Well, I can say that I'm thinking it's no longer "rumors."
Expectations are not high over here, but who knows? I didn't think Game of Thrones would be even halfway decent the first time I heard about it. My main hope is honestly that the talent for MLPFIM doesn't get put on this, though. Cultivating a good crop of talent that knows and loves the show is one of the best things that can happen for television, seems like. I'm not saying I'm gonna give it a chance without being prodded to do so, though. Like I said: low expectations, insomuch as I've thought about it.

A soldier (at least one who chose to be, rather than a victim of draft or whatever) is pretty much by definition someone who considers violence as a solution to problems. As long as you know when to fight better than you know how to fight, there really isn't a problem; rapid and overwhelming application of force can save a lot of lives.Mister Frost wrote:I tend to solve confrontations a bit more.... Assertively, so there's that.
Given that I'll be joining the Army within the next few months, I hope this doesn't come off as sociopathic or anything

Not judging yet.
Right, that's either a very impressive shop job by somebody with way too much free time, or a disappointing but unsurprising truth. I'll join those hoping that good FiM talent doesn't get diverted to this, and while I'll hold off real judgement until I see an episode I hold little hope.

:D Man, I had a whole bit typed up about how I would abruptly become super interested in My Little Human if they took it in a "sun goddess-worshipping black metal pagan psychopaths" direction, but I thought it was too crazy to mention! My Little Mayhem is go!

@Sindri, Quotidian
I may or may not have thought about this stuff before while bored.
- Derpiness:
- The elements of extreme metal: anarchy (AJ, with her subsistence farm out in the sticks and distrust of help), satanism (RD, with her mystical powers and individualistic streak), nationalism (Rarity, with her pride at her unicorn nature and desire to someday return to their capital, Canterlot), nature (FS, who commands the animals and believes in the sanctity of the natural world), brutality (Pinkie, with her relentless energy and imaginative streak), and sick guitar playing (TS, whose magic gives her the power to play all the solos and whose studious nature lets her play in any style). Anarchy and nationalism don't get along well...
The episodes include AJ trying to record a lo-fi album alone and finally recognizing that bedroom black metal projects suck and ruin your life, saving the reappeared Ice Crystal Empire from the evil Pope Sombra's influence, and Twilight learning from Pinkie that, while technical skill is well and good, sometimes you just need to feel the metal.
I may or may not have thought about this stuff before while bored.

You mad genius. Now I'm picturing Twilight levitating like six electric guitars at once and letting loose the most epic riff known to pony kind. Ears bleed, bowels drop, blood turns to gasoline. Ponies headbang until their necks snap from the force and their severed heads roll into a pile at Twilight's feet.Overlong Analysis Cobalt wrote:I may or may not have thought about this stuff before while bored.

Right. On another note, Valentines day is tomorrow. Anyone got any plans with their special somepony? I plan on spending a quiet evening with Mr. Jack Daniels, and then weeping into the toilet bowl because I'M SO ALONE OH GOD I JUST WANT SOMEONE TO LOVE ME!

But seriously, I've never had a significant other and have no plans to find one in the future. I'm too busy to give someone like that the attention they deserve, I've already cut out pretty much the whole segment of the population interested in sex as candidates(99+%), and I haven't had much problem with loneliness thus far. Though if it weren't for RPG sessions forcing me to look at real people face to face, and sporadic bursts of familial meddling, I'd probably go a bit peculiar; most of my friends are either words on a computer screen or cats...

@Sindri: Just remember, you won't always be asexual. Sexuality changes throughout life.
And you'll find somebody to shake you out of that social recluse stuff too. I don't hang out with anyone, ever. And yet there is a girl who makes me WANT to constantly leave my little cave to spend time with her. Stupid feelings and shit.
Anyways, point is that you will most likely find your opinion on that changing.

