The constraint equation in this case is "z=a(x^2)", which produces "λ(δz-2axδx)=0". My problem was that I didn't realize that "2ax" was a valid coefficient.

None of the Command and Conquers, pretty sure it's neither Outpost, not Starcraft...
Genewars? 2140? Total Annihilation? Battlezone? Homeworld? Yeah, I'm just calling out any that I remember the name of but not enough details to rule it out.
