Alright, as part of my efforts to branch out a little and hate the Japanese less, I'll take a look at some other anime/mangas that I've heard were pretty good. I'm already on Volume 9 of Berserk, and it's filling my holes when it comes to some good, old-fashioned giant-sword-swinging punch-a-demon-in-the-face violence and cosmic horror, but I'll give that a rest for the moment.
Anyone familiar with Black Butler? From what I've heard, it'll provide my recommended dose of labyrinthine scheming and homoeroticism

Fallout is a series of post-apocalyptic RPGs set in a quasi-dieselpunk alternate America. The series is renowned for its black humor which blends well with the overall depressing grimness of the setting. The game has been developed by Black Isle Studios (1 and 2), followed by Bethesda Softworks (3), and Obsidian Entertainment (New Vegas),brony all alone wrote:quick question. what is fallout? i know its a game but whats it about? who made it?

Re: [Official!] Project Horizons Comment Crew Chat thread.
It's an RPG series (originally turn-based isometric, later first/third-person real-time) produced by several companies over its lifetime. It is, fittingly enough, a game about a post-apocalyptic world built from the science fiction of the 1950's. It's more well-developed than your typical post-apocalyptic-based fiction, featuring intricate stories of plots and conspiracies stretching back to before the Great War. There's a great deal of surrealism and magical realism involved, and the character customization, world-building, and extensive quests are very in depth in all games in the franchise.

Think of it as Skyrim, but darker and with much smarter writing. And without that goddamn awful leveling system.brony all alone wrote:all i heard was RPG, apocalyptic, aaaaaaand: BETHESDA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! that settles it im getting it. skyrim was boss. quick question: is it openworld? 1st or 3rd person?
The first ones were isometric, but 3 and New Vegas are first-person.

To keep my rant short, I despise the Skyrim leveling system. Literally the only way to level up is to grind or just pay someone to level you. That's not good game design, that's pointlessly padding gameplay time.brony all alone wrote:i for one enjoy the leveling systems. so the game aint too easy. oblivion was freakin HARD. skyrim, im on legendary difficulty and it still easy. what else can i do but game? im a vampire. not skyrim but real life. i gottta feed and keep low also
You want to see hard? Play through the Dead Money DLC for New Vegas on Hardcore Mode. You will cry.
Oh, and Fallout 3 is a bitch to get working on Windows 7.

Personally I like Fallout 3 more than new vegas mainly cause new vegas it was way to easy to fuck up the ending you were going for. The story telling was definitely better in fallout 3. Fallout new vegas' gameplay was pretty good, just the story telling was the problem.Scienza wrote:Aye. Regarding the 3/NV debate: I've still not been able to get 3 running, but, while I'd still like to play it, New Vegas is, from what I've heard, better anyway. I'm not sure how well NV compares to 1 and 2, though; there are enough differences between them that a comparison becomes difficult.

That's actually what's happening in the alternate universe the RPG I'm running is set in (the first part, that is, not the second). The Swarm was created by Luna in her mad scientist phase shortly before she went NMM; a big PoD was Chrysalis deciding either to keep the Swarm and remain its dictatorial queen (eventually leading, I was thinking, to the events of the show; now I've got this new interpretation of those events, but, well, that's not the universe I'm working in anyway) or spread around intelligence and, to an extent, free will. This, as opposed to a bunch of yeslings, lead to the significantly more effective Hive, which has been busy working its way into Equestria's government for well over half a century now. The Royal Wedding never happened because the Hive's current plan is working quite well, if slowly. Shapeshifter-detecting technology exists by this point (show+25 years), but, well, guess who had some holey hooves in its development? And if your "perfect" changeling detector fails to mark somepony as a changeling, then they must not be a changeling. The Hive has also, through rumors, sightings, good stealth, and the occasional encouragement of conspiracy theorists, managed to create a general public misconception that changelings are either extinct or fictional, and those who do know the "truth" believe changelings to be weak, not very bright, disorganized, and rare.
As for the Sunglasses of Discord idea… interesting. Discord's not been released since his escape in this universe, but there are a few relics left around (including his daughter)… Hm. Something to keep in mind; thanks. Of course, if you tried to fight the changelings openly, you'd find the Equestrian bureaucracy and citizenry moving oddly quickly to spirit you away to a padded cell and whisk the glasses away to who knows where. :)
- Spoiler:
The bit about the glasses was more a reference to the old cult-classic Sci-Fi They Live, directed by the maestro John Carpenter himself. Not sure if you're familiar.
That RP sounds like it'd be something interesting to follow, though. Are the players currently dealing with the Swarm right now, or is that something for future events? If it does come in future events, then you've got some lucky players--I absolutely love the sneaky subterfuge-type stuff. I'm currently on the hunt for solidly-done stealth games, as always.
- Spoiler:
- Ah, no, I'm not familiar with that. It still sounds like something that Discord would do, though.
Both the players and characters have not idea, as far as I know, that any of this exists. At first, it was just me really liking worldbuilding (see the headcanon thread). There is a changeling agent currently working with/manipulating them, though… and one of the players decided to have their PC fall in love with said agent, who'd been living off field rations or love.
I'm not planning for the party and the Hive to ever come into conflict; among other things, I don't see how the party could win. One of the characters may end up being inducted into the Hive, though (a rare but possible thing; while the changelings can transform ponies into changelings, they consider the vast majority of ponies unworthy of it).
This is also the first RPG I've ever run (I'm actually only running it because, after our group's previous non-pony campaign, the GM for that one really wanted to play in but not run a pony campaign).

