Forgot about this earlier, but when I read that last bit with Caprice, I instantly thought of a post I saw on a facebook page.stringtheory wrote:posting this here before Swicked does: FoE:PH:MO Mad Mares

Blackjack: ...meh, they just don't make tables like they used to.
Scotch: But, nobody's made tables since...
P-21: Blackjack, did you stick two cybercakes together?
Blackjack: With EPOXY! Doesn't it look just like the snack cake in this advertisement?
Boo: Meep?
P-21: A... woopie pie? Blackjack, this is clearly supposed to be edible.
Blackjack: Ha. Ha. This is crazy edible. It's so edible I can hardly stand to not be eating it! Nom!

Blackjack: This is really chewy.

Blackjack: Mreery, mreery mewey...

Blackjack: Merlp... o_o;;
P-21: ...sigh. Someone get Glory.
P.S.
Glory: And what have we learned?
Blackjack: Sigh... industrial-strength adhesive doesn't turn into delicious cream filling when I swallow it. It just stays as industrial-strength adhesive.
Glory: I swear, sometimes it seems like you can hardly learn anything without coming within inches of death first.

Scotch: Blackjack, what do you think of my dad?
Blackjack: Uh... well, he's very nice... my best friend, really, besides Glory. I'd literally never have escaped my stable, let alone survived my first week, if it wasn't for him. He's really, really awesome.
Scotch: Do you love him?
Blackjack: *blush* Love? I don't know where... where are you going with this?
Scotch: I think you know where I'm going.
Blackjack: I'm with Glory!
Scotch: But she's boring! Don't you want a piece of hot blue flank?
Blackjack: Ch-children shouldn't talk about their fathers that way!
P-21: Scotch! Stop bugging Blackjack and help me with this turret!
Scotch: Fiiiiiiine... huff. You know, I was THIS close to getting you a piece of robomare flank.
P-21: And to think, just a few weeks back, I might have actually been dumb enough to ask about a statement like that.

Blackjack: ...why am I going to be pulling all you guys about on a wagon, again?

Charity: Ah, someone told you we sold "that" here, huh?
Rampage: Yeah and, quite honestly, it feels like ages since I've had somethin' back there.
Charity: Well, you've come to the right place. 500 bits.
Rampage: Oh come now, that's robbery and you know it. Just how many ponies do you expect to waltz in here for some of that?
Charity: You've buying quality and you know it. 400 bits for this little luxury, then.
Rampage: I'm on a budget here, Charity. 350's literally all I got, take it or leave it.
Charity: Deal. Caprice, get your pretty little rear out here, you have a customer!
Caprice: ...eheh, hi Rampage.
Rampage: Why hello, Caprice...
*a little while later*
Rampage: Ah... nothing like the feel of Caprice to make a mare feel her best. I'll definitely be coming back.
Charity: No problem... and, just to be sure, you DO know they are called "capris", right?
Rampage: Oh, really? Well, don't I feel silly. Here, let me just take her off, then...

Making fuel from waste : the French environmental agency estimate that the fuels generated from household wastes (mostly methane and other gases), in the best case scenario, could only amount to 8% of the primary energy needs for the transportation sector on a national level (so I think they were refering to road transportation only).
Commercial flight infrastrure : the European Commission-funded study I linked to earlier agree with you that in the short-term, the best solution is to inject a percentage of biofuels into traditionnal jet fuel, to be able to use the current infrastructure (planes et caetera). However, it also recommend further efforts to study the possibility to change our infrastructure at 20-30 years horizon to further reduce our dependency on fossil fuels in aeronautics, with the long term goal of getting rid of it entirely.
So I think there's hope things will change on this matter at the scale of this generation.
Megaspell shaped charge : well, not knowing the intricate functionning of a balefire bomb I can hardly make up hypotheses as how a shaped charge would look like, let alone how easy it would be to mass-produce. IMHO the Holocaust happened too soon for much work to be done on the subject, let alone deploying it on a doctrinal basis to the armies.

@Fuelfromwaste: household waste would probably be the low end of the scale. I generally hear of agricultural industry waste being used for biofuels, like the stalks and husks of corn for example. When waste for fuel is being discussed that is.

