[GRIMDARK] Fallout Equestria: Project Horizons Discussion
Source
Welcome to the Fallout Equestria: Project Horizons Discussion Thread!
This is the place to discuss Fallout Equestria: Project Horizons, a Fallout/MLP:FiM crossover fic by Somber. Story discussion is on the left, group therapy to the right. Please try to schedule your emotional breakdowns when they don't conflict with anyone else's.
Rules
We have just a few simple rules here.
- Don't put down Somber.
- Project Horizons is a grimdark fic which deals with adult topics, so we might discuss subjects that some readers may find uncomfortable. Be mature about it.
- If Somber or a member of the editing team says to end a discussion, please do so.
- Spoilers abound. If you're not current on the fic, we recommend that you catch up before you read on.
- Expect random discussions that may or may not have anything to do with the story.
- Have fun!
People You Should Know
Somber: The author of Project Horizons, creator of Blackjack, maker of awesomeness, is a small gray mare who lives in the head of a guy named David. Ignore her claims of suckage.
Bronode, O. Hinds, and Snipehamster: Your editing team, presented in alphabetical order. They make awesome writing look all shiny and pretty.
Kkat: The author of the original Fallout: Equestria. Not a participant in this discussion (yet), but you should be aware of her anyway. If you haven't read FOE, why are you even here? Go! Read!

Okay, so it just turned really creepy that Dawn has only female children -- four of them -- and both of the ones we've seen look extraordinarily similar to their mother.
Chapter 16, Dusk's Introduction wrote:I stopped my attack and looked down at… Glory? Yes, the gray coat was a little darker, the lavender eyes a more purplish shade, and the face a touch more mature, but it was the spitting image of Glory staring up at me.
It's almost as if the father's genetics had no say in the matter...Chapter 50, Dawn's Introduction wrote:Her coat was a light dove gray and her mane a collection of purples, lavenders, and highlights of pink.

Most importantly, hellhound claws have the unique property of slicing through alicorn shields. That alone is reason enough to develop them as a weapon system. There's no other way to face down Red Eye's alicorn troops on an equal footing.O. Hinds wrote:You're forgetting the Cathedral. The hellhounds were instrumental in the GPE/Red Eye war.
Also, saying that "everything that was accomplished could have been done from the air" ignores that the op's planners did not know exactly what would happen. For all they knew, they would need heavy ground forces.

Four? I thought there were two, I must've missed it.
But yeah, they all do look very similar. More similar than Twilight's or Applejack's family are to their kin.
Not clones as we know them... They have/had cutie marks. It is interesting nonetheless.

They're certainly not Mirror Pool copies of Dawn, but they may well be clones in the real-life sense. Clones have the same genetics, but each develops under unique conditions and therefore has slight variations on the physical theme. And using the PH understanding of souls, each is an independent person with their own soul, unique personality, and cutie mark.Ketchup wrote:Four? I thought there were two, I must've missed it.

So make that five daughters.Chapter 17 wrote:“I have four sisters, Blackjack,” she said. “Dusk is the oldest. Then Moonshadow. Then me. Lucent and Lambent are younger. My father lives on his pension through the Enclave. Dusk is an Enclave security officer. Moonshadow is in research. Lu and Lamb are in Enclave schools.
Well, it was wearing Dawn's skin because, as far as we know, it WAS Dawn. Just (literally) cybered up the wazoo. I'm not entirely convinced that Cog did ASSUME DIRECT CONTROL at any point -- Dawn may just be that crazy.guarddogjr wrote:From what I understood, yes. I mean, the dialog makes it seem that way but you never know.

PH is a good story partly because of the creep factor. And now I expect an Unholy Tank for some reason. Like a Cyberdemon counterpart of Deus.

