So in short it's not just a shitty mary sue, it's a shitty moeblob mary sue built for a shitty story built around a shitty aesop and filled with more shitty mary sue OCs. I'll get right around to never looking at that again.

Re: [Official!] Project Horizons Comment Crew Chat thread.
I really fucking hate this fandom sometimes because most of what I personally see is people who say stuff like "If you don't like this, you're retarded." and actually seriously mean that rather than in jest, and a lot of them do NOT seem to know how to use proper logic. Sheesh, the only decent people I've found so far are in the FoE community, and the best are right here on Cloudsville.
EDIT: Actually, I have found decent people in the Vamponies group on FimFiction, but that's a rare exception in my experience.
End ofaneurysm rant.

A shame really that that video is immune to criticism. It has the elements of something that people to defend regardless of its merits. A disabled child, tear jerking elements / attempts, being a 15 minute fanimation.
Logical discourse gets shut down. Any attempt of criticism, constructive or otherwise, will be construed as hatred. By that point there really isn't a point to talking about it in the mainstream since there is basically an enforced echo chamber.

My thoughts on it:
@Ironmonger
That's just literally anyone ever. Well, not anyone, but it's more of a human condition thing than a fandom thing. See anyone with an ideology who hasn't actually thought and talked enough about said ideology with others, for instance.
@Downloaded Skill
Well, this is hatred, in fairness. =P
- Spoiler:
- It was okay for a fan project. If that sounds like it's a big friggin' caveat, it is. (Maybe it shouldn't be, considering the high level of quality that some fans have put out, but oh well.)
-The idea was cliche in concept, nice in writing (sort of - I'll get to what I liked in this in a sec), and cliche in execution.
-Animation-wise, it was okay. Better than some TV shows' first seasons, frankly, but not great. Some things worked better than others - Celestia's wing hugs stood out in a way that you don't want animations to stand out, while I thought that the floating snowflake in the beginning was nicely handled.
-Voice acting was a bit hit and miss. Snowdrops was... eh. The voice actress was fine, I suppose, but I'm not so sure it was the right stylistic choice to have her be so little matchstick girl-y. (Thank god they successfully dodged that in the end) I thought Celestia's voice was good, though, and the teacher's was fine. Other students sounded a bit derivative and irritating, but since they were not important as characters, I guess that's okay. Sort of.
-The basic plot - "Sad, shy, physically challenged little girl who is teased and disliked at school makes something beautiful" - is a tad too done, I think, to be played as straight as they played it. More clever exploration of it would have been nice, but making it longer probably would have been ill-advised. They did subvert the "little matchstick girl" shtick, though, and this is what I appreciated a lot about it. Instead of having her just fade away after making her mark - "I have given my great work to the world, and served my purpose as a metaphor - now I can die!" - she actually appears to have gone on to become an artisan, inventing snowflake crystallization. Her works appear to have been held in such high regard that her originals were saved for use as the traditional first snowflake each winter, until there were none left; this did make the last scene work fairly well for me, incidentally. I wasn't a fan of putting in the significance with Luna, to be honest - sure, I love Luna as much as the next guy (maybe more, even!), but it seemed a little bit overdone. Either make it work by exploring it in an interesting way, or don't do it. (That is my motto, anyway. Well. One of my mottoes.)
-Overall, it was okay. I thought it did some clever, interesting things, and it wasn't ugly. It could have done some stuff better, certainly, but it wasn't a bad job, on the whole, and it did at least seem genuine, for what that's worth.

I can appreciate the effort put into Snowdrop, but it kinda felt like an honest attempt at this is what I was watching.

Well...alright, I'll keep that in mind. It's just one of those things that really rubs me the wrong way, and the fan-issues with Snowdrops just kinda touched a few nerves.Overlong Analysis Cobalt wrote:

Also, did anyone besides me notice the animation errors like the foals just "vanishing" off the side of the screen at the end of the classroom scene? Kinda drove me nuts. How the hell did they overlook that? I've had some experience with Flash and I know that that is not something hard to fix.