The problem with agricultural wastes is that if you use them as fuel instead of using them as fertilizer, you need to add more and more artificial fertilizer to your soils, which degrade them, slowly killing the land. So using agricultural wastes wouldn't be sustainable in the long term - even if it could be used as a way to preserve energetic independence, and even that is debatable as intensive agriculture demand lots of oil-derived products, for fertilizer and to run the heavy machinery needed.
That's my problem with biofuels : in theory, they're great, but in practice they only shift one natural disaster for another.
Intensive agriculture is the principal reason of biodiversity loss in the world, we don't need more of it.

@Agriculture: taking out the agricultural waste doesn't necessitate adding fertilizers, or destroying the land by sucking out nutrients. I'm not sure why you think that is the case, could you explain it a bit please?

I'll just ask a simple question : when plant grows, where do think they get their nutrients from ?
The answer is : from the soil, the atmosphere providing only nitrogen, oxygen and carbon dioxide.
When you harvest a plant, you also harvest the nutrients it extracted from the soil.
These nutrients don't magically appear from nowhere. In normal conditions (read : not cultivated land), the plant which grow from the soil, by decomposition (animal eating them and shitting on the ground ; bacterial decomposition ; etc) see the nutrients they extracted from the soil return to the soil.
In cultivated lands, as you extract the nutrients from the soil by harvesting the plants, if you want the soil to stay fertile you have to add an equivalent quantity of nutrients. This may be done using natural or artificial fertilizer.
The problem of intensive agriculture is that the artificial fertilizer, combined with the pesticides and the mono-culture aspect (very few species of plants over large areas) slowly kill the microbial life which was able to naturally enrich the soil, forcing to use even more fertilizer, even more pesticides ; and as the soil degrade after a certain point with heavy usage of fertilizer, the top layers of the soil erode themselves, resulting in ultimately dead and infertile soils.
After more than 60 years of industrial agriculture the effects have become notable in a lot of places.

Two forum discussions somewhat related to what I did at school today. Wow.
We watched a CNN thing about video game addiction in social studies. It was fairly interesting.
I've been playing Diablo 2 and Starcraft since I was about 4 or 5.
Another is that we are doing some ecology in my science class, including nitrogen cycles and bioaccumulation of pesticides like DDT.

Lucky for us there's nothing but economies of scale to refill the microbial life with fresh dirt injects or new treatments. People who've never spent time in agriculture have no idea how productive things like artificial fertilizers like farmers be. Compared to a medieval farmer we have something like eighteen times the yield per square acre. Also automation and advanced have pushed hydroponics into the area where large scale farming can be done in places without decent soil with a self contained and self regulating ecosystem. We've had the tech for over a decade now. The issue is again the economies of scale mean even if you can produce year total big tasty tomatoes or beans it won't matter since it's cheaper to grow them half way around the world and ship them back to the state than large scale hydroponics setups.Harmony Ltd. wrote:

@Harmony: the issue then is the monocultures destroying natural reproductive cycles, not the removal of wastes from the system. Switching crops or even giving the field some time just to lie fallow should allow the soil to be replenished from sunlight and the air and such. Plus all that stuff CptAdder said, very good stuff that.
@Videogames: the first game I played was an Asterix & Obelix side scroller on an old computer when I was maybe five. I was too young to know what kind of computer it was, but it was pretty old from my five year old recollections. It was fun, but my first real video game was a yearish later, Praetorians, a RTS game set in the age of Rome.

Well, to be honest it's just some literature I can't get myself to laugh at despite finding them amusing. Usually it's when I get hung up on something in a scene. I'll be sitting here thinking "I know there is a joke here, but where?" then I'll finally find it, but sometimes the effort it took to understand what I was looking at kills the humor.

Obviously nowhere near done. Nine pieces put together so far. Even though it does not look like much, and it really isn't much, it is already causing frame-rate in game. All in all I want four more thrusters and docks for landers that will be attached to the side of the vessel for exploring moons of planets which can also second as escape pods if need be.