I've always wondered what it would be like to be asexual. I mean, it seems like it would make life a lot less complicated, at least in the short to mid term. But I imagine there would still be all that annoying societal pressure to deal with, plus if you're not aromantic that could lead to some problems. I dunno. Any thoughts Sindri?CamoBadger wrote:@Sindri: Just remember, you won't always be asexual. Sexuality changes throughout life.

Whenever I deploy or go to training with the military I am basically asexual. My sex drive just turns off until I get home (then I hump like a rabbit).Quotidian wrote:I've always wondered what it would be like to be asexual. Anyways, it makes it easier to think and focus in my opinion. It's pretty hard to focus on stuff when I see a nice ass and instantly forget what I was doing for the 5 seconds it takes to mentally strip off the pants, so going without that was nice.
Then again, I was more focused on not dying.

Yeah, the possibility of horrific death does tend to put things in focus. My problem is the antidepressants I'm on Just completely destroy my sex drive but don't do anything for the "I desperately want snuggles and companionship" drive. That, and I'm not the best at the whole dating thing.

Right, that must be why so many homo- and bisexuals have suddenly become straight once that grew out of that silly little phase. [/sarcasm]
I'm not a prepubescent kid. I'm not a highschool student who can't get a date and has convinced myself I don't want one anyway. I haven't chosen to be celibate for convenience or to suppress my 'unclean urges'. I don't have some obscure, severe fetish preventing me from getting off with normal people. I don't avoid human contact. I'm not afraid of sex, the opposite gender, or anyone's genitalia. I haven't been traumatized, mentally scarred, or forced into psychological repression. I don't dislike contact, and in fact have been described by friends as 'uncomfortably huggy' more than once. I'm not exceptionally career focused, or a dedicated soldier, or some pompous academic believing myself above such petty matters.
I have been living, maturing, meeting people, making friends, etc. for many years, and in that time I have never felt sexually attracted to anyone, regardless of age, race, gender, creed, species, etc. When I was younger, and thought there was probably something wrong with me, I explored quite a few obscure options (and frequented many of the darkest and most disturbing pockets of the internet in the process) and experimented more than a bit, but never felt any trace of lust.
I'm not opposed to a romantic relationship and I certainly see the appeal of sharing your life with somebody you care about, but in our culture that kind of emotional connection is pretty solidly linked to sex in every normal person's mind. The vast majority of potential partners would want that physical connection, and want it to be mutual, and though I can theoretically go through the motions I doubt many people would be satisfied with that and I refuse to base a relationship on my ability to feign interest in something, so until and unless I get close enough to someone as asexual as me, or someone with a highly unconventional view of romance, I don't see it happening.
Sorry if I jumped down your throat a bit there, but I find it extremely irritating when someone without any personal context or training assumes that they know how I work better than I do. And claiming that an entire (though rare and unusual) category of people don't exist just because they don't match your personal experience? That's generally n0t 0kay.
Quotidian wrote:I've always wondered what it would be like to be asexual. I mean, it seems like it would make life a lot less complicated, at least in the short to mid term. It does skip over a lot of the problems normal people seem to have. My puberty was probably a lot less stressful than most, since the new feelings that generally need to be adjusted to never appeared. The lack of romance leads to a lack of relationship-based drama. My objectivity on the subject actually makes me decent at advising others on the subject, or at least good enough that they kept coming to me for advice... I probably waste a lot less time and resources on porn than most?
There's definitely less of a societal stigma than with homosexuality, polyamory, etc. because people object less to you not doing a normal thing than to you doing something they consider weird. Relating to other people might be a bit more difficult since I don't have personal context for a huge part of typical motivations, but I also don't have anything to compare it to, so maybe studying people's psychology and relationships starting from a blank slate makes it easier than it would be if I were close but not exactly the same? Dunno. My own lack of prospects in romance is probably a contributing factor in my interest in good romance in fiction and in watching the relationships of others, but I don't really regard that as a downside (people get adorable when they're in love with each other).
Really the main downsides are the ones I've already covered: slim chance for deep relationships or emotional intimacy, and normal (often nice, openminded) people telling you that you don't exist or that you're wrong about who you are because your emotional framework is so different from theirs. It does get annoying sometimes wanting contact and not having anyone close enough to feel comfortable with more than a quick hug... and there have been times in the past when sleeping alone was enough that I was tempted to see if I could fake it long enough to pick someone up just to feel somebody warm and solid behind me, but I never went that far and the times it really bothered me have been few and far between.