Indeed, I see firsthand what having a clone with a very similar epigenome is like every day. But clones in a natural setting only appear in twinning and such, not from normal, separate births. Twinning in ponies appears to be even rarer than it is in real life(1 pair?), unless you count the exact duplicates, in the show. I don't know about real life equines at all, though, and I'm not an expert on humans, either.SilentCarto wrote:They're certainly not Mirror Pool copies of Dawn, but they may well be clones in the real-life sense. Well, yes, I didn't say what might have caused that insanity. But the sense I got from the scene was Dawn taking one last moment to imagine what might have been before she severed that tie forever, voluntarily. When she looked horrified at what she'd done, I thought that it was much the same way Blackjack felt after gassing 99 rather than her body no longer obeying her.CannonFodder wrote:Or dying and being brought back in a tin can drove the last of her sanity off a cliff.
By the way, does anyone else think CyberDawn looks a lot like a cyborg Chrysalis?

The technology is probably based off changelings. Instead of using magic to hide the real form it uses actual skin that can't be disrupted by magic.SilentCarto wrote:By the way, does anyone else think CyberDawn looks a lot like a cyborg Chrysalis?

As do I.Ketchup wrote:Indeed, I see firsthand what having a clone with a very similar epigenome is like every day.
Not necessarily. Parthenogenesis would create multiple clones from separate births, and pseudogamy/gynogenesis would even require Sky Striker's, ahem, 'input' to trigger the process. That line about "being from Flankfurt" is really twitching my weirdometer, especially with the note that she was a pegasus among earth ponies. What the heck did THAT mean?Ketchup wrote:But clones in a natural setting only appear in twinning and such, not from normal, separate births.

Well, another night without any progress on my commentary... maybe tomorrow...
I did try the tank picture, but it turned out completely unsatisfactory. I guess I'll have to leave anything like that up to someone else.
Sorry.

