Re: [GRIMDARK] Fallout Equestria: Project Horizons Discussion
Okay, just finished. Such a busy week previous. It's funny how discussion up to this point has been about things covered in this chapter such as new roles for P-21, etc. Very cool.
I also love Somber teases like a character we haven't heard from in a while. Halfway through I figured it out and was waiting for the reveal. Eeeeee!

Re mind-controlled hellhounds:
Odd; that always seemed really clear to me. The GPE has a large amount of air power, but they have no dedicated ground forces. Hellhounds provide tough, powerful surface and, importantly, subsurface troops; their utility was demonstrated quite well at the Cathedral. The resource investment in the mind control units is also minimal, important for the resource-strapped pegasi.
- Well no one's questioning how effective they are, certainly more so than the deathclaws were, according to all the videos I've seen of Fallout 3 gameplay. But where is the logical step from "we need ground troops" to "let's mind-control these incredibly dangerous creatures"? I don't see where it would be a "minimal" resource investment either. Considering you would need not only to come up with the idea of mind control in the first place (which there's no reason given why they'd even think of it), but then spend considerable time and effort perfecting it. Something like that isn't easy, it's a very specialized technology that would have taken a large investment.

New Dawn looks awfully like a ponified version of a Necron, right ?
Does that make The Eater of Souls a C'Tan ?
I mean, it's a Star. That eat souls. That... kinda make sense, right ?
That's what I've been thinking for quite awhile, especially after Somber did mention that it ate other stars...

The problem for the Enclave is they can't use ponies, that goes against the propaganda of a wasteland full of murderous savages. So if they recruit ground based ponies they won't be able to keep them in line long as a military force because the more common soldiers know the more the Pegasus themselves know... remember universal enlistment means common soldier ponies are common citizens. And common citizens get to go home at some point.
So Hellhounds make sense since they can't directly threaten Pegasus interests and they are pretty nasty weapons by themselves.

Re: [GRIMDARK] Fallout Equestria: Project Horizons Discussion
Development of any new ground warfare tech would be expensive. Once development of this is complete, however, the investment per soldier is just the small amount for the control receiver. The control transmitters also have to be built, but that's about it. No weapons or armor to manufacture, no specialized logistics train, no spare parts to worry about...WavemasterRyx wrote:

Also, to add onto what Cptadder said, hellhounds have the additional advantage that most Wastelanders only negatively care about their wellbeing and don't interact much with them, allowing the experiments to be more easily kept secret from surface ponies until deployment.

@O. Hinds and Cptadder
But as it stands, there is still no logical reason for them to use hellhounds. Everything that they accomplished could have been accomplished from the sky, except for two very specific points. 1) Trying to counter LittlePip, and 2) Finding Radar in Friendship City.
For the first point, they couldn't have possibly cared that much about LittlePip, and the hellhounds proved ineffective anyways. And in the second case, hellhounds weren't even used, and would have just ended up killing Radar before he could be captured anyways.
Yes, hiring mercenaries from the surface would have been a much more logical, if it weren't for the points you brought up. In which case, merely teaching a team of pegasi to learn how to fight without being airborne would have been more than sufficient and not taken /any/ extra resources.

Wasn't the enclave running out of resources they could only get from the surface though? That alone could warrant a surface army of some sort.

Also, saying that "everything that was accomplished could have been done from the air" ignores that the op's planners did not know exactly what would happen. For all they knew, they would need heavy ground forces.
As for training pegasi for ground combat, hellhounds are both more effective and more expendable. There is also, as I mentioned, the fact that hellhounds are also very good at belowground combat.
Oh, that makes me think of something else: when not engaged in combat, the mind-controlled hellhounds could act as a mining workforce supplying raw ore to be shipped up.Vergil wrote:Wasn't the enclave running out of resources they could only get from the surface though? I was thinking of a tank with a double-barreled cannon in a typical round-ish turret like the Sherman's but bigger with 2 separate side sponsons on each side of the chassis for the machine guns to cover all angles. Hull shaped kind of like a Leopard 2 tank.

