Overlong Analysis Cobalt wrote:I disagree. She has shown multiple times to have quite a lot of knowledge that she just doesn't want to share, for various reasons - from the freaky sewing knowledge to knowing damn well that Discord is trying to play her for a fool but carrying on regardless in the (ultimately correct) belief that kindness will win out. She's seen as a fool, and is not one. Why'd she turn into a jerk? Because she knew how helpless she could be in the face of social pressure, and when offered a chance to change that - one that seemed to work - she embraced it wholeheartedly, hoping to change her life for the better. She has an internal sense of morality - probably not a code, but more of an actual sense - that was repressed temporarily. I have known plenty of normal people to get like that without the seductive bullshit of a self-help book. And she does want not to burden others - that's the root of her shyness, not a symptom of it. Her "Oh, um, please, if you don't mind" routine isn't a ploy or an act.swicked wrote:Good and decent? Fine?
Smarter than she lets on? Hardly, she's extremely simple and single-minded. She even lacks much of an internal sense of morality, I thought, given how easily she turned into an unrepentant jerk after iron will. The girl's funny in the head.
Tries hard not to be a burden? Nope, she's just shy. She sees herself as helpless and needing to be saved, per first Discord episode. She relies quite a lot on the kindness of others.
And, just like Rainbow Dash, she never learns. Never really becomes better. Same lesson every freaking time.
As for her not learning, well, that's certainly true, especially in episodes in which she is not the central character; but this is an unfortunate problem with the show itself, and one with people - willing your personality to change does not work very well.
Mr. Frost's arguments are almost entirely subjective, and show more than a little emotional involvement that I am not going to touch with a 39.5 ft. pole. However, I would point out that the kind of person who keeps to themselves and is kind to others is the sort of person we need more of, not moralistic crusaders out to better society with their strength of will and aggressive, zero tolerance, zero empathy, and zero compromise mindsets. And, for the record, the exceptionally shy people that I am friends with are not "cute" in the usual sense of word by any means; frankly, several of them were not blessed by the gene pool with even average looks, by most Western standards. Holding her "cuteness" (which he denies exists, anyway) against her is as absolutely ridiculous as holding a lack thereof against others.
Iron, well, I must point out that a small degree of meekness is somewhat of an ideal trait in a citizen of an ordered society; and aggression will rarely drive a point home outside of combat. The movers and shakers of the world are crafty, not ballsy; and while it can take a great deal of courage to use craft, and sometimes aggression is part of that, a measured and thoughtful response will win over rage in most situations. You want diplomacy if you want to make a difference, one way or the other (look to Rarity). I suppose what's ultimately needed is steadfastness, in peace and in war (look to Applejack). Does Fluttershy have this? Eh. Sometimes, if her friends are on the line, yes. Not so much for herself. But if she was perfect, she wouldn't need friends (...and she'd be a really bad Mary Sue, come to think of it).
Fluttershy is not my favorite pony, but I honestly do not feel the same dislike or rabid hatred that other feel towards her.

I'm not saying introversion is a bad thing. I'm saying the hilarious, ridiculously timid doormat-type introversion that Fluttershy displays is a bad thing. That's not a functioning member of society. That's not even a remotely healthy mental state

Yeah, that has started to wear down on me a little, but it's finally clearing out, and the fic still manages to be funny in spite of it.Mister Frost wrote:I really stopped being entertained by it around the time it stopped being an ostensibly comedic slice of life and started being a hyper-dramatic wangstfest clusterfuck where no one can throw a stick without it landing on (and shattering) someone's hopes and dreams. Plus, it heavily features Fluttershy, who retains her canon characterization as a ludicrously fragile, annoyingly shy, and everyone gives her what she wants and praises her as a fucking angel whenever she starts crying.

I don't think there is a single definition for a healthy mental state. Everyone has problems, it's just the way people are.
Fluttershy is, to me, an exaggerated character. Just like everyone in the series aside from maybe Applejack, who seems to act more realistically than any other main character. Fluttershy exhibits a meek and introverted personality, somewhat like my own, but heavily exaggerated.

