild Wasteland, New Vegas is pretty much all pop-culture references.brony all alone wrote:i recently learned of a fallout 3 reference in the elder scrolls 5 skyrim. so in fallout 3 an old lady gives you a sweetroll and some jerk kid(butch?) steals it from you, then in skyrim, some guards say "let me guess, someone stole your sweet roll. i dont know how much (if any) of an easter egg this is. but its the little things in life that count(this one doesnt matter but meh.). anybody else know any video game references in other video games?
While it's not a reference per se, I love the crap out of the Tupari vending machine in Mass Effect 2.

That's the beauty of vending machines. They're very willing to sell specific internal organs to you, at semireasonable prices. Just don't try to tip them over.Mister Frost wrote:An odd quote. Or doesn't consider the consequences of not faking it. For instance, many folks are still willing to help me financially and physically even though they're not technically legally obligated to (having reached legal adulthood) precisely because they've only ever seen me being polite and respectful and have never seen me being...me, and I'm perfectly fine with that state of affairs.swicked wrote:...and isn't willing to fake it.Harmony Ltd. wrote:ITT we learn CBf1ve has no empathy