Normally I would have posted that in the Gun thread, but the design is so absurd compared to other knives that I just had to show you guys. It qualifies as random.

That's... a fairly impractical weapon, or a completely useless tool. With that weight you could get a meter+ long sword, and it would have better balance. The advantages of a knife, speed, concealability, maneuverability, even a good deal of the sharpness, are completely negated by the absurd thickness and breadth of that blade. It's like an axe, but without the haft so you don't even get any momentum or leverage to it.Ironmonger wrote:Big mofo of a knife.
In short, an excellent weapon for showing off your terrible taste in weapons.

Pshah, you don't get weapons like that to defend yourself. You get them to make yourself feel better about yourself. It's like climbing Mount Everest - you do it to say, "I've climbed the biggest mountain in the world!" Except in this case, it's, "I've made the biggest knife in the world!" Practicality is not even a tertiary consideration. Also, in both cases, certain kinds of people become inclined to sleep with you.

On the other hand, put that sucker at the tip of a spear with the appropriate balancing and then this could be interesting.

Appropriate balancing would be difficult and the finished product would be very heavy and slow. There's a good reason most blades aren't half an inch thick and three inches across, at least once you move past using raw copper as your primary metal.Harmony Ltd. wrote:On the other hand, put that sucker at the tip of a spear with the appropriate balancing and then this could be interesting.

Well, I mean as a way to salvage it as a usable weapon, not to make it a -good one-.
Would give it more reach, at least.

In short, I agree with you Sindri.
Swords are overrated as close combat weapons anyway, as far I can tell. AFAIK (I'm probably wrong), most infantry in the middle-age / renaissance used spears / pikes / halberds, with blades only being used as last line of defense weapon when their formation was broken.

From what I get, swords were more a way to show your status as a noble than a primary weapon.

Uh... well, I know the gladius was a staple of the Roman army during some of their campaigns. I guess it depended on what armor and stuff people had, styles, forms of warfare... Sindri will probably know more.Harmony Ltd. wrote:From what I get, swords were more a way to show your status as a noble than a primary weapon.

Re: [Official!] Project Horizons Comment Crew Chat thread.
Well, a long spear is mostly useless once someone gets inside your reach; it's too awkward for close combat. That said, it's incredibly simple to learn, cheap to make, and a formation of polearms is very difficult to break. A sword is fairly expensive, requires skill, and in the end is usually more practical for battles between people than battles between armies if that makes sense; it's great for a skirmisher, and a nice sidearm for a knight (with the primary weapon being the lance in the west and the bow in the east as a general rule), but not practical for dense formations of conscripts.Harmony Ltd. wrote:In short, I agree with you Sindri.

The majority of "soldiers" in a typical medieval war would be the serfs and villeins and assorted other rabble you can conscript, hunting bows, farm implements, and cheap polearms for their weapons, minimal training, and tactics that take advantage of large numbers and pointy sticks. A sword is very practical in the hands of a dedicated warrior, but the average peasant barely knows which end to hold, the cost of equipping them all would be absurd, and they don't fit the kind of massed formation fighting that untrained mobs are best for.
Then toward the Renaissance firearms start to appear and polearms tend to get phased out; a pike square wins against almost anything with weapons less than 20ft long, but bullets tear right through them. But swords are still a great sidearm because of the long reload times and low accuracy of early guns. At least until bayonets appear, and then those stick around to... well, now.
Yes good.Overlong Analysis Cobalt wrote:You could put it in a Rock-It launcher. :)

Yes, like I was trying to convey swords are not the be all end all of ancient warfare, and in most cases was only used as a sidearm.
It wasn't the primary weapon of choice that heroic fantasy / D&D / shonen manga would tend to imply.
That's what I meant by "overrated".

Correct me if I'm wrong, but a fair amount of late-midieval one-on-one fighting (between knights, at least) was done with maces and such to combat the advances in armor tech, I believe