I completely agree with Mister Nikel. That chapter was awesome work. :)
And it was bugging me all day trying to think of what CyberDawn's reveal reminded me of. As soon as I remembered, I almost gave a squee of excitement.

So, since I'm stupid: That thing was indeed in the skin of Dawn, right? Not just a "disguise?" I mean, the dialog makes it seem that way but you never know.

Hmmmm, curious how she died then... or if she was found more or less alive and well and murdered just to get to Blackjack. That's awful to think about. :(

I think she died in the tunnels from enervation and the other dangers that lurk down there. Though, it may still be Dawn. Except where BJ wasn't taken over when her cybernetics were implanted. Coginitium just took over and had direct control, that's just what I think though, it would explain why she had all the feelings for Sky Striker and Glory.

The idea of a enemy that just wear ponies' skin like a jacket is a downright 9.5/10 on the "OH ****!"-o-meter and a 9.7/10 on the "I'm so screwed if I had to fight this thing"-o-meterguarddogjr wrote:Caoimhe wrote:So, since I'm stupid: That thing was indeed in the skin of Dawn, right? I so can't wait to hear more about the cyberdemons, cause personally in the fallout equestria universe that is probably the most unique enemy idea to have been thought up by someone.
That's what I think as well.guarddogjr wrote:I think she died in the tunnels from enervation and

I think Cognitum took Dawn's brain after she had died and stuffed it into that body. It may be Dawn's brain in the toaster, but it's no more than a sock puppet for Cognitum with Dawn's flesh on it.

I figure she was still alive until the moment that she turned away from Cogs. But sufficiently important people don't just get a shredder implanted in their insides, so as soon as she met with Sky Striker and started to go sane Cognitum flipped the switch, killed what was left of Dawn (or at least most of her) and shifted her augmentations over to being an independent robot.