Not really. The long time fans and more hardcore fans of fallout didn't really like new vegas that much. The problem people had with it and why it's not as popular is the same reason what I said, the story telling in new vegas isn't as good as fallout 3. The combat and that is actually improved a bit, but for people that want to play for the story we were sorely disappointed in the direction they took.O. Re: [Official!] Project Horizons Comment Crew Chat thread.
I think we've talked about this before, but New Vegas has better writing and storytelling. It's factions are much more complex and nuanced than 3's, where there were only the Brotherhood of Steel (who save virgins and defend puppies) and the Enclave (who killed your dad and want to poison everything.) New Vegas had no definite "good guys" and "bad guys", it just had choices that fell on the sliding scale of idealism vs. cynicism. The idealists (NCR and Independent), are at best ineffective, and at worst, destructive, with the former hopelessly bloated and mired in bureaucracy and corruption, the latter a bloody free-for-all that undoes everything any other groups hope to accomplish. Alternately, the cynics (House and Legion) are monsters willing to do whatever it takes to seize power, and are at the same time some of the most likely to establish order in the region. The choice between these four factions, falling in different corners of the alignment chart yet none being ultimately preferable, is what makes New Vegas' main quest much more interesting.cb5 wrote:Personally I like Fallout 3 more than new vegas mainly cause new vegas it was way to easy to fuck up the ending you were going for. Also, the karma system is ridiculously broken, and so I'm incredibly happy that they de-emphasized it in NV.

Um, no, fans were actually more disappointed with Fallout 3. It's writing was wildly inconsistent with previous games, and was really kinda only a conflict between the ridiculous over-the-top evil and the obvious good.cb5 wrote:Not really. I know it's a opinion, I was just saying that the story telling in new vegas was the definite drawback to the game though. You gotta agree with the dlc and the ability to nuke the entire ncr or such and how it doesn't effect the mojave is ridiculous.
Firstly, Lonesome Road is meant to be end-game DLC. It doesn't affect the Mojave because at that point, the player is meant to be done. Secondly, the NCR is in California. When you take into account the fact that the the in-universe US severely scaled down the yields of their nuclear weapons, you end up with a lot of destruction but nothing nearly approaching what you're picturing.I know it's a opinion, I was just saying that the story telling in new vegas was the definite drawback to the game though. You gotta agree with the dlc and the ability to nuke the entire ncr or such and how it doesn't effect the mojave is ridiculous.
And finally, Old World Blues. If you try to tell me that Old World Blues was bad, I actually have the legal right to destroy your soul.

@Hinds I apologize in advance for this post's brevity, but I'm stuck on my phone at the moment.
- Spoiler:
- It's definitely worth checking out. John Carpenter's a master of the craft, and one of my favorite movies, The Thing, is one of the three movies considered his Magnum Opi (forgive atrocious Latin Grammar)
Concerning the Hive--are you familiar with the Animorphs book series, by K.A.Applegate? In short, body-hijacking aliens are infiltrating human society, and the heroes have to wage guerrilla warfare. The same concept, in principle, could be applied to players fighting The Hive. Again, this is just my preference speaking, but the sheer tension and required planning would, it seems, make a very fun quest line indeed, and a welcome change from the overwhelming force used in most roleplaying games.
Concerning the Headcanon thread, I apologize for not posting more. I chip in where I can, but many of the topics, such as missiles, are outside the scope of my knowledge base