I'm asexual aromantic, and for me the only problems I have with it are that my friends will never. Fucking. Drop it. Goddamnit, it comes up somehow every conversation with them, often completely unrelated. Whenever I'm introduced to someone, they say "And this is [REDACTED]. He's asexual." And nine times our of ten, because nine out of ten people are fucking morons, I have to explain what asexuality is.

@Sindri: Thanks for the reply. I find human sexuality, in all its myriad beauty and creepiness to be endlessly fascinating, and an "outside" viewpoint is always interesting to hear.
@Frost: Haha. Yeah, my friends did that for a while too. "This is Quotidian, he's gay." And then I have to spend five awkward minutes explaining pansexuality and the unsuitability of the gender binary and bleh.

Heh. I got lucky on that front. Though it occurs to me that I've never brought the subject up with several of them... and considering my occasional flirtatiousness (it's still fun, and people get hilarious when they're flustered, though I generally have to stick to homosexuals of the opposite gender and heterosexuals of the same, to avoid accidentally leading on someone who might be interested and to maximize the awkwardness for them) who knows what assumptions have been made about me...
Anyway, by close friends know and usually don't bring it up unless there's actual context and a reasonable discussion on or near the topic. And I think I got the point across to my parents well enough that they're looking to my sister for grandkids instead of me...
It definitely is a fascinating subject, and what started as a confused attempt to figure out what I am has led to a lot of information on the topic (and psychology in general) and a lot of good friends in the LGBTQAPwhateverotherlettersthey'vetackedonthistime community.Quotidian wrote:@Sindri: Thanks for the reply. I don't know how any of this relates to my general lack of empathy and possible high-functioning sociopathy, but I noticed I have similar reactions towards "cute" things: tolerance at best, annoyance at worst.
Everyone else is hugging or comforting someone who's crying because (this happened just today) she broke up with her boyfriend and then a week later asks to get back together, and cries for two fucking days when he says no. Meanwhile, I'm just sitting here, wondering how we became the dominant species when most of us appear to be emotional clusterfucks.

My current friends are A.) not part of the problem. Iron, for example, practically never mentions it, or B.) useful. The main perpetrator in question keeps his house stocked with tasty snacks. The annoyance is worth it for all those tasty snacks.

Nah, being disgusted by overemotional clusterfucks is normal. Ah, a fellow Sturgeonite!
I put up with annoying behavior vis a vis sexuality from my friends because I know where they're coming from. They all grew up in fairly sheltered, suburbanite homes in the South, so for a while I was the interesting weird person they knew and wanted to show off to all their friends. They've grown out of that now, so it's not a problem.
And as far as most people being emotional clusterfucks, well, I'm an emotional clusterfuck. I'm just private about it. Why should I bother other people just because I don't have my shit in order?

Girls in high school don't seem to be worth the trouble. Too much drama, gossip, assholes, etc...
I'm aromantic, and I'm content with that, as I am with my life in general. My friends give me no trouble about it.
Sturgeon's Law works well with people, unfortunately. I have about 5 rather close friends, plus my brother and a few satellite acquaintances. There are 900 people attending my school.

Could I get a link to that study? Because past the end of puberty, not counting the 'normal college experimentation,' and outside of sudden onsets of maternal/paternal instinct, priorities and habits changing with maturity, or people finally getting past their childhood/cultural/religious repression, that hasn't been what I've observed... what studies on the subject I remember, and all my observations, seem to indicate that sexual orientation is pretty much set by the end of puberty if not long before that, and there are good arguments to be made for it being genetic.