- Chapter 52 Comments:
Not a lot to say until I got down to the memory orb. I just grabbed a beer, put on some ambient jazz and Rainy Mood, and sat back to enjoy Blackjack doing some heavy thinking. I do want to call out one passage I really liked:
That's some very mature thought coming from BJ. I enjoy it immensely when she's able to be really honest with herself.I knew I wouldn’t. The questions and mystery would be there like a thorn in my mind. Eventually I’d resent my friends for my own stupid decision.
Eeheehee, I was right in every particular! Well, unless Somber was taking notes on my speculations about twenty chapters ago (Jeeeeeezus!), but you know. Same difference.Homage frowned at him. “You’re thinking of locking the doors so they won’t open for anypony.”
“Right. Blackjack and the hardliners will see her fail to open them,” P-21 replied.
Life Bloom smiled. “And then we can have her open something else later to be absolutely sure. Perhaps Twilight’s study. It’s off the athenaeum; most ponies won’t be there.” He looked at the others. “That way I can inform more moderate members discreetly that she is Twilight’s.”
Welp, so much for that...If the Goddess had known I was related to Twilight, she might have tried to hurt me simply to torment the Twilight Sparkle within her.
GYAAAH!“You’re welcome,” Dawn said happily from beside me with her merry squint.
Yeah, that...“Gyaaaah!” I shouted, lurching back and falling over.
Wait wait wait. Did she just casually imply that she's over 200 years old?“Where- where’d you come from?”
“Flankfurt… though I think today you call it just ‘Flank’,” she replied casually.
Speculation online. But I'll save that for next post.
God I'm getting to hate her. I've got this suspicion that she knows exactly what's going on and thinks it's so cute that BJ and P-21 think they're being clever.“You should talk with her. She’s an interesting mare. Some questions and answers might help you out. Expand your horizons.” Wait... what?
My eyes went from her to him. Did he think Dawn knew something about Horizons? “If you’re sure,” I murmured, glancing past him at the amused pegasus.
Ten'll get you ten and a quarter that she was a foundling.I saw my parents, both earth ponies, killed before my eyes. Such things were common then.
...Or is that "changeling"?
Funny, that's not how Keeper tells it.“And together we decided to save the Wasteland, starting with Hoofington. Those were the best days of my life.”Chapter 30 wrote:Save it? Fuck no. I set out to plunder it!
An irradiated hole near Stockyard, I presume. The dragon crawled off... to where, I never discovered...
For one solitary moment, I felt like maybe Dawn wasn't as awful as I'd been suspecting...“Sometimes, though... sometimes I think I’d give almost anything to go back. To be with them... my family... my friends... Sky Striker. All I’d need is one word, and I’d fly back to that life. The feeling terrifies me at times.”
Nope, gone again.“Then why is it you deny EC-1101 to ponies who would use it to spare countless others pain and suffering?”
Yeah... what she said. Screw the locked door, sometimes I really hate being right...Looking at Dawn, the sensation of hope that Glory would have a happy life with her mother again guttered, and I felt a chill pass though me.
YThat sounds good, and all we have to do is hum...“Because you want to save the Wasteland. And together, we can save it from Project Horizons.”
Yeah, no. You're in league with a soul-stealing abomination, and you're gonna have to go down.
Click click click click, my bullshit detector is going off. Of course, she might believe that. Heck, it may be what Goldie told Luna. But Partypooper was intended to prevent a coup, why would the anti-coup superweapon be set to fire if a coup was permanently prevented? Doesn't add up.“Horizons itself was a superweapon developed two hundred years ago by Goldenblood to prevent a coup by the Ministry Mares.”
Nice to meet you.A goddess of technology and knowledge. Cognitum.
Join me, and I will complete your training. With our combined strength, we can end this destructive conflict and bring order to the galaxy!“You said so yourself. Steel Rain advised me to take it by force, and in the process wronged you. If you like, you can take his place.” She reached out and tapped my chest. “You can make certain that the Harbingers remain an order of good virtue.”
That gave me a giggle. BJ's head sure is crowded for being so empty... :)I ground my teeth, trying to think of some way I could beat the ever loving snot out of him and not have Fluttershy give me dirty looks inside my head.
*facepalm* Of course. She lost her eyes to the Enervation. So Cognitum gave her cyber-eyes, just like Blackjack's...And then, for an instant, she looked at me over her shoulder, her eyes open and blazing with a bright, violent green luminescence...
Please please please tell me P-21 was trying to tell BJ he turned the broadcaster on and Glory's listening in on this...“What else am I supposed to do, Blackjack? I have devoted my entire life to finding some way to save the Wasteland, just as you have! I left my husband and my children in Thunderhead for this world. I must find some way to make it safe! And I’ve found it! I’ve found it!” she proclaimed as she whirled and advanced; her green eyes glared brighter as she thrust an accusing wing at me. “And you… YOU! You refuse to let me. How dare you, Blackjack?! How dare you withhold the key to Equestria’s glorious rebirth?”
Hell, the whole wasteland. Behold the Harbingers, ladies and gentlecolts. They only want to help.
Oh, please tell me that's not thunder... XDOverhead the clouds boomed deeply once more.
Satchel charges! Cheap and effective if you can sneak up on a tank!A second later, from the rear of the tank there blossomed an immense plume of flame that filled the air with a scream of steel.
