Re: [Official!] Project Horizons Comment Crew Chat thread.
I do have a serious question for people here. My ex-step-dad is going to visit next week. Well that's not it. Rather to make it blunt growing up I got metaphorically shat on by a ton of people like to the point I would rummage through trash and "recycle" things other people were throwing out. Like if I believed in god whatever deity it is would ban hammer the people from going to heaven for shitting on my life so hard. The thing is my ex-step-dad is the first recently is the first person to ever try and make up for it.
Like I've had people go, "Oh sorry" and never try to better themselves or ever realize how evil of a fucker they really are. There's a massive difference between someone realizing they did wrong and someone actually better themselves. You can cry all you want saying you're sorry to someone, but that doesn't help heal the damage you caused.
The thing is my ex-stepdad is probably the first person to have ever not physically harm me, but harm me nonetheless to actually try and help those he has harmed.
He outright destroyed my mom's life forever to the point she will have to live with her grandkids cause of him destroying her credit so badly and she became a stay at home mom and didn't renew her hair license.
After he abandoned us(LITERALLY abandoned us) he hit rock bottom. He lost his 150k house already bought, lost his three vehicles, lost his family, several of his family members died of old age, his biological kids hate him, he lost his 150k a year job, and the only reason why he's not rotting on the side of the street homeless is cause of his military retirement. Now he's trying to find redemption and trying to make it up to all those he's harmed. He'll he's trying to even make it up to my sister that he raped. He's trying to make it up to his biological daughter he called a "carpetmuncher" for years and harassed. He's taking care of his mom and sending us money to get on our feet financially.
It's like, "Who are you and what have you done with that asshole that we used to know?" I forgive him? Is that the right term? I've never had someone try and fix the damage they've done before, is forgiveness the right terminology for this situation?
I'm going to have a really awkward week next week.

Actually maggots eat bacteria. Using maggots to treat some flesh wounds is still practiced medically. It depends on the situation and such. Basically maggots are surprisingly sanitary.Scyto Harmony wrote:*Shudder* I fucking hate maggots...

You're not going to fucking believe this. Some old couple just fucking maced my dog!
He's old, nearly deaf, has trouble eating hard food, the nicest dog on the fucking planet, and they pepper sprayed him.
I didn't see it happen, but what I'm guessing happened is they walked by our house and he barked at them. You know how I know that's what happened? Because that's all he ever does. He barks at strangers.
Jesus fucking christ. I don't know what they sprayed him with but my dad got some on him and his face still burns.

@cb5
My take: That's entirely up to you, mate. You don't owe him jack just because he's doing what he ought to've been doing his whole life. I'm not going to say he deserves to die in a gutter, hated by everyone, but I will say this - if he's actually looking for redemption, that'll be coming from within (or from whatever god he's trying to make nice with after finding that the mortality sandwich isn't tasting so great lately), not from you, or anyone else.
Forgiveness is... fucked if I know. When you stop hating someone for the stuff they've done, I guess, but still acknowledge that it happened. When you can see them as a person, rather than as what they did, maybe. If you feel like that's what you're feeling, then maybe you've forgiven him. If that feels like something you want to do, something that'd be good for you, then maybe you should consider it. But I don't think you should do it out of a sense of obligation. I don't give a shit about him, but I do you. So that's my take. It's perfectly fine to just not want anything to do with him, one way or another, too.
@Tytan
Is it mace, or pepper spray? Apparently, they're different, or something. Anyway, if it's got capsaicin in it, milk should potentially help. Also, a veterinarian. And prosecute the old couple for animal cruelty - odds are, they'll step up to shooting little kids next. Maybe I'm being uncharitable, but they're old - they'll die soon anyway, so might as well make sure they don't hurt anyone else on the way out as they get more and more senile and aggressive. (That is REALLY uncharitable) Apparently, effects dissipate over a few hours. Talk to a vet, though.

My mum got some pretty mild pepper juice in her eye (or a grease burn on her eyelid - we're not sure which) and she had to keep her head in a bowl of cold water for ten, fifteen minutes. She's a chemist, and she found herself looking for the chemical shower... in our kitchen. The weaponized stuff is way, way worse.

Alright, so, in response to your question, I'm not sure I understand. I'm going off the assumption that you feel forgiveness for what he's done, but you're not sure you should.cb5 wrote:*snip*

I'm going to try and pose this from this standpoint: If he truly wants to make things right, he at least deserves a chance right? I mean, he was 100% wrong in the past, I'd say downright a monster in some aspects from what you've said. I'm not going to say he made a mistake; nobody does things like that by accident, but if he truly feels remorse then he may well have changed as a person.
Honestly? I'd say accept him but keep your doubts accessible, because as much chance that there is that he truly changed, it's possible for him to relapse. But everyone deserves a chance, I think. (I mean, imagine being him, He's fucked up his life and he knows it - he wouldn't be coming back if he didn't truly wish to undo his actions. It'd be truly hell to be unable to fix something that you've broken.)
@Maggots; When I was in 8th grade, I took a pack of wheat crackers to school. They were old, but the looked still good. I ate half the packet absent mindedly, before looking down at what I was eating. The cracker in my hand was covered in Maggots. I don't know if the half-pack I had eaten before had had some on it, but it's a possibility. Ever since then, can't stand even looking at them.
@Tytan; What the actual fuck? Even if they thought he was attacking them, who the fuck maces a dog?

