O. Hinds wrote:Thinking more on the Elements of Harmony... What about having the five (magic excluded) forged by the Diamond Dogs at the height of their skill (or thereabouts; if I decide to tie this into that distant-past-FoE/Landstalker fusion I've still been thinking about, I could have the finishing touches be applied by the Diamond Court in exile), magical artifacts tapping into the very collective magic of the planet or whatever in addition to their own formidable power. The intent would be to use them against the Zebras, but the Diamond Dogs never discovered the sixth element, the reason why the five weren't working. At first I thought that there might be a problem with what the elements key to, but... Loyalty's obviously very valuable for an empire, and honesty can be likewise. Kindness could be explained by culture, though it would probably just kindness to others within the empire itself. Generosity can relate to the willing sacrifices. Laughter's a bit harder... possibly it could be interpreted as "keeping up morale and perseverance no matter what one faces"? In any case, the somewhat corrupted forms of the virtues that the Diamond Dogs were trying to use to activate the elements could be another reason why they didn't work. Assuming that I use this, which I'm still not entirely sure about.
I don't buy it. How do they forge the first five elements without any idea how the Elements work? Where does the sixth come from? Why are the most powerful artifacts known to ponydom the result of incompetent tinkering by a race with little to no magical ability? It feels less like reasonable explanation and more like a contrived shoehorning.

Yes, the people who never cast spells created magnificent artifacts that can give a group of spellcasters the power to defeat the gods themselves! They never got around to completing the set because they couldn't figure out how to use the first five things they made themselves at vast expense! The Virtues don't all match up, but some of them would probably be totally useful to a generic empire if they could actually be used, therefore they must have all come from this one!

Sorry, but this sounds kinda like the cultural equivalent of explaining how your OC is totally responsible for every good thing that happened in the backstory.

…And here I'm not really sure what you're saying.

Oh, I mean that FoE has generated enough background, mysteries and lore that it doesn't need to be tied down to what happens in FiM to progress (like adding changelings and Crystal Empire out of nowhere). However since it is so different and unique, adding something like another race of creatures can be acceptable and integrated well. There shouldn't be a concern over 'betraying canon' and whatnot.
Nobody's required to add in every detail of season three any more than Somber was required to retcon in changelings after the wedding. To start with, anything added in S3 has a small enough affect on the world that it hasn't been visible for two years of show, and even if it's still around after an apocalypse and two hundred years it would likely have changed to be unrecognizable, or been so far away that the reduced communicative range of the Wastelanders would just never be aware of it. There's no reason for a specific Fo:E story to need to include a specific part of FiM canon.

Meanwhile, a lot of people like to keep all their headcanons in the same place. If, say, I was doing an analysis of the relationship between Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy in the history of PH, I I'd want to be able to use all the examples I have of interactions between the two, rather than taking many hours checking every snippet I remember to see if it's from after some arbitrary "divergence point" where the story and the show start to contradict each other (and giving up after the second instance, leading to the analysis and discussion never happening). As long as nothing contradicts between the stories, the fanfic continues to be a possible future, a continuation of the story, rather than something unrelated that happens to share some elements. And while that isn't required by any stretch, a lot of people prefer it including many of the authors.

Basically, there is not and never should be a requirement to adjust everything for S3 revelations. But until and unless the FiM writers introduce something that means Fo:E and PH as they are could not happen, there's no reason to declare things AU and several reasons not to. And nothing like that was brought up in S2, so I don't think we're likely to have a problem.

I heard from Somber that it was hopefully today. Well, tomorrow as of 22 hours ago.

ugh, a image banner in a sig, Applejacks (warning, incoming rant, it's not particularly directed at you, just at those who have giant image banners in their sigs), in my opinion having a image banner is like having a fanfare of trumpets sound every time you post, sure it's interesting/awesome the first few times, but it becomes an annoying space waster very quickly How, yes 'we' know you posted, why do we need this big gaudy image distracting us from the actual post? another peeve of mine is when someone's sig is so long it's longer then their actual post...

in other news I found this:

On the Elements, I came to a variant on Swicked's idea. Reset buttons given to the planet's sentient population in case they didn't want their world to change in a certain way. The only sentients allowed to vote on it, though, were ones that held virtues the creators valued. My idea differs from Swicked's in that they were originally more democratic, channeling the will of all sentients on the planet that held the virtues, and were constantly running, keeping the world in a consensus-defined utopia at all times. Then the Eater of Souls' impact damaged them, and afterwards they were off unless intentionally activated and each element could only have one bearer.

The Crystal Empire might fit into FOE as a weak, officially neutral country that manufactured war material for Equestria and had trade with the zebras banned due to an understanding between Equestrian and Crystalline royalty and an awareness that Equestria could squash the Crystal Empire like a bug. But yeah, there's no need to incorporate every new bit of FIM information into the FOE-verse.

Oh, of course.

Ironmonger wrote:I've decided to limit my contributions to the FoE community to weapons, technology, and possibly culture. No art or advanced headcanon like Hinds or Wavemaster since there be no point in stepping out of my area and looking like a moron. Also, anyone have some ideas on what the land of equestria looks line in FoE? Peninsula, island?

I know that O. Hinds used to have a link to his headcanon map in his signature, but I'm not sure where that went.

Eh well stuff happens.
What do you mean? It's still... Huh. My signature appears to have vanished. Thank you for bringing this to my attention.
edit: Okay, some of my posts appear to lack signatures. I hypothesize that this may be due to some of them using the box at the bottom of the page rather than the post button.

I'm taking a food break from brushing now. Unfortunately, though, Bronode might be coming down with something, which might possibly result in the chapter being delayed to next weekend.

Is LMR down or something? I can't find it anymore.
from what I can tell from some of the people I follow (and this picture)...
Tumblr went and deleted a lot of porn related blogs, apparently.
That picture from Stories from the Front is completely unrelated. The mod of that blog has just been making fun of tumblr's scheduled maintenance downtime, and ended up drawing that as a joke.

What happened with LMR and several other blogs is that they were reported for TOS violation and deleted (it's nothing new, it's been happening to several big names for quite some time now). In LMR's case, it was for drawing a sexual image of anthro Sweetie Belle and Applebloom, and it happened over a week ago.

or it could be like Canada was in Fallout, quickly annexed by the U.S./Equestria at the beginning of the war, or in FO:E maybe when Luna takes over and the ministries get started
