IIRC, you're stuck in the same boat as me, Hinds: having a laptop with a intel HD 3000 integrated "graphics card", d3d9 doesn't help for me, all it does it load a little more before crashing. I'm just saving up for a better computer...O. Hinds wrote:I've tried that. I've tried all sorts of things. I've tried different combinations inumthreads editing and different version of d3d9. I think many consider it similar to the Harry Potter epilogue: fucking stupid but technically canon, though you could ignore it and probably no one would care.cb5 wrote:I have a random ass question. Is the epilogue to FoE canon?

Actually speaking of which harry potter is getting a sequel. Personally I like to think of the FoE epilogue as canon, cause if the original writer says it's canon then it's canon. Like I could claim harry potter's epilogue isn't canon all I want, but if J K Rowling says it's canon then it's canon.stringtheory wrote:I think many consider it similar to the Harry Potter epilogue: fucking stupid but technically canon, though you could ignore it and probably no one would care.cb5 wrote:I have a random ass question. At this point, I have to wonder whether you paid attention to the rather grim plotline and themes concerning rape, slavery, drug abuse, insanity and the darkness within all men, or if you were too busy hunting down the features that were meant to be entirely secondary little Easter eggsbrony all alone wrote:you wanna know how long it took me to get all:relics, letters, memory cards, craftable items, guns, attachments, camos for FC3. i just got my last flamethrower fuel upgrade on wednesday. making me have EVERYTHING. ask me about ANYTHING far cry 3 related. anyone is free to ask.

Yes, he is. Actually, the new harry potter movie is a prequel set 70 years earlier, but anyway ever heard of Fanon Discontinuity? Apparently much of the HP fanbase subscribes to it in regards to the epilogue, but then again the majority of the HP fanbase is fucking stupid, being teenaged girls.cb5 wrote:Actually speaking of which harry potter is getting a sequel. I have seen some Black Butler, read the anime for a while it's... good. But I don't know if you'll like it. While it doesn't have much of the failings of most Anime, it still... I don't how to say... It's still an Anime. It still has a few Anime tropes and such. But It's good enough that I'd say yeah, you might like it.Mister Frost wrote:I've heard a lot about FAB (Fabulous Ass Buddies) and I'll probably get to it at some point in the near future. I'll look into Steins;Gate, as well.Scyto Harmony wrote:To answer a far earlier thing you said Frost, if you want non-standard Anime that's regarded as excellent, I'd suggest Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood (If you haven't already seen it) and Steins;Gate. Although, Steins;Gate is a slow start. The first 10 or so episodes are pretty interesting, but they're not godlike. But after that point it becomes super interesting.
Any familiarity with Black Butler? Is there reason to watch it beyond the homoeroticism? (Which, honestly, is reason enough for me)
Edit: And sorry it took my so long to reply, my family's bitching and complaining "Scyto, you're an introvert" and "Scyto, why don't you get a job" and "Scyto, I'm not 100% sure you're not a sociopath".

Thanks for the advise. And don't worry about it. Regarding the latter issue, you can just do what I did and remove any ambiguity whatsoever from the equation (not ten minutes hence, my mom called me a "sick bastard" in the middle of the dollar store)Scyto Harmony wrote:I have seen some Black Butler, read the anime for a while it's... good. I hope you realize that he does these things because he is a bad person who is not to be admired. By blood volume, he's about half amphetamines and a third psychotropics. He takes slaves, tortures, and rapes for fun. He deliberately keeps similarly psychotic, rape-mongering pirates on hand as his personal army (his right-hand man keeps Jason's (male) best friend as a sex slave for an indeterminate period of time).brony all alone wrote:nah its cuz hes a badass. plain and simple. to sum up his best times he: kills your bro. pushes cinderblock tied to you off cliff, shoots you,and stabs you. and if you pay attention, when you t you kill him, his "dead" corpses eyes quickly glance up and stare at you. hes one crazy dude. does anybody have skype??
Furthermore, his "badassery" is largely driven and constrained by the plot. In every appearance but his very first, he would have been mercilessly and efficiently killed by the player the instant he appeared, had the game not wrested control away--fitting, story-wise, if frustrating gameplay-wise, but still worth considering.

They most certainly can. Valve's story-driven games tend to be extremely linear, with no choice or free-roaming for the player at all. This allows them to focus on keeping the story tight, the characters well-written, and the levels themselves atmospheric and well-balanced. Linearity trades freedom and (to a degree) immersion with polish and focus. It can be done well, and it can make a great game. It's a valid method. It's just not Fallout, and it has no place in a Fallout game.

Which, as mentioned, is a perfectly fine way to make a game; not inherently better or worse than making it open-world. Considering that the aforementioned interactivity that separates it from a visual novel is, in practice, the mechanics of fun, classic games that each have their own considerable fanbases and have spawned spinoffs focused on in-depth use of those mechanics, it's fairly obvious that linearity isn't an automatic narrative when done well.swicked wrote:Agreed.
It's just a bit more interactive a visual novel, really.
Most games drift toward a linear story, anyway.
My main gripe with Fallout 3 is that it had all the shortcomings of an open-world game (less in-depth storyline(s), comparatively less fleshed-out characters, dedication to game balance) and all the shortcomings of a linear game (shorter playtime, few choices, lack of immersion) all wrapped up in the dressing of Fallout's flaws (clunky, ill-polished combat and excessively equation- and numbers-based outcomes that kill any organic feel the game might have had)

Anyone familiar with Black Butler? From what I've heard, it'll provide my recommended dose of labyrinthine scheming and homoeroticism

Wait, Wait. I wasn't paying attention. What problems do people have with the HP epilogue? Because, as terrible as a feel for saying this, I've read each book more than 5 times each (The fourth one, my favourite, I've read 13 times and counting) and I consider myself a HUGE HP fan. And I can't imagine what problem people have with the epilogue.
And I realize it was probably mentioned earlier in this conversation, but I don't care enough to try and find it.

Vaas is sort of a symbolic character. He's basically the end result of what happens when humanity succumbs to its savage, hedonistic, and ruthless nature. You guys have been busy, Kim isn't gonna like all of these new pages haha.
I really don't have anything to add to any of this. Personally I liked New Vegas more than FO3 cause I could immerse myself in it more. I was okay with 3, certainly wasn't a bad game, but after New Vegas it felt less. Not meant to be a crack at it, and i certainly sunk more time into 3 than most other games as well.
Anyways, for those interested and as a reminder, tonight is Team Fortress 2 night for the Steam group. Open to all provided we find a server with room.