@Old people
Those kind of opinions are eyebrow-raisers from my perspective. Well, metaphorically or whatever, since that's not a natural facial expression for me. Anyway, I've only met one assholish old person, and that was my grandpa whenever he got his jimmies in a rustle.
Still, that's just my perspective.

Who said anything about spending money on them? We move the communities out there, then we take all the vehicles and head back to civilization. They're always bitchin' about the good ol' days where you made your living with your own two hands, so let them farm their own food, make their own medicine, and repair their own machines if they're so fed up with hiring young'uns to do it.stringtheory wrote:But we would still be spending a shit ton of money on food, health care, caregivers, not to mention being held back by their inability to live in our more rapidly changing world. There are a lot of elderly that are nice and such, but I do have to agree with the sentiment. Their generation plundered the world, gave the usa a insane deficit, by and large they continue to be the largest age group with the highest rate of racists, homophobes, and just general assholes, made it borderline impossible for people to live off minimum wage, instituted countless laws that back when they were young that sterilized gays, single women, rape victims and as well as lobotomized women to "cure" them of not conforming to society norms and they act like we own them something? Hell the "inventor" of the internet and the guy accredited with the idea of connecting computers together in a network for mass information transfer was sterilized for being gay. Don't forget the burning of crosses in minorities front lawns, and the countless murders and assaults against minorities. Also laws against freedom of religion, and the murders and assaults against members of other religions. So no the younger generation doesn't "owe" their generation shit. If the individual is not like that then yes take care of your grandparents. If they're a racist fuck who thinks lobotomizing their wife is okay then no you don't owe them shit.stringtheory wrote:But we would still be spending a shit ton of money on food, health care, caregivers, not to mention being held back by their inability to live in our more rapidly changing world. In short you don't "owe" baby boomers as a generation shit. You owe your grandparents for the actions they have done in their life and not just cause "If it weren't for my generation you wouldn't be here", but what they have as a individual done.
I don't hate old people I hate the atrocities against mankind their generation committed under the pretense of "conserving traditional ideals".

Lots of old people are really nice; they have a lot of worldly experience, and that's taught them to be kind, wise, and accepting of change. They know that the world will always have some new wonder for them to experience. On the other hand, some of them are just 80 years of bitterness piled on top of one another, combined with rabid entitled conservatism, racism, and a touch of the ol' senility. They're people, just like anyone else.

Re: [Official!] Project Horizons Comment Crew Chat thread.
So what you're basically saying is that while they can't be collectively credited for their achievements (like stopping the Nazis, or making America into a global superpower, or building most of the infrastructure the new generation uses on a daily fucking basis) They can be collectively condemned for their faults (like narrow-mindedness or being unaware of environmental issues). Yeah, that makes sense.cb5 wrote:There are a lot of elderly that are nice and such, but I do have to agree with the sentiment. This. For instance, my grandfather tends to make jokes about minorities more than most people would consider healthy. Still, though, he means them in jest, even if some would start whining about it not being "Politically Correct". He's been married to my grandmother for over 50 years, he's almost always smiling, and he's always eager to help out his family.Overlong Analysis Cobalt wrote:Lots of old people are really nice; they have a lot of worldly experience, and that's taught them to be kind, wise, and accepting of change. The large scale sterilization of people is one of those chapters of history they don't like to teach in history class.Mister Frost wrote:Do you have a source for the "Sterilizing gays"/"Lobotomizing women" bullshit you're spouting? Because I've never heard of that.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compulsory_sterilization#United_States
The extremely short version is back then people believed in eugenics. Like if someone was a crack addict they would believe that their children would grow up to be crack addicts. If someone was gay then they believed their children would grow up to be gay . . and well you know where that's going.
The most notable cases of lobotomization was at long island with thousands of lobotomizations and that went on until the mid 70's. Between the mid 30's and early 50's nearly twenty thousand lobotomizations were carried out.
Not to mention murders of interracial couples, murdering minority children and such.
There's all kinds of shit your grandparents don't want to tell you about what people did back when they were young. You hear all these stories about, "back in my day we walked ten miles" well you don't hear about all the atrocities that happened either. History has been whitewashed to make the 50's and 60's out like some perfect utopia, when in reality chances are half of us if we time traveled back in time to that era within five minutes we'd get out brains pummeled out of our skulls.
Chances are if you ask your(if your grandparent is caucasian) grandparent "Grandpa, when you were young what did you think about the civil rights movement when you were experiencing it?" they will either not answer, will bullshit you, or will try to change the subject.

@Frost
Lobotomies and sterilizations did occur, along with worse. Highlights: Tuskegee. Lobotomies, history thereof. Turing. American compulsory sterilization campaigns.
It's been buried pretty hard by virtue of being unpleasant, but it's very much there.

Really? In that case, then I suppose future generations will look on us and say that if you were to go back in time, you'd end up getting blown up by an IED, or sick from pollution, or getting killed by a serial killer in some alley.
Wikipedia (as unreliable a source as it often is) even admits that many of those numbers may be (and likely are) exaggerated.
No one ever says that the 50's and 60's were a utopia. Most media nowadays, when it looks back on those times, tends to focus on the racism and the Vietnam War, respectively.
I don't know what rock you've been living under to think that people look back at previous generations as the paragons of virtue, or what issues exactly make you seem to hate the elderly so much, but at this point your posts are honestly more amusing than anything.