- Chapter 52 Comments:
Not a lot to say until I got down to the memory orb. I just grabbed a beer, put on some ambient jazz and Rainy Mood, and sat back to enjoy Blackjack doing some heavy thinking. I do want to call out one passage I really liked:That's some very mature thought coming from BJ. I enjoy it immensely when she's able to be really honest with herself.I knew I wouldn’t. The questions and mystery would be there like a thorn in my mind. Eventually I’d resent my friends for my own stupid decision.Eeheehee, I was right in every particular! Well, unless Somber was taking notes on my speculations about twenty chapters ago (Jeeeeeezus!), but you know. Same difference.Homage frowned at him. “You’re thinking of locking the doors so they won’t open for anypony.”
“Right. Blackjack and the hardliners will see her fail to open them,” P-21 replied.
Life Bloom smiled. “And then we can have her open something else later to be absolutely sure. Perhaps Twilight’s study. It’s off the athenaeum; most ponies won’t be there.” He looked at the others. “That way I can inform more moderate members discreetly that she is Twilight’s.”Welp, so much for that...If the Goddess had known I was related to Twilight, she might have tried to hurt me simply to torment the Twilight Sparkle within her.GYAAAH!“You’re welcome,” Dawn said happily from beside me with her merry squint.Yeah, that...“Gyaaaah!” I shouted, lurching back and falling over.Wait wait wait. Did she just casually imply that she's over 200 years old?“Where- where’d you come from?”
“Flankfurt… though I think today you call it just ‘Flank’,” she replied casually.
Speculation online. But I'll save that for next post.God I'm getting to hate her. I've got this suspicion that she knows exactly what's going on and thinks it's so cute that BJ and P-21 think they're being clever.“You should talk with her. She’s an interesting mare. Some questions and answers might help you out. Expand your horizons.” Wait... what?
My eyes went from her to him. Did he think Dawn knew something about Horizons? “If you’re sure,” I murmured, glancing past him at the amused pegasus.Ten'll get you ten and a quarter that she was a foundling.I saw my parents, both earth ponies, killed before my eyes. Such things were common then.
...Or is that "changeling"?Funny, that's not how Keeper tells it.“And together we decided to save the Wasteland, starting with Hoofington. Those were the best days of my life.”Chapter 30 wrote:Save it? Fuck no. I set out to plunder it!An irradiated hole near Stockyard, I presume. The dragon crawled off... to where, I never discovered...For one solitary moment, I felt like maybe Dawn wasn't as awful as I'd been suspecting...“Sometimes, though... sometimes I think I’d give almost anything to go back. To be with them... my family... my friends... Sky Striker. All I’d need is one word, and I’d fly back to that life. The feeling terrifies me at times.”Nope, gone again.“Then why is it you deny EC-1101 to ponies who would use it to spare countless others pain and suffering?”Yeah... what she said. Screw the locked door, sometimes I really hate being right...Looking at Dawn, the sensation of hope that Glory would have a happy life with her mother again guttered, and I felt a chill pass though me.YThat sounds good, and all we have to do is hum...“Because you want to save the Wasteland. And together, we can save it from Project Horizons.”
Yeah, no. You're in league with a soul-stealing abomination, and you're gonna have to go down.Click click click click, my bullshit detector is going off. Of course, she might believe that. Heck, it may be what Goldie told Luna. But Partypooper was intended to prevent a coup, why would the anti-coup superweapon be set to fire if a coup was permanently prevented? Doesn't add up.“Horizons itself was a superweapon developed two hundred years ago by Goldenblood to prevent a coup by the Ministry Mares.”Nice to meet you.A goddess of technology and knowledge. Cognitum.Join me, and I will complete your training. With our combined strength, we can end this destructive conflict and bring order to the galaxy!“You said so yourself. Steel Rain advised me to take it by force, and in the process wronged you. If you like, you can take his place.” She reached out and tapped my chest. “You can make certain that the Harbingers remain an order of good virtue.”That gave me a giggle. BJ's head sure is crowded for being so empty... :)I ground my teeth, trying to think of some way I could beat the ever loving snot out of him and not have Fluttershy give me dirty looks inside my head.*facepalm* Of course. She lost her eyes to the Enervation. So Cognitum gave her cyber-eyes, just like Blackjack's...And then, for an instant, she looked at me over her shoulder, her eyes open and blazing with a bright, violent green luminescence...Please please please tell me P-21 was trying to tell BJ he turned the broadcaster on and Glory's listening in on this...“What else am I supposed to do, Blackjack? I have devoted my entire life to finding some way to save the Wasteland, just as you have! I left my husband and my children in Thunderhead for this world. I must find some way to make it safe! And I’ve found it! I’ve found it!” she proclaimed as she whirled and advanced; her green eyes glared brighter as she thrust an accusing wing at me. “And you… YOU! You refuse to let me. How dare you, Blackjack?! How dare you withhold the key to Equestria’s glorious rebirth?”
Hell, the whole wasteland. Behold the Harbingers, ladies and gentlecolts. They only want to help.Oh, please tell me that's not thunder... XDOverhead the clouds boomed deeply once more.Satchel charges! Cheap and effective if you can sneak up on a tank!A second later, from the rear of the tank there blossomed an immense plume of flame that filled the air with a scream of steel.Fuck yeah! Go Glory go!I saw Dawn launch herself skyward only to be knocked from the air by a cyan bolt streaking by. The PipBuck tumbled from her hooves as Glory arched around and slammed her azure forehooves into Dawn’s face as the mare began to recover.
