DX9 was awesome. All I am saying is DX11 is better, visually and performance wise. Which for me would warrant an upgrade.
Don't look at me though I have a shitty 545.

re VirtualBox:
How is this better than VMWare? I've already got VMWare installed, after all, and I'd rather not go through the trouble of dumping it and installing something else instead without a good reason.
re security:
Hm. That's an interesting idea. Can VMWare run Linux too? I'm currently doing the reverse (browsing as usual in OSX and denying the Windows 7 VM any internet access at all), but that sounds like it might possibly be useful at some point.

Ah that would be a waste then.
Here I am with Windows 8 which is not much different from W7 really, so if you don't like 7 you don't like 8.

I must say, the only way I've found Windows 7 to be at all better than (or as good as) OS 10.6.8 is the ease of merging folders. Windows machines can't even mount disc images without added software?

AMD is best for price:performance ratio
7850 is probably the best cheaper card. 7870 is a good one too.
If you've got the money, 7950 is the sweet spot. 7970 is probably above what you're after though. (All Radeon HD series cards)
Nvidea cards aren't the devil, but they ARE:
-Overpriced / not as good in terms of price:performance
-Older cards (400 series) overheat drastically and super easily
-When a game isn't developed / optimised for them specifically, they clunk out a lot of the time
-Have "phsyx" which is a complete and utter sham and does nothing your CPU can't if you own any i5 or FX6300 or better
-The 580 is apparently better than the 660, somehow, despite that making no sense.
-Extremely lacking in VRAM
-Cannot into multi-monitor displays
Their good quality is that they SLI very well with little microstutter, something AMD has an issue with.

Man up and get Win7, screw Win8 though. It's as bad as if not worse than Vista.
You're lagging behind on XP though, without a reliable 64bit OS (if you even are using the very dodgy XP 64bit at all). Also the amount of security flaws in XP and general response times...
Seriously, pirate a copy and dual boot it. Realise how amazing Win7 is.

How is Windows 8 as bad or worse than Vista? Vista had real issues with compatibility, and performance. Windows 8 is Windows 7 with improvements under the hood. The only difference is the start menu, which is the only thing people seem to complain about. I have a problem with it the start menu, yes. However it is nowhere near the tier of shit that was Vista.

Win8 is about the same as Vista to me because they should have known better.

I would like to hear these other things because the metro interface is something you wont even use. From my experience it's just better completely.
@string Essentially its compatibility with most programs designed for XP was shaky at best. Also it was horribly optimized. If you computer was barely able to run Vista, it may actually run BETTER with 7 which is horrible considering it is supposed to work the other way.

My answer as a /g/entoo-man is this:
1. Install Gentoo
2. It's free as in Richard Stallman

Oh, I downloaded software (something called MagicDisc) when I needed to mount a .cue/bin as part of my experiments, and before that I was just telling VMWare to use the disc image in OSX as the Windows disc drive. I was just shocked to discover that mounting .isos wasn't a standard feature.IncoherentOrange wrote:He doesn't like change. @Windows discussion:
Win Vista: I had no problems whatsoever. Seriously. Throughout all the griping and bitching when it came out, I had no issue. I wouldn't go back to it, though. I'm far too used to 7 now, which is better in every way.
Win 7: Only a couple problems. Some older programs will no longer run. Oh, and I put it on my laptop and could no longer use my touchpad, and couldn't find any drivers that would make it work. Wasn't a big deal, though. I fucking hate touchpads.
But hey, that's what I get for putting 7 ultimate on a laptop that originally came with vista basic (which is the only vista I will admit is utter crap. I slapped home premium on that sucker first chance I got).
Win 8: I just got a new laptop mid-January that came with Windows 8. I've had a couple compatibility issues. One older game would not run on it (which ran fine on x64 Win 7), and Eclipse SDK will not run on it (which saddens me). One thing that I do dislike is that it has suddenly become more difficult for me to run self diagnostics. I have to do a bit of a song and dance just to be able to start the thing in safe mode, and I can't seem to access alternate start options at startup or through BIOS (but that could be the manufacturer's fault, not Microsoft's).
As for the issue of the missing start menu? Barely an issue at all. I however, already have things organized in a minimalist, easy-to-reach fashion, and doesn't clutter the desktop. You'll be spending quite a lot of time at the start screen anyways. So, if you're the person who has a bunch of shortcuts all over your desktop, just pin them in the start screen, and spend a little time trying to learn how to use Metro. It's really not all that bad. Also, hotkeys are your friend. Seriously. I will point out though that it was designed more for touchscreen use, so you lose some functions of 8 if you don't have a touchscreen or a multitouch touchpad.
- desktop:
- laptop:
I went and bought 8 Professional while it was still 40 bucks, and I'm seriously considering throwing it on my desktop if I don't use it to upgrade my laptop (if i even can. I couldn't download the damn thing on the laptop, but could on desktop. Gave me some bullshit reason that "it was not available in my area"). But, I'm still worried about any other hidden compatibility issues. I just need to get off my lazy ass and investigate first.
Ketchup, I don't mean to sound like a dick, but seriously, get with the new age. There is really no legitimate need to run XP now except for old games/programs. There's no sense in daily running an old OS that is unsupported, puts limitations on your hardware usage, and grows more and more vulnerable each day. Get a new OS.

I've heard all of that before more than once. I haven't had problems with viruses, and everything works fine. XP actually does get security updates, contrary to what people say.
That said, I'll be getting 7 when I get an SSD.
Essentially, I don't care enough to give it urgency.

Ran the first round of my Pathfinder campaign yesterday. Gonna need to talk with one player about branding and attempting to convert everyone his character meets (including other players) to the Church of Moloch, but otherwise I think it went well. 3 negative levels and a near death in the first encounter! =D Yes, I am starting to take joy in allowing players to metagame themselves to death. (For the record, they started level five, so I feel no guilt about allowing them to bum rush a vampire)
