They set it up with sensors and stuff, and they usually have refs nearby tanks to call them out when they get hit by rockets and such.Ironmonger wrote:Paintball anti-tank rifle. HNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNG-actually I'm not sure if that would even be effective.

I play at this janky field in Illinois, and one referee was actually bragging to another referee about how his girlfriend says he cooks the best crystal meth. I can only hope he was joking, but his dreadlocks and yellow ass teeth did not inspire confidence. Another referee asked my friend, we were 15 at the time, what he would do if he woke up from a camping trip with a condom in his butt. The ref asked that in front of my friends dad. It was awkward all around.

Math, my irritating mortal enemy!
I suppose I should have been more clear, I said "anti-tank rifle" rather than "anti-materiel rifle" because AMR's weren't in use during WW2, only sometime afterwards. It's one of those things I do subconsciously, not so surprising where the gibberish in my work comes from now is it? x3

@Iron: sorry that was my mistake I don't know the difference between an anti-tank and anti-material rifle. To the Internet!
And trust me, I was well aware of where the gibberish was coming from, /sarcasm
Hmm for the first time my dislike of emoticons has impaired my communication abilities, you, Iron, just unwittingly created a moral dilemma for me. Debase myself with an emoticon, or sacrifice clarity of written communication? Fortunately this choice proved to be a false dichotomy (my favorite smart person words) and I found an alternate solution, but you almost got me Iron.
Wow I just reread that and realized how tired I must be for this side of me to be showing. Bed time for Erumpet.

Now that you mention a dislike of emoticons I wonder where the hell the cat-face came from. You can't do that shit for real life, and if I ever saw someone do that for real I would claim them a spawn of hell and perform an exorcism.
When it comes to lacking knowledge in guns I usually just wave it off. Compared to the population there aren't that many gun-savvy people. At least that's how it seems.

Could be worse. Could be...
WASHINGTON DC...I don't know, I get these moments where my brain cracks then a while later starts thinking correctly.
I'm seeing a lot of hate on FoE lately. A lot of people are calling it a mediocre fic with the main allure being fact it's a crossover. What the hell, people? It's a monster all of its own!

Heh. A city of machime-men, with machine-hearts and machine-minds ; their spirits enclosed in a concentration camp of the mind, obsessed and solely focused on rhetorical trench warfare, loosing sight of their true duties as the sirens of lobbyism and partisanship tribalism draw them farther and farther down the abysses.
Yes, it could be worse.
Anyway, RE music game :
I, too, cannot really listen to music while reading, as it distract me from the story.
As far as I'm concerned, it's not "music to listen to while reading these scenes", rather than "music that evoke these scenes".

Well, it's been a while since I read the originap FoE now so bear with me (oh hai frost), but even if wouldn't call it terrible or even bad, the fact remain that the original FoE has a number of flaws from a literary perspective.
It -is- an entertaining read and I (obviously) like it ; but liking something shouldn't make it immune from criticism.
Now, if the criticism simply amount to 'lol grimdark mlp fanfic', then sure it isn't constructive.
But point still stand that looking at FoE with a critical eye is a worthwile and necessary endeavour for those willing to follow in Kkat footsteps.

Re: [Official!] Project Horizons Comment Crew Chat thread.
Gah, crap! In my head I'm getting FoE confused with the FoE universe. Various trains of thoughts get onto the same track and collide and I end up saying something stupid. I swear there is more than one person in my brain.
FoE itself is rather mediocre and has many flaws (like the ignorance of how firearms and ballistics work) but the side-fics are actually better if you know what to look for. I suppose FoE is so popular because it was sorta revolutionary, like introducing the car in a world of horse-drawn carriages.
Also have some Twilight.

I'm not sure the ignorance of how ballistics works is a valid criticism of FoE as a book ; but on the other hand different people can have different expectations from books, relating to their personal tastes.
In which way do you feel the problems with ballistics got in the way of the story ?
Regarding the Twilight picture... Holy shit that's cool. Technically, the pic isn't that much, but the images it summons are really, really cool in my opinion.
Twi's tired but full of resolve eyes, the grey streaks in her mane, her general stature, the book with the Alicorn Amulet logo and that freaking awesome logo for the IMP project... Golden.

Twi has that whole sexy scientist thing going on.
As for ballistics and how it messes with the story, the first thing that comes to mind is...Stable 2 I believe, where the group takes it from the Steel Rangers. Little Pip kills a Ranger with a .44 magnum to the head. Anyone with even a bit of ballistics knowledge would know that a .44 magnum would not have the required energy to pierce heavy armor, especially out of your typical revolver. Pip should have died in a few situations because of her reliance on Little Macintosh.

Yes.
The constant contradiction about how tough power armors are supposed to be [1], and how easily everyone kill steel/applejack rangers by the end of the book is particularly grating once you start paying attention to that.
You know how much I rave about stories being self-consistent within their own framework.
[1] : I mean, people in power amors are supposed to be freaking hard to kill. That's the whole point of the thing and the reason why the MWT developed them in the first place.
I can accept that two hundred years after the end of the war the armors aren't in prime condition anymore, that the regenerative spell matrixes might not be up to the task anymore and all the justification you can imagine, but, still... damn.

That's the primary thing that gets on my nerves to be honest, a story that in some cases relies on someone or something being killed and it's not even pulled off correctly. The character reactions and the dialogue are just brilliant, Kkat is a good writer in that regard, but she dropped the ball in some cases. Don't get me wrong, I still think FoE was a good read but it could have been better from my point of view.

We have all kinds of rare, old and just plain wierd guns in the story. If you're not a gun person, you'll usually have one tab open to the story and the other to Google or Wikipedia

Re: [Official!] Project Horizons Comment Crew Chat thread.
It's one of those stories that's actually informative and entertaining. Usually I use hunting data for the kills/attacks in the story. For instance, you aren't going to cleanly take a lion (or in this case, manticore) with anything below a .375 H&H. That's a common hunting round but from what I've seen not many companies manufacture such weapons because they are far too powerful for the most common applications. Military contractor-produced weaponry will be by far the most common since they are feeding a war machine, and military-practical rounds usually aren't sufficient for hunting unless you get into things like the .338 Lapua.
TL;DR The common rounds like the 5.56/.223 and 7.62/.308 aren't the best choices for the bigger beasties. Someone would die, and it likely won't be the beastie.

Twi's pic is still my favorite of the bunch, as both the picture and the logo looks great in my opinion.
Second best is Fluttershy, with her gown, and the logo looking appropriate with the descriptions made of it. Angel being armed to the teeth is maybe a bit much, though, I dunno.
Dash is okay, but not great. Same for Applejack. For both, the character design is okay. For both, the logos are okay if a bit meh.
And as for Pinkie and Rarity... both logos are ugly, and Pinkie's character design seems to miss the point - or at least that's not how I imagined Pinkie as head of the MoM