“Killing foals, Mother? Using a tank against foals and Blackjack?” Glory shrieked. “Are you mad?!”Immortal Death Filly is no longer cute....then the armored pony started screaming as the ripper sunk through and into her neck, the screeching saw blade painting Rampage’s face red as the Ranger collapsed.I swear she's got some kind of luck shield. Kissed by Discord? Star Touched?I flailed in an attempt to dodge; the shots buzzed as they nearly struck me, but the weight of my corpse shield overbalanced me and sent me falling to the ground.Dang it, I keep forgetting Precious exists until she shows up again like this...“Blackjack? Are you okay?” Scotch Tape asked as she raced through the muck with the purple dragonfilly at her side. Now that's using your noodle! Er... your contrabass. Whatever.I watched in shock as the red and blue colts Adagio and Allegro raced up and dropped Octavia sideways before them and the three colts from the watchtower tossed their light machine gun across the instrument’s body. Anti-machine rounds whined and sparked off the instrument’s indestructible body as the machine gun opened up a chattering line of fire into the Harbingers.Ah, catchphrases. XD“This reminds me of a very funny story!” Sekashi said with a laugh as she whirled her staff; how in the world did zebras do that? “I will have to tell it to you another time, though.”Wait, wait, wait... you meant "he's IN the tank", right?“Listen… please… he’s with them…” she said weakly, struggling for breath. “I gave him to Dawn. He’s the tank…”
Right?
Oh shit.
CUUUUUUUUUUUNT!Or as we like to call it, a boss fight arena.I was in some sort of large courtyard.Oh shit shit shit, this day keeps getting better. Argh, I can't stand the suspense! Then I looked where the stallion was pointing and saw the eyepatched Sky Striker standing two feet from Dawn.Mother of God. She went One-Winged Angel on us!Then the gray hide split along those lines and sloughed wetly apart, revealing a blacker hexagon-patterned hide hidden beneath and broken by green tracers of light. From under her gray feathers, dark chisel-like blades emerged, each sporting green circuits of light. Her hooves split as mechanical fingers erupted from the disintegrating flesh of her fetlocks, each digit tipped in a long black talon surrounded by a sickly jade aura.Speaking of catchphrases!“Okay, you metal bastard. You want to play?” As crazy as it was, I grinned from ear to ear. “Ante up.”Wait, did... did you just... do the tank fight from Ghost in the Shell?!Backflipping end over end, I ascended the stairs as the machine gun ripped a line of fire right after me. I saw that the marble wall behind me where the stairs split was embossed with the Blueblood family tree, and as I raced to the side the machine gun fire continued up along it. As I ducked behind another pillar at the top of the balcony, I watched it rip through the stone all the way up to the final name. ‘Goldenblood.’
Rain from the hole blasted in the roof pattered down around me... I hooked my fingers into the hole, squatted, and started to pull.
My flesh began to distort where pony ended and metal began.
The stress on my metal limbs caused my already battered back leg to explode apart completely, and my right foreleg ripped off entirely, connection cup and all, leaving a bloody mass of wire, metal, and meat. My left foreleg shattered at the joint midway, flopping uselessly by my side as I finally pushed myself further than even my cyberpony body could go.
You did! You totally did!I think this qualifies as the best chapter yet.Someponies have noticed I like certain animes and you might be able to pick which one inspired this battle. If you found it ridiculously cheesy and poor writing, it’s my fault.
Seriously, I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. The reveal with Dawn was not unexpected, but then went way beyond anything I had anticipated. And my only complaint about Deus is that the brick-shitting nature of the reveal was damped by your teaser about someone from early in the story showing up again. I was watching for it, so I figured out exactly what Caprice was talking about right away and it wasn't as much of a surprise as I'd have liked when BJ finally got the tank hatch open.
I want to note that I didn't really notice the GitS reference until she started straining against the hatch. Then I had to go watch the scene before the "tree of life" shot confirmed it for me. So yeah, it wasn't too super-obvious. And it's not like you just ripped off the entire fight wholesale, after all. I felt it was more like just a few referential shots because "ha ha, cyborg fighting a tank."
- Editing:
Arched = arced. The PipBuck tumbled from her hooves as Glory arched around and slammed her azure forehooves into Dawn’s face as the mare began to recover.Alighted = lit up.The mare’s eyes alighted in triumph as her jaw started to tighten on the trigger bit...Probably ought to change one of those "ate as quickly as I could" lines.I immediately started eating it as quickly as I could. “I hope can do this,” Scotch Tape said as she made repairs.
“You can. It’s in your blood,” I muttered around the cake. She flushed, but smiled as I ate as quickly as I could while Scotch made her field repairs.Spurious "her" in the middle of the sentence. The baleful green glow of her eyes flared once as her they moved to stare at my hoof.Row of steel... teeth?Through the smoke emerged two crushing treads and a broad, jagged row of steel.Repeating the phrase "row of steel teeth" here. I think.I lifted my forehooves completely on reflex and put them right above that row of steel teeth as my hind legs slid backwards beneath me.
Also, haven't you transposed your threadheading and chapter review posts?
Oh, right, that too! Though PH makes it less a unique property of going through alicorn shields at all and more a unique property of completely ignoring them. Either way between their burrowing ability, scent tracking ability and general toughness Hellhounds are nasty enough as it is. Add in the fact they make excellent pack hunters and thus innate users of battlefield tactics makes them more daunting. And now lets toss in the fact they have light sabers for claws and have Rayguns. My no part of this picture is not impressive to a military recruiter or more daunting to potential foes.

