The sad thing is they'd be right, cause there's so many amputees from IED attacks that the DOD is looking at advancing prosthetic technology to help our veterans, and our air is pretty shitty in cities, and we're constantly so scared of getting murdered that some people always keep their gun on them just in case.Mister Frost wrote:Really? In that case, then I suppose future generations will look on us and say that if you were to go back in time, you'd end up getting blown up by an IED, or sick from pollution, or getting killed by a serial killer in some alley.
Wikipedia (as unreliable a source as it often is) even admits that many of those numbers may be (and likely are) exaggerated.
No one ever says that the 50's and 60's were a utopia. Most media nowadays, when it looks back on those times, tends to focus on the racism and the Vietnam War, respectively.
I don't know what rock you've been living under to think that people look back at previous generations as the paragons of virtue, or what issues exactly make you seem to hate the elderly so much, but at this point your posts are honestly more amusing than anything.
I don't hate the elderly, I hate their ideals and "virtues" that to this day poison society with lies of "traditional values". If you think it's wrong to hate ideals that say it's okay to harm people for being different then I don't want to be right.

@Frost
I mean, they might. Or maybe they'll look at us and think, my god, we were so horrible to trans people; or, my god, were we really so self-absorbed that we let mass atrocities happen across the globe over and over because we couldn't be bothered to stop them?; or, my god, we ATE DOLHPINS?! ("My aunt's married to a dolphin!")
It's hard to know what the future will find horrifying about the present, just like it was hard for those in the past to know how their future descendants would react. Gotta just keep on trying to do what's right, y'know?
Anyway, for the record, my one surviving grandparent is my grandma, and she has fond memories of living in what more or less amounted to a commune during the Great Depression. Her political leanings have not changed much, in this respect. =P

Fun fact: air quality is the best it's been in decades. You seem to think that every elderly person on Earth is some extremist conservative that is totally okay with aforementioned lobotomies, or lynching someone. In that case, I suppose every German in the 40's was a Jew-hunting Nazi and every Russian is an AK-waving, rape-mongering coward-shooting Red soldier.

There's a difference between hating a person and hating a ideal. To continue your analogy what you are saying is the equivalent of saying it's wrong to hate nazism. I'm not saying every elderly person is a extremist, rather my point in two words is "fuck eugenics". If hating eugenics is wrong then why should I want to be right?

This is the heart of the problem. All this demonizing of previous generations by people all around the internet (and around the world) is, at its heart, ego-stroking. Look how awesome we are just for not being those monsters back in the day.cb5 wrote:I don't hate the elderly, I hate their ideals and "virtues" that to this day poison society with lies of "traditional values". They may have fought for workers' rights, fought against Fascism overseas, and, in many cases, actually joined the Civil Rights Movement even if they were Caucasian (Yes, I know, hard to believe) then got hard at work building a nation that their descendants live in and enjoy to this day, but their views on homosexuality/transsexuality/environmentalism weren't the same as mine, so I'm their moral superior so long as I exert the modicum of mental effort it takes to stir up some righteous indignation. No actual working to solve the societal problems still hanging around to this day required, I've already won.

No. No, it's not. What I"m saying is that it's wrong to equate Germans with Nazism, or Russians with the Soviet Union. For all the accusations you're leveling against the previous generations, you're acting exactly like you think they do. "Those Niggers/Queers are ruining our country, raping our children, stealing our jobs, insert-evil-act-here, all because they're EVIL" has become "Those old folk are ruining our country. They killed anyone they didn't like, they poisoned the Earth, insert-evil-act-here, all because they're EVIL."cb5 wrote: To continue your analogy what you are saying is the equivalent of saying it's wrong to hate nazism.

And they were morally superior to the generation before them.
And the generations after us will be morally superior to us.
I think it's just a example of how human society advances at an alarming rate.

Re: [Official!] Project Horizons Comment Crew Chat thread.
There is, to be fair, a good deal of truth to that (Even the most "progressive" of nations throughout history have tended to endorse torture and slavery) but somehow the message of "We, on average, are more tolerant and egalitarian than our forefathers, on average, were" has gotten twisted to "Our forefathers were rabid, demon-possessed super-Nazis"Scyto Harmony wrote:I think we are morally superior to them.

Re: [Official!] Project Horizons Comment Crew Chat thread.
Guys, guys, let's chill da hay out. People in the past did some terrible things, and we shouldn't forget that or make them out to be paragons of truth, justice, and the American(/Canadian/Swedish/British/Russian/etc.) Way. And it wasn't just minorities - these were widespread ideals and popular programs, in many cases. Most cases, even.
At the same time, though, these things came to an end because there were good people rightly working against them. These are the people we should celebrate, and we do, some of them. We don't learn enough about the bad stuff we got up to, but we also don't learn enough about the people and movements that put an end to them. Modern civil rights exist because people made the intellectual foundations for them a long, long time ago. The struggle is not over, and it will not be over when we are finished with it either (and yes, I am bloody well working on this, thanks very much).
It's like... I can make fun of Descartes' dualism, because it's stupid and fallacious he should have known better, but I'm not throwing out Cartesian geometry when I do so. I can recognize that dualism was dumb, and that its dumbness continues to color people's thoughts to this day, but I also recognize that he did a lot of important stuff.

Was the dog in a fenced in yard? If so invisible/visible? How old was the couple? How big is your dog?
If the old guy thought your dog was going to knock over his wife or himself and cause them to break something I can see why he'd do it.
But if you have a little dog or there was a visible fence (or if you have one those stakes in the ground), then yeah they're assholes.

Small dog (Head comes up to mid shin), no fence, he never ever attacks/bites/growls only barks, I don't know how old they were I didn't actually see them.
- This is basically what my dog looks and sounds like. He's not exactly a threat.:

564,620,641.1 cookies per second. At this point, it's a game you leave running while you do other things, checking every now and then to see if there's a golden cookie/flesh cookie to click or if you have thirteen trillion cookies available for another time machine yet.Mister Frost wrote:I'm now producing over 50,000 cookies per second.Overlong Analysis Cobalt wrote:Hmm... my grandmas already do that, too, but I partially blame the hundred-odd portals to the evil cookie realm that I built for that.