Fuck yeah! Go Glory go!I saw Dawn launch herself skyward only to be knocked from the air by a cyan bolt streaking by. The PipBuck tumbled from her hooves as Glory arched around and slammed her azure forehooves into Dawn’s face as the mare began to recover.
“Killing foals, Mother? Using a tank against foals and Blackjack?” Glory shrieked. “Are you mad?!”
Immortal Death Filly is no longer cute....then the armored pony started screaming as the ripper sunk through and into her neck, the screeching saw blade painting Rampage’s face red as the Ranger collapsed.
I swear she's got some kind of luck shield. Kissed by Discord? Star Touched?I flailed in an attempt to dodge; the shots buzzed as they nearly struck me, but the weight of my corpse shield overbalanced me and sent me falling to the ground.
Dang it, I keep forgetting Precious exists until she shows up again like this...“Blackjack? Are you okay?” Scotch Tape asked as she raced through the muck with the purple dragonfilly at her side.
Now that's using your noodle! Er... your contrabass. Whatever.I watched in shock as the red and blue colts Adagio and Allegro raced up and dropped Octavia sideways before them and the three colts from the watchtower tossed their light machine gun across the instrument’s body. Anti-machine rounds whined and sparked off the instrument’s indestructible body as the machine gun opened up a chattering line of fire into the Harbingers.
Ah, catchphrases. XD“This reminds me of a very funny story!” Sekashi said with a laugh as she whirled her staff; how in the world did zebras do that? “I will have to tell it to you another time, though.”
Wait, wait, wait... you meant "he's IN the tank", right?“Listen… please… he’s with them…” she said weakly, struggling for breath. “I gave him to Dawn. He’s the tank…”
Right?
Oh shit.
CUUUUUUUUUUUNT!
Or as we like to call it, a boss fight arena.I was in some sort of large courtyard.
Oh shit shit shit, this day keeps getting better. Argh, I can't stand the suspense! Then I looked where the stallion was pointing and saw the eyepatched Sky Striker standing two feet from Dawn.
Mother of God. She went One-Winged Angel on us!Then the gray hide split along those lines and sloughed wetly apart, revealing a blacker hexagon-patterned hide hidden beneath and broken by green tracers of light. From under her gray feathers, dark chisel-like blades emerged, each sporting green circuits of light. Her hooves split as mechanical fingers erupted from the disintegrating flesh of her fetlocks, each digit tipped in a long black talon surrounded by a sickly jade aura.
Speaking of catchphrases!“Okay, you metal bastard. You want to play?” As crazy as it was, I grinned from ear to ear. “Ante up.”
Wait, did... did you just... do the tank fight from Ghost in the Shell?!Backflipping end over end, I ascended the stairs as the machine gun ripped a line of fire right after me. I saw that the marble wall behind me where the stairs split was embossed with the Blueblood family tree, and as I raced to the side the machine gun fire continued up along it. As I ducked behind another pillar at the top of the balcony, I watched it rip through the stone all the way up to the final name. ‘Goldenblood.’
Rain from the hole blasted in the roof pattered down around me... I hooked my fingers into the hole, squatted, and started to pull.
My flesh began to distort where pony ended and metal began.
The stress on my metal limbs caused my already battered back leg to explode apart completely, and my right foreleg ripped off entirely, connection cup and all, leaving a bloody mass of wire, metal, and meat. My left foreleg shattered at the joint midway, flopping uselessly by my side as I finally pushed myself further than even my cyberpony body could go.
You did! You totally did!
I think this qualifies as the best chapter yet.Someponies have noticed I like certain animes and you might be able to pick which one inspired this battle. If you found it ridiculously cheesy and poor writing, it’s my fault.
Seriously, I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. The reveal with Dawn was not unexpected, but then went way beyond anything I had anticipated. And my only complaint about Deus is that the brick-shitting nature of the reveal was damped by your teaser about someone from early in the story showing up again. I was watching for it, so I figured out exactly what Caprice was talking about right away and it wasn't as much of a surprise as I'd have liked when BJ finally got the tank hatch open.
I want to note that I didn't really notice the GitS reference until she started straining against the hatch. Then I had to go watch the scene before the "tree of life" shot confirmed it for me. So yeah, it wasn't too super-obvious. And it's not like you just ripped off the entire fight wholesale, after all. I felt it was more like just a few referential shots because "ha ha, cyborg fighting a tank."
- Editing:
Arched = arced. The PipBuck tumbled from her hooves as Glory arched around and slammed her azure forehooves into Dawn’s face as the mare began to recover.
Alighted = lit up.The mare’s eyes alighted in triumph as her jaw started to tighten on the trigger bit...
Probably ought to change one of those "ate as quickly as I could" lines.I immediately started eating it as quickly as I could. “I hope can do this,” Scotch Tape said as she made repairs.
“You can. It’s in your blood,” I muttered around the cake. She flushed, but smiled as I ate as quickly as I could while Scotch made her field repairs.
Spurious "her" in the middle of the sentence. The baleful green glow of her eyes flared once as her they moved to stare at my hoof.
Row of steel... teeth?Through the smoke emerged two crushing treads and a broad, jagged row of steel.
Repeating the phrase "row of steel teeth" here. I think.I lifted my forehooves completely on reflex and put them right above that row of steel teeth as my hind legs slid backwards beneath me.