The hellhound forces would also, were the GPE so inclined, aid the holding and policing of the surface with minimal pegasi presence. That means that the few who know and are okay with the truth can do the job themselves and avoid getting a larger number of pegasi involved.Cptadder wrote:To note it appears the Hellhounds demonstrated ability to slice through solid metal like tinfoil implies that they have a frighteningly strong upper body strength combined with very durable claws.... Of course, these plans are all pre-Cauterize; I wouldn't be surprised if the original plan was to secretly build up a hellhound force on the ground, scout out targets, and then launch a massive blitzkrieg.

I want to note that, while it sucks to be Glory right now, I'm really glad to see the emotional roles reversed. Ever since BJ and Glory got together, Glory has been the stable one while BJ went to pieces. Now BJ had the chance to be there when Glory needs her, and I love that.

Just imagine if Blackjack does save the hellhounds then that automatically gives her a +50 boost on intimidation cause no one sane would ever attack a ally of hellhounds.Cptadder wrote:To note it appears the Hellhounds demonstrated ability to slice through solid metal like tinfoil implies that they have a frighteningly strong upper body strength combined with very durable claws.... Or alternatively their claws are either made out of Adamantium or have a monomolecular edge.

I mean I'm sure Blackjack will try but the thing is I fully expect Blackjack to get into sitcom worth hijinks trying to sort things out. She has grown as a pony over the last month but I still expect her to try something that would work great in 99 not so much in the Wasteland. She's already done this twice before.
Hopefully she runs her plan past P-21 first before she gets in the banana costume.

Nope, the first post on 34 is the last post in the old thread; the second post on 34 is the new first post.O. Hinds wrote:Also, haven't you transposed your threadheading and chapter review posts?
Well, yes, you can batter through standard alicorn shields by any method you like, it's just that the hellhounds tear straight through. However, the Green cooperative shields seem to be completely impenetrable to conventional man-portable weapons, even Little Gilda. (I won't make any guesses about balefire eggs or vehicle-mounted weapons.) To hellhound claws, though, they're tissue paper.SilentCarto wrote:Oh, right, that too! Though PH makes it less a unique property of going through alicorn shields at all and more a unique property of completely ignoring them. Other melee attacks can do it, but hellhound claws do it effortlessly.

And now it's time to do the time warp again, because I'm catching up on everpony else's chapter comments while keeping up with current posting. Whee!
Actually, getting close to a tank is a soldier's best chance. In close, the tank can't bring its guns to bear and the soldier can deploy weapons capable of disabling the tank. Deus has automated machine guns that can sweep his own deck, but most tanks can't do that; the crew has to leave the safety of the interior to deal with boarders.Ironmonger wrote:Cover, concealment, and A BIG FUCKING WEAPON. Or at least something that works. Not wise to get close to a tank. Read something about magnetic charges where soldiers would have to get right next to the blasted thing (pun completely intended) and attach it. Or something...damnit I don't know what weapon it was...

