I don't know what rock you've been living under to think that people look back at previous generations as the paragons of virtue, or what issues exactly make you seem to hate the elderly so much, but at this point your posts are honestly more amusing than anything.

The sad thing is they'd be right, cause there's so many amputees from IED attacks that the DOD is looking at advancing prosthetic technology to help our veterans, and our air is pretty shitty in cities, and we're constantly so scared of getting murdered that some people always keep their gun on them just in case.

Anyway, for the record, my one surviving grandparent is my grandma, and she has fond memories of living in what more or less amounted to a commune during the Great Depression. Her political leanings have not changed much, in this respect. =P

There's a difference between hating a person and hating a ideal.  To continue your analogy what you are saying is the equivalent of saying it's wrong to hate nazism.  I'm not saying every elderly person is a extremist, rather my point in two words is "fuck eugenics". If hating eugenics is wrong then why should I want to be right?

This is the heart of the problem. All this demonizing of previous generations by people all around the internet (and around the world) is, at its heart, ego-stroking. Look how awesome we are just for not being those monsters back in the day. 

They may have fought for workers' rights, fought against Fascism overseas, and, in many cases, actually joined the Civil Rights Movement even if they were Caucasian (Yes, I know, hard to believe) then got hard at work building a nation that their descendants live in and enjoy to this day, but their views on homosexuality/transsexuality/environmentalism weren't the same as mine, so I'm their moral superior so long as I exert the modicum of mental effort it takes to stir up some righteous indignation. No actual working to solve the societal problems still hanging around to this day required, I've already won.

There is, to be fair, a good deal of truth to that (Even the most "progressive" of nations throughout history have tended to endorse torture and slavery) but somehow the message of "We, on average, are more tolerant and egalitarian than our forefathers, on average, were" has gotten twisted to "Our forefathers were rabid, demon-possessed super-Nazis"

Guys, guys, let's chill da hay out. People in the past did some terrible things, and we shouldn't forget that or make them out to be paragons of truth, justice, and the American(/Canadian/Swedish/British/Russian/etc.) Way. And it wasn't just minorities - these were widespread ideals and popular programs, in many cases. Most cases, even.

At the same time, though, these things came to an end because there were good people rightly working against them. These are the people we should celebrate, and we do, some of them. We don't learn enough about the bad stuff we got up to, but we also don't learn enough about the people and movements that put an end to them. Modern civil rights exist because people made the intellectual foundations for them a long, long time ago. The struggle is not over, and it will not be over when we are finished with it either (and yes, I am bloody well working on this, thanks very much).

It's like... I can make fun of Descartes' dualism, because it's stupid and fallacious he should have known better, but I'm not throwing out Cartesian geometry when I do so. I can recognize that dualism was dumb, and that its dumbness continues to color people's thoughts to this day, but I also recognize that he did a lot of important stuff.