Of the Mane 6, Rainbow-Dash, Rarity and Twilight come the closest to real people/ponies while Fluttershy is exaggerate and Pinkie Pie is a literal cartoon.Ketchup wrote:

Meanwhile Applejack is just over here, being awesome She's the one who stands out for being fing normal despite having dead parents and Granny smith raising Big-mac, Applebloom and her. How crazy normal she is speaks well both for herself and Granny Smith.

I think he was talking about a bad type of extroversion rather than condemning it in its entirety. That said, the unhealthily introverted are only hurting themselves (if anyone), and can be drawn out by friends.Mister Frost wrote:Meleagridis wrote:

@Mel
Thanks, dude! And I know a few (college has a scifi/fantasy club, and alongside the modern day vikings [of which there are many] are plenty of people who probably said five words a day in high school and are only now emerging from their shell), and frankly probably am one, or at least was. But I don't really have trouble with socialization or anything, at least not usually. It just takes some effort and I get worse at it when stressed, but I'm pretty sure is normal.
@swicked
Hmm, not really ideal citizen, but that is more or less what I meant by better than most. The reasons why I'd like her are different from the reasons I don't dislike her - I like her because I like people who are similar to her. I don't dislike her because, though her problems can definitely cause her to get in her own way (a lot), she's not hurting anyone and I've got a pretty large amount of tolerance for awkward people if they aren't also being jerky.
I only mentioned the Discord thing because all her friends thought she was actually taken in by Discord, and she was just playing the long game, showing a surprising (for me, at least) level of social awareness while doing so. She is often treated this way, but I really think that she's only socially retarded, not mentally.
@Orange
Yeah... I don't even make the longest posts, but sometimes I do talk for like a while about things.

And now for something silly:
- Quote from Xcqtion:
- "But general, sir, the Youtube looks dangerously populated! We could get into a war, or even worse...an online debate", a soldier quaked.
"What the flying flagellum is an online deb-" the general barked, stifled by a hush from the soldier.
"An
online debate, sir. It's like a debate in real life, but much more
devastating. The monster loves to feast off your intellect, until you
are nothing but a pattering puddle of brainless splotch. The behemoth
recognizes smarts with a gleaming eye and claws that will tear you to
shreds; he shows no mercy."
"Eh, he's nothing", the general
casually shrugged. "I've taken on bigger brutes than all of the
Andromeda population combined. Let the pros handle this."
"But
sir, sir, you don't understand! You can't fight him! The only way to
kill it is to debate with it. And trust me, nothing can beat it's
forensic prowess." The soldier said.
"Son, I was a master
debater in upper upper lower upper high school, and could bring down
even the sanest of politicians down with a single word." The general
gloated.
"But sir!", the soldier peeped, the general walking to
the entrance of the starship gate. The soldier stops to think. "Have
you ever debated against 20,000 amoebae?"
"I hav..." The general was interrupted.
"Then this is what you're up against, sir." the soldier said.
The general, now alert as can be, barked orders to his remaining men - "Guards! At once! Beam up the men!"
But
it was to no avail. Youtube, the living planet, grabbed the landed
soldiers with it's mighty suckers, and started grasping on their brains,
breaching their helmets. The crazy general and soldier could only watch
in horror as the men outside started rambling about something "gay",
and "faggot".
"My God," the general says. "This is horrible.
Never in my entire existence have I saw a much more malevolent monster.
What have I done?!"
The soldier reassures him that it'll be okay, and beckons for liftoff.
"It can only get better," he says, "the less we think about it."

She was stubborn, and she acted loopy due to sleep deprivation. Not quite what I'd call "cartoony"

Cartoonish was her pride. It wasn't feasible for even the two of them to finish the whole thing, but she gets needlessly defensive about going solo. Her pride was taken beyond realistic- it had nothing to do with the sleep deprivation.
Even still, this rates about a 3/10 on the Overboardometer, and this was in season 1 where the Overboardometer actually stopped at 10 and could go below 7. All things considered, she has been the ultimate straight man for all three seasons and has kept more calm and composed than the rest of them combined. That might not be saying much, but the fact that she is the only character who hasn't gone irritatingly overboard in season three sure does. AJ is best.
On a vaguely related note, the element of honesty sure seems like it could also be called the element of integrity. Makes a lot more sense to me, and it fits the excellent qualities of both AJ and Homage (As well as the failings of Monteray Jack, Corrupted Honesty) much better than simple truth telling.