Maybe it's not so much as their claws are super sharp or made out of adamantium, but rather the taint they've been exposed to mutated not only their bodies but tainted their claws too? The taint has Discord's chaos magic in it. IMP was made to use alicorns by using starmetal to stabilize the chaos magic. Without the starmetal to stabilize the chaos magic then most creatures exposed to taint would have extremely chaotic mutations. Hellhounds would be walking jars of chaos magic. Chaos magic can just ignore regular magic.SilentCarto wrote:Well, yes, you can batter through standard alicorn shields by any method you like, it's just that the hellhounds tear straight through. Basically what I'm getting at is maybe it's not that the hellhounds actual claws are sharp enough, but rather the taint they've been exposed to and the chaos magic makes them able to ignore regular magic? Not so much as a bypass spell, but rather something the magic shields just can't block out.

Given the setting, I thing the theory of hellhounds having magical claws is more probable that one where they would somehow have INCREDIBLY sharp claws from a purely mechanical standpoint.CannonFodder wrote:[magical claws]

I think it's more of a mix. They have traces of chaos magic flowing through their bodies. Also that with enough force and it focused to a point it could go through a shield. Theoretically you could put the sharp end of a knife into taint until it's completely contaminated and then use it the same way.Harmony Ltd. wrote:Given the setting, I thing the theory of hellhounds having magical claws is more probable that one where they would somehow have INCREDIBLY sharp claws from a purely mechanical standpoint.CannonFodder wrote:[magical claws]

Much like how necromancy and enervation don't care whatsoever if there's a shield up it's getting through.

Well, when I heard there was a Fallen Star in Hoofington sucking the life out of the area, and which would eat the life of the whole planet if it could, guarddogjr wrote:Harmony Ltd. wrote:Random thought :
New Dawn looks awfully like a ponified version of a Necron, right ?
Does that make The Eater of Souls a C'Tan ?
I mean, it's a Star. That eat souls. That... kinda make sense, right ?
That's what I've been thinking for quite awhile, especially after Somber did mention that it ate other stars...
and knowing that it turned a benevolent Princess into a monster fascinated by its own power,
I thought more of Lavos.

Re: [GRIMDARK] Fallout Equestria: Project Horizons Discussion
The reason why everypony descendant from Dawn looks pretty much the same is...
- Spoiler:
- because Dawn is a changeling (or part changeling, if not full). Yes, yes, I know - it's quite obvious. All the same, reasons:
-She was a pegasus born to "two earth ponies." - that alone is questionable but we do know it can happen thanks to the Baby Cakes episode. However, it's a very rare occurrence and even then it's questionable if Cakes was even telling the truth in the first place.
[Especially with how everypony was so confused about such a thing happening.]
If she was a changeling however, she wouldn't have any problems with having wings - seeing as even the basic changelings have wings. Even if she was the child of a changeling, that would explain why she would have wings when genetics dictate that it's more than just unlikely.
Being from the ground, Pegasai are rare as all hell. Surely there's no way there could be any explanation of how she could be a pegasus.
-Changelings could've come back to Equestria and hidden as ponies. Due to the lack of love, they'd be spread out thinly and have to mate with ponies. If one was to mate with Dawns mother (or father...) it would explain why Dawn could be a pegasai.
-Changelings feed off love, right? While it could be that she was sincere for only a moment, chances are that the reason she was speaking about the love she used to hold with Sky Striker is because she either has subliminal cravings for love or outright hungers for it. The easiest way to get it is to actually earn it.
-A changeling would want peace in Equestria so they may feed with much more ease.
-It would explain why her children all have her physical traits in terms of looks. Changeling minions are known to look identical and even then, even without that, the fact they can transform would probably restrict the physique / aesthetics of any pony they breed with to what form they've taken.
-She fucking ripped her own skin off and grew shit like a changeling would.
-It would be yet another mindfuck for Glory to deal with.
