Well, I can tell you that whatever you build with an AR is going to be at least somewhat useful

Recurve or compound?

Cool. I wouldn't mind getting a bow. Especially one of those kick-ass compound ones.
Problem is the lefty ones tend to be a bit pricier

Re: [Official!] Project Horizons Comment Crew Chat thread.
I've had numerous occasions to try compound bows, and I've found that I very much prefer using a "normal" bow like mine.
The compound DO have a lot of power, but they are also heavy (which much more of a deal breaker than with firearms I'd say given how one has to weld a bow for it to be effective), and hard to control : they release a lot of "punch" in a very short timeframe - kind of like recoil, but it's more about the vibrations.
Also, one thing you have to know when using a bow, is that there's no magic as to where the "energy" for the shot come from : your arms. Meaning that the more powerful the bow, the more efforts you'll have to give it. Sure compound use pulleys and other force-multiplication mechanisms, but they still take a bit of effort to use.
So unless you want to hit at full force a target more than 75 meters away, most of the time you'll be better served by using a "normal" bow which you'll have had time to get used to, and which ballistic you'll have assimilated.
Basically, from my own experience, compound bows offer a flatter trajectory, but they are harder to control and a bit more tiring to use.

To moderate what I said, compound aren't bad, I just personally prefer "normal".

I've not used either, so I'll trust you on that. Me being the gun nut I am, I would probably start out on a crossbow anyhow

Always wanted to try one, but from what I've heard they are a pain in the ass to reload.
At least I think it's the closest I can come to owning a "firearm" without having to own a license or signal me owning a gun to the Authorities. That and ammunitions are easier to re-use [*].
[*] : I remember having at one time used the same arrows for my bow for several years, shooting them dozens of time a week, every week.

Re: [Official!] Project Horizons Comment Crew Chat thread.
Funny anecdote :
I have done archery for, like, five years, but it has been years since I did any (I stopped doing it in High School, because fuck school...).
A few month ago, I went to the local shooting club, to test the sport and see if it interested me. By shooting club, I mean it's not exactly firearms, but pellet guns and rifles (of that kind : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_gun#Pneumatic ).
So, my first essay of a "carabine". At ten meters, I shit you not, I consistently managed a grouping of an inch with a dozen shots. I'll let you calculate what that mean in angles and shit because I'm too lazy for that.
Let's just say the instructor had difficulties believing me when I said I was a beginner. Apparently I have the "shooter's instinct", whatever that mean.
But more seriously, yeah, I'd take you on that offer.

Air guns are a bit different than firearms, as you're fighting recoil, but at the same time you have more weight stabilizing the gun. I tend to be wicked accurate (even though I tend to dump my magazines in around ten seconds) with 9mm and .45 ACP, .40 S&W I'm alright with.
My brother has two compound bows, but to the best of my knowledge he's never competed with them.

I also intend to study something like Krav Maga or a similar martial art at some point.

I liked Aikido very much the 6 month or so I did it. Though it's maybe a bit too... "pacifistic" for you.
I chose it specifically because, nominally, it's a martial art with no "attack" move, only defensive ones.
I found it really relaxing to practice, at least. Good stress reliever.

Well, it's a bit more complex than that, but yeah, probably not your style. A radically different philosophy than Krav Maga to say the least.

I tend to solve confrontations a bit more.... Assertively, so there's that.
Given that I'll be joining the Army within the next few months, I hope this doesn't come off as sociopathic or anything

The only member of the Army I know personally is my uncle, and he's pretty much a sociopath. He also taught me how to shoot a handgun at like age ten, so... yay sociopaths?
Unrelated topic time!
How's everyone doing tonight? Weirdly enough, I'm doing pretty good. I've finally cracked my writer's block, Stormfront is progressing slowly but surely, I'm getting back into decent shape, and I've finally got my school shit together enough to feel sort of confident about this semester.
So... yay?
