Actually, the mission was a success. Using minimal parts required for the flight, I managed to launch a ship into space on a course that would take it out of the orbit of the sun.

I've done it before using an insanely huge ship, called the Soviet Bastard - in honour of Katarn. This time I didn't expect it to work seeing as the ship was a lot smaller, but the gods of Kerbin allowed for it to happen.

...Just a shame that it'll be another 63 years before it reaches its final destination.

Eh, it's harder to propel a gas giant. You need to make a whole complicated double-ended rocket thing to maintain altitude instead of just pushing into the core and being crushed. With a rocky world it's much easier to just strap the biggest thrusters you have to your most stable/least populated tectonic plate and push.
The disadvantage being that you need to live on the rock that's shaking and cracking and losing atmo as it flies through space, instead of colonizing a nice peaceful moon while all the action happens on the giant it's tied to.
